“Mobile depth profiling and sub-surface imaging techniques for historical paintings : a review”. Alfeld M, Broekaert JAC, Spectrochimica acta: part B : atomic spectroscopy 88, 211 (2013). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.SAB.2013.07.009
Abstract: Hidden, sub-surface paint layers and features contain valuable information for the art-historical investigation of a painting's past and for its conservation for coming generations. The number of techniques available for the study of these features has been considerably extended in the last decades and established techniques have been refined. This review focuses on mobile non-destructive subsurface imaging and depth profiling techniques, which allow for the in-situ investigation of easel paintings, i.e. paintings on a portable support. Among the techniques discussed are: X-ray radiography and infrared reflectography, which are long established methods and are in use for several decades. Their capabilities of element/species specific imaging have been extended by the introduction of energy/wavelength resolved measurements. Scanning macro-X-ray fluorescence analysis made it for the first time possible to acquire elemental distribution images in-situ and optical coherence tomography allows for the non-destructive study the surface paint layers in virtual cross-sections. These techniques and their variants are presented next to other techniques, such as Terahertz imaging, Nuclear Magnetic Resonance depth profiling and established techniques for non destructive testing (thermography, ultrasonic imaging and laser based interference methods) applied in the conservation of historical paintings. Next to selected case studies the capabilities and limitations of the techniques are discussed. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Laser Microprobe Mass Spectrometry (LAMMA) is used to examine micrometric particles of calcium oxyanion salts (CaCO3, CaSO4, CaSO4·2H2O) and calcium oxide, in both the positive and negative ion mode. The major molecular ions, appearing in the positive mass spectrum, can be divided into three series, namely CamOm-1+, (CaO)m+ and (CaO)mH+ (m = 1-4). In the case of the former two series the relative intensities of the mass peaks as a function of the fragment valence K = (1 + 2n)/m, for CamOn+, can be fitted to a Gaussian distribution curve, as was earlier demonstrated for secondary ion mass spectrometry. The high stability of the (CaO)mH+ series can be explained by the favourable fragment valence of +2 corresponding to the usual oxidation state of calcium.

“Study of a unique 16th century Antwerp majolica floor in the Rameyenhof castle's chapel by means of X-ray fluorescence and portable Raman analytical instrumentation”. Abstract: The most unique and only known 16th century Antwerp majolica tile floor in Belgium is situated in a tower of the Rameyenhof castle (Gestel, Belgium). This exceptional work of art has recently been investigated in situ by using X-ray fluorescence (XRF) and Raman spectroscopy in order to study the material characteristics. This study reports on the result of the analyses based on the novel combination of non-destructive and portable instrumentation, including a handheld XRF spectrometer for obtaining elemental information and a mobile Raman spectrometer for retrieving structural and molecular information on the floor tiles in the Rameyenhof castle and on a second, similar medallion, which is stored in the Rubens House museum in Antwerp (Belgium). The investigated material, majolica, is a type of ceramic, which fascinated many people and potters throughout history by its beauty and colourful appearance. In this study the characteristic major/minor and trace element signature of 16th century Antwerp majolica is determined and the pigments used for the colourful paintings present on the floor are identified. Furthermore, based on the elemental fingerprint of the white glaze, and in particular on the presence of zinc in the tiles – an element that was not used for making 16th century majolica – valuable information about the originality of the chapel floor and the two central medallions is acquired. Abstract: Transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction proved chain/ladder incommensurate single crystal structure of investigated samples. The incommensurate ratio was determined from the X-ray and electron diffraction being equal to 0.704. Diffuse scattering intensities localised on the planes perpendicular to the c*-axis and passing through the spots originating from the periodicity of chain sublattice were detected. High-angle grain boundary or twinning formed by rotation of 33.3 degrees around [100] direction was observed. High-resolution electron microscopy images revealed the stacking faults in ac planes.

Abstract: The properties of free-standing silicon and germanium nanowires oriented along the [110] direction are studied using different first principles methods. We show the corrections due to quasi-particles to the band structures obtained using the local-density approximation. The formation energies of B and P doped nanowires are calculated, both in the absence and presence of dangling bond defects and we link these to experimental results. Furthermore, we report on the phonon properties of pure Si and Ge nanowires, as well as Ge/Si core-shell nanowires, and discuss the differences between them.

Abstract: Two concentric two-dimensional GaAs/(Al,Ga)As nanorings in a normal magnetic field are theoretically studied. The single-band effective mass approximation is adopted for both the electron and the hole states, and the analytical solutions are given. We find that the electronic single particle states are arranged in pairs, which exhibit anticrossings and the orbital momentum transitions in the energy spectrum when magnetic field increases. Their period is essentially determined by the radius of the outer ring. The oscillator strength for interband transitions is strongly reduced close to each anticrossing. We show that an optical excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect may occur in concentric nanorings.

Abstract: The optical excitonic Aharonov-Bohm effect in type-1 three-dimensional (In, Ga)As/GaAs nanorings in theoretically explored. The single-particle states of the electron and the hole are extracted from the effective mass theory in the presence of inhomogeneous strain, and an exact numerical diagonalization approach is used to compute the exciton states and the oscillator strength fx for exciton recombination. We studied both the large lithographically-defined and small self-assembled rings. Only in smaller self-assembled nanorings we found optical excitonic AharonovBohm effect. Those oscillations are established by anticrossings between the optically active exciton states with zero orbital momentum. In lithographically defined rings, whose average radius is 33 nm, fx shows no oscillations, whereas in the smaller self-assembled nanoring with average radius of 11.5 nm oscillations in fx for the ground exciton state are found as function of the magnetic field that is superposed on a linear dependence. These oscillations are smeared out at finite temperature, thus photoluminescence intensity exhibits step-like variation with magnetic field even at temperature as small as 4.2 K.

Abstract: The post-growth modification of diamond-like amorphous hydrogenated carbon a-C:H films by laser treatment has been studied by transmission electron microscopy and Raman spectroscopy. a-C:H films grown on Si substrates by benzene decomposition in a rf glow discharge were irradiated with 15 ns pulses of a KrF-excimer laser with fluences in the ran e of E = 50-700 mJ/cm(2). At fluences below 100 mJ/cm(2) an increase in the number of graphitic clusters and in their ordering was evidenced from Raman spectra, while the film structure remained amorphous according to electron microscopy and electron diffraction observations. At higher fluences the appearance of diamond particles of 2-7 nm size, embedded into the lower crystallized graphitic matrix, was observed and simultaneously a progressive growth of graphite nanocrystals with dimensions from 2 nm to 4 nm was deduced from Raman measurements. The maximum thickness of the crystallized surface layer (approximate to 400 nm) and the degree of laser annealing are limited by the film ablation which starts at E > 250 mJ/cm(2). The laser-treated areas lose their chemical inertness. In particular, chemical etching in chromium acid becomes possible, which may be used for patterning the highly inert carbon films.
