Abstract Molecular dynamics simulations are performed on capped and uncapped PbSe nanocrystals, employing newly developed classical interaction potentials. Here, we show that two uncapped nanocrystals fuse efficiently via direct surface attachment, even if they are initially misaligned. In sharp contrast to the general belief, interparticle dipole interactions do not play a significant role in this oriented attachment process. Furthermore, it is shown that presumably polar, capped PbSe{111} facets are never fully Pb- or Se-terminated.

Abstract Exciton states in self-assembled InP/In0.49Ga0.51P quantum dots subject to magnetic fields up to 50T are calculated. Strain and band mixing are explicitly taken into account in the single-particle models of the electronic structure, while an exact diagonalization approach is adopted to compute the exciton states. Reasonably good agreement with magneto-photoluminescence measurements on InP self-assembled quantum dots is found. As a result of the polarization and angular momentum sensitive selection rules, the exciton ground state is dark. For in-plane polarized light, the magnetic field barely affects the exciton spatial localization, and consequently the exciton oscillator strength for recombination increases only slightly with increasing field. For z polarized light, a sharp increase of the oscillator strength beyond 30 T is found which is attributed to the enhanced s character of the relevant portion of the exciton wave function. Abstract An experimental and theoretical investigation was made of flux jumps and irreversible magnetization curves of mesoscopic Al superconducting rings. In the small magnetic-field region the change of vorticity with magnetic field can be larger than unity. This behavior is connected with the existence of several metastable states of different vorticities. The intentional introduction of a defect in the ring has a large effect on the size of the flux jumps. Calculations based on the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau model allows us to explain the experimental results semiquantitatively.

Abstract New polymorphs of NaMnO2 have been observed using transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. Coherent twin planes confined to the (NaMnO2) layers, parallel to the (10 (1) over bar) crystallographic planes of the monoclinic layered rock-salt-type alpha-NaMnO2 (O3) structure, form quasi-periodic modulated sequences, with the known alpha-and beta-NaMnO2 polymorphs as the two limiting cases. The energy difference between the polymorphic forms, estimated using a DFT-based structure relaxation, is on the scale of the typical thermal energies that results in a high degree of stacking disorder in these compounds. The results unveil the remarkable effect of the twin planes on both the magnetic and electrochemical properties. The polymorphism drives the magnetic ground state from a quasi-1D spin system for the geometrically frustrated alpha-polymorph through a two-leg spin ladder for the intermediate stacking sequence toward a quasi-2D magnet for the beta-polymorph. A substantial increase of the equilibrium potential for Na deintercalation upon increasing the concentration of the twin planes is calculated, providing a possibility to tune the electrochemical potential of the layered rock-salt ABO(2) cathodes by engineering the materials with a controlled concentration of twins.

Abstract Multiply connected mesoscopic: superconductors are considered within the framework of the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. The two coupled nonlinear equations are solved numerically and we investigated the properties of a superconducting ring, two concentric rings, and an asymmetric ring. We find that (i) for a mesoscopic superconducting ring the flux through the hole is not quantized, (ii) two concentric mesoscopic superconducting rings are magnetically coupled and the interaction energy increases with increasing sample thickness, and (iii) in asymmetric rings, a stationary phase slip state is predicted.

Abstract We report on a molecular dynamics study of small classical two-dimensional clusters with ringlike configurations. We focus on the particles motion at low temperatures before the radial and angular melting sets in. It is shown that in magic number configurations a local radial melting of subshells occur, which is related to the intershell rotation.

Abstract The electron transport properties in delta-doped semiconductor systems-are studied. The subband electronic structure of the delta-doped system is obtained by solving the coupled Schrodinger and Poisson equations. The screening of the quasi-two-dimensional electron gas is taken into account for the ionized impurity scattering through the matrix dielectric function within the random-phase approximation. The quantum and transport mobilities are calculated numerically as a function of the total electron density and the width of the doped layer at zero temperature. The intersubband scattering and the effect of empty subbands above the Fermi level on the electron mobilities are investigated. The calculated mobilities are in reasonable agreement with the available experimental results.

Abstract The atomic configurations at macrotwin interfaces between microtwinned martensite plates in Ni65Al35 material are investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The observed structures are interpreted in view of possible formation mechanisms for these interfaces. A distinction is made between cases in which the microtwins, originating from mutually perpendicular {110} austenite planes, enclose a final angle larger or smaller than 90degrees. Two different configurations, a crossing and a step type are described. Depending on the actual case, tapering, bending and tip splitting of the smaller microtwinvariants are observed. The most reproducible deformations occur in a region of approximately 5-10 nm width around the interface while a variety of structural defects are observed further away from the interface. These structures and deformations are interpreted in terms of the coalescence of two separately nucleated microtwinned martensite plates and the need to accommodate remaining stresses. Abstract Synergistic compositions of detonation nanodiamond (DND) particles with polytetrafluoroethylene and molybdenum dialkyldithiophosphate were used in ring-on-ring, four-ball, and block-on-ring tests as an additive to polyalphaolefins and engine oils. Modest to significant reductions in the friction coefficients, wear, or both were observed. In the wear scars produced in the block-on-ring tests, the friction surfaces were characterized by scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDX), and profilometry. Significant polishing effects of the friction surfaces in lubricants containing DND were revealed in SEM observations and roughness measurements. The roughness of the scar surfaces produced in the presence of DND additives was about 35% lower than the roughness of the scars observed in pure oil experiments.

Title Nanostructures in LuFe2O4+\delta Type A1 Journal article

Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract A LuFe2O4+delta sample, previously characterized by X-ray synchrotron and neutron diffraction, has been studied by electron microscopy techniques, in order to get a precise description of its micro- and nanostructures at room temperature. The X-ray synchrotron data vs. temperature show that the monoclinic distortion is associated with the charge ordering; this distortion results in elongated twinning domains, which enhance the complexity of the microstructural state at room temperature. The structural modulation associated with oxygen excess is observed in large domains inside a non modulated matrix, in contrast with the modulations associated with the charge ordering of the Fe2+ and Fe3+ species, which are mostly short-range. The investigation of the nature and density of defects in the sample shows that they are nano-scaled, preserving the regularity of the layer stacking mode, and limited to the formation of one- or two-units large stacking faults, associated with gliding mechanisms. Based on these observations, an original description of the LuFe2O4 ferrite structure, through puckered [LuO4](infinity) sandwiching [Fe-2](infinity) layers, is proposed. Abstract We present an exact diagonalization study of negatively charged excitonic trions in two vertically coupled parabolic quantum dots. The electrons and the hole are confined to different dots. We obtain the energy spectra as a function of inter-dot separation and external magnetic field strength and identify different ground-state angular momentum transitions which are accompanied by abrupt charge redistributions in the dots. Abstract An array of quantum rings with local (ring by ring) modulation of the spin orbit interaction (SOI) can lead to novel effects in spin state transformation of electrons. It is shown that already small (3 x 3, 5 x 5) networks are remarkably versatile from this point of view: Working in a given network geometry, the input current can be directed to any of the output ports, simply by changing the SOI strengths by external gate voltages. Additionally, the same network with different SOI strengths can be completely analogous to the Stern-Gerlach device, exhibiting spatial-spin entanglement.

Title Neutral and charged donor in a 3D quantum dot Type A1 Journal article
Year 2004 Publication Physica. E: Low-dimensional systems and nanostructures Abbreviated Journal Physica E
Volume 22 Issue 1-3 Pages 550-553
Keywords A1 Journal article; Condensed Matter Theory (CMT)
Abstract We study the ground and first excited states of the neutral and charged shallow donor system confined in a GaAs quantum well (QW) along one direction and by a parabolic potential in the plane perpendicular to the QW. The influence of an external perpendicular magnetic field and of the position of the donor on the energy of the states is studied. We investigate the dependence of the ground and excited states of the negatively charged donor on the confinement potential and external magnetic field. When the donor is displaced from the center of the QW the presence of the lateral confinement shifts the magnetic field induced angular momentum transitions and shifts the unbinding to higher magnetic field. Abstract The effect of a metallic gate on the bound states of a shallow donor located near the gate is studied. We calculate the energy spectrum as a function of the distance between the metallic gate and the donor and find an anti-crossing behavior in the energy levels for certain distances. We show how a transverse electric field can tune the average position of the electron with respect to the metallic gate and the impurity.
