Abstract: A uniform ground-state three-dimensional Fermi gas with short-range repulsive pairwise interaction is under consideration. Its kinetic and interaction energies are calculated up to the second order of the expansion in the gas parameter. Similar to recent results for an interacting Bose gas, the quantities in question are found to depend on the pairwise interaction through two characteristic lengths: the former, a, is the s-wave scattering length, and the latter, b, is related to a by b=a-m(partial derivativea/partial derivativem), where m stands for the fermion mass. To control the results, we proceed in two independent ways. The first involves the Hellmann-Feynman theorem applied to derive the kinetic and interaction energies from the total-energy expansion in the gas parameter first found by Huang and Yang. The second way operates with in-medium pair wave functions and allows one to calculate the quantities of interest “from scratch.” The results of the present investigation, taken together with those of the recent consideration of a dilute Bose gas, make it possible to conclude that the pairwise interaction in a quantum gas has an essential and nontrivial effect on the kinetic energy, which is not the case for a classical many-particle system.

Abstract: Electron energy loss spectroscopy was used to investigate the bonding of plasma deposited carbon films. The experimental conditions include the use of a specific collection angle for which the shape of the spectra is free of the orientation dependency usually encountered in graphite due to its anisotropic structure. The first quantification process of the energy loss near-edge structure was performed by a standard fit of the collected spectrum, corrected for background and multiple scattering, with three Gaussian functions followed by a comparison with the graphite spectrum obtained under equivalent experimental conditions. In a second approach a fitting model directly incorporating the background subtraction and multiple scattering removal was applied. The final numerical results are interpreted in view of the deposition conditions of the films and the actual fitting procedure with the related choice of parameters.

Abstract: Quantum mechanical coupling and strain in two vertically arranged InP/InGaP quantum dots is studied as a function of the size of the dots and the spacer thickness. The strain distribution is determined by the continuum mechanical model, while the single-band effective-mass equation and the multiband k (.) p theory are employed to compute the conduction and valence band energy levels, respectively. The exciton states are obtained from an exact diagonalization approach, and we also compute the oscillator strength for recombination. We found that the light holes are confined by strain to the spacer, which is the reason that the hole states exhibit coupling at much larger distances as compared with the electrons. At small d, the doublet structure of the hole energy levels arises as a consequence of the relocation of the light hole from the matrix to the regions located-outside the stack, close to the dot-matrix interface. When d varies, the exciton ground state exhibits numerous anticrossings with other states, which are related to the changing spatial localization of the hole as a function of d. The oscillator strength of the exciton recombination is strongly reduced in a certain range of spacer thicknesses, which effectively turns a bright exciton state into a dark one. This effect is associated with anticrossings between exciton energy levels.

Abstract: The temperature-dependent giant magnetoresistance effect is investigated in a magnetically modulated two-dimensional electron gas, which can be realized by depositing two parallel ferromagnets on the top and bottom of a heterostructure. The effective potential for electrons arising for parallel magnetization allows the electrons to resonantly tunnel through the magnetic barriers, while this is excluded in the anti-parallel situation. Such a discrepancy results in a giant magnetoresistance ratio (MRR), which can be up to 10(31)%. The MRR shows a strong dependence on temperature, but our study indicates that for realistic parameters for a GaAs heterostructure the effect can be as high as 10(4)% at 4 K.

Abstract: Organic carbocyanine dye coatings have been analyzed by time-of-flight static secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-S-SIMS) using three types of primary ions: Ga+ operating at 25 keV, and Xe+ and SF5+ both operating at 9 keV. Secondary ion yields obtained with these three primary ions have been compared for coatings with different layer thickness, varying from (sub)-monolayer to multilayers, on different substrates (Si, Ag and AgBr cubic microcrystals). For (sub)-monolayers deposited on Ag, Xe+ and SF5+ primary ions generate similar precursor ion intensities, but with Ga+ slightly lower precursor ion intensities were obtained. Thick coatings on Ag as well as mono- and multilayers on Si produce the highest precursor and fragment ion intensities with the polyatomic primary ion. The yield difference between SF5+ and Xe+ can reach a factor of 6. In comparison with Ga+, yield enhancements by up to a factor of 180 are observed with SF5+. For the mass spectrometric analysis of dye layers on AgBr microcrystals, SF5+ again proves to be the primary ion of choice. Copyright (C) 2004 John Wiley Sons, Ltd.

Abstract: On the basis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equation we studied the dynamics of the superconducting condensate in a wide two-dimensional sample in the presence of a perpendicular magnetic field and applied current. We could identify two critical currents: the current at which the pure superconducting state becomes unstable (J(c2)(1)) and the current at which the system transits from the resistive state to the superconducting state (J(c1) < J(c2)). The current J(c2) decreases monotonically with external magnetic field, while J(c1) exhibits a maximum at H*. For sufficient large magnetic fields the hysteresis disappears and J(c1) = J(c2) = Jc. In this high magnetic field region and for currents close to Jc the voltage appears as a result of the motion of separate vortices. With increasing current the moving vortices form, channels' with suppressed order parameter along which the vortices can move very fast. This leads to a sharp increase of the voltage. These 'channels' resemble in some respect the phase slip lines which occur at zero magnetic field. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: We report the complete disappearance of the structural modulation in heavily lead-doped Bi2-xPbxSr2CaCu2O8+delta crystals observed by transmission electron microscopy. Crystals with a nominal lead content of x = 0.8, corresponding to an effective lead content of x = 0.39, yield the non-modulated phase. The superconducting properties of this modulation-free phase (beta phase) have been studied and compared to those of undoped crystals displaying the modulated phase (alpha phase). Magnetisation measurements reveal that the irreversibility field H-irr(T) and relaxation rates are strongly improved within the beta phase. Measurements of the lower critical field, H-cl, show that the anisotropy factor, E, is considerably reduced in the modulation-free crystals. This is the signature of stronger coupling between CuO2 layers which in turn deeply influences the effectiveness of the pinning. These measurements explain the enhanced pinning properties in moderately Pb-doped crystals in which the a phase and P phase coexist. The enhanced pinning is not only due to the alpha/beta interfaces, which act as effective pinning centers: the emergence of modulation-free domains, characterized by a strongly reduced anisotropy, also significantly contribute to this effect. Abstract: The stable and metastable states of different configurations of a mesoscopic loop in the form of an eight is studied in the presence of a magnetic field. We find that for certain configurations the current is equal to zero for any value of the magnetic field leading to a magnetic field independent superconducting state. The state with fixed phase circulation becomes unstable when the momentum of the superconducting electrons reaches a critical value. At this moment the kinetic energy of the superconducting condensate becomes of the same order as the potential energy of the Cooper pairs and it leads to an instability. Numerical analysis of the time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau equations shows that the absolute value of the order parameter changes gradually at the transition from a state with one phase circulation to another although the vorticity change occurs abruptly.
