Abstract: Using an effective one-dimensional cluster expansion in combination with first-principles electronic structure calculations we have studied the energetics and electronic properties of Sb-Te layered systems. For a Te concentration between 0 and 60 at. % an almost continuous series of metastable structures is obtained consisting of consecutive Sb bilayers next to consecutive Sb2Te3 units, with the general formula (Sb-2)(n)(Sb2Te3)(m) (n, m = 1,2, ... ). Between 60 and 100 at.% no stable structures are found. We account explicitly for the weak van derWaals bonding between Sb bilayers and Sb2Te3 units by using a recently developed functional, which strongly improves the interlayer bonding distances. At T = 0 K, no evidence is found for the existence of two separate single-phase regions delta and gamma and a two-phase region delta + gamma. Metastable compounds with a Te concentration between 0 and 40 at. % are semimetallic, whereas compounds with a Te concentration between 50 and 60 at. % are semiconducting. Compounds with an odd number of Sb layers are metallic and have a much higher formation energy than those with an even number of consecutive Sb layers, thereby favoring the formation of Sb bilayers.

Abstract: In the present work, reactive magnetron sputtering in DC mode was used to grow complex oxide thin films, starting from two separate pure metal targets. A series of coatings was produced with a stoichiometry of the film ranging from MgO, over MgxAlyOz to Al2O3. The surface energy, crystallinity, hardness, refractive index, and surface roughness were investigated. A relationship between all properties studied and the Mg content of the samples was found. A critical compositional region for the Mg-Al-O system where all properties exhibit a change was noticed.

Abstract: Using a molecular dynamics model the crystallinity of MgxAlyOz thin films with a variation in the stoichiometry of the thin film is studied at operating conditions similar to the experimental operating conditions of a dual magnetron sputter deposition system. The films are deposited on a crystalline or amorphous substrate. The Mg metal content in the film ranged from 100% (i.e. MgO film) to 0% (i.e. Al2O3 film). The radial distribution function and density of the films are calculated. The results are compared with x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy analyses of experimentally deposited thin films by the dual magnetron reactive sputtering process. Both simulation and experimental results show that the structure of the MgAlO film varies from crystalline to amorphous when the Mg concentration decreases. It seems that the crystalline MgAlO films have a MgO structure with Al atoms in between.

Abstract: Stained glass windows incorporating dark blue and purple enamel paint layers are in some cases subject to severe degradation while others from the same period survived the ravages of time. A series of dark blue, greenblue and purple enamel glass paints from the same region (Northwestern Europe) and from the same period (16early 20th centuries) has been studied by means of a combination of microscopic X-ray fluorescence analysis, electron probe micro analysis and transmission electron microscopy with the aim of better understanding the causes of the degradation. The chemical composition of the enamels diverges from the average chemical composition of window glass. Some of the compositions appear to be unstable, for example those with a high concentration of K2O and a low content of CaO and PbO. In other cases, the deterioration of the paint layers was caused by the less than optimal vitrification of the enamel during the firing process. Recipes and chemical compositions indicate that glassmakers of the 1617th century had full control over the color of the enamel glass paints they made. They mainly used three types of coloring agents, based on Co (dark blue), Mn (purple) and Cu (light-blue or greenblue) as coloring elements. Bluepurple enamel paints were obtained by mixing two different coloring agents. The coloring agent for redpurple enamel, introduced during the 19th century, was colloidal gold embedded in grains of lead glass.

Abstract: Transmission electron microscopy is used to evaluate different deposition techniques, which optimize the microstructure and physical properties of superconducting thin films. High-resolution electron microscopy proves that the use of an YBa2Cu2Ox buffer layer can avoid a variable interface configuration in YBa2Cu3O7-delta thin films grown on SrTiO3. The growth can also be controlled at an atomic level by, using sub-unit cell layer epitaxy, which results in films with high quality and few structural defects. Epitaxial strain in Sr0.85La0.15CuO2 infinite layer thin films influences the critical temperature of these films, as well as the microstructure. Compressive stress is released by a modulated or a twinned microstructure, which eliminates superconductivity. On the other hand, also tensile strain seems to lower the critical temperature of the infinite layer.

Abstract: Interfacing oxides with silicon is a long-standing problem related to the integration of multifunctional oxides with semiconductor devices and the replacement of SiO2 with high-k gate oxides. In our study, pulsed laser deposition was used to prepare a SrTiO3 (STO) thin film on a H-terminated Si substrate. The main purpose of our work was to verify the ability of H-termination against the oxidation of Si during the PLD process and to analyze the resulting interfaces. In the first part of the study, the STO was deposited directly on the Si, leading to the formation of a preferentially textured STO film with a (100) orientation. In the second part, SrO was used as a buffer layer, which enabled the partial epitaxial growth of STO with STO(110)parallel to Si(100) and STO[001]parallel to Si[001]. The change in the growth direction induced by the application of a SrO buffer was governed by the formation of a SrO(111) intermediate layer and subsequently by the minimization of the lattice misfit between the STO and the SrO. Under the investigated conditions, approximately 10 nm thick interfacial layers formed between the STO and the Si due to reactions between the deposited material and the underlying H-terminated Si. In the case of direct STO deposition, SiOx formed at the interface with the silicon, while in the case when SrO was used as a buffer, strontium silicate grew directly on the silicon, which improves the growth quality of the uppermost STO.

Abstract: Nanocrystalline palladium thin films deposited by electron-beam evaporation and deformed by on-chip tensile testing reveal a surprisingly large strain hardening capacity when considering the small similar to 25 nm grain size. The as-grown films contain several coherent single and multifold twin boundaries. The coherency of the twin boundaries considerably decreases with deformation due to dislocation/twin boundary interactions. These reactions are described based on a detailed analysis of the number and the type of dislocations located at the twin boundaries using high-resolution TEM, including aberration corrected microscopy. Sessile Frank dislocations were observed at the twin/matrix interfaces, explaining the loss of the TB coherency due to the Burgers vector pointing out of the twinning plane. Grain boundary mediated processes were excluded as a mechanism dominating the plastic deformation based on the investigation of the grain size distribution as well as the crystallographic texture using Automated Crystallographic Orientation Indexation TEM. Other factors influencing the plastic deformation such as impurities and the presence of a native passivation oxide layer at the surface of the films were investigated using analytical TEM. The twin boundaries observed in the present work partly explain the high strain hardening capacity by providing both increasing resistance to dislocation motion with deformation and a source for dislocation multiplication. Abstract: Nanocrystalline Pd films were produced by electron-beam evaporation and sputter deposition. The electron-beam-evaporated films reveal randomly oriented nanograins with a relatively high density of growth twins, unexpected in view of the high stacking fault energy of Pd. In contrast, sputter-deposited films show a clear 〈1 1 1〉 crystallographic textured nanostructure without twins. These results provide insightful information to guide the generation of microstructures with enhanced strength/ductility balance in high stacking fault energy nanocrystalline metallic thin films.

Abstract: The high-rate sensitivity of nanostructured metallic materials demonstrated in the recent literature is related to the predominance of thermally activated deformation mechanisms favoured by a large density of internal interfaces. Here we report time-resolved high-resolution electron transmission microscopy creep tests on thin nanograined films using on-chip nanomechanical testing. Tests are performed on ​palladium, which exhibited unexpectedly large creep rates at room temperature. Despite the small 30-nm grain size, relaxation is found to be mediated by dislocation mechanisms. The dislocations interact with the growth nanotwins present in the grains, leading to a loss of coherency of twin boundaries. The density of stored dislocations first increases with applied deformation, and then decreases with time to drive additional deformation while no grain boundary mechanism is observed. This fast relaxation constitutes a key issue in the development of various micro- and nanotechnologies such as ​palladium membranes for hydrogen applications.

Abstract: Nanocrystalline powders of undoped and lanthanide (Pr3+, Tm3+)- doped gadolinium gallium garnet, Gd3Ga5O12 (GGG), were prepared by propellant synthesis and studied by x-ray powder diffraction (XRD), electron diffraction (ED), high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM) and luminescence spectroscopy. The x-ray diffraction patterns of the GGG samples were analysed using the Rietveld method. The Rietveld refinement reveals the existence of two garnet-type phases: both are cubic (space group Ia $(3) over bar $d) with a slightly different lattice parameter and probably a slightly different composition. Electron diffraction and electron microscopy measurements confirm the x-ray diffraction results. EDX measurements for lanthanide-doped samples show that stable solid solutions with composition Gd(3-x)Ln(x)Ga(5)O(12), x approximate to 0.3 ( Ln = Pr; Tm) have been obtained. The luminescence properties of the Tm3+ -doped nanocrystalline GGG samples were measured and analysed.

Abstract: Expanded graphite decorated with nickel oxide particles (EGNiO) has been synthesized through electrochemical oxidation of natural graphite in an aqueous nickel nitrate solution followed by a heat treatment. EGNiO was used to prepare nickel/carbon composites using two techniques: (a) hydrogen reduction of nickel oxide particles loaded on the expanded graphite surface and (b) pyrolysis of coal tar pitch-impregnated EGNiO blocks. The EGNiO as well as the nickel/carbon composites have been characterized by X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and selected area electron diffraction.

Abstract: Exfoliated graphite/coke composites modified by ZrO2 nanoparticles were produced using two different techniques and characterized by means of X-ray diffraction, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. In the first, low-density exfoliated graphite/coke blocks were dipped repeatedly and alternately in ZrO(NO3)2 and NH4OH solutions and subsequently heat treated at 1200°C in nitrogen to deposit thin layers of ZrO2 nanoparticles on the free surfaces of the carbon matrix. In the second, a mixture of expandable graphite, phenol-formaldehyde resin powder, and ZrOC2O4-modified fibrous cellulose in a sealed container was submitted to thermal shock at 900 °C followed by heat treatment at 1 200 °C in nitrogen to obtain the modified composites. The ZrO2 nanoparticles formed in the second technique were incorporated into the composites in three length scales: 6-30 nm-isolated nanoparticles and small blobs, 200-1000 nm-lengthy dendrite-like structures, and thin layer adhering to the surface of the 1-40 μm long cellulose carbon fibers.

Abstract: The characterization of biological and inorganic materials by determining their three-dimensional structure in conditions closer to their native state is a major challenge of technological research. Environmental scanning electron microscopy (ESEM) provides access to the observation of hydrated samples in water environments. Here, we present a specific device for ESEM in the scanning transmission electron microscopy mode, allowing the acquisition of tilt-series suitable for tomographic reconstructions. The resolution which can be obtained with this device is first determined. Then, we demonstrate the feasibility of tomography on wet materials. The example studied here is hydrophilic mesoporous silica (MCM-41). Finally, the minimum thickness of water which can be detected is calculated from Monte Carlo simulations and compared with the resolution expected in the tomograms.
