  Abstract The confinement of a C-60 molecule encapsulated in a cylindrical nanotube depends on the tube radius. In small tubes with radius R-T less than or similar to 7 A, a fivefold axis of the molecule coincides with the tube axis. The interaction between C-60 molecules in the nanotube is then described by a O-2-rotor model on a 1D liquid chain with coupling between orientational and displacive correlations. This coupling leads to chain contraction. The structure factor of the 1D liquid is derived. In tubes with a larger radius the molecular centers of mass are displaced off the tube axis. The distinction of two groups of peapods with on- and off-axis molecules suggests an explanation of the apparent splitting of A(g) modes of C-60 in nanotubes measured by resonant Raman scattering.

  Abstract A flow injection hydride generation graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometric (FI-HG-GFAAS) method was applied to the determination of Se in Se-doped and undoped cereals and bakery products. For the purpose of doping, the soils used for the cultivation of the cereals were dosed with Se- doped foliar fertilizers. The samples were dissolved in a mixture of HNO(3) and H(2)O(2) solutions using micro-waveassisted digestion. The decomposition of H(2)Se generated from the sample solutions and the trapping of elemental Se were performed at a temperature of 300 degrees C on an Ir-pretreated integrated graphite platform of a transversally heated graphite atomizer(THGA). For release of the trapped Se within a fairly short atomization time (5s), an atomization temperature of 2200 degrees C was observed to be optimal. The overall efficiency of hydride generation, transport and trapping was similar to 86%. The upper limit of the linear dynamic range of calibration was 10 mu gL(-1), which corresponds to 0.5 mu g g(-1) for solid samples. Recovery of the samples spiked with Se(VI) solutions was found to be 93 +/- 6% on average. The relative standard deviation of the determinations was less than 8%. The limit of detection was found to be 0.06 mu gL(-1), corresponding to 3 ng g(-1) for solid samples. The accuracy of the method was verified with the use of IAEA-155 ( whey powder) certified reference material. End-capped THGA tubes resulted in an extension of the linear calibration range compared to that of standard THGAs. The Se content in bakery products made of undoped cereals ranged from 7.7 to 68 ng g(-1) ( wet weight) in 18 samples, whereas the Se content of the corresponding cereals was found to be below 100 ng g(-1) ( wet weight). The Se level of cereals grown on soils treated with Se- doped fertilizers ranged from 128 to 1046 ng g(-1) ( wet weight), and it depended linearly on the Se concentration of the corresponding foliar fertilizer.

  Abstract The energy barrier which has to be overcome for a single vortex to enter or exit the sample is studied for thin superconducting disks, rings, and squares using the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. The shape and the height of the nucleation barrier is investigated for different sample radii and thicknesses and for different values of the Ginzburg-Landau parameter kappa.   Abstract The effect of the electric field on an exciton confined in a pair of vertically coupled quantum dots is studied. We use a single-band approximation and a parabolic model potential. As a result of these idealizations, we obtain a numerically solvable model, which is used to describe the influence of the electron-hole interaction on the Stark effect for the lowest-energy photo luminescence lines. We show that for intermediate tunnel coupling between the dots this interaction leads to an anomalous Stark effect with an essential deviation of the recombination energy from the usual quadratic dependence on the electric field.   Abstract Superexchange interactions in alkali fullerides AC(60) are derived for C-60 molecular ions separated by interstitial alkali-metal ions. We use a multiconfiguration approach which comprises the lowest molecular orbital states of the C-60 molecule and the excited s and d states of the alkali-metal atom A. Interactions are described by the valence bond (Heitler-London) method for a complex (C-60 – A – C-60) – with two valence electrons. The electronic charge transfer between the alkali-metal atom and a neighboring C-60 molecule is not complete. The occupation probability of excited d and s states of the alkali atom is not negligible. In correspondence with the relative positions of the C-60 molecules and A atoms in the polymer crystal, we consider 180degrees and 90degrees (angle) superexchange pathways. For the former case the ground state is found to be a spin singlet separated from a triplet at similar to20 K. For T < 20 K there appear strong spin correlations for the 180degrees superexchange pathway. The results are related to spin lattice relaxation experiments on CsC60 in the polymerized and in the quenched cubic phase. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

  Abstract Spin-dependent tunneling of electrons in a diluted magnetic semiconductor ZnSe/Zn1-xMnxSe/Zn1-yMnySe/ZnSe/Zn1-xMnxSe/ZnSe heterostructure is investigated theoretically in the presence of parallel magnetic and electric fields, but our modeling is appropriate for any dilute magnetic II-VI semiconductor system. In the studied asymmetric system the transmission of electrons and the degree of spin polarization depend on the strength of the magnetic and electric fields and on the direction of the applied bias. For suitable magnetic fields, the output current of the system exhibits a nearly 100% spin polarization and the device can be used as a spin filter. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

  Abstract The role of the Cu atoms sputtered from the cathode material in a cylindrical hollow cathode discharge (HCD) and the corresponding Cu+ ions are studied with a self-consistent model based on the principle of Monte Carlo (MC) and fluid simulations. In order to obtain a more realistic view of the discharge processes, this model is coupled with other submodels, which describe the behavior of electrons, fast Ar atoms, Ar+ ions, and Ar metastable atoms, also based on the principles of MC and fluid simulations. Typical results are, among others, the thermalization profile of the Cu atoms, the fast Cu atom, the thermal Cu atom and Cu+ ion fluxes and densities, and the energy distribution of the Cu+ ions. It was found that the contribution of the Ar+ ions to the sputtering was the most significant, followed by the fast Ar atoms. At the cathode bottom, there was no net sputtered flux but a net amount of redeposition. Throughout the discharge volume, at all the conditions investigated, the largest concentration of Cu atoms was found in the lower half of the HCD, close to the bottom. Penning ionization was found the main ionization mechanism for the Cu atoms. The ionization degree of copper atoms was found to be in the same order as for the argon atoms (10-4).
