“Techno-economic assessment of pyrolysis char production and application : a review”. Abstract: Many organic residue streams such as pig manure are not or inefficiently used, although they can be converted into valuable materials, as well as energy, using pyrolysis. The yield of the pyrolysis products (i.e. oil, gas and char) is dependent on the process conditions and the feedstock used. Char as a soil amendment or activated carbon are interesting options for valorization of biomass residues. Here, a review is presented of the techno-economic potential of both valorization options based on literature and own experiments with wood from phytoremediation, particle board and waste from beer production. The term “biochar” is specifically used to designate pyrolysis char that is intentionally applied to soil in order to enhance its structure and fertility. Biochar applications are often also motivated by the objective of climate change mitigation. Two main disadvantages for the economic feasibility of biochar applications have been discerned. Firstly, carbon sequestration in agricultural crops and soils is not yet eligible under the Clean Development Mechanism. Secondly, the impact of biochar on crop productivity is unclear. Activated carbon (AC) seems to have interesting adsorption characteristics resulting in potentially high sales prices. A preliminary techno-economic assessment showed that AC production is preferred above oil production for wood from phytoremediation as long as the market price of 2 kEUR.t(-1) for commercially available ACs can be attained. Whenever a feedstock with high nitrogen content is available (e.g. particle board with melamine urea formaldehyde resin), even higher market prices might be attained. This study shows that valorization of the pyrolysis char might be an answer to the slow adoption of pyrolysis in commercial applications. Focus in research and development, for instance in future research with regard to pig manure valorization, should therefore be on sustainable products with high economic value and direct utilization potential.

Abstract: Despite the general belief that hydrogen-bonded ferro- and antiferroelectrics undergo a pure order/disorder transition at the structural instability, new NMR data and a new theoretical concept yield convincing evidence that a pronounced displacive component is present in these systems, which modifies substantially the temperature dependencies of the tunnel and lattice mode frequencies. “Structure and properties of (Sr,Ca)CuO2-BaCuO2 superlattices grown by pulsed laser interval deposition”. Koster G, Verbist K, Rijnders G, Rogalla H, Van Tendeloo G, Blank DHA, Physica: C : superconductivity 353, 167 (2001). http://doi.org/10.1016/S0921-4534(00)01763-9
Abstract: We report on the preparation of CuBa(2)(Sr(x)Ca(1-x))(n)Cu(n-1)O(y) compounds by fabrication of (Ba,Sr,Ca)CuO(2) superlattices with pulsed laser deposition (PLD). A technique called interval deposition is used to suppress multi-level or island growth resulting in high-quality superlattice structures. Both, the applicability of PLD to atomic engineering as well as the fabrication of artificial superconductors is demonstrated. The (Sr,Ca)CuO(2)-BaCuO(2) superlattices are characterized by X-ray diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and selected area electron diffraction. The superlattice period has been deduced from electron diffraction patterns and XRD measurements. For Sr containing films, the best growth behavior is observed and films with the highest degree of crystallinity are obtained, whereas superconductivity is only found in less crystalline, Ca containing films. Under some deposition conditions and depending on the amount of Ba containing layers in the superlattice, it was observed that the BaCuO(2) material is converted to Ba(2)CuO(4-delta). Image simulations to interpret the HREM contrast are performed. (C) 2001 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The magneto-Stark effect in a diluted magnetic semiconductor (DMS) coupled quantum well (CQW) induced by an in-plane magnetic field is investigate theoretically. Unlike the usual electro-Stark effects, in a DMS CQW the Lorenz force leads to a spatially separated exciton. The in-plane magnetic field can shift the ground state of the magnetoexciton from a zero in-plane center of mass (CM)/momentum to a finite CM momentum, and render the ground state of magnetoexciton stable against radiative recombination due to momentum conservation. Abstract: Explicit analytic expressions are obtained for the density of states D(E) and Fermi energy E-F of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a weak and periodic unidirectional electric or magnetic modulation and of a uniform perpendicular magnetic field B. The Landau levels broaden into bands and their width, proportional to the modulation strength, oscillates with B and gives rise to Weiss oscillations in D(E), E-F and the transport coefficients. When both electric and magnetic modulations are present the position of the resulting oscillations depends on the ratio delta between the two modulation strengths. When the modulations are out of phase there is no shift in the position of the oscillations when delta varies and for a particular value of delta the oscillations are suppressed.

Abstract: We investigate the effects of the finite confining potential V0 on the absorption and emission scattering rates of electrons interacting with LO phonons for a cylindrical GaAs quantum wire. The emission rates are qualitatively similar to those of the 2D case. The absorption rates on the other hand exhibit two different regimes: 1) for a wire radius smaller than a certain value (80 Å in the case where V0 = 190 meV) the behavior is similar to the 2D and 3D analogues, but 2) for larger radius the absorption rates initially increase with increasing energy, reach a maximum value and then decrease monotonicaly. A complete study is made as a function of wire radius, and electron energy.

“Structural aspects of Bi2-xPbxSr3.5Cu2(CO3)O8-\delta for 0\leq x\leq0.75 : an electron-microscopy study”. Zhang XF, Van Tendeloo G, Amelinckx S, Pelloquin D, Michel C, Hervieu M, Raveau B, Journal of solid state chemistry 113, 327 (1994). http://doi.org/10.1006/jssc.1994.1378
Abstract: The structure and defect structure of Bi2-xPbxSr3.5Cu2 (CO3)O8-delta compounds with 0 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 0.75 are carefully investigated by electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy. All compounds have an orthorhombic structure with a almost-equal-to b almost-equal-to 5.4 angstrom and c almost-equal-to 39.5 angstrom. The length of the b-axis decreases monotonically with increasing x. The space group for the basic structure is Abm2. The structure can be considered as an intergrowth of Bi2Sr2CuO6 lamellae with Sr2CuO2 (CO3) lamellae along the c-axis. CO3 groups behave as bridges connecting the CuO6 octahedra. In the x = 0 compound the carbon atoms are shifted away from their symmetry positions; the orientational ordering of the CO3 groups (or the carbon shift) in successive CO planes alternates along +b and -b. Typical Bi-type and Pb-type modulations are found along the b-axis up to a Pb content x = 0.5. Electron beam irradiation destroys the ordering of the CO3 groups and alters the modulated structure.
