Abstract: Thermophilic nitrification has been proven in lab-scale bioreactors at 50 °C. The challenge is now to develop a solution for thermophilic nitrogen removal, integrating nitrification with denitrification and aerobic carbon removal. This pioneering study aimed at a single-sludge nitrification/denitrification process at 50 °C, through exposing nitrification in a step by step approach to anoxia and/or organics. Firstly, recurrent anoxia was tolerated by a nitrifying community during long-term membrane bioreactor (MBR) operation (85 days), with high ammonium oxidation efficiencies (>98%). Secondly, five organic carbon sources did not affect thermophilic ammonium and nitrite oxidation rates in three-day aerobic batch flask incubations. Moving to long-term tests with sequencing batch reactors (SBR) and MBR (>250 days), good nitrification performance was obtained at increasing COD/Ninfluent ratios (0, 0.5, 1, 2 and 3). Thirdly, combining nitrification, recurrent anoxia and presence of organic carbon resulted in a nitrogen removal efficiency of 92–100%, with a COD/Nremoved of 4.8 ± 0.6 and a nitrogen removal rate of 50 ± 14 mg N g−1 VSS d−1. Overall, this is the first proof of principle thermophilic nitrifiers can cope with redox fluctuations (aerobic/anoxic) and the aerobic or anoxic presence of organic carbon, can functionally co-exist with heterotrophs and that single-sludge nitrification/denitrification can be achieved.

Abstract: Topochemical reduction of La0.9Ba0.1MnO3 with NaH at 225 degrees C yields the brownmillerite phase La0.9Ba0.1MnO2.5. However, reduction with CaH2 at 435 degrees C results in the formation of La0.9Ba0.1Mn0.96O2.43 via the deintercalation of both oxide anions and manganese cations from the parent perovskite phase. Electron and neutron diffraction data reveal La0.9Ba0.1Mn0.96O2.43 adopts a complex noncentrosymmetric structure, described in space group I23, confirmed by SHG measurements. Low-temperature neutron diffraction data reveal La0.9Ba0.1Mn0.96O2.43 adopts an ordered magnetic structure in which all the nearest neighbor interactions are antiferromagnetic. However, the presence of ordered manganese cation-vacancies results in a net ferrimagnetic structure with net saturated moment of 0.157(2) mu B per manganese center.

Abstract: The seasonal changes of a large set of atmospheric pollutants (i.e., gases, water-soluble aerosols, metallic/elemental components and black carbon (BC) content) have been studied over the southern bight of the North Sea (the Belgian Continental Shelf) and the English Channel during several marine sampling campaigns, carried out in 2010-2011. A coastal research station at De Haan, Belgium was concurrently used as a background air monitoring site. Size-segregated aerosols (PM1, PM2.5-1, PM10-2.5) were analyzed for particulate mass, elemental content and water-soluble (ionic) compounds, while the equivalent BC content in PM10 was monitored with an Aethalometer. The results clearly demonstrated that the aerosols originating from ship exhaust emissions contributed mostly to fine fraction (PM1), and to a lesser extent to medium-sized fraction (PM2.5-1), whereas components of sea spray and of mineral/soil origin were dominating in the medium-size and coarse aerosol fractions. Looking at seasonal differences, more ship emission related components occurred in the fine and medium-sized PM during winter. Mineral aerosol components were more apparent in coarse PM and especially during the cold season, increased levels were noted. Similarly, higher concentrations of marine fine PM were found during winter, likely due to more extensive ship emissions and/or calm weather conditions. Gaseous pollutants (e.g., HNO2, HNO3, HCl, SO2, NH3) originating from exhaust fumes of ocean-going ships mostly reached the maximum levels in the cold season as well, thus supporting the more intense formation of secondary aerosols. The seasonal trends of total (inorganic) ionic species sampled on the open sea and at the coastal station were usually similar to those of the corresponding PM masses, peaking in the cold season. Sea salt bound fine sulfate and nitrate peaked in spring or the cold season for marine areas, whereas for the coastal site they clearly reached the maximum in the cold season. Ammonium-bound nitrates and sulfates in each PM fraction reached their peak air levels in the cold season over marine sites. Similar seasonal trends could be observed for the coastal station. The general tendency of aerosol distribution over the study areas was independent of the sampling site: the higher the aerosol mass on the open sea with ship traffic, the higher the suspended particulate mass sampled at the coast.

Abstract: Lignite constitutes a unique testimony of past diversity and evolution of land plants. This material, usually waterlogged, is particularly difficult to dry because of its mechanical sensitivity to moisture changes. In addition, lignite may contain organic and inorganic sulfides, which are susceptible to oxidation once excavated. As a result, the conservation of lignite is particularly complicated and lignite remains scarce in paleobotanical collections. We experimentally test different drying protocols on waterlogged pyritized lignite, while documenting the respective role of water and oxygen on their morphology and chemistry. The results reveal that inorganic sulfides (pyrite) are more prone to oxidation than organic sulfides (thioethers). Critically, water is the main factor responsible for this oxidation, provoking sulfate efflorescence when samples are further exposed to oxygen. On the other hand, an abrupt removal of water provokes significant mechanical damage while sulfur remains mostly present as reduced compounds. The control of water and oxygen exchanges is thus critical for conserving lignite without physical damage and efflorescence. We successfully achieved this by storing the samples in hermetically sealed plastic bags made of semi-permeable films, which slowly release humidity while allowing a gradual influx of oxygen. We advise curators to quickly handle lignite once removed from its waterlogged environment because of the fast kinetics of oxidation, and to choose a drying protocol according to the purpose of the lignite treated. Abstract: This work encompasses an in-depth transmission electron microscopy and atom probe tomography study of Ti-stabilized austenitic steel irradiated with Fe-ions. The focus is on radiation induced segregation and precipitation, and in particular on how Ti and TiC affect these processes. A 15-15Ti steel (grade: DIN 1.4970) in two thermo-mechanical states (cold-worked and aged) was irradiated at different temperatures up to a dose of 40 dpa. At low irradiation temperatures, the cold-worked and aged materials evolved to a similar microstructure dominated by small Si and Ni clusters, corresponding to segregation to small point defect clusters. TiC precipitates, initially present in the aged material, were found to be unstable under these irradiation conditions. Elevated irradiation temperatures resulted in the nucleation of nanometer sized Cr enriched TiC precipitates surrounded by Si and Ni enriched shells. In addition, nanometer sized Ti- and Mn-enriched G-phase (M6Ni16Si7) precipitates formed, often attached to TiC precipitates. Post irradiation, larger number densities of TiC were observed in the cold-worked material compared to the aged material. This was correlated with a lower volume fraction of G-phase. The findings suggest that at elevated irradiation temperatures, the precipitate-matrix interface is an important point defect sink and contributes to the improved radiation resistance of this material. The study is a first of its kind on stabilized steel and demonstrates the significance of the small Ti addition to the evolution of the microstructure under irradiation. (C) 2020 Acta Materialia Inc. Abstract: We present the Tight-Binding Studio (TB Studio) software package that calculates the different parameters of a tight-binding Hamiltonian from a set of Bloch energy bands obtained from first principle theories such as density functional theory, Hartree-Fock calculations or semi-empirical band-structure theory. This will be helpful for scientists who are interested in studying electronic and optical properties of structures using Green's function theory within the tight-binding approximation. TB Studio is a cross-platform application written in C++ with a graphical user interface design that is user-friendly and easy to work with. This software is powered by Linear Algebra Package C interface library for solving the eigenvalue problems and the standard high performance OpenGL graphic library for real time plotting. TB Studio and its examples together with the tutorials are available for download from tight-binding.com. Abstract: Oriented trenches are created in h-BN using different catalysts, and used as templates to grow seamlessly integrated armchair and zigzag graphene nanoribbons with chirality-dependent electrical and magnetic conductance properties. The integrated in-plane growth of graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) and hexagonal boron nitride (h-BN) could provide a promising route to achieve integrated circuitry of atomic thickness. However, fabrication of edge-specific GNRs in the lattice of h-BN still remains a significant challenge. Here we developed a two-step growth method and successfully achieved sub-5-nm-wide zigzag and armchair GNRs embedded in h-BN. Further transport measurements reveal that the sub-7-nm-wide zigzag GNRs exhibit openings of the bandgap inversely proportional to their width, while narrow armchair GNRs exhibit some fluctuation in the bandgap-width relationship. An obvious conductance peak is observed in the transfer curves of 8- to 10-nm-wide zigzag GNRs, while it is absent in most armchair GNRs. Zigzag GNRs exhibit a small magnetic conductance, while armchair GNRs have much higher magnetic conductance values. This integrated lateral growth of edge-specific GNRs in h-BN provides a promising route to achieve intricate nanoscale circuits.

Abstract: This paper reports on the transition process to convert a specific lab technique to the on-site, real-life environment. Bringing a lab test to an on-site environment involves many difficulties regarding to the context, people skills and environmental support. Within this project, a case about sampling for an electrochemical measurement, was investigated as a basis to reason upon some general conclusions related to the process of transposing lab-tests to an on-site environment. The current lab test was analysed and compared with a focus group discussion with future users. Based on the findings, assumptions for the new sampling technique in the specific case were formulated. New low-tech methods to achieve the sampling were extensively tested and verified. Starting from this chosen case an argumentation was set up to generalise the conclusions, by reasoning on other cases of products that already passed this transition to the field. Based on a comparison, we could discuss that the selected parameters related to impact of the context environment, of the people that should handle the tests, related to the reasons for transposing the technology, and related to the technology that will be transposed to the on-site environment, were of importance of almost all cases and can therefore be considered as context-independent and related to the transfer to on-site testing.

Abstract: A method to prepare TEM specimens from metallic microwires and based on conventional twin-jet electropolishing is introduced. The wire is embedded in an opaque epoxy resin medium and the hardened resin is mechanically polished to reveal the wire on both sides. The resin containing wire is then cut into discs of the appropriate size. The obtained embedded wire is electropolished in a conventional twin-jet electropolishing machine until electron transparency in large areas without radiation damage is achieved.

Abstract: Cities with resilience to climate change appear to be a vision of the future, but are inevitable to ensure the quality of life for citizens and to avoid an increase in civilian mortality. Urban green infrastructure (UGI), with the focus on vertical green, poses a beneficial mitigation and adaptation strategy for challenges such as climate change through cooling effects on building and street level. This review article explores recent literature regarding this considerable topic and investigates how green walls can be applied to mitigate this problem. Summary tables (see additional information) and figures are presented that can be used by policy makers and researchers to make informed decisions when installing green walls in built-up environments. At last, knowledge gaps are uncovered that need further investigation to exploit the benefits at its best.

Abstract: Motivated by the recent synthesis of two-dimensional VI3 [Kong et al. Adv. Mater. 31, 1808074 (2019)], we investigate the effect of V doping on the magnetic and electronic properties of monolayer VI3 by means of first-principles calculations. The dynamically stable semiconducting ferromagnetic (FM) and antiferromagnetic (AFM) phases of monolayer VI3 are found to display distinctive vibrational features that the magnetic state can be distinguished by Raman spectroscopy. In order to clarify the effect of experimentally observed excessive V atoms, the magnetic and electronic properties of the V-doped VI3 structures are analyzed. Our findings indicate that partially doped VI3 structures display FM ground state while the fully-doped structure exhibits AFM ground state. The fully-doped monolayer VI3 is found to be a semiconductor with a relatively larger band gap than its pristine structure. In addition, strain-dependent electronic and magnetic properties of fully- and partially-doped VI3 structures reveal that pristine monolayer displays a FM-to-AFM phase transition with robust semiconducting nature for 5% of compressive strain, while fully-doped monolayer VI3 structure possesses AFM-to-FM semiconducting transition at tensile strains larger than 4%. In contrast, the partially-doped VI3 monolayers are found to display robust FM ground state under biaxial strain. Its dopant and strain tunable electronic and magnetic nature makes monolayer VI3 a promising material for applications in nanoscale spintronic devices.

Abstract: In this work, we employed first-principles density functional theory (DFT) calculations to investigate the dynamical and thermal stability of graphene-like ZnX (X = N, P, As) nanosheets. We moreover analyzed the electronic, mechanical and optical properties of these novel two-dimensional (2D) systems. Acquired phonon dispersion relations reveal the absence of imaginary frequencies and thus confirming the dynamical stability of predicted monolayers. According to ab-initio molecular dynamics results however only ZnN and ZnP exhibit the required thermally stability. The elastic modulus of ZnN, ZnP and ZnAs are estimated to be 31, 21 and 17 N/m, respectively, and the corresponding tensile strengths values are 6.0, 4.9 and 4.0 N/m, respectively. Electronic band structure analysis confirms the metallic electronic character for the predicted monolayers. Results for the optical characteristics also indicate a reflectivity of 100% at extremely low energy levels, which is desirable for photonic and optoelectronic applications. According to our results, graphene-like ZnN and ZnP nanosheets can yield high capacities of 675 and 556 mAh/g for Li-ion storage, respectively. Acquired results confirm the stability and acceptable strength of ZnN and ZnP nanosheets and highlight their attractive application prospects in optical and energy storage systems.

Abstract: The demand for higher throughput in the processing of materials with ultra-short pulsed lasers has motivated studies on the use of double pulses (DP). It has been observed in such studies that at relatively high time delays between the two pulses, the ablated volume is lower than that for a single pulse (SP). This has been attributed to the shielding of the second pulse and the re-deposition of the material removed by the first pulse. The investigation of re-deposition in copper with the aid of atomistic simulations is the main objective of this study. Nevertheless, a computational investigation of SP-ablation and experimental measurement of the SP-ablation depths and threshold fluence are also covered. The applied computational apparatus comprises a combination of molecular dynamics with the two-temperature model and the Helmholtz wave equation. The analysis of the simulation results shows that the derived quantities like the SP-ablation threshold fluence and the ratio of DP ablation depth to SP-ablation depth are in agreement with the experimental values. An important finding of this study is that the characteristics of the re-deposition process are highly dependent on the fluence.
