Abstract Carbonaceous spherules of millimeter size diameter and found in the upper soils throughout Europe are investigated by TEM, including SAED, HRTEM and EELS, and Raman spectroscopy. The spherules consist primarily of carbon and have an open cell-like internal structure. Most of the carbon appears in an amorphous state, but different morphologies of nano- and microdiamond particles have also been discovered including flake shapes. The latter observation, together with the original findings of some of these spherules in crater-like structures in the landscape and including severely deformed rocks with some spherules being embedded in the fused crust of excavated rocks, points towards unique conditions of origin for these spherules and particles, possibly of exogenic origin. Abstract A 2d3v particle-in-cell/Monte Carlo collisions model was applied to study the influence of the magnetic field strength on the cathode sheath region of a direct current (dc) magnetron discharge. When applying a magnetic field of 520-730 G, the cathode sheath width decreases with magnetic field strength, whereas, if a stronger magnetic field is applied (i. e. from 730 to 2600 G), the sheath width increases. This is explained by studying the structure of the sheath in different magnetic field strengths in terms of the electron and ion densities. The consequences of sheath structure on the sputter deposition process are also investigated. It is found that the magnetic field strength can control the erosion profile and the sputter rate.

Abstract The changes induced by exposing multi-walled carbon nanotubes (CNTs) to atomic nitrogen were analysed by high-resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), x-ray and ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy. It was found that the atomic nitrogen generated by a microwave plasma effectively grafts chemical groups onto the CNT surface altering the density of valence electronic states. HRTEM showed that the exposure to atomic nitrogen does not significantly damage the CNT surface.

Abstract In this paper, the initial mechanisms of nanoparticle formation and growth in radiofrequency acetylene (C2H2) plasmas are investigated by means of a comprehensive self-consistent one-dimensional (1D) fluid model. This model is an extension of the 1D fluid model, developed earlier by De Bleecker et al. Based on the comparison of our previous results with available experimental data for acetylene plasmas in the literature, some new mechanisms for negative ion formation and growth are proposed. Possible routes are considered for the formation of larger (linear and branched) hydrocarbons C2nH2 (n = 3, 4, 5), which contribute to the generation of C2nH− anions (n = 3, 4, 5) due to dissociative electron attachment. Moreover, the vinylidene anion (H2CC−) and higher anions (n = 24) are found to be important plasma species.

Abstract A hybrid model, called the hybrid plasma equipment model, was used to study Ar/Cl(2) inductively coupled plasmas used for the etching of Si. The effects of substrate bias, source power and gas pressure on the plasma characteristics and on the fluxes and energies of plasma species bombarding the substrate were observed. A comparison with experimentally measured etch rates was made to investigate how the etch process is influenced and which plasma species mainly account for the etch process. First, the general plasma characteristics are investigated at the following operating conditions: 10% Ar 90% Cl(2) gas mixture, 5mTorr total gas pressure, 100 sccm gas flow rate, 250W source power, -200V dc bias at the substrate electrode and an operating frequency of 13.56MHz applied to the coil and to the substrate electrode. Subsequently, the pressure is varied from 5 to 80mTorr, the substrate bias from -100 to -300V and the source power from 250 to 1000W. Increasing the total gas pressure results in a decrease of the etch rate and a less anisotropic flux to the substrate due to more collisions of the ions in the sheath. Increasing the substrate bias has an effect on the energy of the ions bombarding the substrate and to a lesser extent on the magnitude of the ion flux. When source power is increased, it was found that, not the energy, but the magnitude of the ion flux is increased. The etch rate was more influenced by a variation of the substrate bias than by a variation of the source power, at these operating conditions. These results suggest that the etch process is mainly affected by the energy of the ions bombarding the substrate and the magnitude of the ion flux, and to a lesser extent by the magnitude of the radical flux.

Abstract Microstructures of TiN/CrN multilayer coatings deposited on austenite steel (Cr Ni 18 8) by pulsed laser deposition (PLD) are characterized using transmission electron microscopy while their mechanical properties were assessed in a ball-on-disk test. All coatings have the same total thickness of about 1 ìm. The individual layers show a highly defective columnar structure, which is characterized by conventional electron microscopy (TEM) as well as by high resolution TEM. These techniques, combined with measurements of the local chemical composition through EDS prove that PLD allows to produce fully separated CrN and TiN layers. The friction, and consequently the wear, are lowered by increasing the total number of layers in the coating.

Abstract The effect of temperature on the structural, electronic and optical properties of dense tetrahedral amorphous carbon made of similar to 80% sp(3)-bonded atoms is investigated using a combination of the classical Monte Carlo technique and density functional theory. A structural transformation accompanied by a slight decrease of the sp(3) fraction is evidenced above a temperature of about 600 degrees C. A structural analysis in combination with energy-loss near-edge structure calculations shows that beyond this temperature, the sp(2)-bonded C sites arrange themselves so as to enhance the conjugation of the p electrons. The Tauc optical band gap deduced from the calculated dielectric function shows major changes beyond this temperature in accordance with experimental results. Energy-loss near-edge structure and band gap calculations additionally reveal a massive destabilization of the of sp(3) bonding phase in favour of sp(2) bonding at a temperature of about 1300 degrees C which agrees very well with the reported value of 1100 degrees C.

Abstract A pair of electrons in vertically stacked self-assembled quantum dots is studied and the singlettriplet energy splitting is calculated in an external electric field using the configuration-interaction method. We show that for double quantum dots the dependence of the singlet energy levels on the electric field involves multiple avoided crossings of three energy levels. The exchange interaction, i.e., the energy difference of the lowest triplet and lowest singlet states, can be tuned by an electric field in a wide range of several tens of meV. For electric fields exceeding a threshold value the exchange interaction becomes a linear function of the field when the two electrons in the singlet state start to occupy the same dot. We also consider non-symmetric confinement, non-perfectly aligned dots, in horizontal as well as vertical field orientation. In a stack of three vertically coupled dots the depth of the confinement in the central dot can be used to enhance the exchange interaction. For a deeper central dot the dependence of the exchange interaction on the electric field is anomalousit initially decreases when the field is applied in both directions parallel and antiparallel to the axis of the stack. Such a behavior is never observed for a pair of quantum dots.

Abstract We present results on model based quantification of electron energy loss spectra (EELS), focusing on the factors that influence accuracy and precision in determining chemical concentrations. Several sources of systematical errors are investigated. The spectrometer entrance aperture determines the collection angle, and the effects of its position with respect to the transmitted beam are investigated, taking into account the diffraction by the crystal structure. The effect of the orientation of the sample is tested experimentally and theoretically on SrTiO3, and finally, a simulated experiment on c-BN at different thicknesses confirms the superior results of the model based method with respect to the conventional method. A test on a set of experimental reference compounds is presented, showing that remarkably good accuracy can be obtained. Recommendations are given to achieve high accuracy and precision in practice. Abstract Thermal diffuse scattered electrons significantly contribute to high-resolution transmission electron microscopy images. Their intensity adds to the background and is peaked at positions of atomic columns. In this paper we suggest an approximation to simulate intensity of thermal diffuse scattered electrons in plane-wave illumination transmission electron microscopy using an emission-potential multislice algorithm which is computationally less intensive than the frozen lattice approximation or the mutual intensity approach. Intensity patterns are computed for Au and InSb for different crystal orientations. These results are compared with intensities from the frozen lattice approximation based on uncorrelated vibration of atoms as well as with the frozen phonon approximation for Au. The frozen phonon method uses a detailed phonon model based on force constants we computed by a density functional theory approach. The comparison shows that our suggested emission-potential method is in close agreement with both the frozen lattice and the frozen phonon approximations.

Abstract Correlated noise is generally present in experimentally recorded electron energy loss spectra due to a non-ideal electron detector. In this contribution we describe a method to experimentally measure the noise properties of the detector as well as the consequences it has for model-based quantification using maximum likelihood. The effect of the correlated noise on the maximum likelihood fitting results can be shown to be negligible for the estimated (co)variance of the parameters while an experimentally obtained scaling factor is required to correct the likelihood ratio test for the reduction of noise power with frequency. Both effects are derived theoretically under a set of approximations and tested for a range of signal-to-noise values using numerical experiments. Finally, an experimental example shows that the correction for correlated noise is essential and should always be included in the fitting procedure. (c) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract The signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) in energy-loss magnetic chiral dichroism (EMCD)the equivalent of X-ray magnetic circular dichroism (XMCD) in the electron microscopeis optimized with respect to the detector shape, size and position. We show that an important increase in SNR over previous experiments can be obtained when taking much larger detector sizes. We determine the ideal shape of the detector but also show that round apertures are a good compromise if placed in their optimal position. We develop the theory for a simple analytical description of the EMCD experiment and then apply it to dynamical multibeam Bloch wave calculations and to an experimental data set. In all cases it is shown that a significant and welcome improvement of the SNR is possible.

Abstract We present energy filtered holography experiments on a thin foil of Al. By propagating the reduced density matrix of the probe electron through the microscope, we quantitatively predict the fringe contrast as a function of energy loss. Fringe contrast simulations include the effect of Fresnel fringes created at the edges of the defocused biprism, the effect of partial coherence in combination with inelastic scattering, and the effect of a finite energy distribution of the incoming beam. Abstract In a numerical experiment based on Gross-Pitaevskii formalism, we demonstrate unique topological quantum coherence in optically trapped Bose-Einstein condensates (BECs). Exploring the fact that vortices in a rotating BEC can be pinned by a geometric arrangement of laser beams, we show the parameter range in which vortex-antivortex molecules or multiquantum vortices are formed as a consequence of the optically imposed symmetry. Being low-energy states, we discuss the conditions for spontaneous nucleation of these unique molecules and their direct experimental observation, and provoke the potential use of the phase print of an antivortex or a multiquantum vortex when realized in unconventional circumstances.

Abstract In this article, results using confocal µ-Raman to analyse the cross-section of paint samples are presented. Results obtained with light microscopy, scanning electron microscopy (SEM) combined with an energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and micro-X-ray fluorescence (µ-XRF) are mentioned and compared to the ones obtained with confocal (MRS). In some cases, pigment identification was possible only by combining analytical results from different techniques. The samples were drawn from five paintings belonging to the Academy of Fine Arts of Antwerp, which are part of a collection of 34 paintings made by students from the Academy between 1819 and 1920. Since, on the one hand, the painting techniques and materials, especially pigments, used in this period are still not completely known, and on the other hand, this collection constitutes a very important and reliable resource of information, these paintings were chosen for a systematic investigation. They represent the evolution of painting in Belgium over approximately a century.

Abstract A Monte Carlo model is utilized for studying the behavior of electrons in the afterglow of an analytical microsecond dc pulsed glow discharge. This model uses several quantities as input data, such as electric field and potential, ion flux at the cathode, the fast argon ion and atom impact ionization rates, slow electron density, the electrical characterization of the pulse (voltage and current profiles) and temperature profile. These quantities were obtained by earlier Monte Carlo fluid calculations for a pulsed discharge. Our goal is to study the behavior of the so-called Monte Carlo electrons (i.e., those electrons created at the cathode or by ionization collisions in the plasma which are followed by using the Monte Carlo model) from their origin to the moment when they are absorbed at the cell walls or when they have lost their energy by collisions (being transferred to the group of slow electrons) in the afterglow of the pulsed discharge. The thermalization of the electrons is a phenomenon where the electron-electron Coulomb collisions acquire a special importance. Indeed, in the afterglow the cross sections of the other electron reactions taken into account in the model are very low, because of the very low electron energy. We study the electron energy distributions at several times during and after the pulse and at several positions in the plasma cell, focusing on the thermalization and on the behavior of the electrons in the afterglow. Also, the time evolution of the rates of the various collision processes, the average electron energy, the densities of Monte Carlo and slow electrons and the ionization degree are investigated.
