Abstract: Broad area as well as buried heterostructure lasers based on In0.72Ga0.28As0.62P0.38/InP and emitting at 1.3 mum are grown by liquid phase epitaxy and are studied in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction, secondary ion mass-spectrometry, and electroluminescence. The InGaAsP epilayer is found to be well lattice-matched and of good structural quality. A tentative explanation is presented for the spinodal decomposition observed in the InGaAsP alloy. We also report on the high performance characteristics of the infrared lasers.

“LPE growth and characterization of InGaAsP/InP heterostructures: IR-emitting diodes at 1.66 μm: application to the remote monitoring of methane gas”. Volkov VV, van Landuyt J, Marushkin K, Gijbels R, Férauge C, Vasilyev MG, Shelyakin AA, Sokolovsky AA, Sensors and actuators : A : physical 62, 624 (1997). http://doi.org/10.1016/S0924-4247(97)01377-0
Abstract: Highly effective IR light-emitting diodes operating at the wavelength 1.66 mu m and based on the buried heterostructure In0.88Ga0.12As0.26P0.74/ In0.72Ga0.28As0.62P0.38/In0.53Ga0.47As/InP have been grown by liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) and characterized in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM),electron diffraction (ED), X-ray diffraction (XRD), secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and electroluminescence measurements. The InGaAsP epilayers are found to be well lattice matched and of good structural quality. A tentative explanation is presented for the spinodal decomposition observed in InGaAsP alloys. A new type of selective CK, gas sensor has been developed and fabricated an the basis of the IR light-emitting diode mentioned above. Especially designed for the remote control of CH4 gas via fibre optics, an integrated optoelectronic readout scheme has been developed and tested, It is shown that the proposed type of sensor can be used for the quantitative remote control of CH4 gas concentration (0.2-100%) via a fibre glass line up to a distance of 2 x 1 km. “Unveiling the composition of sulphur sensitization specks by their interactions with TAI”. Charlier E, van Doorselaer M, Gijbels R, de Keyzer R, Geuens I, Journal Of Imaging Science And Technology 44, 235 (2000)
Abstract: A two-step process for the formation of sensitivity centers different from earlier described two-step processes was found for sulfur sensitized emulsions. After deposition of sulfur in the first step, it was found that the second step does not consist of rearrangement of sulfur over the surface, but of the supply of silver interstitial ions towards the deposited sulfur clusters. The two processes could be separated by adsorbing and desorbing TAI (4-hydroxy-1, 3,3a, 7-tetraazaindene) at/from the silver halide surface. When 1.5 mmol TAI/mol Ag is added before the sulfur reaction, the silver interstitials are immobilized but sulfur still can be deposited at the same level. By lowering the pH to 2.50 after this sulfur reaction, TAI is desorbed from the surface and the released interstitials then cause a restoration of the properties of a sulfur system without TAI. These effects could be demonstrated via diffuse reflectance spectroscopy (DRS), sensitometry and dielectric loss measurements. We could also confirm the isolation of silver sulfide clusters by TAI from other chemicals in the solution, by adsorption of TAI on the clusters.

“Ab initio study of the spectroscopy, kinetics, and thermochemistry of the C2N and CN2 molecules”. Martin JML, Taylor PR, François JP, Gijbels R, Chemical physics letters 226, 475 (1994). http://doi.org/10.1016/0009-2614(94)00758-6
Abstract: Several structures and electronic states of the C2N and CN2 molecules have been studied using complete active space SCF (CASSCF), multireference configuration interaction (MRCI), and coupled cluster (CCSD(T)) methods. Both molecules are very stable. Our best computed total atomization energies SIGMAD(e) are 288.6 +/- 2 kcal/mol for CN2, and 294.1 +/- 2 kcal/mol for C2N. The CNC and CCN structures for C2N are nearly isoenergetic. CNN(3PI) lies about 30 kcal/mol above NCN(3PI(g)), but has a high barrier towards interconversion and is therefore observed experimentally. Computed harmonic frequencies for CNN are sensitive to the correlation treatment: they are reproduced well using multireference methods as well as the CCSD(T) method. High spin contamination has a detrimental effect on computed harmonic frequencies at the CCSD(T) level.

Abstract: The equilibrium bond length, harmonic frequency, first and second order anharmonicity constants, rotational and centrifugal distortion constants, as well as the rotation-vibrational and centrifugal coupling constants for the ground X(2) Sigma(+) and first excited A(2) Pi states of the SiN radical have been calculated at the complete active space SCF (CASSCF), multireference CI (MRCI) and coupled cluster (CCSD(T)) levels using Dunning's correlation-consistent basis sets. The excitation energy of the A(2) Pi State has also been computed at these theoretical levels. Dipole moments of SiN in the X(2) Sigma(+) and A(2) Pi states are given. Our study shows that core correlation must be considered in order to obtain satisfactory accuracy for the spectroscopic constants.

“Accurate ab initio quartic force fields and thermochemistry of FNO and CINO”. Martin JML, François JP, Gijbels R, The journal of physical chemistry 98, 11394 (1994). http://doi.org/10.1021/j100095a022
Abstract: The quartic force fields of FNO and CINO have been computed at the CCSD(T)/cc-pVTZ level. Using an ''augmented'' basis set dramatically improves results for FNO but has no significant effect for CINO. The best computed force field for FNO yields harmonic frequencies and fundamentals in excellent agreement with experiment. Overall, the force fields proposed in the present work are probably the most reliable ones ever published for these molecules. Total atomization energies have been computed using basis sets of spdfg quality: our best estimates are Sigma D-0 = 208.5 +/- 1 and 185.4 +/- 1 kcal/mol for FN0 and CINO, respectively. The computed value for FNO suggests a problem with the established experimental heat of formation. Thermodynamic tables in JANAF style at 100-2000 K are presented for both FNO and CINO.

“Capabilities and limitations of Fourier transform laser microprobe mass spectrometry for molecular analysis of solids”. Ignatova VA, van Vaeck L, Gijbels R, Adams F, Vacuum 69, 307 (2002). http://doi.org/10.1016/S0042-207X(02)00350-0
Abstract: Fourier transform laser microprobe mass spectrometry (FT LMMS) has been developed for the molecular analysis of both organic and inorganic components at the surface of microobjects with the ultimate specificity of high-mass resolution. These capabilities are needed in numerous applications of practical material analysis, such as tracing back anomalies in microobjects. The purpose of this paper is to address representative example from industrial trouble shooting, in which organic and inorganic analytes in a single microparticle have been identified unambiguously. This motivates the research to extend the methodology towards quantification. This paper deals with the fundamental aspect of information depth, specifically for inorganic molecular adduct ions. Finally, data will show the quantitative capabilities of FT LMMS. A suitable methodology for the preparation of reference specimens has allowed the empirical calibration of the response as a function of the local concentration to be achieved.
