“Multiband k\cdot p calculation of exciton diamagnetic shift in InP/InGaP self-assembled quantum dots”. Tadić, M, Mlinar V, Peeters FM, Physica. E: Low-dimensional systems and nanostructures

Abstract: Exciton states in self-assembled InP/In0.49Ga0.51P quantum dots subject to magnetic fields up to 50T are calculated. Strain and band mixing are explicitly taken into account in the single-particle models of the electronic structure, while an exact diagonalization approach is adopted to compute the exciton states. Reasonably good agreement with magneto-photoluminescence measurements on InP self-assembled quantum dots is found. As a result of the polarization and angular momentum sensitive selection rules, the exciton ground state is dark. For in-plane polarized light, the magnetic field barely affects the exciton spatial localization, and consequently the exciton oscillator strength for recombination increases only slightly with increasing field. For z polarized light, a sharp increase of the oscillator strength beyond 30 T is found which is attributed to the enhanced s character of the relevant portion of the exciton wave function. “N-doped ordered mesoporous carbons prepared by a two-step nanocasting strategy as highly active and selective electrocatalysts for the reduction of O2 to H2O2”. Sheng X, Daems N, Geboes B, Kurttepeli M, Bals S, Breugelmans T, Hubin A, Vankelecom IFJ, Pescarmona PP, Applied catalysis : B : environmental 176-177, 212 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.apcatb.2015.03.049
Abstract: A new, two-step nanocasting method was developed to prepare N-doped ordered mesoporous carbon (NOMC) electrocatalysts for the reduction of O2 to H2O2. Our strategy involves the sequential pyrolysis of two inexpensive and readily available N and C precursors, i.e. aniline and dihydroxynaphthalene (DHN), inside the pores of a SBA-15 hard silica template to obtain N-doped graphitic carbon materials with well-ordered pores and high surface areas (764 and 877 m2g−1). By tuning the ratio of carbon sources to silica template, it was possible to achieve an optimal filling of the pores of the SBA-15 silica and to minimise carbon species outside the pores. These NOMC materials displayed outstanding electrocatalytic activity in the oxygen reduction reaction, achieving a remarkably enhanced kinetic current density compared to state-of-the-art N-doped carbon materials (−16.7 mA cm−2 at −0.35 V vs. Ag/AgCl in a 0.1 M KOH solution as electrolyte). The NOMC electrocatalysts showed high selectivity toward the two-electron reduction of oxygen to hydrogen peroxide and excellent long-term stability.

Abstract: It is well-known that the Ginzburg-Landau (GL) theory is a reliable and powerful theoretical tool to investigate the magnetic response of a superconducting state. However, in its standard form, this approach is not applicable to atomically uniform nano-thin superconducting films which are effective multiband superconductors. Here we discuss a relevant generalization of the GL theory, focusing on the underlying intraband-pairing approximation. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: A LuFe2O4+delta sample, previously characterized by X-ray synchrotron and neutron diffraction, has been studied by electron microscopy techniques, in order to get a precise description of its micro- and nanostructures at room temperature. The X-ray synchrotron data vs. temperature show that the monoclinic distortion is associated with the charge ordering; this distortion results in elongated twinning domains, which enhance the complexity of the microstructural state at room temperature. The structural modulation associated with oxygen excess is observed in large domains inside a non modulated matrix, in contrast with the modulations associated with the charge ordering of the Fe2+ and Fe3+ species, which are mostly short-range. The investigation of the nature and density of defects in the sample shows that they are nano-scaled, preserving the regularity of the layer stacking mode, and limited to the formation of one- or two-units large stacking faults, associated with gliding mechanisms. Based on these observations, an original description of the LuFe2O4 ferrite structure, through puckered [LuO4](infinity) sandwiching [Fe-2](infinity) layers, is proposed. Abstract: We study the ground and first excited states of the neutral and charged shallow donor system confined in a GaAs quantum well (QW) along one direction and by a parabolic potential in the plane perpendicular to the QW. The influence of an external perpendicular magnetic field and of the position of the donor on the energy of the states is studied. We investigate the dependence of the ground and excited states of the negatively charged donor on the confinement potential and external magnetic field. When the donor is displaced from the center of the QW the presence of the lateral confinement shifts the magnetic field induced angular momentum transitions and shifts the unbinding to higher magnetic field. Abstract: The influence of superficial defects on the vortex configurations of a thin superconducting disk is investigated within the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau formalism. The free energy, magnetization, vorticity, and the Cooper pair density are calculated for both metastable and stable vortex configurations and different number of defects on its surface in the presence of an external magnetic field applied perpendicular to the disk area. We show that the competition between the confinement geometry and the geometric position of the defects leads to non-conventional vortex configurations which are not compatible with the symmetry of the sample geometry. Abstract: Theranostic polymeric nanocarriers loaded with anticancer drug Taxol and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanocrystals have been developed for possible magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) use and cancer therapy. Multifunctional nanocarriers with a coreshell structure have been prepared by coating superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles with block copolymer of poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(propylene succinate) with variable molecular weights of the hydrophobic block poly(prolylene succinate). The multifunctional polymer nano-vehicles were prepared using a nanoprecipitation method. Scanning transmission electron microscopy revealed the encapsulation of magnetic nanoparticles inside the polymeric matrix. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy mapping allowed us to determine the presence of the different material ingredients in a quantitative way. The diameter of the nanoparticles is below 250 nm yielding satisfactory encapsulation efficiency. The nanoparticles exhibit a biphasic drug release pattern in vitro over 15 days depending on the molecular weight of the hydrophobic part of the polymer matrix. These new systems where anti-cancer therapeutics like Taxol and iron oxide nanoparticles (IOs) are co-encapsulated into new facile polymeric nanoparticles, could be addressed as potential multifunctional vehicles for simultaneous drug delivery and targeting imaging as well as real time monitoring of therapeutic effects.

Abstract: Highly ordered SBA-15-type ethane-bridged PMOs have been obtained by employing H3PO4 as acid to tune the pH in the presence of copolymer surfactant P123. The effects of the acidity and the addition of inorganic salt on the formation of the mesostructure are investigated. It is found that, compared with HCl, the polyprotic weak acid H3PO4 is preferable for the synthesis of highly ordered SBA-15-type ethane-bridged PMOs with larger pore size and surface areas under mild acidic conditions. Moreover, taking the advantages of the mild acidic condition, vanadium-containing SBA-15-type ethane-bridged PMOs were successfully prepared through a direct synthesis approach. The XRD, N2-sorption, UVVis and CW-EPR studies of the V-PMO show that part of the vanadium species are present in polymeric (VOV)n clusters, while part of the vanadium centers are well-dispersed and immobilized on the inner surface of the mesopores.

Abstract: A new sol-gel synthesis procedure is proposed for the preparation of MoVSbOx catalysts for the selective oxidation of isobutane. Physico-chemical characterization of the materials calcined at 400 degreesC, showed essentially amorphous catalysts, with long-range order. Increase of calcination temperature, however, resulted in the formation of small crystalline regions, confirmed through TEM. EPR measurements on the calcined samples pointed to the presence of isolated and magnetically interacting V(IV) species. The reported catalysts proved to be much more selective for partial oxidation compared to a literature reference catalyst. Furthermore, it is shown that this versatile synthesis recipe forms an excellent start for high-throughput and combinatorial studies. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Nanostripes are observed in melt-textured and single-crystalline samples of the ternary light rare earth (LRE)-compound (Nd0.33Eu0.33Gd0.33)Ba2Cu3Ox (NEG) by means of atomic force microscopy, scanning tunnelling microscopy at ambient conditions, combined with transmission electron microscopy and electron backscatter diffraction. This enables the observation of several important features: The nanostripes are formed by chains of nanoclusters, representing the LRE/Ba substitution. The dimensions of the nanostripes are similar for both types of NEG samples. The periodicity of the nanostripes is found to range between 40 and 60 nm; the shape of the nanoclusters is elliptic with a major axis length between 300 and 500 nm and a minor axis length of about 30150 nm. The stripes are filling effectively the space in between the twin boundaries. Concerning the flux pinning, the nanoclusters are the important pinning sites, not the nanostripes themselves.

Abstract: Despite significant progress in single walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) production by plasma enhanced chemical vapor deposition (PECVD), the growth mechanism in this method is not clearly understood. We employ reactive molecular dynamics simulations to investigate how plasma-based deposition allows growth at low temperature. We first investigate the SWCNT growth mechanism at low and high temperatures under conditions similar to thermal CVD and PECVD. We then show how ion bombardment during the nucleation stage increases the carbon solubility in the catalyst at low temperature. Finally, we demonstrate how moderate energy ions sputter amorphous carbon allowing for SWCNT growth at 500 K. (C) 2013 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: On the basis of a simplified Hamiltonian for transition metal impurities in diluted magnetic semiconductors (DMS), the nature of ferromagnetism in p-type III-V DMS are investigated. Ferromagnetism is governed by the Anderson-Hubbard parameter for 3d electrons of Mn2+ and their strong hybridization with the hole carriers in the semiconducting medium. The origin of ferromagnetism in these materials has similarity with the Zener mechanism. From the energetically preferable parallel orientation of Mn spins the Curie temperature is calculated for GaAs:Mn. (C) 2002 Published by Elsevier Science B.V.

Abstract: High-resolution electron microscopy is used to study the initial growth of different REBa2CU3O7-5 thin films. In DyBa2CU3O7-5 ultra-thin films, deposited on TiO2 terminated SrTiO3, two different types of interface arrangements occur: bulk-SrO-TiO2-BaO-CuO-BaO-CuO2-Dy-CuO2-BaO-bulk and bulk-SrO-TiO2-BaO-CuO2-Dy-CuO2-BaO-CuO-BaO-bulk. This variable growth sequence is the origin of the presence of antiphase boundaries. In Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-5 thin films, antiphase boundaries tend to annihilate by the insertion of extra Nd-layers. This annihilation is correlated with the flat morphology of the film and the absence of growth spirals at the surface of the Nd-rich films. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Using the two-component Ginzburg-Landau model, we investigate the effect of sample size and magnitude and homogeneity of external magnetic field on the stability of fractional vortex states in a mesoscopic two-band superconducting disk. We found that each fractional state has a preferable sample size, for which the range of applied field in which the state is stable is pronouncedly large. Vice versa, there exists an optimal magnitude of applied field for which a large range of possible sample radii will support the considered fractional state. Finally, we show that the stability of fractional states can be enhanced even further by magnetic nanostructuring of the sample, i.e. by suitably chosen geometrical parameters and magnetic moment of a ferromagnetic dot placed on top of the superconducting disk.
