Abstract: The three-dimensional (3D) structure and chemical composition of bamboo-like carbon nanotubes including the catalyst particles that are. used during their growth are studied by discrete electron tomography in combination with energy-filtered transmission electron microscopy. It is found that cavities are present in the catalyst particles. Furthermore, only a small percentage of the catalyst particles consist of pure Cu, since a large volume fraction of the particles is oxidized to CU(2)0. These volume fractions are determined quantitatively from 3D reconstructions obtained by discrete tomography.

Abstract: Insulating and metallic stripes above and below the Curie temperature, T-C, respectively, were observed by a high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and/or spectroscopy (STS) in A-site ordered and macroscopically strain free epitaxial La0.75Ca0.25MnO3 film grown on MgO substrate. The “insulating” stripes were found to be incommensurable to the lattice and aligned along (110) direction. Metallic stripes were commensurable with periodicity 2a(p)similar to 0.8 nm and aligned parallel to the crystallographic a/b-axis. Formation of these stripes involves competing charge, orbital, and lattice orders and is an outcome of an overlapping of electron wave functions mediated by the local lattice-strain distribution, existed even in A-site ordered film due to the difference in cation radii of La and Ca. Abstract: We present energy filtered holography experiments on a thin foil of Al. By propagating the reduced density matrix of the probe electron through the microscope, we quantitatively predict the fringe contrast as a function of energy loss. Fringe contrast simulations include the effect of Fresnel fringes created at the edges of the defocused biprism, the effect of partial coherence in combination with inelastic scattering, and the effect of a finite energy distribution of the incoming beam. Abstract: Hollow silica spheres were quickly synthesized by an octylamine (OA) templating method using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the silica source. N2-sorption results indicate that the hollow spheres have high surface areas and pore volumes. XRD and TEM measurements reveal that the structure of the hollow spheres depends on the amount of TEOS used in the synthesis. When low amount of TEOS is added, the template-containing precursor spheres depict an XRD pattern with two peaks, which can be indexed to a lamellar phase. After the removal of the template, the obtained hollow spheres show no diffraction peaks in the XRD pattern, suggesting that the nanopores in the silica shells are disordered. If increasing the amount of TEOS, either the uncalcined or the calcined sample gives an XRD pattern with a single diffraction peak. The mesostructure of these hollow silica spheres is typically as HMS materials. TGA analyses suggest that the interaction between the silica species and surfactant is stronger in the latter case.

Abstract: In the Mg4−xNixNb2O9 (0x4) system two ranges of solid solution have been found. One of the solid solutions has a corundum-related structure type (space group ); the second one adopts the II-Ni4Nb2O9 structure type (space group Pbcn). The unit cell constants and atomic positions have been determined and refined using neutron powder diffraction data. Electron diffraction and high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) from MgNi3Nb2O9 crystals identify the presence of planar defects and the intergrowth of several (structurally related) phases. The magnetic susceptibility of Mg3NiNb2O9, measured in the temperature range T=2300 K, shows no indications of magnetic ordering at low temperatures, while for MgNi3Nb2O9 there is a magnetic ordering at temperatures below 45.5 K.

Abstract: Microstructural investigations with transmission electron microscopy were carried out on quenched Ni-Ti alloys with 52 and 54.5 at% Ni. For the Ni52Ti48 specimen long time exposed diffraction patterns of a single grain show besides the expected reflections of the B2-phase, two sets of extra reflections in different zones. The first type of spots is explained by lattice displacement waves, which are regarded as precursors of the martensitic Ni-Ti phases, B 19' and R-phase, respectively. The second set of reflection with more diffuse intensity than the other reflections is related to Ni4Ti3 precipitates in an early state of formation. For the Ni-richer Ni54.5Ti45.5 alloy only Ni4Ti3 precipitates in an early state of formation are found but no precursors of the B 19'- and R-phase.

Abstract: ITEM specimens of a LaAlO3/SrTiO3 multilayer are prepared by FIB with internal lift out. Using a Ga+1 beam of 5 kV, a final cleaning step yielding top, top-angle, side, and bottom-angle cleaning is performed. Different cleaning procedures, which can be easily implemented in a dual beam FIB system, are described and compared; all cleaning types produce thin lamellae, useful for HRTEM and HAADF-STEM work up to atomic resolution. However, the top cleaned lamellae are strongly affected by the curtain effect. Top-angle cleaned specimens show an amorphous layer of around 5 nm at the specimen surfaces, due to damage and redeposition. Furthermore, it is observed that the LaAlO3 layers are preferentially destroyed and transformed into amorphous material, during the thinning process.

Abstract: Basic results concerning oxygen ordering in the superconducting compound YBa2Cu3Oz are briefly summarized. It is shown that, at equilibrium, only infinite-chain structures can be stabilized and those models based on hypothetical (and actually nonphysical) screened Coulomb interactions cannot produce stable ground states. It is suggested that diffraction data (neutrons, X-rays, electrons) from oxygen-lean samples are indicative of metastable displacive transformations, and are not directly related to oxygen ordering.

Abstract: Single crystals with two different morphologies, black and brown, of C60 with about 12% C70 have been studied by synchrotron X-ray diffraction. Integrated intensities from 8 reflections show that the charge distribution of the C60 cluster is shell-like giving rise to an oscillatory behaviour in the diffracted intensities. From the intensities, the distance between diametrically opposite carbon atoms has been determined to be (7.24 +/- 0.22) angstrom. The thickness of the charge distribution of the shell can be estimated as 3.06 angstrom and the cavity within a C60 cluster to have a diameter of about 4.18 angstrom. The finite longitudinal width of the diffraction peaks from black crystals indicates a lack of long-range crystalline order. The rocking curves are about 7-degrees broad and depict an unusually smooth behaviour. This may be indicative of a glassy or hexatic phase. High-resolution electron microscopy allows small crystallites with a relatively well-defined orientation relationship to be identified. In contrast, brown crystals have long-range order.

Abstract: Cubic as well as hexagonal single crystals of C70 have been grown and investigated by electron diffraction, electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. Several phase transitions have been detected and crystallographic models are proposed. Hexagonal crystals, stable at room temperature with c/a = 1.63 will undergo two transitions, upon cooling. First the c/a ratio will increase to 1.82 owing to c-axis allignment of the molecules; at a lower temperature the molecules will orientationally order, resulting in a monoclinic structure.
