Abstract |
The melting transition of the five different lattices of a bilayer crystal is studied using the Monte-Carlo (MC) technique. We found the surprising result that the square lattice has a substantial larger melting temperature as compared to the other lattice structures, which is a consequence of the specific topology of the temperature induced defects. A new melting criterion is formulated which we show to be universal for bilayers as well as for single layer crystals. |

Abstract |
The present paper gives a review of results of recent studies investigating the fundamentals of the martensitic and related phase transformations in Ni-Al. For the former case, the emphasis will be on the microstructure of martensite plates. The latter include the metastable Ni2Al omega-like and stable Ni5Al3 bainitic phases. These phases will be discussed in view of their atomic structure, nucleation, growth and effect on the martensitic transformation. A separate chapter will deal with precursor effects. |

Abstract |
Microstructural investigations with transmission electron microscopy were carried out on quenched Ni-Ti alloys with 52 and 54.5 at% Ni. For the Ni52Ti48 specimen long time exposed diffraction patterns of a single grain show besides the expected reflections of the B2-phase, two sets of extra reflections in different zones. The first type of spots is explained by lattice displacement waves, which are regarded as precursors of the martensitic Ni-Ti phases, B 19' and R-phase, respectively. The second set of reflection with more diffuse intensity than the other reflections is related to Ni4Ti3 precipitates in an early state of formation. For the Ni-richer Ni54.5Ti45.5 alloy only Ni4Ti3 precipitates in an early state of formation are found but no precursors of the B 19'- and R-phase. |

Abstract |
The nucleation and growth mechanisms of Ni5Al3 precipitates and microtwinned plates in B2 austenite and 2M (3R) martensite phases are described on the basis of conventional and high resolution electron microscopy. In the Ni62.5Al37.5 B2 austenite matrix short annealings at 550 degrees C introduce three-pointed star shaped precipitates consisting of twin related parts of different variants of the Ni5Al3 structure. Longer annealings result in plates growing separately from these wings and developing microtwinning in order to accommodate stress built-up at the interfaces with the surrounding matrix. Annealing of Ni65Al35 2M martensite plates induces simple reordering into the Ni5Al3 phase, increasing the fct c/a ratio by about 1%. As a result stracking faults are introduced in the smallest twin variants. |

Abstract |
We measured the electrical resistivity R(T) and specific heat C-p(T) between room temperature (RT) and 4.2 K as well as the microstructure by transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of a Ni-52 Ti-48 SMA quenched from 1000degreesC (B2-Phase range) to RT and then annealed for 1h at T=380degreesC, 550degreesC and 650degreesC. In the “as quenched” and the “650degreesC annealed” state no martensitic transformations (MT's) occur. The diffraction patterns show faint reflections originating from coherent Ni4Ti3 precipitates in an early state of formation. Additional reflections of the type 1/2 <110>, 1/2 <111> and 1/3 <110> result from various lattice displacement waves, which are precursors of the MT's to the B19' and R-phase, respectively. Indeed, high resolution TEM micrographs of the [001] zone of the “as quenched” sample reveal transverse 1/2 <110> <110> lattice displacement waves, precursors of the B19' martensite. The coherent Ni4Ti3 precipitates, homogeneously distributed on a small length scale, binder the MT's in the “as quenched” and the “650degreesC annealed” state, and thus only the precursors appear. When annealed at T=380degreesC, however, coherent Ni4Ti3 precipitates with a length of 10nm are clearly visible in TEM. These precipitates trigger the NIT from the B2 to the R-phase on cooling, as evidenced also by anomalies in R(T) and C-p(T). Annealing at T-550degreesC leads to the well known two step MT's from the B2 to the R-phase and then into the B19'-phase. These martensitic transitions are clearly seen as additional peaks in the specific heat and anomalies in the resistance, while the “as quenched” and 650degreesC annealed samples show weak features in R(T) and C-p(T). |

Abstract |
A model for superstructure ordering in the <<chain>> layers of Ga (Co) substituted YBCO intergrowths with general formula (REO2)NSr2MCu2O5 (M = Co, Ga; n = 1, 2, ...) is proposed. By Ga or Co substitution for Cu, the structure of the <<chain>> layer changes : instead of the CuO4 planar squares, the chains consist of MO4 tetrahedra (M = Ga, Co) running along the [110] perovskite direction. The existing model for the Ga substituted <<123>> implies that all the chains are the same. Our new model is based on the results of Electron diffraction and High-resolution electron microscopy investigations. The model reveals the occurrence of two types of chains as a consequence of <<opposite>> ordering between neighbouring tetrahedra. The comer linked tetrahedra in each chain appear as alternatingly rotated in opposite sense, and a chain itself, as being displaced with respect to the underlying structure in one of two senses ; either forth (right) or back (left) along the chain direction. The regular alternation of chains of opposite type doubles the periodicity within a layer and induces the possibility for intrinsic disorder in the chain layer stacking sequence. The planar superstructure and a staggered stacking of the tetrahedral chain layers is found irrespective of the rest of the intergrowth structure. Superstructure ordering in the case of Co substitution is more perfect than for the Ga substitution. |

Abstract |
Recently discovered series of high Tc superconductors, characterized by the existence of two types of cations within the same layer, are presented. The first family concerns the mercury based cuprates, Hg(1-x)M(x)A(2)Ca(m-1)Cu(m)O(2m+2+delta), with A = Ba and/or Sr, which exhibit structures closely related to that of the thallium cuprates TlBa2Cam-1CumO2m+3. They differ from the thallium cuprates by a high oxygen deficiency at the level of the mercury layer. It is shown that cations such as M = Cu, Pb, Tl, Bi, Ce, Pr, Cr, V, Mo, W, Ti, Sr, Ca,... can partially substitute for mercury ions, stabilizing the structures. The cationic composition of the layer depends indeed on the nature of the M cation but also on that of the alkaline earth A. For given A and M cations, the a: value remains unchanged even when the number of copper layers varies. M and Hg cations are either statistically distributed over the same site or ordered. Different types of ordering have been detected. Another way of generating mixed layers is to shear periodically the structure, leading to the formation of the so called ''collapsed phase''. In the collapsed bismuth cuprates, bismuth and copper segments, a few octahedra long, alternate in strongly waving layers. In the collapsed oxycarbonates, carbonate groups and M cations are ordered within the intermediate layer so that they can be simply described from a partial and ordered substitution of carbon for Hg,TI, Bi and other M cations building the intermediate layer. The oxycarbonitrates (Y1-xCax)(n)Ba2nCu3n-1(C,N)O3O7n-3 can also be described as an ordered substitution of carbon for copper in the 123 matrix. The different families of superconducting materials which are generated by such mechanisms are described as well as the way the different species are distributed within the mixed layers. Their influence on the physical properties are discussed. |

Abstract |
IWW-type zeolite with Si/Ge of 4.9 is obtained using 5-azonia-spiro[4,4]nonane as template in fluoride-free medium under hydrothermal conditions at 175 °C. In an otherwise identical synthesis, using the related 5-azonia-spiro[4,5]decane as structure directing agent, a mixture of IWW and NON zeolite types was formed. In absence of GeO2 from the reactant mixture, pure NON formed. The IWW zeolite was characterized by XRD, SEM, and HRTEM. IWW zeolite displayed a unique morphology and could be calcined at 600 °C without loss of crystallinity. The Si/Ge ratio of the IWW zeolite was increased by postsynthesis modification. Part of the germanium could be eliminated from the as-synthesized IWW zeolite by acid leaching using 6 M HCl solution. Also the calcined material could be degermanated. Here the presence of a silicon source in the acidic leaching solution minimized structural damage. This way the Si/Ge ratio of the IWW zeolite was increased from 4.9 up to 10. |

Abstract |
Novel synthetic protocols based on both template and multi-step methods were developed for phenyl-substituted pyrazinoporphyrazine complexes of rare-earth elements (Y, Eu, Gd, Dy, Er and Lu). p-Hydroquinone was employed as a reaction medium and as a reducing agent in the process of porphyrazine macrocycle formation. Both thermal and microwave irradiation techniques were successfully applied for activation of the template macrocyclization process. An alternative multi-step approach involving the initial stage of free-base ligand formation was realized for the lutetium compound. The target complexes were identified by high-resolution mass spectrometry, infrared spectroscopy and nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Electrochemical behavior in solution and UV-vis absorbance in solutions and films were studied as well. Shifts in the position of the Q band and oxidationreduction potentials in comparison with corresponding phthalocyanine analogues were noticed. Using the IR absorption spectra recorded in the temperature range of 170300 K, the position of the Fermi level of −4.7 ± 0.1 eV and a characteristic energy diagram were obtained for the erbium complex. |

Abstract |
In this work, we investigated systematically the electronic and optical properties of B doped C3N monolayers as well as B and N doped graphene bilayers (BN-Gr@2L). We found that the doping of B atoms leads to an enlarged band gap of the C3N monolayer and when the dopant concentration reaches 12.5%, an indirect-to-direct band gap switching occurs. In addition, with co-doping of B and N atoms on the graphene monolayer in the hexagonal configuration, an electronic transition from semi-metal to semiconductor occurs. Our optical results for B-C3N show a broad absorption spectrum in a wide visible range starting from 400 nm to 1000 nm with strong absorption intensity, making it a suitable candidate for nanoelectronic and optoelectronic applications. Interestingly, a transition from semi-metal to semiconductor emerges in the graphene monolayer with doping of B and N atoms. Furthermore, our results demonstrate that the in-plane strain and out-of-plane strain (pressure) can modulate the band gap of the BN-Gr@2L. The controllable electronic properties and optical features of the doped graphene bilayer by strain engineering may facilitate their practical performance for various applications in future. |
