“Superconductivity in the quantum-size regime”. Shanenko AA, Croitoru MD, Peeters FM, , 79 (2008)
Abstract: Recent technological advances resulted in high-quality superconducting metallic nanofilms and nanowires. The physical properties of such nanostructures are governed by the size-quantization of the transverse electron spectrum. This has a substantial impact on the basic superconducting characteristics, e.g., the order parameter, the critical temperature and the critical magnetic field. In the present paper we give an overview of our theoretical results on this subject. Based on a numerical self-consistent solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we investigate how the superconducting properties are modified in the quantum-size regime.

Abstract: Correlated noise is generally present in experimentally recorded electron energy loss spectra due to a non-ideal electron detector. In this contribution we describe a method to experimentally measure the noise properties of the detector as well as the consequences it has for model-based quantification using maximum likelihood. The effect of the correlated noise on the maximum likelihood fitting results can be shown to be negligible for the estimated (co)variance of the parameters while an experimentally obtained scaling factor is required to correct the likelihood ratio test for the reduction of noise power with frequency. Both effects are derived theoretically under a set of approximations and tested for a range of signal-to-noise values using numerical experiments. Finally, an experimental example shows that the correction for correlated noise is essential and should always be included in the fitting procedure. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

“Structural characterization of Er-doped Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 glass ceramics”. Krsmanovic R, Bals S, Bertoni G, Van Tendeloo G, Optical materials 30, 1183 (2008). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.optmat.2007.05.045
Abstract: Particularly favourable properties of glass ceramics are developed on the basis of two key advantages of these materials: the variation of chemical composition and of microstructure. Therefore, detailed structural and chemical information are necessary to get insight in novel glass ceramic materials. We present here two examples of Er-doped Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2, with different quantities of ZrO2, both obtained with sol-gel synthesis. Different transmission electron microscopy techniques: conventional TEM, HRTEM, and EELS are used and the results are compared with those previously obtained with XRD and Rietveld analysis. We also demonstrate the 3D reconstruction, obtained from HAADF-STEM imaging, to determine the morphology of nanosize precipitates in these composites. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

“'On tomorrow's grounds' : Flemish agriculture in 2030: a case of participatory translation of sustainability principles into a vision for the future”. Nevens F, Dessein J, Meul M, Rogge E, Verbruggen I, Mulier A, Van Passel S, Lepoutre J, Hongenaert M, Journal Of Cleaner Production 16, 1062 (2008). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.JCLEPRO.2007.06.007
Abstract: In Flanders (Belgium) there is an obvious lack of clear long-term vision on sustainable development, for society as a whole as well as for the individual sectors of (economic) activity. In this paper we present the first results of a process of vision development for Flemish agriculture, called On tomorrow's grounds. The initiative, taken by Stedula (the Flemish Policy Research Centre for Sustainable Agriculture), shows that discovering core values, stating a concise mission, establishing guiding core principles and working with vivid descriptions of envisaged future systems seem indispensable elements to develop a vision that inspires and mobilizes people and that, eventually, stands a chance of being anchored in the sector's or organisation's culture. The principal method of working of the project was a multi-stakeholder process (MSP) focussed on dialogue. During five extensive stakeholder meetings, representatives of farmers, service industries, food distribution, education, government, research, consumers and NGO's participated in a constructive dialogue on values and mission, principles and two vivid descriptions of envisioned future farms. The concept of the project was welcomed and supported by the Flemish Minister-President and by the Belgian federal state secretary for sustainable development.

Abstract: Hollow silica spheres were quickly synthesized by an octylamine (OA) templating method using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the silica source. N2-sorption results indicate that the hollow spheres have high surface areas and pore volumes. XRD and TEM measurements reveal that the structure of the hollow spheres depends on the amount of TEOS used in the synthesis. When low amount of TEOS is added, the template-containing precursor spheres depict an XRD pattern with two peaks, which can be indexed to a lamellar phase. After the removal of the template, the obtained hollow spheres show no diffraction peaks in the XRD pattern, suggesting that the nanopores in the silica shells are disordered. If increasing the amount of TEOS, either the uncalcined or the calcined sample gives an XRD pattern with a single diffraction peak. The mesostructure of these hollow silica spheres is typically as HMS materials. TGA analyses suggest that the interaction between the silica species and surfactant is stronger in the latter case.

Abstract: We present energy filtered holography experiments on a thin foil of Al. By propagating the reduced density matrix of the probe electron through the microscope, we quantitatively predict the fringe contrast as a function of energy loss. Fringe contrast simulations include the effect of Fresnel fringes created at the edges of the defocused biprism, the effect of partial coherence in combination with inelastic scattering, and the effect of a finite energy distribution of the incoming beam. Abstract: Insulating and metallic stripes above and below the Curie temperature, T-C, respectively, were observed by a high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and/or spectroscopy (STS) in A-site ordered and macroscopically strain free epitaxial La0.75Ca0.25MnO3 film grown on MgO substrate. The “insulating” stripes were found to be incommensurable to the lattice and aligned along (110) direction. Metallic stripes were commensurable with periodicity 2a(p)similar to 0.8 nm and aligned parallel to the crystallographic a/b-axis. Formation of these stripes involves competing charge, orbital, and lattice orders and is an outcome of an overlapping of electron wave functions mediated by the local lattice-strain distribution, existed even in A-site ordered film due to the difference in cation radii of La and Ca.
