“Effect of diclofenac on the production of volatile fatty acids from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge”. Hu J, Zhao J, Wang D, Li X, Zhang D, Xu Q, Peng L, Yang Q, Zeng G, Bioresource technology 254, 7 (2018). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.BIORTECH.2018.01.059
Abstract: In this study, the impact of diclofenac (DCF), an antiinflammatory drug being extensively used in human health care and veterinary treatment, on the production of volatile fatty acids (VFAs) from anaerobic fermentation of waste activated sludge (WAS) was investigated for the first time. Experimental results showed that when DCF concentration increased from 2.5 to 25 mg/kg total suspended solid (TSS), the maximum production of VFAs increased from 599 to 1113 mg COD/L, but further increase of DCF to 47.5 mg/kg TSS decreased VFAs yield to 896 mg COD/L. The mechanism investigation revealed that DCF had no effect on the hydrolysis process, promoted the process of acidogenesis, acetogenesis, and homoacetogenesis, but severely inhibited methanogenesis, leading to the accumulation of VFAs. Microbial community analysis showed that the addition of DCF could promote the relative abundance of VFAs (especially acetic acid) producers, which was well consistent with the results obtained above.

“Lattice dynamics in Sn nanoislands and cluster-assembled films”. Houben K, Couet S, Trekels M, Menendez E, Peissker T, Seo JW, Hu MY, Zhao JY, Alp EE, Roelants S, Partoens B, Milošević, MV, Peeters FM, Bessas D, Brown SA, Vantomme A, Temst K, Van Bael MJ, Physical review B 95, 155413 (2017). http://doi.org/10.1103/PHYSREVB.95.155413
Abstract: To unravel the effects of phonon confinement, the influence of size and morphology on the atomic vibrations is investigated in Sn nanoislands and cluster-assembled films. Nuclear resonant inelastic x-ray scattering is used to probe the phonon densities of states of the Sn nanostructures which show significant broadening of the features compared to bulk phonon behavior. Supported by ab initio calculations, the broadening is attributed to phonon scattering and can be described within the damped harmonic oscillator model. Contrary to the expectations based on previous research, the appearance of high-energy modes above the cutoff energy is not observed. From the thermodynamic properties extracted from the phonon densities of states, it was found that grain boundary Sn atoms are bound by weaker forces than bulk Sn atoms.

“Interplay between lattice dynamics and superconductivity in Nb3Sn thin films”. Couet S, Peelaers H, Trekels M, Houben K, Petermann C, Hu MY, Zhao JY, Bi W, Alp EE, Menéndez E, Partoens B, Peeters FM, Van Bael MJ, Vantomme A, Temst K;, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 88, 045437 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.88.045437
Abstract: We investigate the link between superconductivity and atomic vibrations in Nb3Sn films with a thickness ranging from 10 to 50 nm. The challenge of measuring the phonon density of states (PDOS) of these films has been tackled by employing the technique of nuclear inelastic scattering by Sn-119 isotopes to reveal the Sn-partial phonon density of states. With the support of ab initio calculations, we evaluate the effect of reduced film thickness on the PDOS. This approach allows us to estimate the changes in superconducting critical temperature T-c induced by phonon confinement, which turned out to be limited to a few tenths of K. The presented method is successful for the Nb3Sn system and paves the way for more systematic studies of the role of phonon confinement in Sn-containing superconductors.

“Synthesis, crystal structure, and properties of KSbO3-type Bi3Mn1.9Te1.1O11”. Li MR, Retuerto M, Bok Go Y, Emge TJ, Croft M, Ignatov A, Ramanujachary KV, Dachraoui W, Hadermann J, Tang MB, Zhao JT, Greenblatt M;, Journal of solid state chemistry 197, 543 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jssc.2012.07.038
Abstract: Single crystals of Bi3Mn1.9Te1.1O11 were prepared from NaCl+KCl flux. This compound adopts KSbO3-type crystal structure as evidenced by electron and single crystal X-ray diffraction analysis. The three-dimensional channel structure is formed by corner-sharing octahedral (Mn0.63Te0.37)2O10 dimers and two identical (Bi1)4(Bi2)2 interpenetrating lattices. The intra-dimer Mn/TeMn/Te distances in Bi3Mn1.9Te1.1O11 are short and are consistent with weak metalmetal interactions. The mixed oxidation state of manganese and the edge-sharing octahedral features are confirmed by X-ray near edge absorption spectroscopy measurements, which indicate Bi3(MnIII1.1MnIV0.8)TeVI1.1O11 with 57.7% Mn3+ and 42.3% Mn4+. The partial substitution of Te for Mn perturbs long-range magnetic interactions, thereby destroying the ferromagnetic ordering found in Bi3Mn3O11 (TC=150 K).
