Title Structure and energetics of hydrogen chemisorbed on a single graphene layer to produce graphane Type A1 Journal article
Year 2011 Publication Carbon Abbreviated Journal Carbon
Volume 49 Issue 10 Pages 3258-3266
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT); Integrated Molecular Plant Physiology Research (IMPRES)
Abstract Chemisorption of hydrogen on graphene is studied using atomistic simulations with the second generation of reactive empirical bond order Brenner inter-atomic potential. The lowest energy adsorption sites and the most important metastable sites are determined. The H concentration is varied from a single H atom, to clusters of H atoms up to full coverage. We found that when two or more H atoms are present, the most stable configurations of H chemisorption on a single graphene layer are ortho hydrogen pairs adsorbed on one side or on both sides of the graphene sheet. The latter has the highest hydrogen binding energy. The next stable configuration is the orthopara pair combination, and then para hydrogen pairs. The structural changes of graphene caused by chemisorbed hydrogen are discussed and are compared with existing experimental data and other theoretical calculations. The obtained results will be useful for nanoengineering of graphene by hydrogenation and for hydrogen storage.

Abstract The phase transition processes induced by ultrashort, 100 fs pulsed laser irradiation of Au, Cu, and Ni are studied by means of a combined atomistic-continuum approach. A moderately low absorbed laser fluence range, from 200 to 600 J/m2 is considered to study phase transitions by means of a local and a nonlocal order parameter. At low laser fluences, the occurrence of layer-by-layer evaporation has been observed, which suggests a direct solid to vapor transition. The calculated amount of molten material remains very limited under the conditions studied, especially for Ni. Therefore, our results show that a kinetic equation that describes a direct solid to vapor transition might be the best approach to model laser-induced phase transitions by continuum models. Furthermore, the results provide more insight into the applicability of analytical superheating theories that were implemented in continuum models and help the understanding of nonequilibrium phase transitions.

Abstract We theoretically investigate the electronic transport properties of two closely spaced L-shaped semiconductor quantum wires, for different configurations of the output channel widths as well as the distance between the wires. Within the effective-mass approximation, we solve the time-dependent Schrodinger equation using the split-operator technique that allows us to calculate the transmission probability, the total probability current, the conductance, and the wave function scattering between the energy subbands. We determine the maximum distance between the quantum wires below which a relevant non-zero transmission is still found. The transmission probability and the conductance show a strong dependence on the width of the output channel for small distances between the wires. (C) 2015 AIP Publishing LLC.

Abstract The energy spectrum and density of states of graphene bilayer superlattices (SLs) are evaluated. We take into account doping and/or gating of the layers as well as tunnel coupling between them. In addition, we evaluate the transmission through such SLs and through single or double barriers. The transmission exhibits a strong dependence on the direction of the incident wave vector.

Volume Issue Pages 35-46

Abstract We present a Ginzburg-Landau theory for a two-band superconductor with emphasis on MgB2. We propose experiments which lead to identification of the possible scenarios: whether both sigma- and pi-bands superconduct or sigma-alone. According to the second scenario a microscopic theory of superconducting MgB2 is proposed based on the strongly interacting or-electrons and non-correlated pi-electrons of boron ions. The kinematic and Coulomb interactions of sigma-electrons provide the superconducting state with an anisotropic gap of s(*)-wave symmetry. The critical temperature T-c has a non-monotonic dependence on the distance r between the centers of gravity of sigma- and pi-bands. The position of MgB2 on a bell-shaped curve T-c (r) is identified in the overdoped region. The derived superconducting density of electronic states is in agreement with available experimental and theoretical data. It is argued that the effects of pressure are crucial to identify the microscopic origin of superconductivity in MgB2. Possibilities for increase of T, are discussed.

Abstract We study the properties of a capacitive 13.56 MHz discharge with a mixture of Ar/C2H2 taking into account the plasmochemistry and growth of heavy hydrocarbons. A hybrid model was developed to combine the kinetic description for electron motion and the fluid approach for negative and positive ion transports and plasmochemical processes. A significant change in plasma parameters related to injection of 5.8% portion of acetylene in argon was observed and analyzed. We found that the electronegativity of the mixture is about 30%. The densities of negatively and positively charged heavy hydrocarbons are sufficiently large to be precursors for the formation of nanoparticles in the discharge volume.

Abstract We present a detailed theoretical study of terahertz (THz) optical absorption in bilayer graphene. Considering an air/graphene/dielectric-wafer system, we find that there is an absorption window in the range 3 similar to 30 THz. Such an absorption window is induced by different transition energies required for inter- and intra-band optical absorption in the presence of the Pauli blockade effect. As a result, the position and width of this THz absorption window depend sensitively on temperature and carrier density of the system. These results are pertinent to the applications of recently developed graphene systems as novel optoelectronic devices such as THz photo-detectors.

Abstract Electron continement and its effect on the superconducting-to-normal phase transition driven by a magentic field and/or a current is studied in nanowires. Our investigation is based on a self-consistent numerical solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. We find that in a parallel magneitc field and/or in the presence of a supercurrent the transition from the superconducting to the normal phase occurs as a cascade of discontinuous jumps in the superconducting order parameter for diameters D < 10 divided by 15 nm at T = 0. The critical magentic field exhibits quantum-size oscillations with pronounced resonant enhancements as a function of the wire radius.

Abstract Using relativistic density-functional calculations, we examine the magneto-crystalline anisotropy and exchange properties of transition-metal atoms adsorbed on 2D-GaAs. We show that single Mn and Mo atom (Co and Os) strongly bind on 2D-GaAs, and induce local out-of-plane (in-plane) magnetic anisotropy. When a pair of TM atoms is adsorbed on 2D-GaAs in a close range from each other, magnetisation properties change (become tunable) with respect to concentrations and ordering of the adatoms. In all cases, we reveal presence of strong Dzyaloshinskii–Moriya interaction. These results indicate novel pathways towards two-dimensional chiral magnetic materials by design, tailored for desired applications in magneto-electronics.

Volume 28 Issue 3 Pages 373-380
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract Few-electron systems confined in two-dimensional parabolic quantum dots at high magnetic fields are studied by the Hartree-Fock (HF) and exact diagoiialization methods. A generalized multicenter Gaussian basis is proposed in the HF method. A comparison of the HF and exact, results allows as to discuss the relevance of the symmetry of the charge density distribution for the accuracy of the HF method. It is shown that the energy estimates obtained with the broken-symmetry HF wave functions become exact in the infinite magnetic-field limit. In this limit the charge density of the broken-symmetry solution call be identified with the classical charge distribution.

Abstract We investigate the adsorption process of small molecules on graphene through first-principles calculations and show the presence of two main charge transfer mechanisms. Which mechanism is the dominant one depends on the magnetic properties of the adsorbing molecules. We explain these mechanisms through the density of states of the system and the molecular orbitals of the adsorbates, and demonstrate the possible difficulties in calculating the charge transfer from first principles between a graphene sheet and a molecule. Our results are in good agreement with experiment.

Abstract The properties of a clean superconductor with nanoscale dimensions are governed by quantum confinement of the electrons. This results in a spatially inhomogeneous superconducting condensate and in the formation of new Andreev-type quasiparticle states. These states are mainly located beyond regions where the superconducting condensate is enhanced. A numerical self-consistent solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a cylindrical metallic nanowire shows that these new Andreev-type states decrease the ratio of the energy gap to the critical temperature.

Title Angular confinement and direction-dependent transmission in graphene nanostructures with magnetic barriers Type A1 Journal article
Year 2009 Publication AIP conference proceedings Abbreviated Journal
Volume 1199 Issue Pages 363-364
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We evaluate the transmission through magnetic barriers in graphene-based nanostructures. Several particular cases are considered: a magnetic step, single and double barriers, delta -function barriers as well as barrier structures with inhomogeneous magnetic field profiles but with average magnetic field equal to zero. The transmission exhibits a strong dependence on the direction of the incident wave vector. In general the resonant structure of the transmission is significantly more pronounced for (Dirac) electrons with linear spectrum compared to that for electrons with a parabolic one.
