“LPE growth and characterization of InGaAsP/InP heterostructures: IR-emitting diodes at 1.66 μm: application to the remote monitoring of methane gas”. Volkov VV, van Landuyt J, Marushkin K, Gijbels R, Férauge C, Vasilyev MG, Shelyakin AA, Sokolovsky AA, Sensors and actuators : A : physical 62, 624 (1997). http://doi.org/10.1016/S0924-4247(97)01377-0
Abstract: Highly effective IR light-emitting diodes operating at the wavelength 1.66 mu m and based on the buried heterostructure In0.88Ga0.12As0.26P0.74/ In0.72Ga0.28As0.62P0.38/In0.53Ga0.47As/InP have been grown by liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) and characterized in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM),electron diffraction (ED), X-ray diffraction (XRD), secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and electroluminescence measurements. The InGaAsP epilayers are found to be well lattice matched and of good structural quality. A tentative explanation is presented for the spinodal decomposition observed in InGaAsP alloys. A new type of selective CK, gas sensor has been developed and fabricated an the basis of the IR light-emitting diode mentioned above. Especially designed for the remote control of CH4 gas via fibre optics, an integrated optoelectronic readout scheme has been developed and tested, It is shown that the proposed type of sensor can be used for the quantitative remote control of CH4 gas concentration (0.2-100%) via a fibre glass line up to a distance of 2 x 1 km. “Two-dimensional model of a direct current glow discharge : description of the argon metastable atoms, sputtered atoms and ions”. Bogaerts A, Gijbels R, Analytical chemistry 68, 2676 (1996). http://doi.org/10.1021/ac951206z
Abstract: A two-dimensional model is presented that describes the behavior of argon metastable atoms, copper atoms, and copper ions in an argon direct. current glow discharge, in the standard cell of the VG9000 glow discharge mass spectrometer for analyzing flat samples. The model is combined with a previously developed model for the electrons, argon ions, and atoms in the same cell to obtain an overall picture of the glow discharge, The results of the present model comprise the number densities of the described plasma species, the relative contributions of different production and loss processes for the argon metastable atoms, the thermalization profile of the sputtered copper atoms, the relative importance of the different ionization mechanisms for the copper atoms, the ionization degree of copper, the copper ion-to-argon ion density ratio, and the relative roles of copper ions, argon ions, and atoms in the sputtering process. All these quantities are calculated for a range of voltages and pressures, Moreover, since the sticking coefficient of copper atoms on solid surfaces is not well-known in the literature, the influence of this parameter on the results is briefly discussed.

“Ab initio study of the spectroscopy, kinetics, and thermochemistry of the C2N and CN2 molecules”. Martin JML, Taylor PR, François JP, Gijbels R, Chemical physics letters 226, 475 (1994). http://doi.org/10.1016/0009-2614(94)00758-6
Abstract: Several structures and electronic states of the C2N and CN2 molecules have been studied using complete active space SCF (CASSCF), multireference configuration interaction (MRCI), and coupled cluster (CCSD(T)) methods. Both molecules are very stable. Our best computed total atomization energies SIGMAD(e) are 288.6 +/- 2 kcal/mol for CN2, and 294.1 +/- 2 kcal/mol for C2N. The CNC and CCN structures for C2N are nearly isoenergetic. CNN(3PI) lies about 30 kcal/mol above NCN(3PI(g)), but has a high barrier towards interconversion and is therefore observed experimentally. Computed harmonic frequencies for CNN are sensitive to the correlation treatment: they are reproduced well using multireference methods as well as the CCSD(T) method. High spin contamination has a detrimental effect on computed harmonic frequencies at the CCSD(T) level.

Abstract: The six platinum group elements (Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir and Pt) can be determined in geological samples down to the μg kg−1 level, by using nickel sulphide fire assay and neutron activation of the residue ramaining after dissolution of the nickel sulphide button in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Losses for the platinum group elements during this dissolution step are usually insignificant, except when the elements are present at ultra-trace levels. The can be recovered from the filtrate by coprecipitation with tellerium. The latter approach also permits determination of silver, which is significantly lost in the hydrochloric acid treatment (recovery <98% instead of typically ≈ 10%). The coprecipitation with tellurium considerably improves the results for gold (recovery ≈ 95% instead of typically 75%).
