“Electron microscopy and X-ray structural investigations of incommensurate spin-ladder Sr4.1Ca4.7Bi0.3Cu17O29 single crystals”. Dluzewski P, Pietraszko A, Kozlowski M, Szczepanska A, Gorecka J, Baran M, Leonyuk L, Babonas GJ, Lebedev OI, Szymczak R, Acta physica Polonica: A: general physics, solid state physics, applied physics 98, 729 (2000)
Abstract: Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction proved chain/ladder incommensurate single crystal structure of investigated samples. The incommensurate ratio was determined from the X-ray and electron diffraction being equal to 0.704. Diffuse scattering intensities localised on the planes perpendicular to the c*-axis and passing through the spots originating from the periodicity of chain sublattice were detected. High-angle grain boundary or twinning formed by rotation of 33.3 degrees around [100] direction was observed. High-resolution electron microscopy images revealed the stacking faults in ac planes.

“Experimental distinction between giant vortex and multivortex states in mesoscopic superconductors”. Kanda A, Baelus BJ, Peeters FM, Kadowaki K, Ootuka Y, AIP conference proceedings
T2 –, 24th International Conference on Low Temperature Physics (LT24), AUG 10-17, 2005, Orlando, FL , 739 (2006)
Abstract: We describe an experimental distinction between giant vortex and multivortex states in mesoscopic superconducting disks by using two methods: the multiple-small-tunnel-junction method and the temperature dependence of vortex expulsion fields. The experimental results are in good agreement with the theoretical simulations based on the non-linear Ginzburg-Landau theory.

Abstract: Solving the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau equations self-consistently, we investigate the influence of a triangular surface defect (i.e. pacman shaped sample) on the vortex transitions in mesoscopic superconducting disks. Depending on the size of the defect, vortices may enter/leave one by one or in pairs.

“A new way of synthesis and characterization of superconducting oxyfluoride Sr2Cu(O,F)4+\delta”. Ardashnikova EI, Lubarsky SV, Denisenko DI, Shpanchenko RV, Antipov EV, Van Tendeloo G, Physica: C : superconductivity 253, 259 (1995)
Abstract: Superconducting Cu mixed oxyfluoride, Sr,Cu(O, F)(4+delta), was Obtained via fluorination of Sr2CuO3 by XeF2 in the 100-250 degrees C temperature range in a closed Ni container. The prepared samples exhibited a lower T-c in comparison with earlier reported values. Different samples in the Sr-Cu-O-F system were prepared by a solid-state reaction at 220-400 degrees C, but no formation of the oxyfluoride was detected even with an addition of xenon difluoride. These data allow one to draw conclusions on the metastability of the oxyfluoride under the conditions used, Electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction studies revealed large amounts of badly crystallized SrF2; this could be a reason for the small superconducting volume fraction as well as for the inhomogeneous distribution of the anions.

“Transmission electron microscopy characterisation of Ti and Al/Ti contacts on GaN and AlGaN/GaN”. van Daele B, Van Tendeloo G, Ruythooren W, Derluyn J, Leys MR, Germain M, Springer proceedings in physics 107, 389 (2005)
Abstract: Transmission electron microscopy has been applied to study Ti and Al/Ti contacts on GaN and AlGaN/GaN as a function of annealing temperature. This has lead to a profound understanding of the role of Al, both in the contact formation on n-GaN and on AlGaN/GaN. Al in the AlGaN decreases the N-extraction by Ti out of the nitride, because of the strong Al-N bond. Al in the metal bilayer also reduces the N-extraction by Ti due to a preferential alloy mixing.

“Analysis and comparison of the co2 and co dielectric barrier discharge solid products”. Belov I, Paulussen S, Bogaerts A, Hakone Xv: International Symposium On High Pressure Low Temperature Plasma Chemistry: With Joint Cost Td1208 Workshop: Non-equilibrium Plasmas With Liquids For Water And Surface Treatment (2016)
Abstract: The CO and CO2 Dielectric Barrier Discharges (DBD) and their solid products were analyzed keeping similar energy input regimes. Gas chromatography analysis revealed the presence of CO2, CO and O-2 mixture in the exhaust of the CO2 DBD, while no O-2 was found when CO was used as a feed gas. It was shown that the C-2 Swan lines observed with optical emission spectroscopy were distinct in the CO plasma while they were not observed in the CO2 emission spectrum. Also the solid products of the plasmas exhibited remarkable differences. Nanoparticles with a diameter between10 and 300 nm, composed of Fe, O and C (Fe: O: C similar to 13: 50: 30) were produced by the CO2 DBD, while microscopic dendrite-like carbon structure (C: O similar to 73: 27) were formed in the CO plasma. The growth rate in the CO2 and CO DBDs was evaluated to be on the level of 0.15 mg/min and 15 mg/min, respectively. The difference of the CO and CO2 discharges and their products might be attributed to the oxygen content in the latter (6.4 mol.% O-2 in the exhaust) and subsequent etching of the carbonaceous film.

“Editorial: Special issue on CO2 utilization with plasma technology”. Li S, Liu C, Bogaerts A, Gallucci F, Journal Of Co2 Utilization 61, 102017 (2022). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jcou.2022.102017
Abstract: Plasma technology has advanced significantly in recent years, with application ranging from chemical conversion, to surface treatment, material development and several other fields. Special attention has been paid to the development of possible novel approaches for the conversion of chemicals in a more sustainable way. Plasma technology offers advantages over thermochemical routes such as high process versatility, mild reaction condition, one-step synthesis, fast reaction and instant control. More importantly, it can be easily combined with electricity generated from various renewable sources and is suitable for energy storage via the conversion of intermittent renewable energy into carbon-neutral fuels or other chemicals. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in the development of plasma technology for CO2 utilization. Investigation on different reactions such as CO2 splitting, dry reforming of methane (DRM) and CO2 hydrogenation with different types of plasma reactors and catalysts have been reported by researchers worldwide. Although technological maturity still needs to be increased, the potential of plasma has been well-recognized by the scientific community and industry. More research output in the future is expected as a result of intensive research activities and various kinds of investment. In this context, we present this special issue on CO2 utilization with plasma technology, which collects 22 articles, covering topics in related areas such as plasma reactor design, plasma catalysis, plasmamaterial interaction, modeling and new ideas for possible applications.

“Tetramethylbenzidine-TetrafluoroTCNQ (TMB-TCNQF(4)) : a narrow-gap semiconducting salt with room-temperature relaxor ferroelectric behavior”. Canossa S, Ferrari E, Sippel P, Fischer JKH, Pfattner R, Frison R, Masino M, Mas-Torrent M, Lunkenheimer P, Rovira C, Girlando A, Journal Of Physical Chemistry C 125, 25816 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1021/ACS.JPCC.1C07131
Abstract: We present an extension and revision of the spectroscopic and structural data of the mixed-stack charge-transfer (CT) crystal 3,3 ',5,5 '-tetramethylbenzidine-tetrafluorotetracyano-quinodimethane (TMB-TCNQF4), associated with new electric and dielectric measurements. Refinement of synchrotron structural data at low temperature has led to revise the previously reported C2/m structure. The revised structure is P2(1)/m, with two dimerized stacks per unit cell, and is consistent with the low temperature vibrational data. However, polarized Raman data in the low-frequency region also indicate that by increasing temperature above 200 K, the structure presents an increasing degree of disorder, mainly along the stack axis. X-ray diffraction data at room temperature have confirmed that the correct structure is P2(1)/ m -no phase transitions -but did not allow substantiating the presence of disorder. On the other hand, dielectric measurements have evidenced a typical relaxor ferroelectric behavior already at room temperature, with a peak in the real part of dielectric constant epsilon'(T,v) around 200 K and 0.1 Hz. The relaxor behavior is explained in terms of the presence of spin solitons separating domains of opposite polarity that yield to ferroelectric nanodomains. TMB-TCNQF(4) is confirmed to be a narrow-gap band semiconductor (Ea similar to 0.3 eV) with a room-temperature conductivity of similar to 10(-4) Omega(-1) cm(-1).

“Topotactic redox cycling in SrFeO2.5+&delta, explored by 3D electron diffraction in different gas atmospheres”. Batuk M, Vandemeulebroucke D, Ceretti M, Paulus W, Hadermann J, Journal of materials chemistry A : materials for energy and sustainability (2022). http://doi.org/10.1039/D2TA03247C
Abstract: For oxygen conducting materials applied in solid oxide fuel cells and chemical-looping processes, the understanding of the oxygen diffusion mechanism and the materials’ crystal structure at different stages of the redox reactions is a key parameter to control their performance. In this paper we report the first ever in situ 3D ED experiment in a gas environment and with it uncover the structure evolution of SrFeO2.5 as notably different from that reported from in situ X-ray and in situ neutron powder diffraction studies in gas environments. Using in situ 3D ED on submicron sized single crystals obtained from a high quality monodomain SrFeO2.5 single crystal , we observe the transformation under O2 flow of SrFeO2.5 with an intra- and interlayer ordering of the left and right twisted (FeO4) tetrahedral chains (space group Pcmb) into consecutively SrFeO2.75 with space group Cmmm (at 350°C, 33% O2) and SrFeO3-δ with space group Pm3 ̅m (at 400°C, 100% O2). Upon reduction in H2 flow, the crystals return to the brownmillerite structure with intralayer order, but without regaining the interlayer order of the pristine crystals. Therefore, redox cycling of SrFeO2.5 crystals in O2 and H2 introduces stacking faults into the structure, resulting in an I2/m(0βγ)0s symmetry with variable β.

“RSV frequency in children below 2 years hospitalized for lower respiratory tract infections”. Hacimustafaoglu M, Celebi S, Bozdemir SE, Ozgur T, Ozcan I, Guray A, Çakir D, Turkish Journal Of Pediatrics 55, 130 (2013)
Abstract: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most frequent agent of acute lower respiratory diseases and creates a significant burden of disease in children under 5 years all over the world. RSV causes severe lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) that require hospitalization, especially in children <= 2 years. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of RSV in children <= 2 years of age hospitalized for LRTI. Children <= 2 years of age hospitalized for one year for LRTI in the three largest hospitals of Bursa City Center, Turkey were evaluated. These three hospitals comprise 67.5% of all child beds in central Bursa, so this study allows us to evaluate the total disease burden and hospitalization incidence in central Bursa. Nasal swabs of the children were evaluated with RSV RespiStrip (Coris Bioconcept Organization). A total of 671 children were hospitalized for LRTI, and 254 (37.9%) had at least one hospitalization that was positive for RSV. Of all patients with LRTI, 54.8% (368/671) were hospitalized for acute bronchiolitis, while 45.2% (303/671) were hospitalized for pneumonia. Of patients with acute bronchiolitis or pneumonia, 41% (151/368) and 34% (103/303) were RSV+, respectively. Of RSV+ hospitalized children, 59.5% (151/254) were diagnosed as acute bronchiolitis and 40.5% (103/254) as pneumonia. The annual incidences of hospitalization due to LRTI, acute bronchiolitis and pneumonia were 20.5/1000, 11.2/1000 and 9.3/1000, respectively, in children <= 2 years of age. The annual incidences of hospitalization due to RSV+ LRTI, acute bronchiolitis and pneumonia were found as 7.8/1000, 4.6/1000 and 3.2/1000, respectively, in children <= 2 years of age. More than one-third of all children hospitalized with LRTI (38.3%, n=257) were in the 0-3 months age group. Compared to other age groups, RSV positivity was highest in that age group for acute bronchiolitis (57%), pneumonia (39.5%) and also total children with LRTI (47.9%). RSV is a very important cause of lower respiratory infections in children <= 2 years of age and occurred most frequently in those 0-3 months of age in our study. Since there is no other study assessing the annual hospitalization incidence of RSV+ LRTIs in one city in Turkey, our study has unique importance for providing valuable statistical data about RSV+ LRTIs.

“Electrochemical sensing of phenicol antibiotics at gold”. Pilehvar S, Dardenne F, Blust R, De Wael K, International journal of electrochemical science 7, 5000 (2012)
Abstract: Phenicols are an effective and a broad spectrum class of antibiotics which has lost favour due to their side effects on human health. A rapid and sensitive electrochemical detection system is developed for the simultaneous detection of chloramphenicol (CAP), thiamphenicol (TAP) and florfenicol (FF). The electrochemical behaviour of CAP in the presence of its derivatives was investigated by cyclic voltammetry (CV) and square wave voltammetry (SWV). At a gold electrode, CAP gives rise to a sensitive cathodic peak at −0.68V (versus SCE) in a tris buffer solution (pH 7.6). This behavior gives us the opportunity to introduce a method for sensing CAP electrochemically in the presence of its derivatives. Calibration graphs were linear in the 2.5-7.4 μmol L-1 concentration range. Deviations from linearity were observed for higher concentrations and this was interpreted to be due to kinetic limitation caused by the saturation of CAP and its reduction products onto the gold electrode surface. A limit of detection of 1 μmol L-1 was found.

Idrissi H, Samaee V, Lumbeeck G, van der Werf T, Pardoen T, Schryvers D, Cordier P (2019) Supporting data for “In situ Quantitative Tensile Tests on Antigorite in a Transmission Electron Microscope”
Abstract: The determination of the mechanical properties of serpentinites is essential towards the understanding of the mechanics of faulting and subduction. Here, we present the first in situ tensile tests on antigorite in a transmission electron microscope. A push-to-pull deformation device is used to perform quantitative tensile tests, during which force and displacement are measured, while the microstructure is imaged with the microscope. The experiments have been performed at room temperature on beams prepared by focused ion beam. The specimens are not single crystals despite their small sizes. Orientation mapping indicated that some grains were well-oriented for plastic slip. However, no dislocation activity has been observed even though engineering tensile stress went up to 700 MPa. We show also that antigorite does not exhibit an pure elastic-brittle behaviour since, despite the presence of defects, the specimens underwent plastic deformation and did not fail within the elastic regime. Instead, we observe that strain localizes at grain boundaries. All observations concur to show that under our experimental conditions, grain boundary sliding is the dominant deformation mechanism. This study sheds a new light on the mechanical properties of antigorite and calls for further studies on the structure and properties of grain boundaries in antigorite and more generally in phyllosilicates.
