Abstract: The structure and defect structure of Bi2-xPbxSr3.5Cu2 (CO3)O8-delta compounds with 0 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 0.75 are carefully investigated by electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy. All compounds have an orthorhombic structure with a almost-equal-to b almost-equal-to 5.4 angstrom and c almost-equal-to 39.5 angstrom. The length of the b-axis decreases monotonically with increasing x. The space group for the basic structure is Abm2. The structure can be considered as an intergrowth of Bi2Sr2CuO6 lamellae with Sr2CuO2 (CO3) lamellae along the c-axis. CO3 groups behave as bridges connecting the CuO6 octahedra. In the x = 0 compound the carbon atoms are shifted away from their symmetry positions; the orientational ordering of the CO3 groups (or the carbon shift) in successive CO planes alternates along +b and -b. Typical Bi-type and Pb-type modulations are found along the b-axis up to a Pb content x = 0.5. Electron beam irradiation destroys the ordering of the CO3 groups and alters the modulated structure. Abstract: The ternary oxides Ba8Ta4Ti3O24 and Ba10Ta7.04Ti1.2O30 were synthesized and their crystal structures and defects were studied by means of X-ray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, and high resolution electron microscopy. The crystal structure of Ba8Ta4Ti3O24 is based on the 8H (cchc)(2) close-packed stacking (a 10.0314 Angstrom, c = 18.869 Angstrom, SG P6(3)/mcm, Z = 3) and that of Ba10Ta7.04Ti1.2O30 and on the 10H (cchcc)(2) close-packed stacking (a = 5.7981 Angstrom, c = 23.755 Angstrom, SG P6(3)/mmc, Z = 1) of BaO3 layers. The structural refinements gave the following values for the R factors for Ba8Ta4Ti3O24 (Ba10Ta7.04Ti1.2O30) R(I) = 0.041 (0.039), R(P) = 0.108 (0.118), and R(wP) = 0.094 (0.099). The main feature of both structures is the presence of two types of face-sharing octahedra (FSO) with different occupancies by Ta atoms, Ti atoms, and vacancies, which results in the formation of a superstructure. It was shown that in the Ba8Ta4Ti3O24 structure these pairs of FSO occur in an ordered fashion and in the Ba10Ta7.04Ti1.2O30 structure in a disordered fashion. The existence of the wide range of solid solutions was shown to be also a consequence of the presence of one of the two types of face-sharing octahedra. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc,

Abstract: The quartic force field of thioformaldehyde has been calculated ab initio using large basis sets and augmented coupled cluster methods. Calculated fundamentals are in excellent agreement with experiment, as is the most important Coriolis coupling constant. Computed values for the anharmonicity, rovibrational coupling, and centrifugal distortion constants of the four isotopomers (H2CS)-S-32, (H2CS)-S-34, (HDCS)-S-32, and (D2CS)-S-32 have been reported. Predictions have been made for all vibrational transitions from the ground state to excited states with at most two quanta for these isotopomers, both using second-order perturbation theory corrected for Darling-Dennison resonance and using vibrational SCF-CI calculations. For (D2CS)-S-32, perturbation theory performs quite well; for the other isotopomers, performance is poorer for states involving excitation of the out-of-plane bend and, for the (H2CS)-S-32 and (H2CS)-S-34 isotopomers, also for the antisymmetric bend that is in severe Coriolis resonance with it. Abstract: We report on magnetisation of individual superconducting particles with size down to 0.1 micron. The non-invasive access to properties of such small objects has become possible using submicron Hall probes which detect a local magnetic field and work effectively as micro-fluxmeters similar to, e.g., SQUIDs but with an effective detection loop of only about a square micron. We have found that the spatial confinement of superconductivity in a small volume gives rise to dramatic changes in thermodynamic properties of mesoscopic superconductors. Abstract: The magnetic coupling between two concentric mesoscopic superconductors with nonzero thickness is studied using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. We calculated the free energy, the expelled field, the total field profile, the Cooper-pair density, and the current density distribution. By putting a smaller superconducting disk or ring in the center of a larger ring, the properties change drastically. Extra ground-state transitions are found, where the total vorticity stays the same, but the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes by 1. Due to the magnetic coupling, the current in the external ring exhibits extra jumps at the transition fields where the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes. In this case, for certain temperatures, re-entrant behavior and switching on and off of the superconducting behavior of the rings are found as a function of the magnetic field. A H-T phase diagram is obtained for the situation where the inner ring has a higher critical temperature than the outer ring. An analytic expression for the magnetic coupling is obtained for thin rings and extreme type-II superconductors.

Abstract: We investigate low-temperature magnetotransport of high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases subjected to one-dimensional periodic magnetic and electric modulations. Our previous quantum perturbation theory is extended to lower temperatures and the energy broadening due to impurity scattering is incorporated. Numerical calculations are made for situations where several Landau bands overlap. We find that the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations are dominated by collisional resistance. The amplitudes of the SdH oscillations are strongly modulated and the positions of the SdH minima switch between even and odd Landau-level filling factors, in the resistance both parallel and perpendicular to the one-dimensional modulation. This is a consequence of the internal structure (i.e., smeared out van Hove singularities) of overlapping Landau bands. Our theoretical results are in good agreement with recent experiments.
