Abstract |
Besides classical electrode materials pertaining to Li-ion batteries, recent interest has been devoted to pairs of active redox composites having a redox center and an intercalant source. Taking advantage of the NaPFG salt decomposition above 4.2 V. we extrapolate this concept to the electrochemical in situ preparation of F-based MnO composite electrodes for Na-ion batteries. Such electrodes exhibit a reversible discharge capacity of 145 mAh g(-1) at room temperature. The amorphization of pristine MnO electrode after activation is attributed to the electrochemical grinding effect caused by substantial atomic migration and lattice strain build-up upon cycling. Abstract |
Design and optimization of materials properties can only be performed through a thorough knowledge of the structure of the compound. In this feature article we illustrate the possibilities of advanced electron microscopy in materials science and solid state chemistry. The different techniques are briefly discussed and several examples are given where the structures of complex oxides, often with a modulated structure, have been solved using electron microscopy. |

Abstract |
The interaction of silicene, the silicon counterpart of graphene, with (0001) ZnS surfaces is investigated theoretically, using first-principles simulations. The charge transfer occurring at the silicene/(0001) ZnS interface leads to the opening of an indirect energy band gap of about 0.7 eV in silicene. Remarkably, the nature (indirect or direct) and magnitude of the energy band gap of silicene can be controlled by an external electric field: the energy gap is predicted to become direct for electric fields larger than about 0.5 V angstrom(-1), and the direct energy gap decreases approximately linearly with the applied electric field. The predicted electric field tunable energy band gap of the silicene/(0001) ZnS interface is very promising for its potential use in nanoelectronic devices. |

Abstract |
Lanthanumcerium oxide (LCO) films were deposited on Ni-5%W substrates by chemical solution deposition (CSD) from water-based precursors. LCO films containing different ratios of lanthanum and cerium ions (from CeO2 to La2Ce2O7) were prepared. The composition of the layers was optimized towards the formation of LCO buffer layers, lattice-matched with the superconducting YBa2Cu3Oy layer, useful for the development of coated conductors. Single, crack-free LCO layers with a thickness of up to 140 nm could be obtained in a single deposition step. The crystallinity and microstructure of these lattice-matched LCO layers were studied by X-ray diffraction techniques, RHEED and SEM. We find that only layers with thickness below 100 nm show a crystalline top surface although both thick and thin layers show good biaxial texture in XRD. On the most promising layers, AFM and (S)TEM were performed to further evaluate their morphology. The overall surface roughness varies between 3.9 and 7.5 nm, while the layers appear much more dense than the frequently used La2Zr2O7 (LZO) systems, showing much smaller nanovoids (12 nm) than the latter system. Their effective buffer layer action was studied using XPS. The thin LCO layers supported the growth of superconducting YBCO deposited using PLD methods. |

Abstract |
The (AO)(ABO3)n Ruddlesden-Popper structure is an archetypal complex oxide consisting of two distinct structural units, an (AO) rock salt layer separating an n-octahedra thick perovskite block. Conventional high-temperature oxide synthesis methods cannot access members with n > 3, but low-temperature layer-by-layer thin film methods allow the preparation of materials with thicker perovskite blocks, exploiting high surface mobility and lattice matching with the substrate. This paper describes the growth of an n = 6 member CaO[(CSMO)2(LCMO)2 (CSMO)2] in which the six unit cell perovskite block is sub-divided into two central La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO) and two terminal Ca0.85Sm0.15MnO3 (CSMO) layers to allow stabilization of the rock salt layer and variation of the transition metal charge. |

Abstract |
Mineralogy offers a large database to search for Li- or Na-based compounds having suitable structural features for acting as electrode materials, LiFePO4 being one example. Here we further explore this avenue and report on the electrochemical properties of the bloedite type compounds Na2M(SO4)(2)center dot 4H(2)O (M = Mg, Fe, Co, Ni, Zn) and their dehydrated phases Na2M(SO4)(2) (M = Fe, Co), whose structures have been solved via complementary synchrotron X-ray diffraction, neutron powder diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Among these compounds, the hydrated and anhydrous iron-based phases show electrochemical activity with the reversible release/uptake of 1 Na+ or 1 Li+ at high voltages of similar to 3.3 V vs. Na+/Na-0 and similar to 3.6 V vs. Li+/Li-0, respectively. Although the reversible capacities remain lower than 100 mA h g(-1), we hope this work will stress further the importance of mineralogy as a source of inspiration for designing eco-efficient electrode materials. |

Abstract |
The absence of a direct-to-indirect band gap transition in ReS2 when going from the monolayer to bulk makes it special among the other semiconducting transition metal dichalcogenides. The functionalization of this promising layered material emerges as a necessity for the next generation technological applications. Here, the structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of substitutionally doped ReS2 monolayers at either the S or Re site were systematically studied by using first principles density functional calculations. We found that substitutional doping of ReS2 depends sensitively on the growth conditions of ReS2. Among the large number of non-metallic atoms, namely H, B, C, Se, Te, F, Br, Cl, As, P. and N, we identified the most promising candidates for n-type and p-type doping of ReS2. While Cl is an ideal candidate for n-type doping, P appears to be the most promising candidate for p-type doping of the ReS2 monolayer. We also investigated the doping of ReS2 with metal atoms, namely Mo, W, Ti, V. Cr, Co, Fe, Mn, Ni, Cu, Nb, Zn, Ru, Os and Pt. Mo, Nb, Ti, and V atoms are found to be easily incorporated in a single layer of ReS2 as substitutional impurities at the Re site for all growth conditions considered in this work. Tuning chemical potentials of dopant atoms energetically makes it possible to dope ReS2 with Fe, Co, Cr, Mn, W, Ru, and Os at the Re site. We observe a robust trend for the magnetic moments when substituting a Re atom with metal atoms such that depending on the electronic configuration of dopant atoms, the net magnetic moment of the doped ReS2 becomes either 0 or 1 mu(B). Among the metallic dopants, Mo is the best candidate for p-type doping of ReS2 owing to its favorable energetics and promising electronic properties. |

Abstract |
The thermal behavior under air of LiFePO(4)-based powders was investigated through the combination of several techniques such as temperature-controlled X-ray diffraction, thermogravimetric analysis and Mossbauer and NMR spectroscopies. The reactivity with air at moderate temperatures depends on the particle size and leads to progressive displacement of Fe from the core structure yielding nano-size Fe(2)O(3) and highly defective, oxidized Li(x)Fe(y)PO(4) compositions whose unit-cell volume decreases dramatically when the temperature is raised between 400 and 600 K. The novel LiFePO(4)-like compositions display new electrochemical reactivity when used as positive electrodes in Li batteries. Several redox phenomena between 3.4 V and 2.7 V vs. Li were discovered and followed by in-situ X-ray diffraction, which revealed two distinct solid solution domains associated with highly anisotropic variations of the unit-cell constants. |

Abstract |
Electron energy loss spectroscopy was used to investigate the bonding of plasma deposited carbon films. The experimental conditions include the use of a specific collection angle for which the shape of the spectra is free of the orientation dependency usually encountered in graphite due to its anisotropic structure. The first quantification process of the energy loss near-edge structure was performed by a standard fit of the collected spectrum, corrected for background and multiple scattering, with three Gaussian functions followed by a comparison with the graphite spectrum obtained under equivalent experimental conditions. In a second approach a fitting model directly incorporating the background subtraction and multiple scattering removal was applied. The final numerical results are interpreted in view of the deposition conditions of the films and the actual fitting procedure with the related choice of parameters. |

Abstract |
Polyester-grafted polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane (POSS) nanohybrids selectively produced by ring-opening polymerization of ε-caprolactone and L,L-lactide (A.-L. Goffin, E. Duquesne, S. Moins, M. Alexandre, Ph. Dubois, Eur. Polym. Journal, 2007, 43, 4103) were studied as masterbatches by melt-blending within their corresponding commercial polymeric matrices, i.e., poly(ε-caprolactone) (PCL) and poly(L,L-lactide) (PLA). For the sake of comparison, neat POSS nanoparticles were also dispersed in PCL and PLA. The objective was to prepare aliphatic polyester-based nanocomposites with enhanced crystallization behavior, and therefore, enhanced thermo-mechanical properties. Wide-angle X-ray scattering and transmission electron microscopy attested for the dispersion of individualized POSS nanoparticles in the resulting nanocomposite materials only when the polyester-grafted POSS nanohybrid was used as a masterbatch. The large impact of such finely dispersed (grafted) nanoparticles on the crystallization behavior for the corresponding polyester matrices was noticed, as evidenced by differential scanning calorimetry analysis. Indeed, well-dispersed POSS nanoparticles acted as efficient nucleating sites, significantly increasing the crystallinity degree of both PCL and PLA matrices. As a result, a positive impact on thermo-mechanical properties was highlighted by dynamic mechanical thermal analysis. |

Abstract |
The highly porous and desolvated (activated) coordination polymer [Zn4O(btb)2] (btb = benzene-1,3,5-tribenzoate; MOF-177) was loaded with the organometallic compounds [Cp2Fe], [Cp*2Zn], [Cu(OCHMeCH2NMe2)2], [CpCuL] (L = PMe3, CNtBu) and [CpPd(3-C3H5)] via solvent-free adsorption from the gas-phase. The inclusion compounds of the type [LnM]a@MOF-177, where [LnM] indicates the respective compound and the parameter a denotes the number of molecules per formula unit of the MOF-177, were characterised by elemental analysis, FT-IR, solid-state NMR spectroscopy and by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Remarkably high effective loadings of up to 11 molecules [Cp2Fe] and 10 molecules [CpPd(3-C3H5)] per cavity were determined. The analytical data prove that the host lattice and the guest molecules interact only by weak van-der-Waals forces without any significant change of the framework or the chemical nature of the included molecules. Cu nanoparticles showing the typical surface plasmon resonance at 580 nm and Pd nanoparticles of about 2.6 nm in size were formed inside the cavities of MOF-177 by the thermally activated hydrogenolysis of the inclusion compounds [CpCuCNtBu]2@MOF-177 and by photolysis of [CpPd(3-C3H5)]10@MOF-177 in an inert atmosphere (Ar). PXRD, FT-IR and NMR studies revealed that the MOF-177 matrix remained unchanged during the decomposition process of the precursors. N2 adsorption studies of the obtained materials Cu@MOF-177 (e.g. 10.6 wt.% Cu, 2309 m2 g-1) and Pd@MOF-177 (e.g. 32.5 wt.%, 1063 m2 g-1) reveal high remaining specific surface areas (Langmuir model). |

Abstract |
We present a high-throughput computing scheme based on density functional theory (DFT) to generate a class of oxides and screen them with the aim of identifying those that might be electronically appropriate for transparent conducting oxide (TCO) applications. The screening criteria used are a minimum band gap to ensure sufficient transparency, a band edge alignment consistent with easy n- or p-type dopability, and a minimum thermodynamic phase stability to be experimentally synthesizable. Following this scheme we screened 23 binary and 1518 ternary bixbyite oxides in order to identify promising candidates, which can then be a subject of an in-depth study. The results for the known TCOs are in good agreement with the reported data in the literature. We suggest a list of several new potential TCOs, including both n- and p-type compounds. |
