Title Spatial separation of covalent, ionic, and metallic interactions in Mg11Rh18B8 and Mg3Rh5B3 Type A1 Journal article
Year 2013 Publication Chemistry: a European journal Abbreviated Journal Chem-Eur J
  Volume 19 Issue 52 Pages 17860-17870
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The crystal structures of Mg11Rh18B8 and Mg3Rh5B3 have been investigated by using single-crystal X-ray diffraction. Mg11Rh18B8: space group P4/mbm; a=17.9949(7), c=2.9271(1)angstrom; Z=2. Mg3Rh5B3: space group Pmma; a=8.450(2), b=2.8644(6), c=11.602(2)angstrom; Z=2. Both crystal structures are characterized by trigonal prismatic coordination of the boron atoms by rhodium atoms. The [BRh6] trigonal prisms form arrangements with different connectivity patterns. Analysis of the chemical bonding by means of the electron-localizability/electron-density approach reveals covalent BRh interactions in these arrangements and the formation of BRh polyanions. The magnesium atoms that are located inside the polyanions interact ionically with their environment, whereas, in the structure parts, which are mainly formed by Mg and Rh atoms, multicenter (metallic) interactions are observed. Diamagnetic behavior and metallic electron transport of the Mg11Rh18B8 and Mg3Rh5B3 phases are in agreement with the bonding picture and the band structure.

Title Sr21Bi8Cu2(CO3)(2)O-41, a Bi5+ Oxycarbonate with an Original 10L Structure Type A1 Journal article
Year 2014 Publication Inorganic chemistry Abbreviated Journal Inorg Chem
  Volume 53 Issue 19 Pages 10266-10275
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The layered structure of Sr21Bi8Cu2(CO3)(2)O-41 (Z = 2) was determined by transmission electron microscopy, infrared spectroscopy, and powder X-ray diffraction refinement in space group P6(3)/mcm (No. 194), with a = 10.0966(3)angstrom and c = 26.3762(5)angstrom. This original 10L-type structure is built from two structural blocks, namely, [Sr15Bi6Cu2(CO3)O-29] and [Sr6Bi2(CO3)O-12]. The Bi5+ cations form [Bi2O10] dimers, whereas the Cu2+ and C atoms occupy infinite tunnels running along (c) over right arrow. The nature of the different blocks and layers is discussed with regard to the existing hexagonal layered compounds. Sr21Bi8Cu2(CO3)(2)O-41 is insulating and paramagnetic.

Title Stability of Ge12C48 and Ge20C40 heterofullerenes : a first principles molecular dynamics study Type A1 Journal article
Year 2013 Publication Chemical physics letters Abbreviated Journal Chem Phys Lett
  Volume 556 Issue Pages 163-167
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract By using first-principles molecular dynamics, we address the issue of structural stability for the C-60 Ge-m(m) family of doped heterofullerenes through a set of calculations targeting C48Ge12 and C40Ge20. Three kinds of theoretical tools are employed: (a) static structural optimization, (b) a bonding analysis based on localized orbitals (Wannier wavefunctions and centers) and (c) first-principles molecular dynamics at finite temperature. This latter tool allows concluding that the segregated form of C40Ge20 is less stable than its Si-based counterpart. However, the non-segregated forms of C40Ge20 and C40Si20 have comparable stabilities at finite temperatures. (C) 2012 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Title Stable polyoxometalate insertion within the mesoporous metal organic framework MIL-100(Fe) Type A1 Journal article
Year 2011 Publication Journal of materials chemistry Abbreviated Journal J Mater Chem
  Volume 21 Issue 4 Pages 1226-1233
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract Successful encapsulation of polyoxometalate (POM) within the framework of a mesoporous iron trimesate MIL-100(Fe) sample has been achieved by direct hydrothermal synthesis in the absence of fluorine. XRPD, 31P MAS NMR, IR, EELS, TEM and 57Fe Mössbauer spectrometry corroborate the insertion of POM within the cavities of the MOF. The experimental Mo/Fe ratio is 0.95, in agreement with the maximum theoretical amount of POM loaded within the pores of MIL-100(Fe), based on steric hindrance considerations. The POM-MIL-100(Fe) sample exhibits a pore volume of 0.373 cm3 g−1 and a BET surface area close to 1000 m2 g−1, indicating that small gas molecules can easily diffuse inside the cavities despite the presence of heavy phosphomolybdates. These latter contribute to the decrease in the overall surface area, due to the increase in molar weight, by 65%. Moreover, the resulting Keggin containing MIL-100(Fe) solid is stable in aqueous solution with no POM leaching even after more than 2 months. In addition, no exchange of the Keggin anions by tetrabutylammonium perchlorate in organic media has been observed.

Title Structural and magnetotransport transitions in the electron-doped Pr1-xSrxMnO3(0.85\leq x\leq1) manganites Type A1 Journal article
Year 2000 Publication Chemistry and materials Abbreviated Journal Chem Mater
  Volume 12 Issue 5 Pages 1456-1462
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The exploration of the Mn4+-rich side of the Pr1-xSrxMnO3 system has allowed the extension of the domain of the cubic perovskite, by using a two-step process, combining synthesis under Ar flow at high temperature and O-2 pressure annealing at lower temperature. We show that these Pr-doped cubic perovskites exhibit a coupled structural (cubic-tetragonal) and magnetic (para-antiferro) transition connected with a resistivity jump at the same temperature. The strong interplay between lattice, charges, and spins for these oxides results from the appearance at low temperature of the distorted C-type antiferromagnetic structure. The Pr1-xSrxMnO3 magnetic phase diagram shows, for 0.9 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 1 (i.e., on the Mn4+-rich side), the existence at low temperature of C- and G-type antiferromagnetism. The absence of ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic competition explains that magnetoresistante properties are not observed in this system, in contrast to Mn4+-rich Ln(1-x)Ca(x)MnO(3) systems.

Year 1994 Publication Journal of solid state chemistry Abbreviated Journal J Solid State Chem

Abstract The structure and defect structure of Bi2-xPbxSr3.5Cu2 (CO3)O8-delta compounds with 0 less-than-or-equal-to x less-than-or-equal-to 0.75 are carefully investigated by electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy. All compounds have an orthorhombic structure with a almost-equal-to b almost-equal-to 5.4 angstrom and c almost-equal-to 39.5 angstrom. The length of the b-axis decreases monotonically with increasing x. The space group for the basic structure is Abm2. The structure can be considered as an intergrowth of Bi2Sr2CuO6 lamellae with Sr2CuO2 (CO3) lamellae along the c-axis. CO3 groups behave as bridges connecting the CuO6 octahedra. In the x = 0 compound the carbon atoms are shifted away from their symmetry positions; the orientational ordering of the CO3 groups (or the carbon shift) in successive CO planes alternates along +b and -b. Typical Bi-type and Pb-type modulations are found along the b-axis up to a Pb content x = 0.5. Electron beam irradiation destroys the ordering of the CO3 groups and alters the modulated structure.   Abstract Pure and Nb-doped TiO2 thick-films were prepared by screen-printing, starting from nanosized powders. Grain growth and crystalline phase modification occurred as consequence of firing at high temperature. It has been shown that niobium addition inhibits grain coarsening and hinders anatase-to-rutile phase transition. These semiconducting films exhibited n-type behavior, while Nb acted as donor-dopant. Gas measurements demonstrated that the films are suitable for CO or NO2 sensing. Microstructural characterization by electron microscopy and differential thermal analysis (DTA) highlights the dependence of gas-sensing behavior on film's properties. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A.   Abstract The (1 − x)BiFeO3−xLaFeO3 system has been investigated and characterized by room-temperature and high-temperature laboratory and synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction, high-resolution transmission electron microscopy, differential scanning calorimetry, and magnetization measurements. At room temperature, the ferroelectric R3c phase is observed for 0.0 ≤ x ≤ 0.10. The PbZrO3-related √2ap × 2√2ap × 4ap superstructure (where ap is the parameter of the cubic perovskite subcell) is observed for Bi0.82La0.18FeO3, while an incommensurately modulated phase is formed for 0.19 ≤ x ≤ 0.30 with the √2ap × 2ap × √2ap basic unit cell. The GdFeO3-type phase with space group Pnma (√2ap × 2ap × √2ap) is stable at 0.50 ≤ x ≤ 1. Bi0.82La0.18FeO3 has no detectable homogeneity range (space group Pnam, a = 5.6004(1) Å, b = 11.2493(3) Å, c = 15.6179(3) Å). The incommensurately modulated Bi0.75La0.25FeO3 structure was solved from synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction data (Imma(00γ)s00 superspace group, a = 5.5956(1) Å, b = 7.8171(1) Å, c = 5.62055(8) Å, q = 0.4855(4)c*, RP = 0.023, RwP = 0.033). In this structure, cooperative displacements of the Bi and O atoms occur, which order within the (AO) (where A = Bi, La) layers, resulting in an antipolar structure. Local fluctuations of the intralayer antipolar ordering are compensated by an interaction with the neighboring (AO) layers. A coupling of the antipolar displacements with the cooperative tilting distortion of the perovskite octahedral framework is proposed as the origin of the incommensurability. All the phases transform to the GdFeO3-type structure at high temperatures. Bi0.82La0.18FeO3 shows an intermediate PbZrO3-type phase with √2ap × 2√2ap × 2ap (space group Pbam; a = 5.6154(2) Å, b = 11.2710(4) Å, and c = 7.8248(2) Å at 570 K). The compounds in the compositional range of 0.18 ≤ x ≤ 0.95 are canted antiferromagnets.

Abstract The ternary oxides Ba8Ta4Ti3O24 and Ba10Ta7.04Ti1.2O30 were synthesized and their crystal structures and defects were studied by means of X-ray powder diffraction, electron diffraction, and high resolution electron microscopy. The crystal structure of Ba8Ta4Ti3O24 is based on the 8H (cchc)(2) close-packed stacking (a 10.0314 Angstrom, c = 18.869 Angstrom, SG P6(3)/mcm, Z = 3) and that of Ba10Ta7.04Ti1.2O30 and on the 10H (cchcc)(2) close-packed stacking (a = 5.7981 Angstrom, c = 23.755 Angstrom, SG P6(3)/mmc, Z = 1) of BaO3 layers. The structural refinements gave the following values for the R factors for Ba8Ta4Ti3O24 (Ba10Ta7.04Ti1.2O30) R(I) = 0.041 (0.039), R(P) = 0.108 (0.118), and R(wP) = 0.094 (0.099). The main feature of both structures is the presence of two types of face-sharing octahedra (FSO) with different occupancies by Ta atoms, Ti atoms, and vacancies, which results in the formation of a superstructure. It was shown that in the Ba8Ta4Ti3O24 structure these pairs of FSO occur in an ordered fashion and in the Ba10Ta7.04Ti1.2O30 structure in a disordered fashion. The existence of the wide range of solid solutions was shown to be also a consequence of the presence of one of the two types of face-sharing octahedra. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc,

Abstract The structure of Ca0.85CuO2 was reexamined by means of electron diffraction and electron microscopy using the newly developed method of selective imaging in intergrowth structures in which the two substructures are based on different sublattices. The results of previous work are confirmed. Moreover, it is shown that two stacking variants and their twin related structures occur in the calcium substructure. The copper-oxygen substructure occurs in one variant only; it is often modulated by the various calcium arrangements, leading to phase disorder in its modulation pattern. It is shown that the ribbons of CuO4 clusters are presumably tilted with respect to the (010) plane.

Abstract Oxygen deficient perovskites Sr0.75Y0.25Co1-xMnxO3-y, x=0.5 and 0.75, were prepared by using the citrate route at 1373-1573 K for 48 h. The cubic Pm-3m perovskite structure for x=0.5 was confirmed by electron diffraction study and refined using neutron powder diffraction (NPD) data. For x=0.75, the superstructure corresponding to a=root 2 x a(per), b=2 x a(per), c=root 2 x a(per) (a(0)b(-)b(-) tilt system, space group Imma) was revealed by electron diffraction. The solid solution Sr0.75-xCaxY0.25Co0.25Mn0.75O3-y, 0.1 <= x <= 0.6 and compound Ca0.75Y0.25Mn0.85Co0.15O2.92 were prepared in air at 1573 K for 48 h. The crystal structure of Ca0.75Y0.25Mn0.85Co0.15O2.92 was refined using NPD data (S.G. Pnma, a=5.36595(4), b=7.5091(6), c=5.2992(4) angstrom, R-p=0.057, R-wp=0.056, chi(2)=4.26). High-temperature thermal expansion properties of the prepared compounds were studied in air using both dilatometry and high-temperature X-ray powder diffraction data (HTXRPD). They expanding non-linearly at 298-1073 K due to the loss of oxygen at high temperatures. Calculated average thermal expansion coefficients (TECs) for Sr0.75Y0.25Co1-xMnxO3-y, x=0.5, 0.75 and Ca0.75Y0.25Mn0.85Co0.15O2.92(1) are 15.5, 15.1, and 13.8 ppm K-1, respectively. Anisotropy of the thermal expansion along different unit cell axes was observed for Sr0.15Ca0.6Y0.25Co0.25Mn0.75O3-y, and Ca0.75Y0.25Mn0.85Co0.15O2.92. Conductivity of Sr0.75Y0.25Co1-xMnxO3-y, x=0.5 and 0.75 increases with the temperature reaching 110 S/cm for x=0.5 and 44 S/cm for x=0.75 at 1173 K. Samples of Sr0.75-xCaxY0.25Co0.25Mn0.75O3-y, 0.1 <= y <= 0.6 were found to be n-type conductors at room temperature with the similar temperature dependence of the conductivity and demonstrated the increase of the sigma value from similar to 1 to similar to 50 S/cm as the temperature increases from 300 to 1173 K. Their conductivity is described in terms of the small polaron charge transport with the activation energy (E-p) increasing from 340 to 430 meV with an increase of the calcium content from x=0 to x=0.6.   Year 2004 Publication Chemistry and materials Abbreviated Journal Chem Mater
  Volume 16 Issue Pages 2578-2584
Keywords A1 Journal article; Electron microscopy for materials research (EMAT)
Abstract The crystal structure and the microstructure of epitaxial Sr4Fe6O13+/-delta thin films grown on a single-crystal SrTiO3 substrate by PLD have been investigated. A combination of electron diffraction and high-resolution microscopy allows us to refine the structure and to identify an incommensurate modulation in the Sr4Fe6O13+/-delta films. The incommensurate structure (q = alphaa(m)* approximate to 0.39alpha(m)*, superspace group Xmmm(alpha00)0s0) can be interpreted as an oxygen-deficient modification in the Fe2O2.5 double layers. Moreover, it is shown that the experimentally determined a component of the modulation can be used consistently to estimate the local oxygen content in the Sr4Fe6O13+/-delta films. The compound composition can therefore be described as Sr4Fe6O12+2alpha and the value alpha = 0.39 corresponds to a Sr4Fe6O12.78 composition. The misfit stress along the Sr4Fe6O13+/-delta/SrTiO3 interface is accommodated via both elastic deformation and inelastic mechanisms (misfit dislocations and 90degrees rotation twins). The present results also suggest the existence of SrFeO3 perovskite in the Sr4Fe6O13+/-delta films.
