“A novel red Ca8.5Pb0.5Eu(PO4)7 phosphor for light emitting diodes application”. Deyneko DV, Morozov VA, Hadermann J, Savon AE, Spassky DA, Stefanovich SY, Belik AA, Lazoryak BI, Journal of alloys and compounds 647, 965 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jallcom.2015.06.123
Abstract: Ca9-xPbxEu(PO4)(7) (0 <= x <= 1) solid solutions with a whitlockite-type (or beta-Ca-3(PO4)(2)-type) structure (sp.gr. R3c) were prepared by a standard solid-state method in air. Their luminescent properties under near-ultraviolet (n-UV) light were investigated. Excitation spectra of Ca9-xPbxEu(PO4)(7) showed the strongest absorption at about 395 nm, which matches well with commercially available n-UV-emitting GaN-based LED chips. Emission spectra indicated an intense red emission due to the D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition of Eu3+, with a maximum in the intensity for Ca8.5Pb0.5Eu(PO4)(7). The emission intensity of Ca8.5Pb0.5Eu(PO4)(7) was about 1.8 times higher than that of a Ca9Eu(PO4)(7) phosphor. We suggest that the introduction of Pb2+ is an efficient approach to enhance luminescence properties of such phosphors. We clarified the influence of the Ca2+/Pb2+ substitution on intensities of three bands for the D-5(0) -> F-7(0) transition in excitation spectra of Ca9-xPbxEu(PO4)(7). In addition, we found a reversible first-order phase transition from R3c to R (3) over barc symmetry by second-harmonic generation in the range from 753 K (x = 1) to 846 K (x = 0). “Structure and magnetic properties of Sm(Fe,Si)(9)C/alpha-Fe nanocomposite magnets”. Bez R, Zehani K, Batuk M, Van Tendeloo G, Mliki N, Bessais L, Journal of alloys and compounds 695, 810 (2017). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.JALLCOM.2016.10.122
Abstract: SmFe8.75 Si-0.25 C/alpha-Fe nanocomposites have been successfully synthesized using high energy milling, followed by annealing at 750 degrees C. The crystal structure of these compounds was characterized by the Rietveld method using powder X-ray diffraction data. By increasing the concentration of Sm, we observed a decrease in the amount of alpha-Fe phase. The morphology of the samples was determined by scanning and transmission electron microscopy. The average grain size is about 20 nm. The magnetic properties were investigated at room temperature and at 10 K. A ferromagnetic behavior was observed in all samples at both temperatures. An increase of the soft magnetic phase alpha-Fe induced an increase in the magnetization and a decrease in coercivity. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

“Effect of cation vacancies on the crystal structure and luminescent properties of Ca(0.85-1.5x)Gd(x)Eu(0.1)_(0.05+0.5x)WO(4) (0<x<0.567) scheelite-based red phosphors”. Batuk D, Batuk M, Morozov VA, Meert KW, Smet PF, Poelman D, Abakumov AM, Hadermann J, Journal of alloys and compounds 706, 358 (2017). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jallcom.2017.02.154
Abstract: The Ca0.85-1.5xGdxEu0.1_0.05-0.5xWO4 (0 < x < 0.567) series of cation-deficient scheelites is investigated to unveil the influence of the cation vacancies on the crystal structure and luminescent properties. The concentration of the vacancies is varied by the heterovalent substitution of Gd3+ for Ca2+, keeping the concentration of the Eu3+ luminescent centers constant in all compounds of the series. The crystal structure of the materials is studied using a combination of transmission electron microscopy and synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction. At low vacancy concentration (x = 0.1, 0.2), cations and cation vacancies are randomly distributed in the structure, and the materials preserve the I41/a symmetry of the parent scheelite structure [x = 0.1: a = 5.25151(1) Å, c = 11.39479(2) Å; x = 0.2: a = 5.25042(1) Å, c = 11.41335(2) Å]. At higher concentration, the cation-vacancy ordering gives rise to incommensurately modulated structures. The x = 0.3 structure has a (3 + 2)D tetragonal symmetry [superspace group I41/a(a,b,0)00(-b,a,0)00, a = 5.24700(1) Å, c = 11.45514(3) Å, q1 = 0.51637(14)a* + 0.80761(13)b*, q2 = -0.80761a* + 0.51637b*]. At x = 0.4, the scheelite basic cell undergoes a monoclinic distortion with the formation of the (3 + 1)D structure [superspace group I2/b(a,b,0)00, a = 5.23757(1) Å, b = 5.25035(1) Å, c = 11.45750(2) Å, g = 90.5120(2) o, q = 0.54206(8)a* + 0.79330(8)b*]. In both structures, the antiphase Ca and (Gd,Eu) occupancy modulations indicate that the ordering between the A cations and vacancies also induces partial Ca/(Gd,Eu) cation ordering. Further increase of the Gd3þ content up to x = 0.567 leads to the formation of a monoclinic phase (space group C2/c) with the Eu2/3WO4-type structure. Despite the difference in the cation-vacancy ordering patterns, all materials in the series demonstrate very similar quantum efficiency and luminescence decay lifetimes. However, the difference in the local coordination environment of the A cation species noticeably affects the line width and the multiplet splitting of the 4f6-4f6 transitions.

“Cobalt location in p -CoO x / n -SnO 2 nanocomposites: Correlation with gas sensor performances”. Abstract: Nanocomposites CoOx/SnO2 based on tin oxide powders with different crystallinity have been prepared by wet chemical synthesis and characterized in detail by ICP-MS, XPS, EPR, XRD, HAADF-STEM imaging and EDX-STEM mapping. It was shown that cobalt is distributed differently between the bulk and surface of SnO2 nanocrystals, which depends on the crystallinity of the SnO2 matrix. The measurements of gas sensor properties have been carried out during exposure to CO (10 ppm), and H2S (2 ppm) in dry air. The decrease of sensor signal toward CO was attributed to high catalytic activity of Co3O4 leading to oxidation of carbon monoxide entirely on the surface of catalyst particles. The formation of a p-CoOx/n-SnO2 heterojunction results in high sensitivity of nanocomposites in H2S detection. The conductance significantly changed in the presence of H2S, which was attributed to the formation of metallic cobalt sulfide and removal of the p – n junction.

“The multiple orientation relationships and morphology of beta phase in Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy”. Weng Y, Jia Z, Ding L, Muraishi S, Wu X, Liu Q, Journal of alloys and compounds 767, 81 (2018). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.JALLCOM.2018.07.077
Abstract: The orientation relationships (ORs), segregation behavior and morphologies of beta precipitate in an over aged Al-Mg-Si-Cu alloy are systematically characterized by atomic resolution high-angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM). Six different ORs and two morphologies, i.e. rod-and lath-like are revealed for beta precipitates, and Cu segregation at the (beta/alpha-Al interface is observed in all these precipitates. The rod-like beta precipitate has multiple beta-angles ranging from 6.1 to 14.1 degrees and non-uniform Cu segregation at the (beta/alpha-Al interface, while the lath-like beta precipitate has a constant beta-angle of 0 degrees and a periodic Cu segregation. These different ORs are explained to be attributable to the rotation of QP lattice, a near-hexagonal network of Si columns formed within beta precipitates, which causes different lattice matching of beta with alpha-Al lattice. These findings provide new insights in controlling the precipitation hardening and mechanical properties of this type of alloys. (C) 2018 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

“Synthesis of monodispersed CoMoO4 nanoclusters on the ordered mesoporous carbons for environment-friendly supercapacitors”. Li J, Zhao C, Yang Y, Li C, Hollenkamp T, Burke N, Hu Z-Y, Van Tendeloo G, Chen W, Journal of alloys and compounds 810, 151841 (2019). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.JALLCOM.2019.151841
Abstract: Binary metal oxides with superior charge capacity and electrochemical activity have gained great interests. In this work, monodispersed CoMoO4 nanoclusters on the ordered mesoporous carbons were fabricated by a facile self-developed impregnation method. The synthesized hybrids possess improved wettability, high specific surface area (> 700m(2)/g) and regular mesoporous channels (similar to 4 nm), resulting in improved electrochemical performance for supercapacitors. These well-dispersed CoMoO4 nanoclusters exhibit a significant specific capacitance up to 367 F/g in the aqueous KNO3 electrolyte and good reversibility with a cycling efficiency of 99.8%. It is proposed that the mesoporous structure can facilitate the diffusion of electrolyte ions and then accelerate the electrochemical utilization of CoMoO4 nanoclusters. The results demonstrate that the produced binary metal oxide nanoclusters with excellent capacitance and good retention can be used as promising electrodes for the environment-friendly supercapacitors. “Spinel nanoparticles on stick-like Freudenbergite nanocomposites as effective smart-removal photocatalysts for the degradation of organic pollutants under visible light”. Ciocarlan R-G, Seftel EM, Gavrila R, Suchea M, Batuk M, Mertens M, Hadermann J, Cool P, Journal Of Alloys And Compounds 820, 153403 (2020). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jallcom.2019.153403
Abstract: A series of mixed nanocomposite materials was synthetized, containing a Ferrite phase type Zn1-xNixFe2O4 and a Freudenbergite phase type Na2Fe2Ti6O16, where x = 0; 0.2; 0.4; 0.6; 0.8; 1. The choice for this combination is based on the good adsorption properties of Freudenbergite for dye molecules, and the small bandgap energy of Ferrite spinel, allowing activation of the catalysts under visible light irradiation. A two steps synthesis protocol was used to obtain the smart-removal nanocomposites. Firstly, the spinel structure was obtained via the co-precipitation route followed by the addition of the Ti-source and formation of the Freudenbergite system. The role of cations on the formation mechanism and an interesting interchange of cations between spinel and Freudenbergite structures was clarified by a TEM study. Part of the Ti4+ penetrated the spinel structure and, at the same time, part of the Fe3+ formed the Freudenbergite system. The photocatalytic activity was studied under visible light, reaching for the best catalysts a 67% and 40% mineralization degree for methylene blue and rhodamine 6G respectively, after 6 h of irradiation. In the same conditions, the well-known commercial P25 (Degussa) managed to mineralize only 12% and 3% of methylene blue and rhodamine 6G, respectively. Due to the remarkable magnetic properties of Ferrites, a convenient recovery and reuse of the catalysts is possible after the photocatalytic tests. Based on the excellent catalytic performance of the nanocomposites under visible light and their ease of separation out of the solution after the catalytic reaction, the newly developed composite catalysts are considered very effective for wastewater treatment.

“Atomic-resolution fine structure and chemical reaction mechanism of Gd/YbAl₃, thermoelectric-magnetocaloric heterointerface”. Chen C, Sang X, Cui W, Xing L, Nie X, Zhu W, Wei P, Hu Z-Y, Zhang Q, Van Tendeloo G, Zhao W, Journal Of Alloys And Compounds 831, 154722 (2020). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.JALLCOM.2020.154722
Abstract: Thermoelectric materials and magnetocaloric materials are promising candidates for solid-state refrigeration applications. The combination of thermoelectric and magnetocaloric effects could potentially lead to more efficient refrigeration techniques. We designed and successfully synthesized Gd/YbAl3 composites using a YbAl3 matrix with good low-temperature thermoelectric performance and Gd microspheres with a high magnetocaloric performance, using a sintering condition of 750 degrees C and 50 MPa. Using aberration-corrected scanning transmission electron microscopy (STEM), it was discovered that the heterointerface between Gd and YbAl 3 is composed of five sequential interfacial layers: GdAl3, GdAl2, GdAl, Gd3Al2, and Gd3Al. The diffusion of Al atoms plays a crucial role in the formation of these interfacial layers, while Yb or Gd do not participate in the interlayer diffusion. This work provides the essential structural information for further optimizing and designing high-performance composites for thermoelectric-magnetocaloric hybrid refrigeration applications. “Atomic-scale investigation of the heterogeneous precipitation in the E (Al₁₈Mg₃Cr₂) dispersoid of 7075 aluminum alloy”. Ding L, Zhao L, Weng Y, Schryvers D, Liu Q, Idrissi H, Journal Of Alloys And Compounds 851, 156890 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.JALLCOM.2020.156890
Abstract: The heterogeneous precipitation of the eta (MgZn2) phase on the E (Al18Mg3Cr2) dispersoids of the 7075 aluminum alloy was systematically investigated by atomic resolution high-angle annular dark-field scanning transmission electron microscopy (HAADF-STEM) and energy dispersive X-ray spectrometry (EDX). It is found that coarse B particles are heterogeneously precipitated at the E particle interface after water quenching and isothermal aging at 120 degrees C. The incoherent E/Al interface is responsible for the high tendency of heterogeneous precipitation of the B phase. Two different orientation relationships (ORs) between the eta, E and Al matrix are identified: OR1 [2 (11) over bar0](eta)[011](E)//[(1) over bar 12](Al), (01 (1) over bar0)(eta)//(13 (3) over bar)(E)//(201)(Al), OR2 [(1) over bar 12](E)//[0001](eta)//[011](Al), (01 (1) over bar0 )(eta)//(220)(E)//(34 (4) over bar)(Al). The eta phase is preferential to nucleate along the {111}(E) or the {220}(E) planes, depending on its OR. The heterogeneous nucleation of B phase on the E particle could stabilize the E/Al interface by introducing a coherent E/eta interface, which increases the drive force of heterogeneous precipitation. The reorientation of eta phase and mutual diffusion of solute atoms could assist the coherency of the E/eta interface. The present results suggest that increasing the coherency of the E/Al interface is a promising method to suppress the heterogeneous precipitation of the eta phase. (C) 2020 Elsevier B.V. “Asymmetrical superelastic behavior of thermomechanically processed semi-equiatomic NiTi alloy in tensile and compressive modes of deformation”. Safdel A, Zarei-Hanzaki A, Abedi HR, Pourbabak S, Schryvers D, Basu R, Journal Of Alloys And Compounds 878, 160443 (2021). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.JALLCOM.2021.160443
Abstract: In the present work two different cold working and annealing schemes were utilized, and the asymmetric superelastic response of thermomechanically processed materials were then assessed through cyclic tensile and compressive modes of deformation. The values of transformation stress, transformation strain, and pseudoelastic strain were measured for each treated and solutionized specimens and the asymmetric response was compared. In the solution annealed state, the difference of these parameters at different deformation modes was negligible due to the weak texture of the material, while for thermomechanically treated ones, development of specific deformation and recrystallization texture components was identified to be one of the underlying reasons of intensified asymmetry. The evolved substructure during the thermomechanical processing also played a substantial role in determining the asymmetric response. The presence of fine grains and dense dislocation substructure could hinder the movement of the transformation front, thus limiting the range of transformation. In tensile mode, the transformation stress was lower, but higher transformation strain was achieved, which was discussed relying on the slip activity in specified oriented grains. The lower transformation strain in compression mode led to lower pseudoelastic strain due to the narrow transformation range which finally degraded superelastic response of the material. “Antiferroelectric properties and site occupations ofR3+ cations in Ca8MgR(PO4)7 luminescent host materials”. Abstract: Ca8MgR(PO4)(7) = La, Pr, Nd, Sm-Lu, and Y) phosphates with a beta-Ca-3(PO4)(2) related structure were prepared by a standard solid-state method in air. Second-harmonic generation, differential scanning calorimetry, and dielectric measurements led to the conclusion that all Ca8MgR(PO4)(7) are centrosymmetric and go to another centrosymmetric phase in the course of a first-order antiferroelectric phase transition well above room temperature (RT). High-temperature electron diffraction showed that the symmetry changes from R (3) over barc to R (3) over barm during the phase transition. Structures of Ca8MgR(PO4)(7) at RT were refined by the Rietveld method in centrosymmetric space group R (3) over barc. Mg2+ cations occupy the M5 site; the occupancy of the M1 site by R3+ cations increases monotonically from 0.0389 for R = La to 0.1667 for R = Er-Lu, whereas the occupancy of the M3 site by R3+ cations decreases monotonically from 0.1278 for R = La to 0 for R = Er-Lu. In the case of R = Er-Lu, the M3 site is occupied only by Ca2+ cations. P1O(4) tetrahedra and cations at the M3 site are disordered in the R (3) over barc structure of Ca8MgEu(PO4)(7). Using synchrotron X-ray powder diffraction, we found that annealing conditions do not significantly affect the distribution of Ca2+ and Eu3+ cations between the structure positions of Ca8MgEu(PO4)(7). Luminescent properties of CasMgEu(PO4)(7) powder samples were investigated under near-ultraviolet (n-UV) light. Excitation spectra of CasMgEu(PO4)(7) show the strongest absorption at about 395 nm that matches with commercially available n-UV-emitting GaN-based LED chips. Emission spectra show an intense red emission due to the D-5(0) -> F-7(2) transition of Eu3+. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: A comparative study of NH3-sensing performance of blank and modified nanocrystal line SnO2 was performed. Tin dioxide modified by ruthenium displayed the highest ammonia sensitivity with a maximum signal at 200 degrees C. The modifier was shown by XPS and EPR to occur in a mixed valence state of oxidized ruthenium distributed between the surface and bulk of tin dioxide nanocrystals. RuOx clustering on SnO2 surface was detected by means of electron microscopy assisted EDX-mapping. The effect of RuOx on tin dioxide interaction with ammonia was studied by temperature-programmed NH3 desorption, simultaneous Kelvin probe and DC-resistance measurements, EPR spectroscopy and analyses of the gas-solid interaction products. The modifier was shown to promote the materials reactivity to NH3 due to the catalytic activity of RuOx. The interaction with ammonia resulted in dipoles formation on the oxide surface along with reducing the grains net surface charge, established from the electron affinity increase and resistance decrease during NH3 exposure. The RuOx-catalyzed gas-solid interaction was deduced to proceed deeper than in the case of non-modified SnO2 and to yield nitrogen oxides (e.g. NO2), as was suggested by the oxidative character of gaseous products of NH3 interaction with RuOx-modified tin dioxide at 200 degrees C. Abstract: Nanocrystalline ZnO and ZnO(Ga) samples with different gallium content were prepared by wet-chemical method. Introduction of gallium leads to the increase of amount of weak acid sites such as surface hydroxyl groups. Gas sensing properties toward 0.22 ppm H2S and NO2 were studied at 100450 °C by DC conductance measurements. The optimal temperature for gas sensing experiments was determined. Sensor signal toward H2S decreases with increase of Ga concentration. The dependence of ZnO(Ga) sensor signal to NO2 on the gallium content has non-monotonous character, which correlates with the change of conductivity of the samples in air and concentration of paramagnetic donor states.

Abstract: Pure and Nb-doped TiO2 thick-films were prepared by screen-printing, starting from nanosized powders. Grain growth and crystalline phase modification occurred as consequence of firing at high temperature. It has been shown that niobium addition inhibits grain coarsening and hinders anatase-to-rutile phase transition. These semiconducting films exhibited n-type behavior, while Nb acted as donor-dopant. Gas measurements demonstrated that the films are suitable for CO or NO2 sensing. Microstructural characterization by electron microscopy and differential thermal analysis (DTA) highlights the dependence of gas-sensing behavior on film's properties. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. Abstract: This work reports the study of photoconductivity and visible light activated room temperature gas sensors properties of nanocrystalline ZnO thick films sensitized with colloidal CdSe quantum dots (QDs). Nanocrystalline zinc oxide (ZnO) was synthesized by the precipitation method. Colloidal CdSe quantum dots were obtained by high temperature colloidal synthesis. Sensitization was effectuated by three different procedures including direct adsorption of CdSe QDs stabilized with oleic acid on ZnO surface, anchoring to the ZnO surface through a bifunctional molecule of mercaptopropionic acid (MPA), and coating of CdSe QDs with a monolayer of MPA with subsequent adsorption on ZnO surface. “UV effect on NO2 sensing properties of nanocrystalline In2O3”. Ilin A, Martyshov M, Forsh E, Forsh P, Rumyantseva M, Abakumov A, Gaskov A, Kashkarov P, Sensors and actuators : B : chemical 231, 491 (2016). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.snb.2016.03.051
Abstract: Nanocrystalline indium oxide films with extremely small grains in range of 7-40 nm are prepared by sol-gel method. The influence of grain size on the sensitivity of indium oxide to nitrogen dioxide in low concentration at room temperature is investigated under the UV illumination and without illumination. The sensitivity increases with the decrease of grain sizes when In2O3 is illuminated while in the dark In2O3 with intermediate grain size exhibits the highest response. An explanation of the different behavior of the In2O3 with different grain size sensitivity to NO2 under illumination and in the dark is proposed. We demonstrate that pulsed illumination may be used for NO2 detection at room temperature that significantly reduces the power consumption of sensor. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

“p -CoO x / n -SnO 2 nanostructures: New highly selective materials for H 2 S detection”. Abstract: Nanostructures p-CoOx/n-SnO2 based on tin oxide nanowires have been prepared by two step CVD technique and characterized in detail by XRD, XRF, XPS, HAADF-STEM imaging and EDX-STEM mapping. Depending on the temperature of decomposition of cobalt complex during the second step of CVD synthesis of nanostructures cobalt oxide forms a coating and/or isolated nanoparticles on SnO2 nanowire surface. It was found that cobalt presents in +2 and +3 oxidation states. The measurements of gas sensor properties have been carried out during exposure to CO (14 ppm), NH3 (21 ppm), and H2S (2 ppm) in dry air. The opposite trends were observed in the effect of cobalt oxide on the SnO2 gas sensitivity when detecting CO or NH3 in comparison to H2S. The decrease of sensor signal toward CO and NH3 was attributed to high catalytic activity of Co3O4 in oxidation of these gases. Contrary, the significant increase of sensor signal in the presence of H2S was attributed to the formation of metallic cobalt sulfide and removal of the barrier between p-CoOx and n-SnO2. This effect provides an excellent selectivity of p-CoOx/n-SnO2 nanostructures in H2S detection.

“Sub-ppm H2S sensing by tubular ZnO-Co3O4 nanofibers”. Rumyantseva MN, Vladimirova SA, Platonov VB, Chizhov AS, Batuk M, Hadermann J, Khmelevsky NO, Gaskov AM, Sensors And Actuators B-Chemical 307, 127624 (2020). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.snb.2019.127624
Abstract: Tubular ZnO – Co3O4 nanofibers were co-electrospun from polymer solution containing zinc and cobalt acetates. Phase composition, cobalt electronic state and element distribution in the fibers were investigated by XRD, SEM, HRTEM, HAADF-STEM with EDX mapping, and XPS. Bare ZnO has high selective sensitivity to NO and NO2, while ZnO-Co3O4 composites demonstrate selective sensitivity to H2S in dry and humid air. This effect is discussed in terms of transformation of cobalt oxides into cobalt sulfides and change in the acidity of ZnO oxide surface upon cobalt doping. Reduction in response and recovery time is attributed to the formation of a tubular structure facilitating gas transport through the sensitive layer.

“Photoresistive gas sensor based on nanocrystalline ZnO sensitized with colloidal perovskite CsPbBr3 nanocrystals”. Abstract: The development of sensor materials of which gas sensitivity activates under light illumination is of great importance for the design of portable gas analyzers with low power consumption. In the present work a ZnO/CsPbBr3 nanocomposite based on nanocrystalline ZnO and colloidal cubic-shaped perovskite CsPbBr3 nanocrystals (NCs) capped by oleic acide and oleylamine was synthesized. The individual materials and obtained nanocomposite are characterized by x-ray diffraction, low-temperature nitrogen adsorption, x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, high angle annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy with energy-dispersive Xray spectroscopy mapping and UV-vis absorption spectroscopy. The spectral dependence of the photoconductivity of the ZnO/CsPbBr3 nanocomposite reveals a well-defined peak that strongly correlates with the its optical absorption spectrum. The nanocomposite ZnO/CsPbBr3 shows enhanced photoresponse under visible light illumination (lambda(max) = 470 nm, 8 mW/cm(2)) in air, oxygen and argone, compared with pure nanocrystalline ZnO. Under periodic illumination in the temperature range of 25-100 degrees C, the ZnO/CsPbBr3 nanocomposite shows a sensor response to 0.5-3.0 ppm NO2, unlike pure nanocrystalline ZnO matrix, which demonstrates sensor sensitivity to NO2 under the same conditions above 100 degrees C. The effects of humidity on the sensor signal and photoresponse are also discussed.

“Sensitivity of nanocrystalline tungsten oxide to CO and ammonia gas determined by surface catalysts”. Marikutsa A, Yang L, Rumyantseva M, Batuk M, Hadermann J, Gaskov A, Sensors and actuators : B : chemical 277, 336 (2018). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.SNB.2018.09.004
Abstract: Nanocrystalline tungsten oxide with variable particle size and surface area was synthesized by aqueous deposition and heat treatment for use in resistive gas sensors. Surface modification with 1 wt.% Pd and Ru was performed by impregnation to improve the sensitivity to CO and ammonia. Acid and oxidation surface sites were evaluated by temperature-programmed techniques using probe molecules. The surface acidity dropped with increasing particle size, and was weakly affected by additives. Lower crystallinity of WO3 and the presence of Ru species favoured temperature-programmed reduction of the materials. Modifying WO3 increased its sensitivity, to CO at ambient condition for modification by Pd and to NH3 at elevated temperature for Ru modification. An in situ infrared study of the gas – solid interaction showed that the catalytic additives change the interaction route of tungsten oxide with the target gases and make the reception of detected molecules independent of the semiconductor oxide matrix.

“Effect of heat-treatment on luminescence and structure of Ag nanoclusters doped oxyfluoride glasses and implication for fiber drawing”. Kuznetsov AS, Cuong NT, Tikhomirov VK, Jivanescu M, Stesmans A, Chibotaru LF, Velázquez JJ, Rodríguez VD, Kirilenko D, Van Tendeloo G, Moshchalkov VV, Optical materials 34, 616 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.optmat.2011.09.007
Abstract: The effect of heat treatment on the structure and luminescence of Ag nanoclusters doped oxyfluoride glasses was studied and the implication for drawing the corresponding fibers doped with luminescent Ag nanoclusters has been proposed. The heat treatment results, first, in condensation of the Ag nanoclusters into larger Ag nanoparticles and loss of Ag luminescence, and further heat treatment results in precipitation of a luminescent-loss nano- and microcrystalline Ag phases onto the surface of the glass. Thus, the oxyfluoride fiber doped with luminescent Ag nanoclusters was pulled from the viscous glass melt and its attenuation loss was 0.19 dB/cm in the red part of the spectrum; i.e. near to the maximum of Ag nanoclusters luminescence band. The nucleation centers for the Ag nanoclusters in oxyfluoride glasses have been suggested to be the fluorine vacancies and their nanoclusters.

“Structural characterization of Er-doped Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2 glass ceramics”. Krsmanovic R, Bals S, Bertoni G, Van Tendeloo G, Optical materials 30, 1183 (2008). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.optmat.2007.05.045
Abstract: Particularly favourable properties of glass ceramics are developed on the basis of two key advantages of these materials: the variation of chemical composition and of microstructure. Therefore, detailed structural and chemical information are necessary to get insight in novel glass ceramic materials. We present here two examples of Er-doped Li2O-Al2O3-SiO2, with different quantities of ZrO2, both obtained with sol-gel synthesis. Different transmission electron microscopy techniques: conventional TEM, HRTEM, and EELS are used and the results are compared with those previously obtained with XRD and Rietveld analysis. We also demonstrate the 3D reconstruction, obtained from HAADF-STEM imaging, to determine the morphology of nanosize precipitates in these composites. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Highly effective IR light-emitting diodes operating at the wavelength 1.66 mu m and based on the buried heterostructure In0.88Ga0.12As0.26P0.74/ In0.72Ga0.28As0.62P0.38/In0.53Ga0.47As/InP have been grown by liquid-phase epitaxy (LPE) and characterized in detail by means of transmission electron microscopy (TEM), high-resolution electron microscopy (HREM),electron diffraction (ED), X-ray diffraction (XRD), secondary-ion mass spectrometry (SIMS) and electroluminescence measurements. The InGaAsP epilayers are found to be well lattice matched and of good structural quality. A tentative explanation is presented for the spinodal decomposition observed in InGaAsP alloys. A new type of selective CK, gas sensor has been developed and fabricated an the basis of the IR light-emitting diode mentioned above. Especially designed for the remote control of CH4 gas via fibre optics, an integrated optoelectronic readout scheme has been developed and tested, It is shown that the proposed type of sensor can be used for the quantitative remote control of CH4 gas concentration (0.2-100%) via a fibre glass line up to a distance of 2 x 1 km. “Semisolid structure for M2 high speed steel prepared by cooling slope”. Amin-Ahmadi B, Aashuri H, Journal of materials processing technology 210, 1632 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jmatprotec.2010.05.011
Abstract: Effects of cooling slope angle and the temperature of molten metal on the globular structure of M2 high speed steel after holding at the semisolid state have been investigated. The globular structure was achieved by pouring the molten metal at 1595 °C on the ceramic cooling slope with the length of 200 mm and the angle of 25°. The globular structure of M2 high speed steel in the form of rolledannealed and as cast condition after holding at semisolid state has been achieved. The size of globular grains of cooling slope sample was smaller than that of the rolledannealed and as cast samples. Solid particles of rolledannealed sample after holding at semisolid state had better roundness compared with cooling slope sample. Dissolution of carbides in the austenite phase at grain boundaries leads to formation of globular particles in the semisolid state. MC-type and M6C-type eutectic carbides reprecipitate during cooling cycle along grain boundaries.

Abstract: Mechanical alloying and ball milling are low cost, up-scalable techniques for the preparation of high purity chalcogenide nanopowders to be used as precursor material for printing thin film solar cells. In this study, high purity copper indium selenium (Cu-In-Se) alloy nanopowders with 20-200 nm particle size were synthesized from macroscopic elemental Cu, In and Se powders via mechanical alloying and planetary ball milling. The particle size distribution, morphology, composition, and purity level of the synthesized Cu-In-Se alloy nanopowders were investigated. Thin Cu-In-Se alloy nanopowder ink coatings, deposited on Mo-coated glass substrates by doctor blading, were converted into a CuInSe2 semiconductor film by selenization heat treatment in Se vapor. The CuInSe2 film showed semiconducting band gap around 1 eV measured by photoluminescence spectroscopy. CuInSe2 absorber layer based thin film solar cell devices were fabricated to assess their performance. The solar cell device showed a total efficiency of 4.8%, as measured on 0.25 cm(2) area cell. “Microstructure and properties of oxygen controlled melt textured NdBaCuO superconductive ceramics”. Monot I, Tancret F, Laffez P, Van Tendeloo G, Desgardin G, Technology 65, 26 (1999). http://doi.org/10.1016/S0921-5107(99)00193-2
Abstract: Nd1+xBa2-xCu3O7-delta (123) bulk superconductors have been synthesised by the oxygen controlled melt growth method. Unlike the YBaCuO system, platinum doping or Nd4Ba2Cu2O10 (422) rich compositions do not refine the peritectic '422' secondary phase, but the latter improves the microstructural quality. Low oxygen partial pressure and high purity precursors are necessary to achieve in a reproducible manner high T-c and J(c) (up to 56 000 A/cm(2) in 0T and 30 000 A/cm(2) under 1.5T). The fishtail effect observed at 77 K is compared with the one observed in the YBCO system, and is discussed in terms of oxygen deficiency, Nd-Ba substitution, defects and vortex lattice. Our TEM observations did not evidence any Nd-Ba substituted clusters in the Nd123 matrix; however, some diffuse streaks, observed in the [100] zone ED pattern, support the fact that the source of the peak effect in this system is mainly due to oxygen disorder and low stability of the orthorhombic phase.
