“Dry reforming of methane in a nanosecond repetitively pulsed discharge: chemical kinetics modeling”. Zhang L, Heijkers S, Wang W, Martini LM, Tosi P, Yang D, Fang Z, Bogaerts A, Plasma Sources Science &, Technology 31, 055014 (2022). http://doi.org/10.1088/1361-6595/ac6bbc
Abstract: Nanosecond pulsed discharge plasma shows a high degree of non-equilibrium, and exhibits relatively high conversions in the dry reforming of methane. To further improve the application, a good insight of the underlying mechanisms is desired. We developed a chemical kinetics model to explore the underlying plasma chemistry in nanosecond pulsed discharge. We compared the calculated conversions and product selectivities with experimental results, and found reasonable agreement in a wide range of specific energy input. Hence, the chemical kinetics model is able to provide insight in the underlying plasma chemistry. The modeling results predict that the most important dissociation reaction of CO2and CH4is electron impact dissociation. C2H2is the most abundant hydrocarbon product, and it is mainly formed upon reaction of two CH2radicals. Furthermore, the vibrational excitation levels of CO2contribute for 85% to the total dissociation of CO2.

“Quantitative measurement for the microstructural parameters of nano-precipitates in Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloys”. Li K, Idrissi H, Sha G, Song M, Lu J, Shi H, Wang W, Ringer SP, Du Y, Schryvers D, Materials characterization 118, 352 (2016). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.matchar.2016.06.007
Abstract: Size, number density and volume fraction of nano-precipitates are important microstructural parameters controlling the strengthening of materials. In this work a widely accessible, convenient, moderately time efficient method with acceptable accuracy and precision has been provided for measurement of volume fraction of nano-precipitates in crystalline materials. The method is based on the traditional but highly accurate technique of measuring foil thickness via convergent beam electron diffraction. A new equation is proposed and verified with the aid of 3-dimensional atom probe (3DAP) analysis, to compensate for the additional error resulted from the hardly distinguishable contrast of too short incomplete precipitates cut by the foil surface. The method can be performed on a regular foil specimen with a modem LaB6 or field-emission-gun transmission electron microscope. Precisions around +/- 16% have been obtained for precipitate volume fractions of needle-like beta ''/C and Q precipitates in an aged Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy. The measured number density is dose to that directly obtained using 3DAP analysis by a misfit of 45%, and the estimated precision for number density measurement is about +/- 11%. The limitations of the method are also discussed.

“Isolating hydrogen in hexagonal boron nitride bubbles by a plasma treatment”. He L, Wang H, Chen L, Wang X, Xie H, Jiang C, Li C, Elibol K, Meyer J, Watanabe K, Taniguchi T, Wu Z, Wang W, Ni Z, Miao X, Zhang C, Zhang D, Wang H, Xie X, Nature communications 10, 2815 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1038/s41467-019-10660-9
Abstract: Atomically thin hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) is often regarded as an elastic film that is impermeable to gases. The high stabilities in thermal and chemical properties allow h-BN to serve as a gas barrier under extreme conditions. Here, we demonstrate the isolation of hydrogen in bubbles of h-BN via plasma treatment. Detailed characterizations reveal that the substrates do not show chemical change after treatment. The bubbles are found to withstand thermal treatment in air, even at 800°C. Scanning transmission electron microscopy investigation shows that the h-BN multilayer has a unique aligned porous stacking nature, which is essential for the character of being transparent to atomic hydrogen but impermeable to hydrogen molecules. In addition, we successfully demonstrated the extraction of hydrogen gases from gaseous compounds or mixtures containing hydrogen element. The successful production of hydrogen bubbles on h-BN flakes has potential for further application in nano/ micro-electromechanical systems and hydrogen storage.

“Quantum anomalous Hall effect in a stable 1T-YN2 monolayer with a large nontrivial bandgap and a high Chern number”. Kong X, Li L, Leenaerts O, Wang W, Liu X-J, Peeters FM, Nanoscale 10, 8153 (2018). http://doi.org/10.1039/C8NR00571K
Abstract: The quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) effect is a topologically nontrivial phase, characterized by a non-zero Chern number defined in the bulk and chiral edge states in the boundary. Using first-principles calculations, we demonstrate the presence of the QAH effect in a 1T-YN2 monolayer, which was recently predicted to be a Dirac half metal without spin-orbit coupling (SOC). We show that the inclusion of SOC opens up a large nontrivial bandgap of nearly 0.1 eV in the electronic band structure. This results in the nontrivial bulk topology, which is confirmed by the calculation of Berry curvature, anomalous Hall conductance and the presence of chiral edge states. Remarkably, a QAH phase of high Chern number C = 3 is found, and there are three corresponding gapless chiral edge states emerging inside the bulk gap. Different substrates are also chosen to study the possible experimental realization of the 1T-YN2 monolayer, while retaining its nontrivial topological properties. Our results open a new avenue in searching for QAH insulators with high temperature and high Chern numbers, which can have nontrivial practical applications.

“Magnetopolaron effect on shallow-impurity states in the presence of magnetic and intense terahertz laser fields in the Faraday configuration”. Wang W, Van Duppen B, Van der Donck M, Peeters FM, Physical review B 97, 064108 (2018). http://doi.org/10.1103/PHYSREVB.97.064108
Abstract: The magnetopolaron effect on shallow-impurity states in semiconductors is investigated when subjected simultaneously to a magnetic field and an intense terahertz laser field within the Faraday configuration. We use a time-dependent nonperturbative theory to describe electron interactions. The externally applied fields are exactly included via a laser-dressed interaction potential. Through a variational approach we evaluate the binding energy of the shallow-impurity states. We find that the interaction strength of the laser-dressed Coulomb potential can not only be enhanced but also weakened by varying the two external fields. In this way, the binding energy can be tuned by the external fields and red-or blue-shifted with respect to the static binding energy. In the nonresonant polaron region, a magnetopolaron correction that includes the effects of photon process is observed. In the resonant polaron region, moreover, the resonant magnetopolaron effect accompanied by the emission and absorption of a single photon is distinctly observed. This can be modulated to be far away from the reststrahlen band. The intriguing findings of this paper can be observed experimentally and, in turn, provide a way to measure the strength of the electron-phonon interaction.

“Magneto-polarons in monolayer transition-metal dichalcogenides”. Chen Q, Wang W, Peeters FM, Journal of applied physics 123, 214303 (2018). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.5025907
Abstract: Landau levels (LLs) are modified by the Frohlich interaction which we investigate within the improved Wigner-Brillouin theory for energies both below and above the longitudinal-optical-continuum in monolayer MoS2.., WS2, MoSe2, and WSe2. Polaron corrections to the LLs are enhanced in monolayer MoS2 as compared to WS2. A series of levels are found at h omega(LO) + lh omega(c), and in addition, the Frohlich interaction lifts the degeneracy between the levels nh omega(c) and h omega(LO) + lh omega(c) resulting in an anticrossing. The screening effect due to the environment plays an important role in the polaron energy corrections, which are also affected by the effective thickness r(eff) parameter. The polaron anticrossing energy gap E-gap decreases with increasing effective thickness r(eff). Published by AIP Publishing.

“Intense-terahertz-laser-modulated magnetopolaron effect on shallow-donor states in the presence of magnetic field in the Voigt configuration”. Wang W, Van Duppen B, Peeters FM, Physical review B 99, 014114 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1103/PHYSREVB.99.014114
Abstract: The laser-modulated magnetopolaron effect on shallow donors in semiconductors is investigated in the presence of a magnetic field in the Voigt configuration. A nonperturbative approach is used to describe the electron-photon interaction by including the radiation field in an exact way via a laser-dressed interaction potential. Through a variational approach we evaluate the donor binding energy. We find that the interaction strength of the laser-dressed Coulomb potential in the z direction cannot only be enhanced but also weakened by the radiation field, while that in the x-y plane is only weakened. In this way, the binding energy of the states with odd z parity, like 2p(z) can be decreased or increased with respect to its static binding energy by the radiation field, while that of the other states can be only decreased. Furthermore, all binding energies become insensitive to the magnetic field if the radiation field is strong. The magnetopolaron effect on these energies is studied within second-order time-dependent perturbation theory. In the nonresonant region, a laser-modulated magnetopolaron correction, including the effect of single-photon processes, is observed. In the resonant region, a laser-modulated magnetopolaron effect, accompanied by the emission and absorption of a single photon, is found. Moreover, the 1s -> 2p(+) transition, accompanied by the emission of a single photon, is tuned by the radiation field into resonance with the longitudinal-optical phonon branch. This is electrically analogous to the magnetopolaron effect, and therefore we name it the dynamical magnetopolaron effect. Finally, by changing the frequency of the radiation field, these interesting effects can be tuned to be far away from the reststrahlen band and, therefore, can be detected experimentally. This in turn provides a direct measure of the electron-phonon interaction.

“T4,4,4-graphyne : a 2D carbon allotrope with an intrinsic direct bandgap”. Wang W, Li L, Kong X, Van Duppen B, Peeters FM, Solid state communications 293, 23 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.SSC.2019.02.001
Abstract: A novel two-dimensional (2D) structurally stable carbon allotrope is proposed using first-principles calculations, which is a promising material for water purification and for electronic devices due to its unique porous structure and electronic properties. Rectangular and hexagonal rings are connected with acetylenic linkages, forming a nanoporous structure with a pore size of 6.41 angstrom, which is known as T-4,T-4,T-4-graphyne. This 2D sheet exhibits a direct bandgap of 0.63 eV at the M point, which originates from the p(z)( )atomic orbitals of carbon atoms as confirmed by a tight-binding model. Importantly, T-4,T-4,T-4-graphyne is found to be energetically more preferable than the experimentally realized beta-graphdiyne, it is dynamically stable and can withstand temperatures up to 1500 K.
