Abstract: This study investigates the impact of lower temperature on short term and long term (down to 10 degrees C) on a completely anoxic anammox granular sludge process. This is the first time granular sludge Anammox is operated in pure anoxic condition in SBR and at low temperature. Conversion performance, kinetic parameters, sludge characteristics and microbial community were analyzed.

Abstract: The interaction of monolayer graphene with specific substrates may break its sublattice symmetry and results in unidirectional chiral states with opposite group velocities in the different Dirac cones (Zarenia et al 2012 Phys. Rev. B 86 085451). Taking advantage of this feature, we propose a valley filter based on a transversal mass kink for low energy electrons in graphene, which is obtained by assuming a defect region in the substrate that provides a change in the sign of the substrate-induced mass and thus creates a non-biased channel, perpendicular to the kink, for electron motion. By solving the time-dependent Schrodinger equation for the tight-binding Hamiltonian, we investigate the time evolution of a Gaussian wave packet propagating through such a system and obtain the transport properties of this graphene-based substrate-induced quantum point contact. Our results demonstrate that efficient valley filtering can be obtained, provided: (i) the electron energy is sufficiently low, i.e. with electrons belonging mostly to the lowest sub-band of the channel, and (ii) the channel length (width) is sufficiently long (narrow). Moreover, even though the transmission probabilities for each valley are significantly affected by impurities and defects in the channel region, the valley polarization in this system is shown to be robust against their presence.

Abstract: Vincent van Gogh's still lifes Irises and Roses were investigated to shed light onto the degree to which the paintings had changed, both individually and in relation to each other since they were painted, particularly in regard to the fading of the red lakes. Non-invasive techniques, including macroscopic X-ray fluorescence mapping, reflectance imaging spectroscopy, and X-radiography, were combined with microanalytical techniques in a select number of samples. The in-depth microchemical analysis was necessary to overcome the complications that arise when evaluating by non-invasive methods alone the compositions of passages with complex layering and mixing of paints. The results obtained by these two approaches were complemented by color measurements performed on paint cross-sections and on protected edges, and with historical information provided by the artist's own descriptions, early reviews and reproductions, and the data was used to carry out digital color simulations that provided, to a certain extent, a visualization of how the paintings may have originally appeared.

Abstract: We generalize the Gielis Superformula by extending the R. Chacon approach, but avoiding the use of Jacobi elliptic functions. The obtained results are extended to the three-dimensional case. Several new shapes are derived by using the computer algebra system Mathematica(C).

Abstract: The definition of Gielis curves allows for the representation of self intersecting curves. The analysis and the understanding of these representations is of major interest for the analytical representation of sectors bounded by multiple subsets of curves (or surfaces), as this occurs for instance in many natural objects. We present a construction scheme based on R-functions to build signed potential fields with guaranteed differential properties, such that their zero-set corresponds to the outer, the inner envelop, or combined subparts of the curve. Our framework is designed to allow for the definition of composed domains built upon Boolean operations between several distinct objects or some subpart of self-intersecting curves, but also provides a representation for soft blending techniques in which the traditional Boolean union and intersection become special cases of linear combinations between the objects' potential fields. Finally, by establishing a connection between R-functions and Lame curves, we can extend the domain of the p parameter within the R-p-function from the set of the even positive numbers to the real numbers strictly greater than 1, i.e. p is an element of]1, +infinity[.

Abstract: A previously unreported Pb-based perovskite PbMoO3 is obtained by high-pressure and high-temperature synthesis. This material crystallizes in the Pm3m cubic structure at room temperature, making it distinct from typical Pb-based perovskite oxides with a structural distortion. PbMoO3 exhibits a metallic behavior down to 0.1 K with an unusual T-sublinear dependence of the electrical resistivity. Moreover, a large specific heat is observed at low temperatures accompanied by a peak in C-P/T-3 around 10 K, in marked contrast to the isostructural metallic system SrMoO3. These transport and thermal properties for PbMoO3, taking into account anomalously large Pb atomic displacements detected through diffraction experiments, are attributed to a low-energy vibrational mode, associated with incoherent off-centering of lone-pair Pb2+ cations. We discuss the unusual behavior of the electrical resistivity in terms of a polaronlike conduction, mediated by the strong coupling between conduction electrons and optical phonons of the local low-energy vibrational mode.

Abstract: Two routes were investigated to selectively recover lead and minor metals (Cu, Ni, Zn) from a sulfide-rich lead smelter residue, matte. The first route comprises a two-step leaching process that combines Fe(III)-HNO3 leaching with roasting, followed by water leaching. In the first step, the efficiency of Pb leaching was 90% at the optimum condition (L/S ratio 8, 0.5 mol.L-1 HNO3, 0.15 mol.L-1 Fe(III), 25 degrees C). In the second step, roasting at 600 degrees C followed by water leaching at 50 degrees C selectively leached Ni, Cu, and Zn while fully converting iron sulfides to oxides. One-step oxidative pressure leaching in HNO3 was investigated as an alternative to simultaneously leach Pb, Cu, Ni and Zn. At the optimal conditions (130 degrees C, 60 min, 0.3 mol.L-1 HNO3, 0.07 mol.L-1 Fe(III), L/S ratio 20), Pb, Cu, Zn and Ni leaching were 92, 60, 70 and 66%, respectively, while Fe leaching remained low (2%). The leachates obtained from both leaching routes were treated by ion-exchange adsorption with diethylenetriaminepentaacetic acid (DTPA) functionalized chitosan-silica hybrid materials to investigate the selective recovery of Cu, Zn and Ni. The adsorption order appeared to be in the same order as the corresponding stability constants for complexes between the respective metal ions and free DTPA: Ca(II) < Zn(II) < Pb (II) approximate to Ni(II) < Cu(II). This allows not only to selectively recover Cu, Zn and Ni from the leachates, but also to mutually separate them by using the functionalized resin as a stationary phase in column chromatography. To avoid adsorbent contamination, Fe(III) and Pb(II) may be removed from the leachates in a pre-treatment step. Based on these results, the investigated methods can be combined as process steps of two possible routes for the selective recovery of valuable metals from the studied secondary lead smelting residue. The two-step leaching process seems to be superior since a more concentrated solution of Cu, Ni, and Zn is produced in the 2nd leaching step with low capital cost.

Abstract: Various theoretical and experimental methods are utilized to investigate the thermal conductivity of nanostructured materials; this is a critical parameter to increase performance of thermoelectric devices. Among these methods, equilibrium molecular dynamics (EMD) is an accurate technique to predict lattice thermal conductivity. In this study, by means of systematic EMD simulations, thermal conductivity of bulk Si-Ge structures (pristine, alloy and superlattice) and their nanostructured one dimensional forms with square and circular cross-section geometries (asymmetric and symmetric) are calculated for different crystallographic directions. A comprehensive temperature analysis is evaluated for selected structures as well. The results show that one-dimensional structures are superior candidates in terms of their low lattice thermal conductivity and thermal conductivity tunability by nanostructuring, such as by diameter modulation, interface roughness, periodicity and number of interfaces. We find that thermal conductivity decreases with smaller diameters or cross section areas. Furthermore, interface roughness decreases thermal conductivity with a profound impact. Moreover, we predicted that there is a specific periodicity that gives minimum thermal conductivity in symmetric superlattice structures. The decreasing thermal conductivity is due to the reducing phonon movement in the system due to the effect of the number of interfaces that determine regimes of ballistic and wave transport phenomena. In some nanostructures, such as nanowire superlattices, thermal conductivity of the Si/Ge system can be reduced to nearly twice that of an amorphous silicon thermal conductivity. Additionally, it is found that one crystal orientation, <100>, is better than the <111> crystal orientation in one-dimensional and bulk SiGe systems. Our results clearly point out the importance of lattice thermal conductivity engineering in bulk and nanostructures to produce high-performance thermoelectric materials.

Abstract: Several HNO3-based leaching approaches were tested and optimized to selectively recover Pb and other minor metals (Cu, Ni, Zn) from secondary lead smelter residues (i.e., slag and matte). Firstly, the leaching behaviors of Pb and the matrix element Fe were studied at atmospheric pressure in the temperature range 25-70 degrees C. These elements were present in both materials studied as sulfide and oxide phases. For the sulfur-rich matte residue, the Pb leaching increased from 63% to 69% upon increasing the HNO3 concentration from 0.2 M to 0.5 M. However, by adding Fe(III) as an oxidation agent, Pb leaching from the matte amounted to 90% at 25 degrees C. At a higher temperature, Pb leaching was reduced due to PbSO4 precipitation. In this process, Cu, Zn and Ni leaching was insignificant. For the slag residue, HNO3 could not leach Pb (0.03% Pb leached), while Fe leaching was 19.8% due to a galvanic effect. However, Pb leaching of the slag was 82% in the presence of additional Fe(III). Secondly, to enhance leaching of the other base metals (Cu, Zn and Ni) from the matte, roasting followed by water leaching and (microwave assisted or autoclave) pressurized leaching in 0.5 M HNO3 were applied. During roasting, the FeS phase converted to Fe2O3 above 500 degrees C, and PbS and Pb phases were transformed into insoluble PbSO4 above 400 degrees C. Cu, Ni and Zn leaching was drastically enhanced by a roasting step at 600 degrees C followed by leaching with 0.5 M HNO3 at 50 degrees C, or by pressurized HNO3 leaching above 130 degrees C, whereby Pb leaching almost ceased due to PbSO4 precipitation. During the roasting above 600 degrees C, or microwave assisted extraction (MAE) at 160 degrees C for 15 min, FeS was completely converted to iron oxides that can be used as raw material for pig iron production. Based on the results, the methods investigated can be combined as process steps of two possible routes for the selective recovery of valuable metals and the production of a clean source of Fe oxides from the secondary lead smelting residues studied. Abstract: Promising biomedical uses for nonthermal plasma (NTP) in the fields of regenerative medicine, cancer therapy, and vaccine delivery involve the noninvasive application of uniform nonequilibrium plasma (including dielectric barrier discharge plasma) to living skin. Whereas most investigations have focused on achieving desired therapeutic outcomes, fewer studies have examined the mechanisms and pathways by which epithelial cells respond to NTP exposure. Using a transwell apical-basolateral-chambered system to culture the human keratinocyte HaCaT cell line, in vitro experiments were performed to demonstrate the effects of nanosecond-pulsed dielectric barrier discharge (nsDBD) plasma on polarized epithelial cell viability, monolayer permeability, intracellular oxidative stress, and the release of adenosine triphosphate (ATP). Application of nsDBD plasma at 60 Hz or below had minimal or no effect on HaCaT monolayer viability or permeability. nsDBD plasma exposure did, however, result in frequency-dependent reductions in intracellular glutathione (indicating direct induction of oxidative stress by nsDBD plasma) and increased extracellular ATP concentrations in the ba-solateral (subepithelial) media, which are indicators of cellular stress and an NTP-induced inflammatory response. These studies provide new insights into nsDBD plasma-induced inflammation and local innate immune responses initiated by polarized epithelial tissues.

Abstract: A study has been conducted on the leaching of two fungicides, tebuconazole and cymoxanil, in a soil amended with spent mushroom substrate (SMS), with an evaluation of how different factors influence this process.The objective was based on the potential use of SMS as a biosorbent for immobilizing pesticides in vulnerable soils, and the need to know how it could affect the subsequent transport of these retained compounds. Breakthrough curves (BTCs) for C-14-fungicides, non-incubated and incubated over 30 days, were obtained in columns packed with an unamended soil (S), and this soil amended with SMS at rates of 5% (S + SMS5) and 50% (S + SMS50) under saturated and saturated-unsaturated flows. The highest leaching of tebuconazole (> 50% of the total C-14 added) was found in S when a saturated water flow was applied to the column, but the percentage of leached fungidde decreased when a saturated-unsaturated flow was applied in both SMS-amended soils. Also a significant decrease in teaching was observed for tebuconazole after incubation in the column, especially in S + SMS50 when both flows were applied. Furthermore, cymoxanil leaching was complete in S and S + SMS when a saturated flow was applied, and maximum peak concentrations were reached at 1 pore volume (PV), although BTCs showed peaks with lower concentrations in S + SMS. The amounts of cymoxanil retained only increased in S + SMS when a saturated-unsaturated flow was applied. A more relevant effect of SMS for reducing the leaching of fungidde was observed when cymoxanil was previously incubated in the column, although mineralization was enhanced in this case. These results are of interest for extending SMS application on the control of the leaching of fungicides with different physicochemical characteristics after different ageing times in the soil and water flow conditions applied. Abstract: The current transport capability of YBa2Cu3O7-x(YBCO) based coated conductors (CCs) is mainly limited by two features: the grain boundaries of the used textured template, which are transferred into the superconducting film through the buffer layers, and the ability to pin magnetic flux lines by incorporation of defined defects in the crystal lattice. By adjusting the deposition conditions, it is possible to tailor the pinning landscape in doped YBCO in order to meet specific working conditions (T, B) for CC applications. To study these effects, we deposited YBCO layers with a thickness of about 1-2 mu m using pulsed laser deposition on buffered rolling-assisted biaxially textured Ni-W substrates as well as on metal tapes having either an ion-beam-texturedYSZbuffer or an MgO layer textured by inclined substrate deposition. BaHfO3 and the mixed double-perovskite Ba2Y(Nb/Ta)O-6 were incorporated as artificial pinning centers in these YBCO layers. X-ray diffraction confirmed the epitaxial growth of the superconductor on these templates as well as the biaxially oriented incorporation of the secondary phase additions in the YBCO matrix. A critical current density J(c) of more than 2 MA/cm(2) was achieved at 77 K in self-field for 1-2 mu m thick films. Detailed TEM (transmission electron microscopy) studies revealed that the structure of the secondary phase can be tuned, forming c-axis aligned nanocolumns, ab-oriented platelets, or a combination of both. Transport measurements show that the J(c) anisotropy in magnetic fields is reduced by doping and the peak in the J(c) (theta) curves can be correlated to the microstructural features.
