Abstract: Multiwall carbon nanotubes are produced by decomposition of acetylene at 600 degreesC on metal catalysts supported on NaY zeolite. The support and the metal are eliminated by dissolving them in aqueous hydrofluoric acid (HF). Two methods were used to eliminate the pyrolitic carbon: oxidation in air at 500 degreesC and oxidation by potassium permanganate in acidic solution at 70 degreesC. The progress and efficacy of the purification methods are verified by TEM. The properties of the purified multiwalled carbon nanotubes are probed using C-13 and Xe-129 NMR spectroscopy under continuous-flow optical-pumping conditions. Xenon is shown to penetrate the interior of the nanotubes. A distribution of inner tube diameters gives rise to chemical shift dispersion. When the temperature is lowered, an increasing fraction of xenon resides inside the nanotubes and is not capable of exchanging with xenon in the interparticle space. In the case of the permanganate-oxidized sample, rapid xenon relaxation is attributed to interaction with residual MnO2 nanoparticles in the interior of the tubes.

Abstract: Using pulsed laser deposition ultra-thin DyBa2Cu3O7-x films were deposited on a single terminated (0 0 1) SrTiOr(3) substrate. The initial growth was studied by high-resolution electron microscopy. Two different types of interface arrangements occur and were determined as: bulk-SrO-TiO2-BaO-CuO-BaO-CuO2-Dy-CuO2-BaO bulk and bulk-SrO-TiO2-BaO-CuO2-Dy-CuO2-BaO-CuO-BaO-bulk This variable growth sequence causes structural shifts, resulting in antiphase boundaries with displacement vector R = [0 0 1/3]. as well as local chemical variations. Abstract: Nanoprecipitates in YBa2Cu3O7‐δ(YBCO) thin films have been identified by high resolution electron microscopy (HREM) as Y2O3 inclusions; they correspond to two different types of epitaxial relationships namely [001] or [110] parallel to the YBCOc‐axis. The [001] precipitates are situated near the YBCO surface, in the bulk and on the YBCO film/substrate interface. The [110] precipitates have only been observed at the surface. Literature data have been reinterpreted.

Abstract: A two-dimensional model is presented that describes the behavior of argon metastable atoms, copper atoms, and copper ions in an argon direct. current glow discharge, in the standard cell of the VG9000 glow discharge mass spectrometer for analyzing flat samples. The model is combined with a previously developed model for the electrons, argon ions, and atoms in the same cell to obtain an overall picture of the glow discharge, The results of the present model comprise the number densities of the described plasma species, the relative contributions of different production and loss processes for the argon metastable atoms, the thermalization profile of the sputtered copper atoms, the relative importance of the different ionization mechanisms for the copper atoms, the ionization degree of copper, the copper ion-to-argon ion density ratio, and the relative roles of copper ions, argon ions, and atoms in the sputtering process. All these quantities are calculated for a range of voltages and pressures, Moreover, since the sticking coefficient of copper atoms on solid surfaces is not well-known in the literature, the influence of this parameter on the results is briefly discussed.

“Why are sputter deposited Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-\delta thin films flatter than NdBa2Cu3O7-\delta films?”.Bals S, Van Tendeloo G, Salluzzo M, Maggio-Aprile I, Applied physics letters 79, 3660 (2001). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.1421622
Abstract: High-resolution electron microscopy and scanning tunneling microscopy have been used to compare the microstructure of NdBa2Cu3O7-delta and Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-delta thin films. Both films contain comparable amounts of Nd2CuO4 inclusions. Antiphase boundaries are induced by unit cell high steps at the substrate or by a different interface stacking. In Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-delta the antiphase boundaries tend to annihilate by the insertion of extra Nd layers. Stacking faults, which can be characterized as local Nd2Ba2Cu4O9 inclusions, also absorb the excess Nd. A correlation is made between the excess Nd and the absence of growth spirals at the surface of the Nd-rich films. (C) 2001 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: The use of a detailed Monte Carlo simulation code for X-ray fluorescence spectrometers is demonstrated for calculating the outcome of X-ray scattering experiments in the incident energy range 40-80 keV. The code was validated by comparisons of experimental and simulated spectral distributions in the case of thick, homogeneous samples in which multiple photon scattering occurs with high probability. The experimental spectral distributions were collected at beamline BW5 of HASYLAB, Germany, where a highly energetic, monochromatic synchrotron beam is available. With respect to heterogeneous samples, the code was employed to evaluate the use of Rayleigh and Compton scatter signals for obtaining three dimensional information on the sample dark matrix composition.
