Abstract |
Methyl-functionalized Ti-MCM-41 nanoparticles with a size of 80 to 160 nm (Me-Ti-MCM-41 NP) were directly prepared via a dilute solution route by the co-condensation of tetraethoxysilane and methylalkoxysilanes in sodium hydroxide medium at room temperature. The characterization results showed the existence of ordered hexagonal mesoporous structure and tetrahedral Ti species in the nanoparticles. In the epoxidation of cyclohexene with tert-butyl hydroperoxide and aqueous H2O2, Me-Ti-MCM-41 NP samples displayed higher turnover frequencies (TOFs) for cyclohexene and initial reaction rates compared to Ti-MCM-41 and methyl-functionalized Ti-MCM-41 with normal particle size and to non-functionalized Ti-MCM-41 nanoparticles. Simultaneously, a higher selectivity for cyclohexene epoxide was observed in the case of aqueous H2O2, suggesting that the hydrolysis of cyclohexene epoxide with water is reduced on Me-Ti-MCM-41 NP samples. The improved catalytic behavior of Me-Ti-MCM-41 NP is discussed both in terms of the nanosize and methylation of the surface of the catalyst particles. The regeneration of Me-Ti-MCM-41 NP with tert-butyl hydroperoxide solution was evaluated via washing and calcination approaches. |

Abstract |
Unlike other 3d transition metal monoxides (MnO, FeO, CoO, and NiO), CuO is found in a low-symmetry distorted monoclinic structure rather than the rocksalt structure. We report here of the growth of ultrathin CuO films on SrTiO3 substrates; scanning transmission electron microscopy was used to show the stabilization of a tetragonal rocksalt structure with an elongated c-axis such that c/a similar to 1.34 and the Cu-O-Cu bond angle similar to 180 degrees, pointing to metastable six-fold coordinated Cu. X-ray absorption spectroscopy demonstrates that the hole at the Cu site for the CuO is localized in 3d(x2-y2) orbital unlike the well-studied monoclinic CuO phase. The experimental confirmation of the tetragonal structure of CuO opens up new avenues to explore electronic and magnetic properties of six-fold coordinated Cu. Copyright (C) EPLA, 2014 |

Abstract |
The dissociation of 60degrees and screw dislocations in diamond is modeled in an approach combining isotropic elasticity theory with ab initio-based tight-binding total-energy calculations. Both dislocations are found to dissociate with a substantial lowering of their line energies. For the 60degrees dislocation, however, an energy barrier to dissociation is found. We investigate the core structure of a screw dislocation distinguishing “shuffle,” “mixed,” and “glide” cores. The latter is found to be the most stable undissociated screw dislocation. Further, the glide motion of 90degrees and 30degrees partials is discussed in terms of a process involving the thermal formation and subsequent migration of kinks along the dislocation line. The calculated activation barriers to dislocation motion show that the 30degrees partial is less mobile than the 90degrees partial. Finally, high-resolution electron microscopy is performed on high-temperature, high-pressure annealed natural brown diamond, allowing the core regions of 60degrees dislocations to be imaged. The majority of dislocations are found to be dissociated. However, in some cases, undissociated 60degrees dislocations were also observed. |

Abstract |
For column structures, such as fee-based alloys viewed along the cube direction, the concept of electron channelling through the atom columns is more and more used to interpret the corresponding HREM images. In the case of(partially) disordered columns, the projected potential approach which is used in the channelling description must be questioned since the arrangement of the atoms along the beam direction might affect the exit wave of the electrons. In this paper, we critically inspect this top-bottom effect using multi-slice calculations. A modified channelling theory is introduced which turns out to be very appropriate for the interpretation of these results. For substitutionally disordered column structures, it is also discussed how to link the chemical composition of the material to statistical data of the HREM image. This results in a convenient tool to discern images taken at different thicknesses and focus values. |

Abstract |
A facile urea-assisted hydrothermal synthesis and systematic characterization of hydroxyapatite (HA) with calcium nitrate tetrahydrate and diammonium hydrogen phosphate as precursors are reported. The advantage of the proposed technique over previously reported synthetic approaches is the simple but precise control of the HA crystals morphology, which is achieved by employing an intensive, stepwise, and slow thermal decomposition of urea as well as varying initial concentrations of starting reagents. Whereas the plate-, hexagonal prism- and needle-like HA particles preferentially growth along the c-axis, the smaller and fine-plate-like HA crystals demonstrate crystal growth along the (102) and (211) directions, uncommon for HA. Furthermore, it was established that the hydrothermally derived powdered products are phase-pure HA containing CO32− anions in the crystal lattice, that is, AB-type carbonated hydroxyapatite. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and electron diffraction (ED) of selected samples reveal that the as-prepared HA crystals are single-crystalline and exhibit a nearly defect-free microstructure. The hardness and elastic modulus of the hexagonal prism-like HA crystals have been investigated on a nanoscale using the nanoindentation technique; the observed trends are discussed. |

Abstract |
The effect of the oxygen plasma treatment on the electronic states of multi-wall carbon nanotubes (MWCNTs) is analyzed by X-ray photoemission measurements (XPS) and UPS, both using synchrotron radiation. It is found that the plasma treatment effectively grafts oxygen at the CNT-surface. Thereafter, the interaction between evaporated Pd and pristine or oxygen plasma-treated MWCNTs is investigated. Pd is found to nucleate at defective sites, whether initially present or introduced by oxygen plasma treatment. The plasma treatment induced a uniform dispersion of Pd clusters at the CNT-surface. The absence of additional features in the Pd 3d and C I s core levels spectra testifies that no Pd-C bond is formed. The shift of the Pd 3d core level towards high-binding energy for the smallest clusters is attributed to the Coulomb energy of the charged final state. (C) 2008 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
The novel synthesis of a polymeric interface grown from the surface of bright fluorescent nanodiamonds is reported. The polymer enables bioorthogonal attachment of various molecules by click chemistry; the particles are resistant to nonspecific protein adsorption and show outstanding colloidal stability in buffers and biological media. The coating fully preserves the unique optical properties of the nitrogen-vacancy centers that are crucial for bioimaging and sensoric applications. |

Abstract |
In this study of the changes induced by exposing MWCNTs to a nitrogen plasma, it was found by HRTEM that the atomic nitrogen exposure does not significantly etch the surface of the carbon nanotube (CNT). Nevertheless, the atomic nitrogen generated by a microwave plasma effectively grafts amine, nitrile, amide, and oxime groups onto the CNT surface, as observed by XPS, altering the density of valence electronic states, as seen in UPS. Abstract |
Production of nanodiamond particles containing substitutional nitrogen is important for a wide variety of advanced applications. In the current work nanodiamond particles synthesized from a mixture of graphite and hexogen were analyzed to determine the presence of substitutional nitrogen using pulsed electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR) spectroscopy. Nitrogen paramagnetic centers in the amount of 1.2 ppm have been identified. The spin relaxation characteristics for both nitrogen and surface defects are also reported. A new approach for efficient depletion of the strong non-nitrogen EPR signal in nanodiamond material by immersing nanodiamond particles into ice matrix is suggested. This approach allows an essential decrease of the spin relaxation time of the dominant non-nitrogen defects, while preserving the substitutional nitrogen spin relaxation time. |

Abstract |
Flexible graphite foil produced by rolling expanded graphite impregnated with boron oxide was analyzed by laser mass spectroscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, scanning electron microscopy and thermogravimetry. It was shown that the modification of the graphite foil by boron oxide increases the onset temperature of oxidation by ∼ 150 °C. Impregnation of less than 2 mass% boron oxide also increased the tensile strength of the materials. The observed improvement was attributed to the blocking of active sites by boron oxide, which is probably chemically bonded to the edges of graphene sheets in expanded graphite particles. |

Abstract |
The artificial leaf project calls for new materials enabling multielectron catalysis with minimal overpotential, high turnover frequency, and long-term stability. Is graphene a better material than carbon nanotubes to enhance water oxidation catalysis for energy applications? Here we show that functionalized graphene with a tailored distribution of polycationic, quaternized, ammonium pendants provides an sp(2) carbon nanoplatform to anchor a totally inorganic tetraruthenate catalyst, mimicking the oxygen evolving center of natural PSII. The resulting hybrid material displays oxygen evolution at overpotential as low as 300 mV at neutral pH with negligible loss of performance after 4 h testing. This multilayer electroactive asset enhances the turnover frequency by 1 order of magnitude with respect to the isolated catalyst, and provides a definite up-grade of the carbon nanotube material, with a similar surface functionalization. Our innovation is based on a noninvasive, synthetic protocol for graphene functionalization that goes beyond the ill-defined oxidation-reduction methods, allowing a definite control of the surface properties. |

Abstract |
The experimental search for magnetic monopole particles(1-3) has, so far, been in vain. Nevertheless, these elusive particles of magnetic charge have fuelled a rich field of theoretical study(4-10). Here, we created an approximation of a magnetic monopole in free space at the end of a long, nanoscopically thin magnetic needle(11). We experimentally demonstrate that the interaction of this approximate magnetic monopole field with a beam of electrons produces an electron vortex state, as theoretically predicted for a true magnetic monopole(3,11-18). This fundamental quantum mechanical scattering experiment is independent of the speed of the electrons and has consequences for all situations where electrons meet such monopole magnetic fields, as, for example, in solids. The set-up not only shows an attractive way to produce electron vortex states but also provides a unique insight into monopole fields and shows that electron vortices might well occur in unexplored solid-state physics situations. |

Abstract |
Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-delta (123) bulk superconductors have been synthesised by the oxygen controlled melt growth method. Unlike the YBaCuO system, platinum doping or Nd4Ba2Cu2O10 (422) rich compositions do not refine the peritectic '422' secondary phase, but the latter improves the microstructural quality. Low oxygen partial pressure and high purity precursors are necessary to achieve in a reproducible manner high T-c and J(c) (up to 56 000 A/cm(2) in 0T and 30 000 A/cm(2) under 1.5T). The fishtail effect observed at 77 K is compared with the one observed in the YBCO system, and is discussed in terms of oxygen deficiency, Nd-Ba substitution, defects and vortex lattice. Our TEM observations did not evidence any Nd-Ba substituted clusters in the Nd123 matrix; however, some diffuse streaks, observed in the [100] zone ED pattern, support the fact that the source of the peak effect in this system is mainly due to oxygen disorder and low stability of the orthorhombic phase. Abstract |
Near-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (NEXAFS)1 is an essential analytical tool in material science. Combining NEXAFS with scanning transmission X-ray microscopy (STXM) adds spatial resolution and the possibility to study individual nanostructures2, 3. Here, we describe a full-field transmission X-ray microscope (TXM) that generates high-resolution, large-area NEXAFS data with a collection rate two orders of magnitude faster than is possible with STXM. The TXM optical design combines a spectral resolution of E/ΔE = 1 × 104 with a spatial resolution of 25 nm in a field of view of 1520 µm and a data acquisition time of ~1 s. As an example, we present image stacks and polarization-dependent NEXAFS spectra from individual anisotropic sodium and protonated titanate nanoribbons. Our NEXAFS-TXM technique has the advantage that one image stack visualizes a large number of nanostructures and therefore already contains statistical information. This new high-resolution NEXAFS-TXM technique opens the way to advanced nanoscale science studies. |

Abstract |
A ''2222'' cuprate with mercury bilayers (Hg1.5Cu0.2Pr0.3)Ba2Pr2Cu2O10-delta, has been synthesized for the first time. It crystallizes in the P4/nmm space group with a = 3.9072(1) Angstrom and c = 17.219(1) Angstrom. The powder XRD and HREM studies of this new cuprate show that its structure consists of an intergrowth of double pyramidal (oxygen-deficient perovskite) copper layers, with double fluorite-type layers and distorted triple rock salt layers (mercury bilayers). The structure of this phase can be deduced from that of the ''2212'' mercury cuprate (Hg1.5Cu0.2Pr0.3)Ba2PrCu2O8-delta by the introduction of one additional [PrO2]infinity fluorite layer. The regular stacking of the metallic layer and the uniform cationic distribution in the mercury bilayers are remarkable features of this cuprate. The stabilization of the mercury bilayers by praseodymium and the absence of superconductivity are discussed. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc. |

Abstract |
Theranostic polymeric nanocarriers loaded with anticancer drug Taxol and superparamagnetic iron oxide nanocrystals have been developed for possible magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) use and cancer therapy. Multifunctional nanocarriers with a coreshell structure have been prepared by coating superparamagnetic Fe3O4 nanoparticles with block copolymer of poly(ethylene glycol)-b-poly(propylene succinate) with variable molecular weights of the hydrophobic block poly(prolylene succinate). The multifunctional polymer nano-vehicles were prepared using a nanoprecipitation method. Scanning transmission electron microscopy revealed the encapsulation of magnetic nanoparticles inside the polymeric matrix. Energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and electron energy loss spectroscopy mapping allowed us to determine the presence of the different material ingredients in a quantitative way. The diameter of the nanoparticles is below 250 nm yielding satisfactory encapsulation efficiency. The nanoparticles exhibit a biphasic drug release pattern in vitro over 15 days depending on the molecular weight of the hydrophobic part of the polymer matrix. These new systems where anti-cancer therapeutics like Taxol and iron oxide nanoparticles (IOs) are co-encapsulated into new facile polymeric nanoparticles, could be addressed as potential multifunctional vehicles for simultaneous drug delivery and targeting imaging as well as real time monitoring of therapeutic effects. |

Abstract |
CoFe2/CoFe2O4 bilayers were made by pulsed laser ablation of a CoFe2 target on Si(I 0 0) substrates. The metallic layer was deposited first, in vacuum. The oxide was then deposited in an oxidizing O-2:N-2 (20:80) atmosphere. Two different procedures were used for the introduction of the oxidizing atmosphere in the deposition chamber: the laser ablation of the target was either stopped (discontinuous deposition process) or maintained (continuous deposition process) during the 20 min necessary for the establishment of the desired O-2:N-2 pressure. In both cases, the different electronegativities of Fe and Co cause an important modification of the Fe/Co ratio at the metal/oxide interface, with a depletion of Fe in the metal region and of Co in the oxide region. In the continuous procedure, the combination of the kinetic energy given by the ablation process to the Fe and Co adatoms with the one they get from their different affinity towards oxidation allows the formation of a low roughness metal/oxide interface with a high (111) preferred orientation of the CoFe2O4 layer, an induced re-crystallisation of the metal layer underneath and an unusual antiferromagnetic metal/oxide magnetic coupling.
