“Statistical analysis of porcelain tiles' technical properties : full factorial design investigation on oxide ratios and temperature”. Zamani M, Yapicioglu H, Kara A, Sevik C, Physica scripta 98, 125953 (2023). http://doi.org/10.1088/1402-4896/AD0AE9
Abstract: This study focuses on optimizing the composition and firing temperature of porcelain tiles using statistical analysis techniques. A full factorial design, including model adequacy checking, analysis of variance, Pareto charts, interaction plots, regression model, and response optimizer is employed. The key factors were the Seger ratios of SiO2/Al2O3, Na2O/K2O, MgO/CaO, and firing temperature. The response variables investigated were bulk density, water absorption, linear shrinkage, coefficient of thermal expansion (at 500 degrees C), and strength. The statistical analysis revealed highly significant results, which were further validated, confirming their reliability for practical use in the production of porcelain tiles. The study demonstrated the effectiveness of utilizing Seger formulas and properties of typical raw materials to accurately predict the final properties of ceramic tiles. By employing SiO2/Al2O3 = 5.2, Na2O/K2O = 1.50, MgO/CaO = 3.0, and firing temperature of 1180 degrees C, optimized properties, such as maximum strength, maximum bulk density, and minimum water absorption, was achieved with a composite desirability of 0.9821.

“Possible (bi) polaron effects in the high-tc superconductors”. Peeters FM, Devreese JT, Verbist G, Physica scripta
T2 –, 11TH General Conf. Of the Condensed Matter Division of the European Physical Society, April 08-11, 1991, Exeter, England T39, 66 (1991). http://doi.org/10.1088/0031-8949/1991/T39/007
Abstract: In the present paper, the theory of the large bipolaron is reviewed and the possibility of bipolaron formation in the high-T(c) superconductors is indicated. Operator and path-integral formulations of the large bipolaron problem are compared. In the strong-coupling limit, the effect of non-optimal upper-bounds to the single-polaron groundstate energy is emphasized. The fact that the interaction with multiple phonon branches enhances the electron-phonon interaction and might result in a larger stability region for bipolaron formation is indicated. Experimental values for the static and high-frequency dielectric constants are used to discuss the relevance of bipolaron formation as a pair-forming mechanism in the high-T(c) superconductors.

“Graphene-like BC₆N single-layer: tunable electronic and magnetic properties via thickness, gating, topological defects, and adatom/molecule”. Bafekry A, Physica E-Low-Dimensional Systems &, Nanostructures 118, 113850 (2020). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.PHYSE.2019.113850
Abstract: By using density functional theory-based first-principles calculations, we investigate the structural, electronic, optical, and transport properties of pristine single-layer BC6N. Under different external actions and functionalization. Increasing the thickness of the structure results in a decrease of the band gap. Applying a perpendicular electric field decreases the band gap and a semiconductor-to-topological insulator transition is revealed. Uniaxial and biaxial strains of +8% result in a semiconductor-to-metal transition. Nanoribbons of BC6N having zigzag edge with even (odd) values of widths, become metal (semiconductor), while the armchair edge nanoribbons exhibit robust semiconducting behavior. In addition, we systematically investigate the effect of surface adatom and molecule, substitutional impurity and defect engineering on the electronic properties of single-layer BC6N and found transitions from metal to half-metal, to ferromagnetic metal, to dilute magnetic semiconductor, and even to spin-glass semiconductor. Furthermore we found that, topological defects including vacancies and Stone–Wales type, induce magnetism in single-layer BC6N.

“Theoretical prediction of the PtOX (X = S and Se) monolayers as promising optoelectronic and thermoelectric 2D materials”. Nguyen DK, Hoat DM, Bafekry A, Van On V, Rivas-Silva JF, Naseri M, Cocoletzi GH, Physica E-Low-Dimensional Systems &, Nanostructures 131, 114732 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.PHYSE.2021.114732
Abstract: In this paper, two new monolayers, namely PtOS and PtOSe, are theoretically predicted using first-principles calculations. Structural, electronic, optical and thermoelectric properties are explored using full-potential linearized augmented plane-wave (FP-LAPW) method and the semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. Predicted two-dimensional (2D) materials show good dynamical, thermodynamic and structural stability. Calculated electronic structures indicate the indirect gap semiconductor nature of the PtOS and PtOSe single layers with energy gap of 1.346(2.436) and 0.978(1.978) eV as calculated with the WC(HSE06) functional, respectively. Density of states spectra and valence charge distribution maps suggest a mix of covalent and ionic characters of the chemical bonds. 2D materials at hand exhibit good absorption property in the visible regime with coefficient value reaching the order of 105/cm, even much larger in the ultraviolet, suggesting the promising optoelectronic applicability. Finally, the thermoelectric parameters including electrical conductivity, thermal conductivity, Seebeck coefficient, power factor and figure of merit are determined and analyzed. Results indicate prospective thermoelectric performance of both considered single layers as demonstrated by large figure of merit close to unity. Our work introduces two new 2D multifunctional materials that may possess potential applications in the optoelectronic and thermoelectric nano-devices.

“Performance optimization of the nano-sized pick-up loop of a dc-SQUID”. Hasnat A, Physica C-Superconductivity And Its Applications 583, 1353852 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.PHYSC.2021.1353852
Abstract: A flux transformer, consisting of a superconducting primary loop (pick-up loop) in series with a superconducting secondary loop on which measurement is done, is considered to optimize the approach and sensitivity of the Superconducting QUantum Interference Device (SQUID). Performance of such a pick-up loop placed above a magnetic particle is investigated using the numerical Ginzburg-Landau (GL) simulations. By solving 3D GL equations, static properties of the device such as the distribution of Cooper-pair density and the screening current in the secondary coil have been investigated as a function of the dimensions of the primary loop. Dynamic properties, such as current-voltage characteristics and flux-dependent critical current of the device have also been addressed, all leading to conclusion that smaller size pick-up loop is the first requirement for its optimal sensitivity.

“Biotemplated diatom silica-titania materials for air purification”. Van Eynde E, Tytgat T, Smits M, Verbruggen SW, Hauchecorne B, Lenaerts S, Photochemical &, photobiological sciences 12, 690 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1039/C2PP25229E
Abstract: We present a novel manufacture route for silicatitania photocatalysts using the diatom microalga Pinnularia sp. Diatoms self-assemble into porous silica cell walls, called frustules, with periodic micro-, meso- and macroscale features. This unique hierarchical porous structure of the diatom frustule is used as a biotemplate to incorporate titania by a solgel methodology. Important material characteristics of the modified diatom frustules under study are morphology, crystallinity, surface area, pore size and optical properties. The produced biosilicatitania material is evaluated towards photocatalytic activity for NOx abatement under UV radiation. This research is the first step to obtain sustainable, well-immobilised silicatitania photocatalysts using diatoms.

“Single-layer and bilayer graphene superlattices: collimation, additional Dirac points and Dirac lines”. Barbier M, Vasilopoulos P, Peeters FM, Philosophical transactions of the Royal Society : mathematical, physical and engineering sciences 368, 5499 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1098/rsta.2010.0218
Abstract: We review the energy spectrum and transport properties of several types of one-dimensional superlattices (SLs) on single-layer and bilayer graphene. In single-layer graphene, for certain SL parameters an electron beam incident on an SL is highly collimated. On the other hand, there are extra Dirac points generated for other SL parameters. Using rectangular barriers allows us to find analytical expressions for the location of new Dirac points in the spectrum and for the renormalization of the electron velocities. The influence of these extra Dirac points on the conductivity is investigated. In the limit of δ-function barriers, the transmission T through and conductance G of a finite number of barriers as well as the energy spectra of SLs are periodic functions of the dimensionless strength P of the barriers, Graphic, with vF the Fermi velocity. For a KronigPenney SL with alternating sign of the height of the barriers, the Dirac point becomes a Dirac line for P = π/2+nπ with n an integer. In bilayer graphene, with an appropriate bias applied to the barriers and wells, we show that several new types of SLs are produced and two of them are similar to type I and type II semiconductor SLs. Similar to single-layer graphene SLs, extra Dirac points are found in bilayer graphene SLs. Non-ballistic transport is also considered.

Abstract: The structure of the metastable Ni2Al phase, which has long been a matter of controversy, has been carefully re-examined by means of high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HREM) and electron microdiffraction. First, it is concluded that theas-quenched NixAl100-x(60 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 65) material already exhibits a partial omega-type collapse in a one-dimensional fashion which and is consistent with the anomalous dip in the phonon dispersion curve. Ni2Al precipitates are formed on annealing by thermal decomposition of the high-temperature NixAl100-xB2 phase and still retain the small omega-type shuffle. The amount of displacement in the well developed Ni2Al phase was estimated to be between 20 and 50% of the ideal omega collapse; this was determined by means of a combined technique of HREM and microdiffraction together with dynamical calculations of HREM images and diffraction intensities.

Abstract: 'Natural' platelets are planar defects in {001} planes found in natural type-IaA/B diamonds. 'Man-made' platelets are platelets formed in the laboratory by annealing type-IaA diamonds at temperatures over 2500 degrees C. Careful study shows that the infrared (IR) spectra of the 'man-made' platelets are different from the IR spectra of 'natural' platelets. High-temperature (T greater than or equal to 2000 degrees C) annealing of platelets containing type-IaA/B diamonds modifies the IR absorption spectrum owing to the 'natural' platelets and makes it similar to the IR spectrum of the 'man-made' platelets. It is suggested that such high-temperature annealing changes the structure of the 'natural' platelets. The changes are too subtle to be detected by electron microscopy techniques. Topographic electron-energy-loss spectroscopy shows that platelets contain nitrogen at an average density of 0.7 atoms per a(0)(2); however, high-temperature annealing does not seem to affect the concentration of the nitrogen in the platelets.

Abstract: Multishell carbon nanotubules are studied by means of diffraction contrast dark field images. This results in an electron microscopy method for the determination of the sign of the chiral angles in carbon nanotubes. The method is justified by a reasoning either in direct space or in diffraction space. We also investigate a carbon nanotubule exhibiting a bend and we confront the observations with the heptagon-pentagon pair model.

Abstract: Homogenized Ni39.6Mn47.5T12.9 material was investigated by different electron microscopy techniques. Apart from the martensite precursor distortions typical for B2 phase alloys undergoing a thermoelastic martensitic transformation upon cooling, coherent dodecahedron-shaped precipitates with sizes between 20 and 100 nm and faceted by lozenge shapes of {110}-type planes are observed. Selected-area and microdiffraction patterns reveal an overall unit cell with a size of 3 x 3 x 3 units of the bcc lattice of the matrix and a body-centred symmetry without screw axes. Finally a ternary gamma-brass-type atomic structure of space group 14(3) over bar m is suggested for these precipitates in accordance with the obtained symmetry constraints, the energy-dispersive X-ray measurements and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images. This is the first time this type of structure is found in an alloy completely consisting of transition-metal elements.
