“Size mismatch : a crucial factor for generating a spin-glass insulator in manganites”. Maignan A, Martin C, Van Tendeloo G, Hervieu M, Raveau B, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 60, 15214 (1999). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.60.15214
Abstract: Thr structural, electronic, and magnetic properties of the highly mismatched perovskite oxides, Th(0.35)A(0.65)MnO(3), where Ais for the alkaline earth divalent cations (Ca, Ba, Sr), which are all characterized by the same large tolerance factor (t=0.934), have been investigated by using electron microscopy, electrical resistivity, magnetic susceptibility, and magnetization. It is clearly established that a transition from ferromagnetic metallic towards spin-glass insulator samples is induced as the A-site cationic size mismatch is increased. Moreover, the magnetoresistance (MR) properties of these manganites are strongly reduced for the spin-glass insulators, demonstrating that the A-sire cationic disorder is detrimental for the colossal MR properties. Based on these results, a new electronic and magnetic diagram is established that shows that the A-site disorder, rather than the A-site average cationic size (or t) is the relevant factor for generating spin-glass insulating manganites. “Effect of cobalt content on the properties of quintuple perovskites Sm₂Ba₃Fe₅-xCoxO₁₅-δ”. Golovachev IB, Mychinko MY, Volkova NE, Gavrilova LY, Raveau B, Maignan A, Cherepanov VA, Journal Of Solid State Chemistry 301, 122324 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.JSSC.2021.122324
Abstract: Quintuple perovskites Sm2Ba3Fe5-xCoxO15-delta = 0.5, 1.0 and 1.5) have been prepared by glycerin-nitrate tech- nique in air. The phase purity was confirmed by XRD. Partial substitution of Co for Fe decreases the oxygen content and thus the mean oxidation state of 3d-metals. It also slightly decreases the thermal expansion coefficient of oxides. Positive value of the Seebeck coefficient confirmed p-type conductivity, though the thermopower decreases as the Co content increases. The temperature dependence of electrical conductivity reveals a maximum at 550-750 degrees C.

“Nanoscale ordering in oxygen deficient quintuple perovskite Sm2-\epsilonBa3+\epsilonFe5O15-\delta : implication for magnetism and oxygen stoichiometry”. Volkova NE, Lebedev OI, Gavrilova LY, Turner S, Gauquelin N, Seikh MM, Caignaert V, Cherepanov VA, Raveau B, Van Tendeloo G, Chemistry of materials 26, 6303 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1021/cm503276p
Abstract: The investigation of the system SmBaFe-O in air has allowed an oxygen deficient perovskite Sm2-epsilon Ba3+epsilon Fe5O15-delta (delta = 0.75, epsilon = 0.125) to be synthesized. In contrast to the XRPD pattern which gives a cubic symmetry (a(p) = 3.934 angstrom), the combined HREM/EELS study shows that this phase is nanoscale ordered with a quintuple tetragonal cell, a(p) X a(p) X 5(ap). The nanodomains exhibit a unique stacking sequence of the A-site cationic layers along the crystallographic c-axis, namely SmBaBa/SmBa/SmBaSm, and are chemically twinned in the three crystallographic directions. The nanoscale ordering of this perovskite explains its peculiar magnetic properties on the basis of antiferromagnetic interactions with spin blockade at the boundary between the nanodomains. The variation of electrical conductivity and oxygen content of this oxide versus temperature suggest potential SOFC applications. They may be related to the particular distribution of oxygen vacancies in the lattice and to the 3d(5)(L) under bar configuration of iron.

Abstract: A new superconducting mercury oxycarbonate, Pb0.7Hg0.3Sr4Cu2CO3O7, has been synthesized. This tetragonal phase (a = 3.824 angstrom, c= 16.468 angstrom) consists of an intergrowth of two nonsuperconducting compounds, Sr2CuO2CO3 and Pb0.7Hg0.3Sr2CuO5. It exhibits after optimization a critical temperature of 70 K, with a sharp transition and a superconducting volume fraction of 50%. Its behavior can be compared to that of thallium oxycarbonates previously isolated. This study is completed by a reinvestigation of the 1212 cuprate of the system Hg-Pb-Sr-Ca-Nd-Cu. A superconducting phase with the 1212 structure, similar to that previously obtained but with a significantly different composition, Pb0.7Hg0.3Sr2+xCa0.7Nd0.3-xCu2O7, has been obtained, with a T(c onset) of 100 K. The behavior of the latter is compared with other lead-based 1212 cuprates.

Abstract: The relationships between incommensurability, charge ordering and magnetotransport properties in Nd0.5Ca0.5Mn1-xCrxO3 manganites have been studied by electron diffraction and lattice imaging versus temperature with 0.02 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.07. All compositions show an incommensurate superstructure over the whole temperature domain, despite the fact that they are ferromagnetic and conductive below 140 K, The q-vector (1/2 – delta)a* decreases with increasing temperature for all compositions x. For a given temperature q also decreases with x. Lattice images obtained at low temperature give a clear view of the characteristics of the incommensurate structure. They also provide a better understanding of the charge ordering process. The low-temperature form of the Cr-doped manganites is not a perfectly doubled cell [[2a(p)root 2 x 2a(p) x a(p)root 2]], but defects inducing a tripled cell occur pseudo-periodically. Abstract: ''1201'' Tl-based substituted cuprates of the type (Tl1-xMx) Sr2CuO5 have been synthesized for M = Nb, Ta, or W. These materials do not superconduct due to a statistical distribution of some of the M for Cu. The remarkable feature of these materials is the ordering observed between Tl and M in the (Tl1-xMx-epsilon)O plane. The type of ordering depends on the composition and shows remarkable similarities with the ordering in Ni-Mo or other so-called 1 1/2 0 type fcc-based alloys or with the ordering in rocksalt oxides TiOx. The short-range order, for M = W, can be readily interpreted in terms of a mixing of nano-clusters with two different compositions. These observations of two-dimensional ordering confirm recent ideas about ordering in three-dimensional fcc-based alloys.

Abstract: Structure determination of the fully intercalated phase Li12Mo5O17 and of the deintercalated oxide Li5Mo5O17 has been carried out by electron microscopy and neutron powder diffraction. The reversible topotactic transformation between the ordered rock salt structure of the former and the ribbon structure of the latter (closely related to that of Li4Mo5O17) is explained on the following basis: both structures can be described as strips built up as an assembly of infinite ribbons of MoO6 octahedra that are five octahedra thick, and that differ by slight displacements of the octahedral ribbons. We show that the electrochemical behavior of the LixMo5O17 system is based on two sorts of Li+ sites; those that are located within the strips between the ribbons, and those that are located at the border of the strips. The high rate of Li intercalation in this oxide and its reversibility are discussed in terms of its peculiar structure.

“A new cuprate with mercury bilayers : the “2222&rdquo, oxide Hg2-xMxBa2Pr2Cu2O10-\delta (M= Cu,Pr)”. Huve M, Martin C, Maignan A, Michel C, Van Tendeloo G, Hervieu M, Raveau B, Journal of solid state chemistry 114, 230 (1995). http://doi.org/10.1006/jssc.1995.1033
Abstract: A ''2222'' cuprate with mercury bilayers (Hg1.5Cu0.2Pr0.3)Ba2Pr2Cu2O10-delta, has been synthesized for the first time. It crystallizes in the P4/nmm space group with a = 3.9072(1) Angstrom and c = 17.219(1) Angstrom. The powder XRD and HREM studies of this new cuprate show that its structure consists of an intergrowth of double pyramidal (oxygen-deficient perovskite) copper layers, with double fluorite-type layers and distorted triple rock salt layers (mercury bilayers). The structure of this phase can be deduced from that of the ''2212'' mercury cuprate (Hg1.5Cu0.2Pr0.3)Ba2PrCu2O8-delta by the introduction of one additional [PrO2]infinity fluorite layer. The regular stacking of the metallic layer and the uniform cationic distribution in the mercury bilayers are remarkable features of this cuprate. The stabilization of the mercury bilayers by praseodymium and the absence of superconductivity are discussed. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.
