Abstract: Silicon dominates the electronics industry, but its poor optical properties mean that III-V compound semiconductors are preferred for photonics applications. Photoluminescence at visible wavelengths was observed from porous Si at room temperature in 1990, but the origin of these photons (do they arise from highly localized defect states or quantum confinement effects?) has been the subject of intense debate ever since. Attention has subsequently shifted from porous Si to Si nanocrystals, but the same fundamental question about the origin of the photoluminescence has remained. Here we show, based on measurements in high magnetic fields, that defects are the dominant source of light from Si nanocrystals. Moreover, we show that it is possible to control the origin of the photoluminescence in a single sample: passivation with hydrogen removes the defects, resulting in photoluminescence from quantum-confined states, but subsequent ultraviolet illumination reintroduces the defects, making them the origin of the light again.

Abstract: The morphological evolution in La(0.5)Ca(0.5)MnO(3)/SrTiO(3)(100) ultrathin films has been revealed by atomic force microscopy. It was found that ordered linear defects, which are in 1-2 unit cells high and oriented along the cubic [110] and [100] directions, first appear on the smooth surface of films with a thickness of 10 nm. As the epitaxial growth proceeds, these lines on surface develop into a crosshatch pattern for films with a thickness of 25 nm. Using the results of transmission electron microscopy and electrical measurements, we discuss the interplay between the surface pattern formation, the internal dislocation structure, and the variations in the electrical properties.

Abstract: Electron energy loss spectroscopy (EELS) is an ideal tool to obtain chemical information from nanoscale volumes. Quantification of the experimental spectra however has prevented for a long time access to the available information in a reliable and reproducible way. We present recent advances in model-based quantification of EELS spectra and show that we obtain the best possible precision for a given dataset, as well as remarkably good accuracies when applied to three different materials. The results are shown to be far superior over conventional quantification techniques and could hold a promise for standardless quantification of EELS spectra.

Abstract: We illustrate the potential of advanced transmission electron microscopy for the characterization of a new class of soft porous materials: metal@Zn4O(bdc)3 (metal@MOF-5; bdc = 1,4-benzenedicarboxylate). By combining several electron microscopy techniques (transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), electron diffraction (ED), high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM), and electron tomography) and by carefully reducing the electron dose to avoid beam damage, it is possible to simultaneously characterize the MOF-5 framework material and the loaded metal nanoparticles. We also demonstrate that electron tomography can be used to accurately determine the position and distribution of the particles within the MOF-5 framework. To demonstrate the implementation of these microscopy techniques and what kind of results can be expected, measurements on gas-phase-loaded metal−organic framework materials Ru@MOF-5 and Pd@MOF-5 are presented.

“Gas-phase loading of [Zn4O(btb)2] (MOF-177) with organometallic CVD-precursors: inclusion compounds of the type [LnM]a@MOF-177 and the formation of Cu and Pd nanoparticles inside MOF-177”. Abstract: The highly porous and desolvated (activated) coordination polymer [Zn4O(btb)2] (btb = benzene-1,3,5-tribenzoate; MOF-177) was loaded with the organometallic compounds [Cp2Fe], [Cp*2Zn], [Cu(OCHMeCH2NMe2)2], [CpCuL] (L = PMe3, CNtBu) and [CpPd(3-C3H5)] via solvent-free adsorption from the gas-phase. The inclusion compounds of the type [LnM]a@MOF-177, where [LnM] indicates the respective compound and the parameter a denotes the number of molecules per formula unit of the MOF-177, were characterised by elemental analysis, FT-IR, solid-state NMR spectroscopy and by powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD). Remarkably high effective loadings of up to 11 molecules [Cp2Fe] and 10 molecules [CpPd(3-C3H5)] per cavity were determined. The analytical data prove that the host lattice and the guest molecules interact only by weak van-der-Waals forces without any significant change of the framework or the chemical nature of the included molecules. Cu nanoparticles showing the typical surface plasmon resonance at 580 nm and Pd nanoparticles of about 2.6 nm in size were formed inside the cavities of MOF-177 by the thermally activated hydrogenolysis of the inclusion compounds [CpCuCNtBu]2@MOF-177 and by photolysis of [CpPd(3-C3H5)]10@MOF-177 in an inert atmosphere (Ar). PXRD, FT-IR and NMR studies revealed that the MOF-177 matrix remained unchanged during the decomposition process of the precursors. N2 adsorption studies of the obtained materials Cu@MOF-177 (e.g. 10.6 wt.% Cu, 2309 m2 g-1) and Pd@MOF-177 (e.g. 32.5 wt.%, 1063 m2 g-1) reveal high remaining specific surface areas (Langmuir model).

Abstract: Two-ordered perovskites, Bi1/3Sr2/3FeO2.67 and Bi1/2Ca1/2FeO2.75, have been stabilized and characterized by transmission electron microscopy, Mössbauer spectroscopy and X-ray powder diffraction techniques. They both exhibit orthorhombic superstructures, one with a≈b≈2ap and c≈3ap (S.G.: Pb2n or Pbmn) for the Sr-based compound and one with a≈b≈2ap and c≈8ap (S.G.: B222, Bmm2, B2mm or Bmmm) for the Ca-based one. The high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) images evidence the existence of one deficient [FeOx]∞ layer, suggesting that Bi1/3Sr2/3FeO2.67 and Bi1/2Ca1/2FeO2.75 behave differently compared to their Ln-based homolog. The HAADF-STEM images allow to propose a model of cation ordering on the A sites of the perovskite. The Mössbauer analyses confirm the trivalent state of iron and its complex environment with three types of coordination. Both compounds exhibit a high value of resistivity and the inverse molar susceptibility versus temperature curves evidence a magnetic transition at about 730 K for the Bi1/3Sr2/3FeO2.67 and a smooth reversible transition between 590 and 650 K for Bi1/2Ca1/2FeO2.75.

Abstract: We present results on model based quantification of electron energy loss spectra (EELS), focusing on the factors that influence accuracy and precision in determining chemical concentrations. Several sources of systematical errors are investigated. The spectrometer entrance aperture determines the collection angle, and the effects of its position with respect to the transmitted beam are investigated, taking into account the diffraction by the crystal structure. The effect of the orientation of the sample is tested experimentally and theoretically on SrTiO3, and finally, a simulated experiment on c-BN at different thicknesses confirms the superior results of the model based method with respect to the conventional method. A test on a set of experimental reference compounds is presented, showing that remarkably good accuracy can be obtained. Recommendations are given to achieve high accuracy and precision in practice. Abstract: Hysteretic resistance switching is observed in epitaxial Fe/Cr/MgO/Fe magnetic tunnel junctions under bias voltage cycling between negative and positive values of about 1 V. The junctions switch back and forth between high- and low-resistance states, both of which depend on the device bias history. A linear dependence is found between the magnitude of the tunnel magnetoresistance and the crafted resistance of the junctions. To explain these results, a model is proposed that considers electron transport both by elastic tunneling and by defect-assisted transmission. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: A data-acquisition and data-processing method is proposed that aims at minimizing the effect of retardation on the Kramers-Kronig analysis of valence electron energy-loss spectra. This method is applied to diamond, which, due to its high dielectric constant, is a material that shows strong retardation effects and thus is a challenging material to be studied by valence electron energy-loss spectroscopy. The results obtained show a significant improvement but still show small discrepancies with respect to optical data, which are most likely due to the residual retardation contributions and the fact that nonzero momentum transfers are measured.

Abstract: We study the effects of the rippling of a graphene sheet on quasiparticle dispersion. This is achieved using a generalization to the honeycomb lattice of the momentum average approximation, which is accurate for all coupling strengths and at all energies. We show that even though the position of the Dirac points may move and the Fermi speed can be renormalized significantly, quasiparticles with very long lifetimes survive near the Dirac points even for very strong couplings.

Abstract: When a tunneling barrier between two superconductors is formed by a normal material that would be a superconductor in the absence of phase fluctuations, the resulting Josephson effect can undergo an enormous enhancement. We establish this novel proximity effect by a general argument as well as a numerical simulation and argue that it may underlie recent experimental observations of the giant proximity effect between two cuprate superconductors separated by a barrier made of the same material rendered normal by severe underdoping.

Abstract: Insulating and metallic stripes above and below the Curie temperature, T-C, respectively, were observed by a high-resolution scanning tunneling microscopy (STM) and/or spectroscopy (STS) in A-site ordered and macroscopically strain free epitaxial La0.75Ca0.25MnO3 film grown on MgO substrate. The “insulating” stripes were found to be incommensurable to the lattice and aligned along (110) direction. Metallic stripes were commensurable with periodicity 2a(p)similar to 0.8 nm and aligned parallel to the crystallographic a/b-axis. Formation of these stripes involves competing charge, orbital, and lattice orders and is an outcome of an overlapping of electron wave functions mediated by the local lattice-strain distribution, existed even in A-site ordered film due to the difference in cation radii of La and Ca. Abstract: The properties of a clean superconductor with nanoscale dimensions are governed by quantum confinement of the electrons. This results in a spatially inhomogeneous superconducting condensate and in the formation of new Andreev-type quasiparticle states. These states are mainly located beyond regions where the superconducting condensate is enhanced. A numerical self-consistent solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for a cylindrical metallic nanowire shows that these new Andreev-type states decrease the ratio of the energy gap to the critical temperature.

Abstract: The effect of gas heating in laboratory sputter magnetrons is investigated by means of numerical modeling. The model is two-dimensional in the coordinate space and three-dimensional in the velocity space based on the particle-in-cellMonte Carlo collisions technique. It is expanded in a way that allows the inclusion of the neutral plasma particles (fast gas atoms and sputtered atoms), which makes it possible to calculate the gas temperature and its influence on the discharge behavior in a completely self-consistent way. The results of the model are compared to experimental measurements and to other existing simulation results. The results show that gas heating is pressure dependent (rising with the increase in the gas pressure) and should be taken into consideration at pressures above 10 mTorr.

Abstract: Computer simulations have been performed to describe the effect of small admixtures of hydrogen to an argon glow discharge in the Grimm-type configuration. The two-dimensional density profiles of the various plasma species (i.e., electrons, Ar+, ArH+, H+, H2+ and H3+ ions, H atoms and H2 molecules, Ar metastable atoms and sputtered Cu atoms) are presented for 1% H2 added to the argon glow discharge, and the effect of different H2 additions (varying between 0.1 and 10%) on the species densities, the hydrogen dissociation degree, and the sputtering process, are investigated. Finally, the relative contributions of various production and loss processes for the different plasma species are calculated.

Abstract: The persistent current in two vertically coupled quantum rings containing few electrons is studied. We find that the Coulomb interaction between the rings in the absence of tunneling affects the persistent current in each ring and the ground-state configurations. Quantum tunneling between the rings alters significantly the ground state and the persistent current in the system.
