Abstract |
High-resolution electron microscopy is used to study the initial growth of different REBa2CU3O7-5 thin films. In DyBa2CU3O7-5 ultra-thin films, deposited on TiO2 terminated SrTiO3, two different types of interface arrangements occur: bulk-SrO-TiO2-BaO-CuO-BaO-CuO2-Dy-CuO2-BaO-bulk and bulk-SrO-TiO2-BaO-CuO2-Dy-CuO2-BaO-CuO-BaO-bulk. This variable growth sequence is the origin of the presence of antiphase boundaries. In Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-5 thin films, antiphase boundaries tend to annihilate by the insertion of extra Nd-layers. This annihilation is correlated with the flat morphology of the film and the absence of growth spirals at the surface of the Nd-rich films. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
Thin films of the superconducting Nd1+xBa2−xCu3O7−δ (NBCO) and Y1(NdxBa2−x)Cu3O7−δ (YNBCO) compounds have been deposited by dc magnetron sputtering and diode high pressure oxygen sputtering. Different techniques, including scanning tunneling microscopy, atomic force microscopy, X-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) have been used to study the film microstructures and the surface morphology. It is shown that the Nd/Ba exchange promotes a 2D heteroepitaxial growth in the case of the NBCO films deposited on (1 0 0) SrTiO3 substrates, with a suppression of the characteristic 3D spirals structures. On the contrary in YNBCO the Nd/Ba exchange does not provide a driving force for the suppression of screw-dislocations, since spirals or towers originated by screw and half loop dislocations are observed on the surface. TEM reveals that anti-phase boundaries are eliminated during the growth of NBCO films thanks to the Nd/Ba exchange while this mechanism is not operating in the case of YNBCO films. |

Abstract |
The perfect as well as the defect structure of several members of the superconducting family HgBa2Can-1CunO2n+2+delta have been studied in detail by electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy Identification of the cation configuration is possible, even in the defect regions, with the help of computer simulations. The fine structure of several defects is analyzed in detail, the most common defect being the intergrowth of slabs corresponding to different n values in the title formula. In general, however, the crystals are of a high perfection, particularly for the lower n members. The occurrence of double (HgO)delta layers is seen occasionally, indicating the possible existence of a material with a double mercury layer. Some of these defects are possibly related to recently discovered anomalies at 250 K in these compounds. |

Abstract |
A new superconducting mercury oxycarbonate, Pb0.7Hg0.3Sr4Cu2CO3O7, has been synthesized. This tetragonal phase (a = 3.824 angstrom, c= 16.468 angstrom) consists of an intergrowth of two nonsuperconducting compounds, Sr2CuO2CO3 and Pb0.7Hg0.3Sr2CuO5. It exhibits after optimization a critical temperature of 70 K, with a sharp transition and a superconducting volume fraction of 50%. Its behavior can be compared to that of thallium oxycarbonates previously isolated. This study is completed by a reinvestigation of the 1212 cuprate of the system Hg-Pb-Sr-Ca-Nd-Cu. A superconducting phase with the 1212 structure, similar to that previously obtained but with a significantly different composition, Pb0.7Hg0.3Sr2+xCa0.7Nd0.3-xCu2O7, has been obtained, with a T(c onset) of 100 K. The behavior of the latter is compared with other lead-based 1212 cuprates. |

Abstract |
Oxygen ordering has been investigated in superconducting ABa2Cu3O7-delta ceramic materials with A = Er, Nd, Sm and Yb, as well as in samples of this type with the rate earth A partially substituted by Pr. The critical temperature T(c) was determined as a function of the oxygen deficiency-delta of the compound and the corresponding microstructures were investigated by electron diffraction and electron microscopy. A distinct relationship exists between the width of the 60 K plateau and the ortho II ordering. Our results show that the ortho II ordered phase is the superconducting phase with a characteristic T(c) of 60 K. |

Abstract |
Analytical and high resolution electron microscopy have been used to study the effect of Zn- and Fe-doping on the micro structure of [001] YBa2Cu3O7-x thin films on [001] MgO substrates grown by magnetron sputtering. Special attention was paid to the presence of second phase inclusions and surface outgrowths such as CuO, Y2Ba1Cu1O5-x, Y2O3 in order to establish a relationship with the critical current density. |

Abstract |
YBCO-based materials containing SO4-tetrahedra centered on the Cu(1)-sites of the CuO-chain plane have been examined by means of electron diffraction and high resolution electron microscopy. An incommensurate modulation is observed and attributed to the ordering of b-oriented SO4-rich chains in the Cu(1)-S-O-layer, described in terms of an SO4-concentration wave. |

Abstract |
In Bi2Sr2Ca0.6Y0.4Cu2Oy single crystals we have identified the intergrowth of two phases; a normal Bi2Sr2CaCu2Oy type phase with a 4.6b modulation period and a secondary, phase with a 9.4b modulation period. Both the two phases have orthorhombic basic structures with similar lattice parameters but different symmetries, i.e. Bbmb for the normal phase and Ccca for the secondary phase. The c-parameters of these two phases are found to vary independently upon changing the nominal Y content. The modulation characteristics of the secondary phase implies a close structural relation between the two phases. Both phases are discussed from a structural and a compositional point of view. |

Abstract |
By means of electron diffraction the 2 root 2 a(p) x 2 root 2 a(p) phase, well-known in YBa2Cu3O7-delta was observed in two other perovskite-based materials (Y0.75Ce0.25)(2)(Sr0.85Y0.15)(2)AlCU2O9 and Bi1.8Pb0.4Sr2Ca2Cu3O10+x. Highly correlated ordering is observed in the ab-plane, the correlation along the c-direction being weak. The plane group of the superstructure symmetry elements was determined on the basis of observed reflection conditions in diffraction patterns. Our results unambiguously rule out oxygen ordering as a possible origin of the superstructure. Experimental evidence points out that the superstructure is associated with the CuO2 layers, that are the only structural elements common to the three compounds studied. A model is proposed where the CuO2 sheet is displacively modulated. Experimental evidence suggests a correlation between adjacent CuO2 sheets. Comparison of simulated and experimental [001] zone diffraction patterns strongly supports our model. |

Abstract |
A combination of CeO2 and PtO2 doping has been studied in melt-processed YBa2Cu3O7-x. This study was carried out using an optimized well established MTG process. The cerium-platinum doped samples exhibit a high fishtail effect with a J(c) of 4.3 x 10(4) A/cm(2) under an applied field of 1 T. Microstructural and nanostructural studies have been performed. The 211 and BaCeO3 inclusions are a few micrometers wide and the formation of a metastable nanocrystalline phase (Y4Ba4)Cu-8-x(Ce,Pt)(x)O-20+delta related to the perovskite is detected. The 123 grains show no specific extended defect generated by the doping process. The relationship between structure and properties are discussed. |

Abstract |
We report the complete disappearance of the structural modulation in heavily lead-doped Bi2-xPbxSr2CaCu2O8+delta crystals observed by transmission electron microscopy. Crystals with a nominal lead content of x = 0.8, corresponding to an effective lead content of x = 0.39, yield the non-modulated phase. The superconducting properties of this modulation-free phase (beta phase) have been studied and compared to those of undoped crystals displaying the modulated phase (alpha phase). Magnetisation measurements reveal that the irreversibility field H-irr(T) and relaxation rates are strongly improved within the beta phase. Measurements of the lower critical field, H-c1, show that the anisotropy factor, epsilon, is considerably reduced in the modulation-free crystals. This is the signature of stronger coupling between CuO2 layers which in turn deeply influences the effectiveness of the pinning. These measurements explain the enhanced pinning properties in moderately Pb-doped crystals in which the alpha phase and beta phase coexist. The enhanced pinning is not only due to the alpha/beta interfaces, which act as effective pinning centers: the emergence of modulation-free domains, characterized by a strongly reduced anisotropy, also significantly contribute to this effect. Abstract |
The stable and metastable states of different configurations of a mesoscopic loop in the form of an eight is studied in the presence of a magnetic field. We find that for certain configurations the current is equal to zero for any value of the magnetic field leading to a magnetic field independent superconducting state. The state with fixed phase circulation becomes unstable when the momentum of the superconducting electrons reaches a critical value. At this moment the kinetic energy of the superconducting condensate becomes of the same order as the potential energy of the Cooper pairs and it leads to an instability. Numerical analysis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations shows that the absolute value of the order parameter changes gradually at the transition from a state with one phase circulation to another although the vorticity change occurs abruptly. Abstract |
On the basis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation we studied the dynamics of the superconducting condensate in a wide two-dimensional sample in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and applied current. We could identify two critical currents: the current at which the pure superconducting state becomes unstable (J(c2)(1)) and the current at which the system transits from the resistive state to the superconducting state (J(c1) < J(c2)). The current J(c2) decreases monotonically with external magnetic field, while J(c1) exhibits a maximum at H*. For sufficient large magnetic fields the hysteresis disappears and J(c1) = J(c2) = Jc. In this high magnetic field region and for currents close to Jc the voltage appears as a result of the motion of separate vortices. With increasing current the moving vortices form, channels' with suppressed order parameter along which the vortices can move very fast. This leads to a sharp increase of the voltage. These 'channels' resemble in some respect the phase slip lines which occur at zero magnetic field. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
Within the framework of the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory we investigate how the vortex expulsion and penetration fields are influenced by the presence of surface defects in superconducting disks with zero thickness. We studied different types and sizes of defects. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
Transitions between different multivortex states and transitions between multivortex states and giant vortex states are observed in mesoscopic superconducting disks using the multiple-small-tunnel-junction method. These results are compared to theoretical calculations within the framework of the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. We find a good qualitative agreement between the theoretical and experimental results, when we assume that a small defect is present near the center of the experimental sample. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V.
