“Ag nanoparticles on mixed Al2O3-Ga2O3 supports as catalysts for the N-alkylation of amines with alcohols”. Geukens I, Vermoortele F, Meledina M, Turner S, Van Tendeloo G, De Vos DE, Applied catalysis : A : general 469, 373 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.apcata.2013.09.044
Abstract: The combination of AgNO3 with NaH results in Ag nanoparticles that can selectively perform alcohol aminations under mild reaction conditions (110 °C). NaH not only serves as a reducing agent for the Ag salt, but also activates the alcohol for dehydrogenation to the corresponding ketone/aldehyde. The stability of the particles can be improved by immobilizing them onto mixed Al2O3Ga2O3 supports; the combination of Ga and Al provides materials with stronger Lewis acidic sites compared to pure alumina or gallium oxide supports. This leads to catalysts with enhanced activities, without the necessity of adding external Lewis acids. Detailed TEM characterization also reveals a close interaction between the Ag NPs and the gallium oxide phase. The obtained catalysts are recyclable and show activity for the alcohol amination using a variety of aliphatic and aromatic amines under mild conditions.

“A scanning electron microscopy study on hollow silica microspheres: defects and influences of the synthesis composition”. Liu S, Wei M, Sui X, Cheng X, Cool P, Van Tendeloo G, Journal of sol-gel science and technology 49, 373 (2009). http://doi.org/10.1007/s10971-008-1875-0
Abstract: Defects on hollow silica spheres synthesized in a tetraethylorthosilicate-octylamine-HCl-H2O system were recorded by scanning microscope. Based on the results, influences of synthesis composition on the formation of these defects are discussed. It is evidenced that products prepared with different octylamine-to-tetraethylorthosilicate ratios may have surface depressions, cracks and non-hollow microspheres. However, by changing water and acid additions, these defects could be reduced or eliminated. Generally, samples synthesized with a large octylamine addition commonly exhibit surface depressions. A small octylamine or a large water addition benefits the formation of solid silica microspheres among the product. Acid, although is not indispensable for the formation of hollow spheres, helps to eliminate or reduce depressions on the hollow shells. It is explained that the added acid gives rise to a relative localized fast hydrolysis versus condensation, facilitating an easy mobility of hydrolyzed silica species, and consequently the shell surface is smoothened.

“The beneficial effect of CO2 in the low temperature synthesis of high quality carbon nanofibers and thin multiwalled carbon nanotubes from CH_{4} over Ni catalysts”. Corthals S, van Noyen J, Geboers J, Vosch T, Liang D, Ke X, Hofkens J, Van Tendeloo G, Jacobs P, Sels B, Carbon 50, 372 (2012). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.carbon.2011.08.047
Abstract: A low temperature chemical vapor deposition method is described for converting CH4 into high-quality carbon nanofibers (CNFs) using a Ni catalyst supported on either spinel or perovskite oxides in the presence of CO2. The addition of CO2 has a significant influence on CNF purity and stability, while the CNF diameter distribution is significantly narrowed. Ultimately, the addition of CO2 changes the CNF structure from fishbone fibers to thin multiwalled carbon nanotubes. A new in situ cooling principle taking into account dry reforming chemistry and thermodynamics is introduced to account for the structural effects of CO2.

“Enhanced hydrogen production by photoreforming of renewable oxygenates through nanostructured Fe2O3 polymorphs”. Carraro G, Maccato C, Gasparotto A, Montini T, Turner S, Lebedev OI, Gombac V, Adami G, Van Tendeloo G, Barreca D, Fornasiero P;, Advanced functional materials 24, 372 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1002/adfm.201302043
Abstract: Sunlight-driven hydrogen production via photoreforming of aqueous solutions containing renewable compounds is an attractive option for sustainable energy generation with reduced carbon footprint. Nevertheless, the absence of photocatalysts combining high efficiency and stability upon solar light activation has up to date strongly hindered the development of this technology. Herein, two scarcely investigated iron(III) oxide polymorphs, β- and ε-Fe2O3, possessing a remarkable activity in sunlight-activated H2 generation from aqueous solutions of renewable oxygenates (i.e., ethanol, glycerol, glucose) are reported. For β-Fe2O3 and ε-Fe2O3, H2 production rates up to 225 and 125 mmol h−1 m−2 are obtained, with significantly superior performances with respect to the commonly investigated α-Fe2O3.

“Ordered end-member of ZSM-48 zeolite family”. Kirschhock CEA, Liang D, Van Tendeloo G, Fécant A, Hastoye G, Vanbutsele G, Bats N, Guillon E, Martens JA, Chemistry of materials 21, 371 (2009). http://doi.org/10.1021/cm802614x
Abstract: ZSM-48 and related zeolites are considered to be highly disordered structures. Different polytypes can be clearly distinguished by simulation of high-resolution electron microscopy images. Synthesis of phase-pure polytypes was attempted. One of the investigated samples crystallized via seeding designated as COK-8 consisted of nanoscopic, needlelike crystals with a very large length/width ratio, growing along the pore direction. These specimens are phase-pure polytype 6 (PT6, numbering according to Lobo and van Koningsveld). Aggregates of these nanoneedles occasionally contained a second polytype: PT1. The latter polytype occurred more abundantly in larger crystal rods in an IZM-1 sample crystallized in ethylene glycol. Here too, the isolated crystallites mainly consist of large, defect-free regions of PT6. A simulation of polytype lattice energies offers a rational explanation for the observed polytypical intergrowth formation.

“Ordering principles and defect structure of “1201”, “1212”, and “1222&rdquo, type (Hg,Pr)-Sr-(Sr,Ca,Pr)-Cu-O superconductors”. Van Tendeloo G, Hervieu M, Zhang XF, Raveau B, Journal of solid state chemistry 114, 369 (1995). http://doi.org/10.1006/jssc.1995.1057
Abstract: The new families of superconducting compounds ''1201'' (Hg0.4Pr0.6Sr2CuO4+delta), ''1212'' (Hg0.4Pr0.6Sr2(Ca1-x-ySrxPry) Cu2O6+delta), and ''1222'' (Hg0.4Pr0.6Sr2(Pr1.7Sr0.3)(2)Cu2O8+delta) all show ordering between praseodymium and mercury in the (Hg,Pr)O-delta plane, reducing the symmetry from tetragonal to orthorhombic or even to monoclinic. In the 1201 compound the ordered superstructure can be described as O-I (a(I) approximate to 2a(p), b(I), approximate to a(p), c(I) approximate to c(1201)). In the 1212 compound two distinct superstructures are identified, O-I (a(I) approximate to 2a(p), b(II) approximate to a(p), c(I) approximate to c(1212)) and O-II (a(II) approximate to 2a(p), b(II) approximate to a(p), c(II) approximate to 2c(1212)). In some compounds, such as Hg0.4Pr0.6Sr2(Ca0.4Sr0.4Pr0.2) Cu2O6+delta, the Hg-Pr ordering is only present in microdomains, but due to an ordering between Sr layers and Ca layers, the c-axis doubles and one obtains a tetragonal superstructure T-III (a(III) approximate to a(p), c(III) approximate to 2c(1212)). In the 1222 compound, ordering in the (Pr,Hg)O-delta plane is very defective; a large number of translation defects actually reduce the symmetry to triclinic. (C) 1995 Academic Press, Inc.

Abstract: Oxygen ordering has been investigated in superconducting ABa2Cu3O7-delta ceramic materials with A = Er, Nd, Sm and Yb, as well as in samples of this type with the rate earth A partially substituted by Pr. The critical temperature T(c) was determined as a function of the oxygen deficiency-delta of the compound and the corresponding microstructures were investigated by electron diffraction and electron microscopy. A distinct relationship exists between the width of the 60 K plateau and the ortho II ordering. Our results show that the ortho II ordered phase is the superconducting phase with a characteristic T(c) of 60 K.

“Synthesis, crystal structure and magnetic properties of the Sr2Al0.78Mn1.22O5.2 anion-deficient layered perovskite”. d' Hondt H, Hadermann J, Abakumov AM, Kalyuzhnaya AS, Rozova MG, Tsirlin AA, Tan H, Verbeeck J, Antipov EV, Van Tendeloo G, Journal of solid state chemistry 182, 356 (2009). http://doi.org/10.1016/j.jssc.2008.11.002
Abstract: A new layered perovskite Sr2Al0.78Mn1.22O5.2 has been synthesized by solid state reaction in a sealed evacuated silica tube. The crystal structure has been determined using electron diffraction, high-resolution electron microscopy, and high-angle annular dark field imaging and refined from X-ray powder diffraction data (space group P4/mmm, a=3.89023(5) Å, c=7.8034(1) Å, RI=0.023, RP=0.015). The structure is characterized by an alternation of MnO2 and (Al0.78Mn0.22)O1.2 layers. Oxygen atoms and vacancies, as well as the Al and Mn atoms in the (Al0.78Mn0.22)O1.2 layers are disordered. The local atomic arrangement in these layers is suggested to consist of short fragments of brownmillerite-type tetrahedral chains of corner-sharing AlO4 tetrahedra interrupted by MnO6 octahedra, at which the chain fragments rotate over 90°. This results in an averaged tetragonal symmetry. This is confirmed by the valence state of Mn measured by EELS. The relationship between the Sr2Al0.78Mn1.22O5.2 tetragonal perovskite and the parent Sr2Al1.07Mn0.93O5 brownmillerite is discussed. Magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate spin glass behavior of Sr2Al0.78Mn1.22O5.2. The lack of long-range magnetic ordering contrasts with Mn-containing brownmillerites and is likely caused by the frustration of interlayer interactions due to presence of the Mn atoms in the (Al0.78Mn0.22)O1.2 layers.

Abstract: We demonstrate that near-edge X-ray-absorption fine-structure spectra combined with full-field transmission X-ray microscopy can be used to study the electronic structure of graphite flakes consisting of a few graphene layers. The flake was produced by exfoliation using sodium cholate and then isolated by means of density-gradient ultracentrifugation. An image sequence around the carbon K-edge, analyzed by using reference spectra for the in-plane and out-of-plane regions of the sample, is used to map and spectrally characterize the flat and folded regions of the flake. Additional spectral features in both π and σ regions are observed, which may be related to the presence of topological defects. Doping by metal impurities that were present in the original exfoliated graphite is indicated by the presence of a pre-edge signal at 284.2 eV.

Abstract: The time dependence of the resistance RAC of a La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 single crystal has been investigated in the vicinity of the metal-to-insulator transition temperature. We used local probe microscopy to show the existence, at room temperature, of coexisting clusters of micrometer size. Our analysis shows that relaxation effects can be described with a simple exponential contribution using a random resistor-network, based on phase separation between insulating and metallic domains. Our results clearly prove the existence of a percolation threshold over which no percolation path exists. Moreover, these results highlight the significant role of the remanent magnetization.

Abstract: MXenes, a new family of functional two-dimensional (2D) materials, have shown great potential for an extensive variety of applications within the last decade. Atomic defects and functional groups in MXenes are known to have a tremendous influence on the functional properties. In this review, we focus on recent progress in the characterization of atomic defects and functional group chemistry in MXenes, and how to control them to directly influence various properties (e.g., electron transport, Li' adsorption, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, and magnetism) of 2D MXenes materials. Dynamic structural transformations such as oxidation and growth induced by atomic defects in MXenes are also discussed. The review thus provides perspectives on property optimization through atomic defect engineering, and bottom-up synthesis methods based on defect-assisted homoepitaxial growth of MXenes. Abstract: Monolithic nickel/carbon (Ni/C) composites were prepared from coal tar pitch-impregnated compressed expanded graphite pre-decorated with NiO particles (EGNiO) by pyrolysis at 550 °C and subsequent steam activation at 800 °C. The microstructural arrangement of the Ni-comprising nanoparticles in the composites was investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The specific surface area and porosity of the composites were analyzed by nitrogen adsorption. The catalytic activity of the composites was compared with the material obtained by the conventional H2 treatment of EGNiO using hydrocracking of 2,2,3-trimethylpentane as a model reaction.
