Abstract: A procedure to derive the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory from the multiband BCS Hamiltonian is developed in a general case with an arbitrary number of bands and arbitrary interaction matrix. It combines the standard Gor'kov truncation and a subsequent reconstruction in order to match accuracies of the obtained terms. This reconstruction recovers the phenomenological GL theory as obtained from the Landau model of phase transitions but offers explicit microscopic expressions for the relevant parameters. Detailed calculations are presented for a three-band system treated as a prototype multiband superconductor. It is demonstrated that the symmetry in the coupling matrix may lead to the chiral ground state with the phase frustration, typical for systems with broken time-reversal symmetry. Abstract: Historical glass, especially medieval glass, can undergo weathering under the influence of time and environmental conditions. The aim of this investigation was to better understand the processes involved in this natural degradation process by studying artificially altered glass samples prepared for the use of evaluation of conservation methods. Non-durable glass sensors produced by the Fraunhofer Institute (type M1.0) were used as a starting material for artificial alteration. These were immersed in acidic (pH = 0, 2, 4) and neutral solutions (1 h – 8 h). In a second stage the glass samples were immersed in a 0.5 M MnCl2 solution (24 h, 48 h and 72 h), allowing intrusion of Mn from the solution into the gel layer. The samples were characterized at different stages with reflectance FTIR spectroscopy, mu XRF mapping and mu XANES. All measurements were carried out at ESRF, beamline ID21. Reflectance FTIR spectroscopy measurements were performed in the 800 4000 cm(-1) range. Cluster analysis of the resulting maps evidenced the rapid growth of the gel layer in strong acidic conditions. The average spectra for each cluster feature show for the original glass a strong Si-O- stretching band between 900 and 1000 cm(-1), whereas the gel layer could be identified by the increasing Si-O-Si bands around 1100 and 1250 cm(-1). mu XRF maps were recorded at different stages of the experiment at energies around the Mn-K edge (6.539 keV) and with a step size of 2 by 2 m. These confirm the leaching of K+ and Ca+2 from the glass and the intrusion of Mn from the solution. Mn was found throughout the entire gel layer, but with a concentration gradient peaking at the surface. XANES point measurements were recorded at various points where Mn was present. No spatial variation was found, but linear combination fitting of the spectra with various Mn reference compounds indicated that Mn2+Mn23+O4 is the main Mn compound in the gel layer, as was hypothesised by Watkinson et al. Abstract: Immobilization of photocatalytic powder is crucial to obtain industrially relevant purification processes. To achieve this goal, self-supporting TiO2 foams were manufactured by a polyacrylamide gel process. These gels were calcined at different temperatures to study the effect of the calcination temperature on foam characteristics (rigidity, crystallinity, and porosity) and its influence on photocatalytic activity. The results show that an optimal degradation is achieved for those foams calcined between 700 and 800°C. Calcination at higher temperatures results in a steep decrease in activity, explained by stability issues of the material due to formation of Na2SO4 phases and a larger rutile fraction.

Abstract: We report the Cr3+ for Mn3+ substitution in the BiMnFe2O6 structure. The BiCrxMn1-xFe2O6 solid solution is obtained by the solution-gel synthesis technique for the x values up to 0.3. The crystal structure investigation using a combination of X-ray powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy demonstrates that the compounds retain the parent BiMnFe2O6 structure (for x = 0.3, a = 5.02010(6)angstrom, b = 7.06594(7)angstrom, c = 12.6174(1)angstrom, S.G. Pbcm, R-1 = 0.036, R-p = 0.011) with only a slight decrease in the cell parameters associated with the Cr3+ for Mn3+ substitution. Magnetic susceptibility measurements suggest strong similarities in the magnetic behavior of BiCrxMn1-xFe2O6 (x = 0.2; 0.3) and parent BiMnFe2O6. Only T-N slightly decreases upon Cr doping that indicates a very subtle influence of Cr3+ cations on the magnetic properties at the available substitution rates. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract: Charge carriers in single and multilayered graphene systems behave as chiral particles due to the particular lattice symmetry of the crystal. We show that the interplay between the meta-material properties of graphene multilayers and the pseudospinorial properties of the charge carriers result in the occurrence of Klein and anti-Klein tunneling for rhombohedral stacked multilayers. We derive an algebraic formula predicting the angles at which these phenomena occur and support this with numerical calculations for systems up to four layers. We present a decomposition of an arbitrarily stacked multilayer into pseudospin doublets that have the same properties as rhombohedral systems with a lower number of layers. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2013

Abstract: Recently fabricated single-crystalline atomically flat metallic nanofilms are in fact quantum-engineered multiband superconductors. Here the multiband structure is dictated by the nanofilm thickness through the size quantization of the electron motion perpendicular to the nanofilm. This opens the unique possibility to explore superconductivity in well-controlled multi-band systems. However, a serious obstacle is the absence of a convenient and manageable theoretical tool to access new physical phenomena in such quasi-two-dimensional systems, including interplay of quantum confinement and fluctuations. Here we cover this gap and construct the appropriate multiband Ginzburg-Landau functional for nano-thin superconductors. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2013

Abstract: The tunneling current has been computed for a cylindrical nanowire tunneling field-effect transistor (TFET) with an all-round gate that covers the source region. Being the underlying mechanism, band-to-band tunneling, mediated by electron-phonon interaction, is pronouncedly affected by carrier confinement in the radial direction and, therefore, involves the self-consistent solution of the Schrodinger and Poisson equations. The latter has been accomplished by exploiting a non-linear variational principle within the framework of the modified local density approximation taking into account the nonparabolicity of both the valence band and conduction band in relatively thick wires. Moreover, while the effective-mass approximation might still provide a reasonable description of the conduction band in relatively thick wires, we have found that the nonparabolicity of the valence band needs to be included. As a major conclusion, it is observed that confinement effects in nanowire tunneling field-effect transistors have a stronger impact on the onset voltage of the tunneling current in comparison with planar TFETs. On the other hand, the value of the onset voltage is found to be overestimated when the valence band nonparabolicity is ignored. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract: Pb2Ba2BiFe4ScO13, a new n = 5 member of the oxygen-deficient perovskite-based A(n)B(n)O(3n-2) homologous series, was synthesized using a solid-state method. The crystal structure of Pb2Ba2BiFe4ScO13 was investigated by a combination of synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy and Mossbauer spectroscopy. At 900 K, it crystallizes in the Ammm space group with the unit cell parameters a = 5.8459(1) angstrom, b = 4.0426(1) angstrom, and c=27.3435(1) angstrom. In the Pb2Ba2BiFe4ScO13 structure, quasi-two-dimensional perovskite blocks are periodically interleaved with 1/2[1 1 0] ((1) over bar 0 1)(p) crystallographic shear (CS) planes. At the CS planes, the corner-sharing FeO6 octahedra are transformed into chains of edge-sharing FeO5 distorted tetragonal pyramids. B-positions of the perovskite blocks between the CS planes are jointly occupied by Fe3+ and Sc3+. The chains of the FeO5 pyramids and (Fe,Sc)O-6 octahedra delimit six-sided tunnels that are occupied by double columns of cations with a lone electron pair (Pb2+). The remaining A-cations (Bi3+, Ba2+) occupy positions in the perovskite block. According to the magnetic susceptibility measurements, Pb2Ba2BiFe4ScO13 is antiferromagnetically ordered below T-N approximate to 350 K. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The conductance, the transmission, and the reflection probabilities through rectangular potential barriers and p-n junctions are obtained for bilayer graphene taking into account the four bands of the energy spectrum. We have evaluated the importance of the skew hopping parameters gamma(3) and gamma(4) to these properties and show that for energies E > gamma(1)/100 their effect is negligible. For high energies two modes of propagation exist and we investigate scattering between these modes. For perpendicular incidence both propagation modes are decoupled, and scattering between them is forbidden. This extends the concept of pseudospin as defined within the two-band approximation to a four-band model and corresponds to the (anti) symmetry of the wave functions under in-plane mirroring. New transmission resonances are found that appear as sharp peaks in the conductance which are absent in the two-band approximation. The application of an interlayer bias to the system (1) breaks the pseudospin structure, (2) opens a band gap that results in a distinct feature of suppressed transmission in the conductance, and (3) breaks the angular symmetry with respect to normal incidence in the transmission and reflection.

Abstract: The influence of the deposition rate on the formation of growth twins in nanocrystalline Pd films deposited by electron beam evaporation is investigated using transmission electron microscopy. Statistical measurements prove that twin boundary (TB) density and volume fraction of grains containing twins increase with increasing deposition rate. A clear increase of the dislocation density was observed for the highest deposition rate of 5 Å/s, caused by the increase of the internal stress building up during deposition. Based on crystallographic orientation indexation using transmission electron microscopy, it can be concluded that a {111} crystallographic texture increases with increasing deposition rate even though the {101} crystallographic texture remains dominant. Most of the TBs are fully coherent without any residual dislocations. However, for the highest deposition rate (5 Å/s), the coherency of the TBs decreases significantly as a result of the interaction of lattice dislocations emitted during deposition with the growth TBs. The analysis of the grain boundary character of different Pd films shows that an increasing fraction of high angle grain boundaries with misorientation angles around 5565° leads to a higher potential for twin formation.

Abstract: We present a theoretical study of the electrical generation of acoustic-phonon emission from graphene at room temperature. The drift velocity (v(x)) and temperature of electrons driven by dc electric field (F-x) are determined by solving self-consistently the momentum-and energy-balance equations derived from the Boltzmann equation. We find that in the presence of impurity, acoustic-and optic-phonon scattering, v(x) can be much larger than the longitudinal (v(l)) and transverse (v(t)) sound velocities in graphene even within the linear response regime. As a result, although the acoustic Cerenkov effect cannot be obviously seen in the analytical formulas, the enhanced acoustic-phonon emission can be observed with increasing F-x when v(x) > v(l) and v > v(t). The frequency of acoustic-phonon emission from graphene can be above 10 THz, which is much higher than that generated from conventional semiconductor systems. Abstract: The energy level alignment in metal-organic and organic-organic junctions of the widely used materials tris-(8-hydroxyquinoline) aluminum (Alq(3)) and 1,4,5,8-naphthalenetetracarboxylic dianhydride (NTCDA) is investigated. The measured alignment schemes for single and bilayer films of Alq(3) and NTCDA are interpreted with the integer charge transfer (ICT) model. Single layer films of Alq(3) feature a constant vacuum level shift of similar to 0.2-0.4 eV in the absence of charge transfer across the interface. This finding is attributed to the intrinsic dipole of the Alq(3) molecule and (partial) ordering of the molecules at the interfaces. The vacuum level shift changes the onset of Fermi level pinning, as it changes the energy needed for equilibrium charge transfer across the interface. (C) 2013 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract: A LuFe2O4+delta sample, previously characterized by X-ray synchrotron and neutron diffraction, has been studied by electron microscopy techniques, in order to get a precise description of its micro- and nanostructures at room temperature. The X-ray synchrotron data vs. temperature show that the monoclinic distortion is associated with the charge ordering; this distortion results in elongated twinning domains, which enhance the complexity of the microstructural state at room temperature. The structural modulation associated with oxygen excess is observed in large domains inside a non modulated matrix, in contrast with the modulations associated with the charge ordering of the Fe2+ and Fe3+ species, which are mostly short-range. The investigation of the nature and density of defects in the sample shows that they are nano-scaled, preserving the regularity of the layer stacking mode, and limited to the formation of one- or two-units large stacking faults, associated with gliding mechanisms. Based on these observations, an original description of the LuFe2O4 ferrite structure, through puckered [LuO4](infinity) sandwiching [Fe-2](infinity) layers, is proposed. Abstract: The unique plasma-specific features and physical phenomena in the organization of nanoscale soild-state systems in a broad range of elemental composition, structure, and dimensionality are critically reviewed. These effects lead to the possibility to localize and control energy and matter at nanoscales and to produce self-organized nano-solids with highly unusual and superior properties. A unifying conceptual framework based on the control of production, transport, and self-organization of precursor species is introduced and a variety of plasma-specific non-equilibrium and kinetics-driven phenomena across the many temporal and spatial scales is explained. When the plasma is localized to micrometer and nanometer dimensions, new emergent phenomena arise. The examples range from semiconducting quantum dots and nanowires, chirality control of single-walled carbon nanotubes, ultra-fine manipulation of graphenes, nano-diamond, and organic matter to nano-plasma effects and nano-plasmas of different states of matter.
