Abstract: We study the mixing of two different kinds of particles, having different charge and/or mass, interacting through a pure Coulomb potential, and confined in a parabolic trap. The structure of the cluster and its normal mode spectrum are analyzed as a function of the ratio of the charges (mass ratio) of the two types of particles. We show that particles are not always arranged in a shell structure. Mixing of the particles goes hand in hand with a large number of metastable states. The normal modes of the system are obtained, and we find that some of the special modes can be tuned by varying the ratio between the charges (masses) of the two species. The degree of mixing of the two type of particles is summarized in a phase diagram, and an order parameter that describes quantitatively the mixing between particles is defined.

Abstract: Wigner molecules formed at high magnetic fields in circular and elliptic quantum dots are studied by exact diagonalization (ED) and unrestricted Hartree-Fock (UHF) methods with multicenter basis of displaced lowest Landau level wave functions. The broken symmetry states with semi-classical charge density constructed from superpositions of the ED solutions are compared to the UHF results. UHF overlooks the dependence of the few-electron wave functions on the actual relative positions of electrons localized in different charge puddles and partially compensates for this neglect by an exaggerated separation of charge islands which are more strongly localized than in the exact broken-symmetry states. Abstract: The temperature-dependent magnetoresistance effect is investigated in a magnetically modulated two-dimensional (21)) electron gas (2DEG) which can be realized by depositing two parallel ferromagnets on top of a 2DEG electron gas. In the resonant tunnelling regime the transmission for the parallel and antiparallel magnetization configurations shows a quite distinct dependence on the longitudinal wave vector of the incident electrons. This leads to a very large magneto resistance ratio with a strong temperature dependence. (C) 2004 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Exciton states in self-assembled InP/In0.49Ga0.51P quantum dots subject to magnetic fields up to 50T are calculated. Strain and band mixing are explicitly taken into account in the single-particle models of the electronic structure, while an exact diagonalization approach is adopted to compute the exciton states. Reasonably good agreement with magneto-photoluminescence measurements on InP self-assembled quantum dots is found. As a result of the polarization and angular momentum sensitive selection rules, the exciton ground state is dark. For in-plane polarized light, the magnetic field barely affects the exciton spatial localization, and consequently the exciton oscillator strength for recombination increases only slightly with increasing field. For z polarized light, a sharp increase of the oscillator strength beyond 30 T is found which is attributed to the enhanced s character of the relevant portion of the exciton wave function. Abstract: Spin-dependent tunneling of electrons in a diluted magnetic semiconductor ZnSe/Zn1-xMnxSe/Zn1-yMnySe/ZnSe/Zn1-xMnxSe/ZnSe heterostructure is investigated theoretically in the presence of parallel magnetic and electric fields, but our modeling is appropriate for any dilute magnetic II-VI semiconductor system. In the studied asymmetric system the transmission of electrons and the degree of spin polarization depend on the strength of the magnetic and electric fields and on the direction of the applied bias. For suitable magnetic fields, the output current of the system exhibits a nearly 100% spin polarization and the device can be used as a spin filter. (C) 2005 American Institute of Physics.

“Study of the sputtered Cu atoms and Cu+ ions in a hollow cathode glow discharge using a hybrid model”. Baguer N, Bogaerts A, Journal of applied physics 98, 033303 (2005). http://doi.org/10.1063/1.2005381
Abstract: The role of the Cu atoms sputtered from the cathode material in a cylindrical hollow cathode discharge (HCD) and the corresponding Cu+ ions are studied with a self-consistent model based on the principle of Monte Carlo (MC) and fluid simulations. In order to obtain a more realistic view of the discharge processes, this model is coupled with other submodels, which describe the behavior of electrons, fast Ar atoms, Ar+ ions, and Ar metastable atoms, also based on the principles of MC and fluid simulations. Typical results are, among others, the thermalization profile of the Cu atoms, the fast Cu atom, the thermal Cu atom and Cu+ ion fluxes and densities, and the energy distribution of the Cu+ ions. It was found that the contribution of the Ar+ ions to the sputtering was the most significant, followed by the fast Ar atoms. At the cathode bottom, there was no net sputtered flux but a net amount of redeposition. Throughout the discharge volume, at all the conditions investigated, the largest concentration of Cu atoms was found in the lower half of the HCD, close to the bottom. Penning ionization was found the main ionization mechanism for the Cu atoms. The ionization degree of copper atoms was found to be in the same order as for the argon atoms (10-4). Abstract: The electron wave functions in the inversion layer are analyzed in the case where the dielectric barriers are not infinite. This forces the electron concentration closer to the interface silicon/oxide and reduces the subband energy. This treatment of the inversion layer is extended to the calculation of the electron mobility degradation due to remote Coulomb scattering on a high-k dielectric stacked transistor. The subband energy reduction leads to a decrease of the scattering charge needed to explain the experimental results. This model can also fit better the experimental data when compared with the case where no barrier permeation is considered.

Abstract: The impact of interfacial chemistry occurring at dielectric/gate interface of P-MOS and N-MOS devices is reviewed through a quick literature survey. A specific emphasis is put on the way the bond polarization that occurs between a dielectric and a metal substrate impacts on the gate work function. First-principle simulations are then used to study the work function changes induced by dopant aggregation in nickel monosilicide metal gates. It is shown that the changes are a natural consequence of the variation of the interface polarization.
