Abstract: The transition Fm (3) over bar m -->Pa (3) over bar in solid C-60 is driven by the condensation of orientational modes belonging to X-5(+) irreducible representations (irreps) of Fm (3) over bar m. Taking into account irreps up to the manifold l = 12, we have studied the primary and secondary orientational order parameters loops). We have numerically solved the coupled molecular field equations for these oops and calculated the temperature dependence of Bragg reflection intensities. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract: The variation of structures and superconducting properties by changing extra oxygen or fluorine atoms concentration in Hg-based Cu mixed oxides and YBa2Cu3O6+delta was studied. The data obtained by NPD study of Hg-1201 can be considered as an evidence of the conventional oxygen doping mechanism with 2 delta holes per (CuO2) layer. The extra oxygen atom was found to be located in the middle of the Hg mesh only. Different formal charges of oxygen and fluorine inserted into reduced 123 structure results in its distinct variations. The fluorine incorporation into strongly reduced YBa2Cu3O6+delta causes a significant structural rearrangement and the formation of a new compound with a composition close to YBa2Cu3O6F2 (tetragonal alpha = 3.87 Angstrom and c approximate to 13 Angstrom), which structure was deduced from the combined results of X-ray diffraction, electron diffraction and high resolution electron microscopy. Fluorination treatment by XeF2 of nonsuperconducting 123 samples causes an appearance of bulk superconductivity with T-c up to 94K.

Abstract: A large number of materials have a highly degenerate ground state and therefore a complex microstructure. Because of this degenerate state, phase transitions between the different phases play an important role. High resolution techniques in electron microscopy and nano-scale chemical analysis allow to study not only the microstructure but also the interfaces down to an atomic scale. We focus particularly on the ambiguity of alloys oil approaching the phase transition. The short range order (SRO) in ''1 1/20'' type alloys and the microstructure of ''tweed'' and needle formation in martensite like alloys with composition Ni5Al3 are considered in more detail.

Abstract: Spin systems on an f.c.c.-lattice which exhibit phase segregation are studied by means of Monte Carlo simulations. Short-range order, both above and below the segregation temperature, is observed. Experimental evidence for short range order in Ti-V is provided by electron diffraction.
