Abstract: The six platinum group elements (Ru, Rh, Pd, Os, Ir and Pt) can be determined in geological samples down to the μg kg−1 level, by using nickel sulphide fire assay and neutron activation of the residue ramaining after dissolution of the nickel sulphide button in concentrated hydrochloric acid. Losses for the platinum group elements during this dissolution step are usually insignificant, except when the elements are present at ultra-trace levels. The can be recovered from the filtrate by coprecipitation with tellerium. The latter approach also permits determination of silver, which is significantly lost in the hydrochloric acid treatment (recovery <98% instead of typically ≈ 10%). The coprecipitation with tellurium considerably improves the results for gold (recovery ≈ 95% instead of typically 75%).

“Determination of silicon in natural and pollution aerosols by 14-MeV neutron activation analysis”. Gijbels R, Dams R, Analytica chimica acta 63, 369 (1973). http://doi.org/10.1016/S0003-2670(01)82362-X
Abstract: The determination of silicon via the 28Si(n,p)28 Al reaction by means of 14-MeV neutrons is applied to the analysis of pollution and natural aerosols. A Whatman 41 filter (40 cm2) on which airborne particulate material has been collected is compressed into a 3 × 12.7 mm pellet. Standards are prepared in the same way from clean filters spiked with a silicate solution. After a 50-s irradiation and a 75-s decay time, the sample is counted for 2 min with 5 × 5 NaI(Tl) well detector. The 1.779-MeV photopeak of 28Al is measured with a single channel sealer chain or with a multichannel analyser. The reproducibility, sensitivity and liability to interference from other elements were investigated for both counting systems. The homogeneity of the pellets and the filters was checked. The overall precision of one single-channel determination was estimated to be 3.5% after a 24-h high-volume sampling time. Samples collected in urban, industrial and remote areas with concentrations ranging from 0.05 to 15 μg Si m-3 air were analysed and the results are discussed.

“The determination of silicon in steel by 14-mev neutron activation analysis”. van Grieken R, Gijbels R, Speecke A, Hoste J, Analytica chimica acta 43, 199 (1968). http://doi.org/10.1016/S0003-2670(00)89208-9
Abstract: A fast (25 min) non-destructive determination of silicon in steel by 14-MeV neutron activation is described. The 1.78-MeV 28Al activity, induced by the reaction 28Si(n,p)28Al, is counted on a NaI(Tl) detector. An oxygen flux monitor is used to normalise to the same neutron flux. Two methods are described to correct for the 56Mn activity (2.58 h), induced into the iron matrix via 56Fe(n,p)56Mn. Nuclear interferences of phosphorus and aluminium have been examined. Special attention has been paid to stainless steels. A sensitivity of 0.02 to 0.05% of silicon is obtained. The precision is 2 to 3% for steels containing above 1% silicon, and 7% for 0.1% of silicon.

Abstract: For column structures, such as fee-based alloys viewed along the cube direction, the concept of electron channelling through the atom columns is more and more used to interpret the corresponding HREM images. In the case of(partially) disordered columns, the projected potential approach which is used in the channelling description must be questioned since the arrangement of the atoms along the beam direction might affect the exit wave of the electrons. In this paper, we critically inspect this top-bottom effect using multi-slice calculations. A modified channelling theory is introduced which turns out to be very appropriate for the interpretation of these results. For substitutionally disordered column structures, it is also discussed how to link the chemical composition of the material to statistical data of the HREM image. This results in a convenient tool to discern images taken at different thicknesses and focus values.

Abstract: The one vortex entry in a superconducting disk is investigated within the non-linear Ginzburg-Landau theory near the first critical field. We find that in mesoscopic superconducting disks the magnetic flux enters with fractions of one flux quantum phi(0) = ch/2e. For disks with a very smooth surface it is possible to drive the Meissner state so far into the metastable region that at the vortex entry a net amount of flux is expelled from the superconductor. We show that the magnetic field for flux entry is very sensitive to indentations of the disk surface and only weakly to bulges. On the other hand the flux exit field is practically insensitive to such geometrical surface defects. Our results are in agreement with recent experimental findings. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: We present an approximate description of the giant vortex state in a thin mesoscopic superconducting disk within the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau approach. Analytical asymptotic expressions for the energies of the states with fixed vorticity are obtained when a small magnetic flux is accumulated in the disk. The spectrum of the lowest Landau levels of such a disk is also discussed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: High-quality single crystals of Rb2ZnCl4 and K2ZnCl4, pure or doped with Cu, Mn, Cd, Tl, Sn, Pb and In cations, were grown by Czochralski technique in argon atmosphere, using an experimental setup that allows direct visual access to the whole growth zone. Slowly cooled crystals exhibit excellent cleavage properties. Fastly cooled crystals do cleave poorly. As shown by X-ray diffraction studies, such K2ZnCl4 samples exhibit inclusions of the high-temperature Pmcn phase with lattice parameters a = 7.263(2) Angstrom, b = 12.562(2) Angstrom and c = 8.960(4) Angstrom in the P2(1) cn room temperature stable phase. ESR and optical spectroscopy studies revealed the localization and valence state of the cation dopants. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: This HREM investigation focuses on the influence of point defects on the final epitaxial relation and atomic interface configuration in a CoSi2/Si(1 0 0) heterostructure. A two-step SPE-MBE grown CoSi2/Si(1 0 0) system is used and, by altering the number of deposited Co monolayers in the template layer, the point defect behavior is studied. We propose a film growth model in which the knowledge about the reconstructed (2 x 1) : Si(1 0 0) surface, the point defect behavior in the presence of an interface, especially a silicide interface, the migration of point defects through a lattice by formation of [1 0 0]-split interstitial (dumbbell) atomic configurations, and a new type of extended defect configurations in diamond type materials will all amalgamate. Abstract: Homogenised and quenched Ni65Al35 samples were heated and studied in situ in a CM20 electron microscope up to 900 degrees C. The Ni5Al3 phase first forming around 550 degrees C in the quenched L1(0) microtwinned martensite starts to decompose around 800 degrees C yielding B2 precipitates in a twinned L1(2) matrix. The latter twinning is a remainder of the microtwinning in the original room temperature martensite. Also the crystallographic relations between precipitates and matrix can be traced back to the original formation of twinned martensite plates within the austenite. Some aspects of the dynamics of the process are discussed on the basis of snap shots and video recordings.
