Abstract: Magnet0transport measurements in pulsed fields up to 46 T and at temperatures between 1.4 and 210 K have been performed on thin semimetallic epitaxial layers of Sc1-xErxAs buried inside insulating GaAs. A consistent description is obtained of the magnetic field dependence of the Hall resistance and the different frequencies of the Shubnikov-de Hass oscillations.

Abstract: The multiband effective-mass model of cylindrical self-assembled quantum dots in a magnetic field normal to the layer of the quantum dots is presented. The strain distribution is computed by the valence force field method. The strain-dependent multiband Hamiltonian is modified into an axially symmetric form, which commutes with the total angular momentum F-2 = fh. where f denotes the total magnetic quantum number. The heavy hole and the light hole parts in the mixed hole state are resolved. It is found that the heavy hole component dominates in the ground states for both f = 1/2 and 3/2. The electronic structure exhibits numerous anticrossings between the hole levels. The Zeeman splitting between the +\f\ and -\f\ states is also computed. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: We have calculated analytically the spatial distribution of the electric field and current density, and obtained the Joule heat generation rate in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) subjected to a non-homogeneous magnetic field of a 'chess' configuration. The generation of the Joule heat from the 2DEG is mainly concentrated near the singular corners of each 'chess' field and tends to zero in other corners. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: We report the suppression of the Hall effect in a mesoscopic Hall cross with a strong magnetic field only in the centre and vanishingly small outside, The local magnetic field is produced by placing Dy pillar on top of a structure with a high-mobility two-dimensional electron gas. The effect is found to be due to a sharp increase of the number of back-scattered and quasi-localised electron orbits. The possibility of localising electrons inside the magnetic inhomogeneity region is discussed. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Spatially nonhomogeneously spin polarized nuclei are proposed as a new mechanism to monitor electron states in a nanostructure, or as a means to create and, if necessary, reshape such nanostructures in the course of the experiment. We found that a polarization of nuclear spins may lift the spin polarization of the electron states in a nanostructure and, if sufficiently strong, leads to a polarization of the electron spins. Polarized nuclear spins may form an energy landscape capable of binding electrons with energy up to several meV and the localization radius > 100 Angstrom. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: The ground state of a classical two-dimensional (2D) system with a finite number of charge particles, trapped by two positive impurity charges localized at a distance (z(0)) from the. 2D plane and separated from each other by a distance chi(p) are obtained. The impurities are allowed to carry more than one positive charge. This classical system can form a 2D-like classical molecule that exhibits structural transitions and spontaneous symmetry breaking as function of the separation between the positive charges before it transforms into two 2D-like classical atoms. We also observe structural transitions as a function of the dielectric constant of the substrate which supports the charged particles, in addition to broken symmetry states and unbinding of particles. Abstract: We investigate the effects of the finite confining potential V0 on the absorption and emission scattering rates of electrons interacting with LO phonons for a cylindrical GaAs quantum wire. The emission rates are qualitatively similar to those of the 2D case. The absorption rates on the other hand exhibit two different regimes: 1) for a wire radius smaller than a certain value (80 Å in the case where V0 = 190 meV) the behavior is similar to the 2D and 3D analogues, but 2) for larger radius the absorption rates initially increase with increasing energy, reach a maximum value and then decrease monotonicaly. A complete study is made as a function of wire radius, and electron energy.

Abstract: We report on magnetisation of individual superconducting particles with size down to 0.1 micron. The non-invasive access to properties of such small objects has become possible using submicron Hall probes which detect a local magnetic field and work effectively as micro-fluxmeters similar to, e.g., SQUIDs but with an effective detection loop of only about a square micron. We have found that the spatial confinement of superconductivity in a small volume gives rise to dramatic changes in thermodynamic properties of mesoscopic superconductors. Abstract: The magnetic coupling between two concentric mesoscopic superconductors with nonzero thickness is studied using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. We calculated the free energy, the expelled field, the total field profile, the Cooper-pair density, and the current density distribution. By putting a smaller superconducting disk or ring in the center of a larger ring, the properties change drastically. Extra ground-state transitions are found, where the total vorticity stays the same, but the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes by 1. Due to the magnetic coupling, the current in the external ring exhibits extra jumps at the transition fields where the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes. In this case, for certain temperatures, re-entrant behavior and switching on and off of the superconducting behavior of the rings are found as a function of the magnetic field. A H-T phase diagram is obtained for the situation where the inner ring has a higher critical temperature than the outer ring. An analytic expression for the magnetic coupling is obtained for thin rings and extreme type-II superconductors.

Abstract: We calculate the equilibrium properties and the dynamic response of two vertically coupled circular quantum dots populated by particles of different electrical charge sign, i.e., electrons and holes. The equilibrium density profiles are obtained and used to compute the frequencies and oscillator strengths of magnetoplasma excitations. We find a strong coupling between the modes derived from the center-of-mass modes of the individual dots which leads to an anticrossing with a pronounced oscillator strength transfer from the “acoustic” to the “optical” branch. Also, due to the breaking of the generalized Kohn theorem a number of other than center-of-mass modes are excited whose oscillator strengths, however, are rather weak.

Abstract: We investigate low-temperature magnetotransport of high-mobility two-dimensional electron gases subjected to one-dimensional periodic magnetic and electric modulations. Our previous quantum perturbation theory is extended to lower temperatures and the energy broadening due to impurity scattering is incorporated. Numerical calculations are made for situations where several Landau bands overlap. We find that the Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillations are dominated by collisional resistance. The amplitudes of the SdH oscillations are strongly modulated and the positions of the SdH minima switch between even and odd Landau-level filling factors, in the resistance both parallel and perpendicular to the one-dimensional modulation. This is a consequence of the internal structure (i.e., smeared out van Hove singularities) of overlapping Landau bands. Our theoretical results are in good agreement with recent experiments.

Abstract: The nonuniform superconducting state in a ring in which the order parameter vanishing at one point is studied. This state is characterized by a jump of the phase by pi at the point where the order parameter becomes zero. In uniform rings such a state is a saddle-point state and consequently unstable. However, for nonuniform rings with, e.g., variations of geometrical or physical parameters or with attached wires this state can be stabilized and may be realized experimentally.

Abstract: Explicit analytic expressions are obtained for the density of states D(E) and Fermi energy E-F of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a weak and periodic unidirectional electric or magnetic modulation and of a uniform perpendicular magnetic field B. The Landau levels broaden into bands and their width, proportional to the modulation strength, oscillates with B and gives rise to Weiss oscillations in D(E), E-F and the transport coefficients. When both electric and magnetic modulations are present the position of the resulting oscillations depends on the ratio delta between the two modulation strengths. When the modulations are out of phase there is no shift in the position of the oscillations when delta varies and for a particular value of delta the oscillations are suppressed.
