Abstract: We investigate the ground and excited states of a bipolar artificial molecule composed of two vertically coupled quantum dots containing different type of carriers-electrons and holes-in equilibrium. The approach based on exact diagonalization is used and reveals an intricate pattern of ground-state angular momentum switching and a rearrangement of approximate single-particle levels as a function of the interdot coupling strength.

Abstract: The effect of the electric field on an exciton confined in a pair of vertically coupled quantum dots is studied. We use a single-band approximation and a parabolic model potential. As a result of these idealizations, we obtain a numerically solvable model, which is used to describe the influence of the electron-hole interaction on the Stark effect for the lowest-energy photo luminescence lines. We show that for intermediate tunnel coupling between the dots this interaction leads to an anomalous Stark effect with an essential deviation of the recombination energy from the usual quadratic dependence on the electric field. Abstract: The magnetic coupling between two concentric mesoscopic superconductors with nonzero thickness is studied using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. We calculated the free energy, the expelled field, the total field profile, the Cooper-pair density, and the current density distribution. By putting a smaller superconducting disk or ring in the center of a larger ring, the properties change drastically. Extra ground-state transitions are found, where the total vorticity stays the same, but the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes by 1. Due to the magnetic coupling, the current in the external ring exhibits extra jumps at the transition fields where the vorticity of the inner superconductor changes. In this case, for certain temperatures, re-entrant behavior and switching on and off of the superconducting behavior of the rings are found as a function of the magnetic field. A H-T phase diagram is obtained for the situation where the inner ring has a higher critical temperature than the outer ring. An analytic expression for the magnetic coupling is obtained for thin rings and extreme type-II superconductors.

Abstract: We studied theoretically the effect of time symmetric and asymmetric electromagnetic (e.m.) radiation on the phase-slip process in superconducting wires in the regime where there is no stimulation of superconductivity. We found that for large amplitudes j(ac) of the symmetric ac signal the value of the lower critical current j(c1)(j(ac)) at which the voltage vanishes in the sample oscillates as a function of j(ac). The amplitude of these oscillations decays with increasing power of the ac signal, and we explain it either by the existence of a maximal current j(c3) beyond which no phase slips can be created or by a weak heat removal from the sample. Applying an asymmetric in time signal (with zero dc current) we show that it may lead to a finite voltage in the system (i.e., ratchet effect). At high enough frequencies the rectified voltage is directly proportional to the frequency of the applied e.m. radiation. These properties resemble in many aspects the behavior of a Josephson junction under e.m. radiation. The differences are mainly connected to the effect of the transport current on the magnitude of the order parameter.

Abstract: The crystal field in the orientationally disordered phase of C90-fullerite is derived from an intermolecular potential model, which takes into account the geometric difference between double bonds and single bonds. The molecules are modelled as rigid bodies, atoms and single bonds are treated as single interaction centers, while double bonds are described by a distribution of interaction centers along the bond. The crystal field is expanded in terms of cubic rotator functions. The calculated expansion coefficients are compared with empirical values derived from diffraction data. The angular dependence of the crystal field, resulting from an anticlockwise rotation of the molecule around the [111] axis, exhibits an absolute and a secondary minimum at angles of 98-degrees and 38-degrees respectively. The self interaction of the molecule in a deformable lattice is investigated.

Abstract: A model of the intermolecular potential in solid C-60, which is based on Born-Mayer repulsions, van der Waals attractions, and electrostatic multipoles, is presented. The potential is expanded in terms of multipolar rotator functions. The orientation-orientation interaction and the crystal field are calculated. The orientational phase transition to the Pa3 phase is studied with the methods of statistical mechanics. The discontinuity of the order parameter at the transition and the temperature evolution of the order parameter are calculated. The lattice contraction at the phase transition is evaluated. The influence of the lattice contraction on the crystal field and on the orientational order is studied.

“Crystal structures of polymerized fullerides AC60, A=K, Rb, Cs, and alkali-mediated interactions”. Verberck B, Michel KH, Nikolaev AV, The journal of chemical physics 116, 10462 (2002). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.1475745
Abstract: Starting from a model of rigid interacting C-60 polymer chains on an orthorhombic lattice, we study the mutual orientation of the chains and the stability of the crystalline structures Pmnn and I2/m. We take into account (i) van der Waals interactions and electric quadrupole interactions between C-60 monomers on different chains as well as (ii) interactions of the monomers with the surrounding alkali atoms. The direct interactions (i) always lead to an antiferrorotational structure Pmnn with alternate orientation of the C-60 chains in planes (001). The interactions (ii) with the alkalis consist of two parts: translation-rotation (TR) coupling where the orientations of the chains interact with displacements of the alkalis, and quadrupolar electronic polarizability (ep) coupling, where the electric quadrupoles on the C-60 monomers interact with induced quadrupoles due to excited electronic d-states of the alkalis. Both interactions (ii) lead to an effective orientation-orientation interaction between the C-60 chains and always favor the ferrorotational structure I2/m, where C-60 chains have a same orientation. The structures Pmnn for KC60 and I2/m for Rb- and CsC60 are the result of a competition between the direct interaction (i) and the alkali-mediated interactions (ii). In Rb- and CsC60 the latter are found to be dominant, the preponderant role being played by the quadrupolar electronic polarizability of the alkali ions. (C) 2002 American Institute of Physics.

Abstract: We investigate theoretically the charge and spin transport in quantum wires grown along different crystallographic planes in the presence of the Rashba spinorbit interaction (RSOI) and the Dresselhaus spinorbit interaction (DSOI). We find that changing the crystallographic planes leads to a variation of the anisotropy of the conductance due to a different interplay between the RSOI and DSOI, since the DSOI is induced by bulk inversion asymmetry, which is determined by crystallographic plane. This interplay depends sensitively on the crystallographic planes, and consequently leads to the anisotropic charge and spin transport in quantum wires embedded in different crystallographic planes.

Abstract: We use kinetic Monte Carlo simulations to investigate current fluctuations in boundary driven generalized exclusion processes, in different dimensions. Simulation results are in full agreement with predictions based on the additivity principle and the macroscopic fluctuation theory. The current statistics are independent of the shape of the contacts with the reservoirs, provided they are macroscopic in size. In general, the current distribution depends on the spatial dimension. For the special cases of the symmetric simple exclusion process and the zero-range process, the current statistics are the same for all spatial dimensions.

Abstract: Vortex loops are generated by the inhomogeneous stray field of a magnetic dipole on top of a current-carrying mesoscopic superconductor. Cutting and recombination processes unfold under the applied drive, resulting in periodic voltage oscillations across the sample. We show that a direct and detectable consequence of the cutting and recombination of these vortex loops in the present setup is the onset of vortices at surfaces where they were absent prior to the application of the external current. The nonlinear dynamics of vortex loops is studied within the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory to describe the profound three-dimensional features of their time evolution.

Abstract: Cyclotron resonance (CR) of the electrons accumulated at sheets with heavy Si doping in InSb were observed using far infrared radiation. The angular dependence of the CR follows closely the 1/cos theta behaviour with some small deviations at high angles attributed to coupling between subbands. From the effective mass of the lowest subband, which is found to be 0.027m(o), the bottom of the lowest subband was determined to lie 125 meV below the Fermi level.

Abstract: The energy spectrum of a one-electron quantum dot doped with a single magnetic ion is studied in the presence of an external magnetic field. The allowed cyclotron resonance (CR) transitions are obtained together with their oscillator strength as a function of the magnetic field, the position of the magnetic ion, and the quantum dot confinement strength. With increasing magnetic field a ferromagnetic-antiferromagnetic transition is found, which results in clear signatures in the CR absorption. It leads to discontinuities in the transition energies and the oscillator strengths and to an increase in the number of allowed transitions.

Abstract: The buckling of defected rectangular graphene nanoribbons when subjected to axial stress with supported boundary conditions is investigated using atomistic simulations. The buckling strain and mechanical stiffness of monolayer graphene decrease with the percentage of randomly distributed vacancies. The elasticity to plasticity transition in the stress-strain curve, at low percentage of vacancies, are found to be almost equal to the buckling strain thresholds and they decrease with increasing percentage of vacancies.

Abstract: We study the rectification of vortex motion in an asymmetric ring channel in a Corbino setup. With an applied ac current, the motion of vortices in the channel is rectified by the asymmetric potential and induces a dc net flow. The net flow in such a system strongly depends on vortex density, and we distinguish “single-vortex'' rectification regime (for low density, when each vortex is rectified individually) determined by the potential-energy landscape inside each cell of the channel and ”multi-vortex'', or "collective'', rectification (high density case) when the interaction between vortices becomes important. Abstract: Explicit analytic expressions are obtained for the density of states D(E) and Fermi energy E-F of a two-dimensional electron gas in the presence of a weak and periodic unidirectional electric or magnetic modulation and of a uniform perpendicular magnetic field B. The Landau levels broaden into bands and their width, proportional to the modulation strength, oscillates with B and gives rise to Weiss oscillations in D(E), E-F and the transport coefficients. When both electric and magnetic modulations are present the position of the resulting oscillations depends on the ratio delta between the two modulation strengths. When the modulations are out of phase there is no shift in the position of the oscillations when delta varies and for a particular value of delta the oscillations are suppressed.

Abstract: The density of states (DOS) and the optical conductivity of graphene is calculated in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and where scattering on charged and short-range impurities is included. The standard Kubo formula is employed where the self-energy induced by impurity scattering and the Green's function are calculated self-consistently including inter-Landau level (LL) coupling and screening effects. It is found that the scattering from those two types of impurities results in a symmetric LL broadening and asymmetric inter-LL coupling renormalizes the LL positions to lower energy. The peak position and intensity of the magneto-optical conductivity depends on the filling factor and the broadened DOS. Good agreement is found with recent cyclotron resonance measurements.

“Dependence of the electronic and transport properties of metal-MoSe2 interfaces on contact structures”. Çakir D, Peeters FM, Physical review : B : condensed matter and materials physics 89, 245403 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1103/PhysRevB.89.245403
Abstract: Transition metal dichalcogenides (TMDs) are considered as promising candidates for next generation of electronic and optoelectronic devices. To make use of these materials, for instance in field effect transistor applications, it is mandatory to know the detailed properties of contacts of such TMDs with metal electrodes. Here, we investigate the role of the contact structure on the electronic and transport properties of metal-MoSe2 interfaces. Two different contact types, namely face and edge contacts, are studied. We consider both low (Sc) and high (Au) work function metals in order to thoroughly elucidate the role of the metal work function and the type of metal. First principles plane wave calculations and transport calculations based on nonequilibrium Green's function formalism reveal that the contact type has a large impact on the electronic and transport properties of metal-MoSe2 interfaces. For the Sc electrode, the Schottky barrier heights are around 0.25 eV for face contact and bigger than 0.6 eV for edge contact. For the Au case, we calculate very similar barrier heights for both contact types with an average value of 0.5 eV. Furthermore, while the face contact is found to be highly advantageous as compared to the edge contact for the Sc electrode, the latter contact becomes a better choice for the Au electrode. Our findings provide guidelines for the fabrication of TMD-based devices.
