Abstract |
Understanding the perspectives of different stakeholders on emerging technological concepts is an important step towards their implementation. Enhanced Landfill Mining (ELFM) is one of these emerging concepts. It aims at valorizing past waste streams to higher added values in a sustainable manner. Yet, assessment of ELFM mainly focusses on environmental and private economic issues, and societal impacts are rarely analyzed. This study uses semi-structured interviews to build understanding for different ELFM practitioners and researchers and develops five stakeholder archetypes for ELFM implementation: the Engaged Citizen, the Entrepreneur, the Technology Enthusiast, the Visionary and the Skeptic. The archetypes outline major differences in approaching ELFM implementation. The stakeholder perceptions are put into context with existing literature, and implications for ELFM implementation and future research are discussed. Results show that differences in regulatory changes and technology choices are affected by different stakeholder perspectives and more research is needed to balance inner- and inter-dimensional conflicts of ELFM's sustainability. The developed archetypes can especially be helpful when evaluating social impacts, whose perception often depends on opinion and is difficult to quantify. |

Abstract |
As landfill mining (LFM) gains public attention, systematic assessment of its economic potential is deemed necessary. The aim of this review is to critically analyze the usefulness and validity of previous economic assessments of LFM. Following the life cycle costing (LCC) framework, (i) the employed methods based on goal and scope, technical parameters and data inventory, and modelling choices were contrasted with respect to (ii) the synthesized main findings based on net profitability and economic performance drivers. Results showed that the selected studies (n=15) are mostly case study-specific and concluded that LFM has a weak economic potential, hinting at the importance of favorable market and regulation settings. However, several method issues are apparent as costs and revenues are accounted at different levels of aggregation, scope and scale-from process to sub-process level, from private to societal economics, and from laboratory to pilot-scale, respectively. Moreover, despite the inherent large uncertainties, more than half of the studies did not perform any uncertainty or sensitivity analyses posing validity issues. Consequently, this also limits the usefulness of results as individual case studies and as a collective, towards a generic understanding of LFM economics. Irrespective of case study-specific or generic aims, this review recommends that future assessments should be learning-oriented. That is, uncovering granular information about what builds up the net profitability of LFM, to be able to systematically determine promising paths for the development of cost-efficient projects. |

Abstract |
In this paper, the effect of BC3, C3N and C3N4BC(3) and MoS2/C(3)N4 heterostructures are direct semiconductors with band gaps of 0.4 and 1.74 eV, respectively, while MoS2/C3N is a metal. Furthermore, the influence of strain and electric field on the electronic structure of these van der Waals heterostructures is investigated. The MoS2/BC3 heterostructure, for strains larger than -4%, transforms it into a metal where the metallic character is maintained for strains larger than -6%. The band gap decreases with increasing strain to 0.35 eV (at +2%), while for strain (>+6%) a direct-indirect band gap transition is predicted to occur. For the MoS2/C3N heterostructure, the metallic character persists for all strains considered. On applying an electric field, the electronic properties of MoS2/C3N4 are modified and its band gap decreases as the electric field increases. Interestingly, the band gap reaches 30 meV at +0.8 V/angstrom, and with increase above +0.8 V/angstrom, a semiconductor-to-metal transition occurs. Furthermore, we investigated effects of semi- and full-hydrogenation of MoS2/C3N and we found that it leads to a metallic and semiconducting character, respectively. |

Abstract |
This study focuses on the water-soluble ion concentrations in the washing solution of leaves of different roadside tree species at three sites in Iran to estimate the ionic composition of the dry deposition of ambient air particulates. All considered water-soluble ion concentrations were significantly higher next to the roads with high traffic density compared to the reference site with low traffic density. The PCA results showed that Ca2+, Mg2+, and originated mainly from traffic activities and geological sources, and Na+, Cl-, K+ and F- from sea salts. In addition to sea salt, K+ and F- were also originated from anthropogenic sources i.e. industrial activities, biomass burning and fluorite mining. Moreover, the concentration of the water-soluble ions depended on species and site. C. lawsoniana had significantly higher ion concentrations in its leaf washing solution compared to L. japonicum and P. brutia which indicates C. lawsoniana is the most suitable species for accumulating of atmospheric dry deposition. From our results, it can be concluded that sites with similar traffic density can have different particle loads and water-soluble ion species, and that concentrations in leaf-washing solutions depend on site conditions and species-specific leaf surface characteristics. |

Abstract |
This dataset comprises a large collection of atom probe tomography datasets collected from DIN 1.4970 alloy that was irradiated with Fe ions at different conditions. The DIN 1.4970 alloy is an austenitic stainless steel with 15 wt% Cr, 15 wt% Ni, a small addition of Ti. The full composition and characterization of our material can be found published elsewhere [1,2]. Some of our material was subjected to ageing heat treatments at different temperatures for different times. Small samples of our original material and aged material was irradiated at the Michigan Ion Beam Laboratory in 2017 with 4.5 MeV Fe ions up to 40 dpa at an average dose rate of 2×10−4 dpa/s. This was done at three different temperatures: 300, 450, and 600 ºC. Atom probe samples were made of the irradiated layers (approximately 1.5 micron deep) with focused ion beam and mounted on Microtip coupons. APT measurements took place on three CAMECA LEAP-HR systems located at CAES in Idaho Falls, USA (files beginning with R33), at Montanuniversität Leoben in Leoben, Austria (R21) and at Friedrich–Alexander University in Erlangen, Germany (R56). |

Abstract |
Hydroxyapatite (HAP) is frequently used as biocompatible coating on Ti-based implants. In this context, the HAP-Ti adhesion is of crucial importance. Here, we report ab initio calculations to investigate the influence of Si incorporation into the amorphous calcium-phosphate (a-HAP) structure on the interfacial bonding mechanism between the a-HAP coating and an amorphous titanium dioxide (a-TiO2) substrate, contrasting two different density functionals: PBE-GGA, and DFT-D3, which are capable of describing the influence of the van der Waals (vdW) interactions. In particular, we discuss the effect of dispersion on the work of adhesion (W-ad), equilibrium geometries, and charge density difference (CDD). We find that replacement of P by Si in a-HAP (a-Si-HAP) with the creation of OH vacancies as charge compensation results in a significant increase in the bond strength between the coating and substrate in the case of using the PBE-GGA functional. However, including the vdW interactions shows that these forces considerably contribute to the W-ad. We show that the difference (W-ad – W-ad(vdW)) is on average more than 1.1 J m(-2) and 0.5 J m(-2) for a-HAP/a-TiO2 and a-Si-HAP/a-TiO2, respectively. These results reveal that including vdW interactions is essential for accurately describing the chemical bonding at the a-HAP/a-TiO2 interface. |

Abstract |
In the present work, kelvin probe force microscopy (KPFM) technique has been used to study the CZTSe/CuxSe bilayer interface prepared by multi-step deposition and selenization process of metal precursors. Transmission electron microscopy (TEM) confirmed the bilayer configuration of the CZTSe/CuxSe sample. Two configuration modes (surface mode and junction mode) in KPFM have been employed in order to measure the junction voltage under illumination conditions. The results show that CZTSe/CuxSe has small junction voltage of similar to 21 mV and the presence of CuxSe secondary phase in the CZTSe grain boundaries changes the workfunction of the local grain boundaries region. The negligible photovoltage difference between grain and grain boundaries in photovoltage image indicates that CuxSe phase deteriorates the higher photovoltage at grain boundaries normally observed in CZTSe based device. These results can be important for understanding the role of secondary phases in CZTSe based junction devices. |

Abstract |
Starting from logarithmic, sinusoidal and power spirals, it is shown how these spirals are connected directly with Chebyshev polynomials, Lamé curves, with allometry and Antonelli-metrics in Finsler geometry. Curvature is a crucial concept in geometry both for closed curves and equiangular spirals, and allowed Dillen to give a general definition of spirals. Many natural shapes can be described as a combination of one of two basic shapes in nature—circle and spiral—with Gielis transformations. Using this idea, shape description itself is used to develop a novel approach to anisotropic curvature in nature. Various examples are discussed, including fusion in flowers and its connection to the recently described pseudo-Chebyshev functions. |

Abstract |
Within the heritage field, the application of strain gauges on wood surfaces is a little-explored but inexpensive and effective method to analyse the environmental appropriateness of rooms for the wooden heritage collections they contain. This contribution proposes a wood sensor connected to a data logger to identify short moments with an elevated risk of harm. Two experiments were performed to obtain insights pertaining to the applicability of wood sensors to evaluate preservation conditions. (1) The representativeness of strain gauges on dummies was tested for their use in evaluating the preservation conditions of a range of wooden objects exposed to the same environment. For this, three situations were mimicked: a bare wood surface, a wood surface covered with a preparation layer, and a wood surface covered with a preparation and varnish layer. (2) The usability of strain gauges to monitor the wood behaviour in real-time measurements was tested with a monitoring campaign of almost two years in a church where a new heating system was installed. The results of both experiments are promising, and the authors encourage a broader application of strain gauges in the heritage field. |

Abstract |
Traditionally, direct imaging of atom diffusion is only available by scanning tunneling microscopy and field ion microscopy on geometry-constrained samples: flat surfaces for STM and needle tips for FIM. Here we show time-resolved atomic-scale HRTEM investigations of CeO2-supported Au nanoparticle surfaces to characterize the surface dynamics of atom columns on gold nanoparticles. The observed surface dynamics have been categorized into four types: layer jumping, layer gliding, re-orientation and surface reconstruction. We successfully captured atoms moving in a concerted manner with a time resolution of 0.1 s. A quantitative approach for measuring the dynamics in various gaseous surroundings at elevated temperatures is presented. An approach for measuring quantitative electron beam effects on the surface dynamics is presented by counting atom column occupation as a function of time under a range of dose rates in high vacuum. |
