Abstract: In order to bring the diverse functionalities of transition metal oxides into modern electronics, it is imperative to integrate oxide films with controllable properties onto the silicon platform. Here, we present asymmetric LaMnO3/BaTiO3/SrTiO3superlattices fabricated on silicon with layer thickness control at the unit-cell level. By harnessing the coherent strain between the constituent layers, we overcome the biaxial thermal tension from silicon and stabilizec-axis oriented BaTiO3layers with substantially enhanced tetragonality, as revealed by atomically resolved scanning transmission electron microscopy. Optical second harmonic generation measurements signify a predominant out-of-plane polarized state with strongly enhanced net polarization in the tricolor superlattices, as compared to the BaTiO3single film and conventional BaTiO3/SrTiO3superlattice grown on silicon. Meanwhile, this coherent strain in turn suppresses the magnetism of LaMnO3as the thickness of BaTiO3increases. Our study raises the prospect of designing artificial oxide superlattices on silicon with tailored functionalities.

“Compositional study of prehistoric pigments (Carriqueo rock shelter, Argentina) by synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction”. Vazquez C, Martin Palacios O, Darchuk L, Marco Parra L-M, Powder diffraction 25, 264 (2010). http://doi.org/10.1154/1.3478884
Abstract: In this work synchrotron radiation X-ray diffraction technique was successfully applied for the analysis of pigments found in excavation at Carriqueo rock shelter, Neuquen, Argentina. The pigment samples of orange, red, and brown shades were collected from different levels of this archaeological site and compared with a suspected source of provenance (La Oficina creek). X-ray diffraction patterns of several yellowish, reddish, and red pigments showed the presence of haematite, goethite, kaolinite, and quartz. The majority of Carriqueo collected samples belonged to the same group of the suspected source, having haematite and quartz as main crystalline phases. The results indicate that the raw material from La Oficina is the source of most of the pigments found at Carriqueo. The present work helps us to understand the strategy of supplying raw materials by human groups in the North Patagonia region. (C) 2010 International Centre for Diffraction Data. Abstract: Exfoliated graphite samples (EG) with different bulk densities were prepared by the exfoliation of expandable graphite under a thermal shock regime. As a conductive filler, EG has been incorporated successfully into the coal tar pitch matrix by mechanical mixing. The conducting behavior of the composite was interpreted based on the percolation theory. The percolation threshold of the EG/pitch conducting composites at room temperature was as low as 1.5 wt% and did not depend on the bulk density of the EG used. By means of thermogravimetry the improvement of thermal stability of the composites in comparison with pure pitches was detected. The phenomenon was ascribed to heat shielding effect of the EG particles evidenced by matrix-assisted laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry.

Abstract: We present energy filtered holography experiments on a thin foil of Al. By propagating the reduced density matrix of the probe electron through the microscope, we quantitatively predict the fringe contrast as a function of energy loss. Fringe contrast simulations include the effect of Fresnel fringes created at the edges of the defocused biprism, the effect of partial coherence in combination with inelastic scattering, and the effect of a finite energy distribution of the incoming beam. “Quantifying inflow uncertainties in RANS simulations of urban pollutant dispersion”. García Sánchez C, Van Tendeloo G, Gorle C, Atmospheric environment : an international journal 161, 263 (2017). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.ATMOSENV.2017.04.019
Abstract: Numerical simulations of flow and pollutant dispersion in urban environments have the potential to support design and policy decisions that could reduce the population's exposure to air pollution. Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes simulations are a common modeling technique for urban flow and dispersion, but several sources of uncertainty in the simulations can affect the accuracy of the results. The present study proposes a method to quantify the uncertainty related to variability in the inflow boundary conditions. The method is applied to predict flow and pollutant dispersion in downtown Oklahoma City and the results are compared to field measurements available from the Joint Urban 2003 measurement campaign. Three uncertain parameters that define the inflow profiles for velocity, turbulence kinetic energy and turbulence dissipation are defined: the velocity magnitude and direction, and the terrain roughness length. The uncertain parameter space is defined based on the available measurement data, and a non-intrusive propagation approach that employs 729 simulations is used to quantify the uncertainty in the simulation output. A variance based sensitivity analysis is performed to identify the most influential uncertain parameters, and it is shown that the predicted tracer concentrations are influenced by all three uncertain variables. Subsequently, we specify different probability distributions for the uncertain inflow variables based on the available measurement data and calculate the corresponding means and 95% confidence intervals for comparison with the field measurements at 35 locations in downtown Oklahoma City. “Air-pollution-induced chemical decay of a sandy-limestone cathedral in Belgium”. Leysen L, Roekens E, Van Grieken R, The science of the total environment 78, 263 (1989). http://doi.org/10.1016/0048-9697(89)90038-7
Abstract: Different trace- and microanalytical techniques were used in an extensive study to elucidate the chemical deterioration process of the sandy-limestone St Rombouts Cathedral in Mechelen, Belgium. Samples of stones, mortar joints, slates, atmospheric aerosols and gases, total and wet deposition, and water that had run down the cathedral walls, were all thoroughly characterized. At the east side, usually not exposed to precipitation, a 3001000-μm thick outer crust of microcrystalline gypsum was observed, while at the west side, this surface layer was mostly eroded away due to precipitation. At the north and south sides, the crust contains varying amounts of gypsum and calcite. The gypsum is mostly present in a bar-shaped morphology and carbonaceous fly-ash particles were rarely found in the weathering crust. Local stone characteristics seem to be extremely important in relation to the gypsum content of the crust; black samples always have a much higher sulphate content than the corresponding white samples, irrespective of the predominant direction of orientation. The relative contribution of nitrogen- and chlorine-containing pollutants to the total decay process is much smaller than that of sulphur-containing pollutants. Deposition samples collected at the site of the cathedral mostly had a pH of > 5.6, due to the neutralization of the rainwater by alkaline atmospheric constituents. Runoff water and washdown water were enriched in all ions, especially Ca2+ and SO42−, indicating that, indeed, gypsum is the most important weathering product. The suspension in deposition samples and black-well leaching water was highly enriched in silicon-containing particles, while runoff water and white-wall leaching water contained a predominant calcium-rich suspension.

“Characterization and removal of a disfiguring oxalate crust on a large altarpiece by Hans Memling”. Klaassen L, van der Snickt G, Legrand S, Higgitt C, Spring M, Vanmeert F, Rosi F, Brunetti BG, Postec M, Janssens K page 263 (2019).
Abstract: During the conservation treatment of Memling’s Christ with Singing and Music-making Angels, three panel paintings that are among the most monumental works in early Netherlandish art, the conservators came across insoluble surface layers containing calcium oxalates. A very thin and irregular layer of this type, hardly visible to the naked eye, was spread across the surface of all three panels. A much thicker layer forming an opaque and highly disfiguring crust that obscured the composition (Figs. 15.1 and 15.7) was locally present on areas of dark copper-containing paint, where multiple layers of old discolored coatings and accretions remained in place before the most recent cleaning. This article describes the application of a wide range of analytical techniques in order to fully understand the stratigraphy and composition of the crusts on the Memling paintings. FTIR spectroscopy in transmission and reflection mode, micro-ATR-FTIR imaging and macro-rFTIR scanning, SEM-EDX, mobile XRD, and SR-μXRD showed that the crusts contained two related Ca-based oxalate salts, whewellite and weddellite, and were separated from the original paint surface by varnish, indicating that they did not originate from degradation of the original paint but from a combination of microbial action and a thick accumulation of dirt. Supported by the results from these different analytical techniques, which when used together proved to be very effective in providing complementary information that addressed this specific conservation problem, and aided by the presence of the intermediate varnish layer(s), the conservators were able to remove most of the crusts with spectacular results.

“Spherical harmonic solution of the Robin problem for the Helmholtz equation in a supershaped shell”. Caratelli D, Gielis J, Tavkhelidze I, Ricci PE, Applied mathematics 4, 263 (2013). http://doi.org/10.4236/AM.2013.41A040
Abstract: The Robin problem for the Helmholtz equation in normal-polar shells is addressed by using a suitable spherical harmonic expansion technique. Attention is in particular focused on the wide class of domains whose boundaries are defined by a generalized version of the so-called superformula introduced by Gielis. A dedicated numerical procedure based on the computer algebra system Mathematica? is developed in order to validate the proposed methodology. In this way, highly accurate approximations of the solution, featuring properties similar to the classical ones, are obtained.

“Diffusion- and velocity-driven spatial separation of analytes from single droplets entering an ICP off-axis”. Borovinskaya O, Aghaei M, Flamigni L, Hattendorf B, Tanner M, Bogaerts A, Günther D, Journal of analytical atomic spectrometry 29, 262 (2014). http://doi.org/10.1039/c3ja50307k
Abstract: The reproducible temporal separation of ion signals generated from a single multi-element droplet, observed in previous studies, was investigated in detail in this work using an ICPTOFMS with high temporal resolution. It was shown that the signal peak intensities of individual elements temporally shift relative to each other only for droplets moving through the plasma off-axis. The magnitude of these shifts correlated with the vaporization temperatures of the analytes and depended on the radial position of the droplets as well as on the thermal properties and velocity profiles of the carrier gases of the ICP. The occurrence of the signal shifting was explained by a spatial separation of analytes already present in the vapor phase in the ICP from a yet unvaporized residue of the droplet. This separation is most likely driven by anisotropic diffusion of vaporized analytes towards the plasma axis and a radial velocity gradient. The proposed explanation is supported by modeling of the gas velocities inside the ICP and imaging of the atomic and ionic emissions produced from single droplets, whose patterns were sloping towards the center of the torch. The effects observed in these studies are important not only for the fundamental understanding of analyteplasma interactions but have also a direct impact on the signal intensities and stability.

Abstract: Wadsley-Roth phase LixNb6PO25 has been studied as a potential candidate for anode material of Li-ion batteries. Its crystal structure, which consists of ReO3-type blocks of NbO6 octahedra connected with PO4 tetrahedra, provides a good stability and performance during Li+ insertion/removal. Li-ion chemical diffusion coefficient (D-chem) in LixNb6PO25 was determined by means of potentiostatic intermittent titration technique and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy. Different data treatments (classical Warburg equation or the model of an electrode system with ohmic potential drop and/or slow kinetics of the interfacial Li+ ion transfer across the electrode/electrolyte interface) were used for calculation of D-chem of the Li ion inside this material; their applicability is discussed in the article. D-chem changes with the Li-ion doping degree, x, in LixNb3PO25 and has a sharp minimum near the two-phase region at appr. 1.7V vs. Li+/Li. These values of D-chem in LixNb9PO25 (similar to 10(-9)-10(-11) cm(2) s(-1)) were found to be in average noticeably higher than in the widely studied anode material, Li4Ti5O12. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. Abstract: Towards the development of novel drug carriers for oral delivery of poorly soluble drugs mesoporous aerogel carbons (CAs), namely CA10 and CA20 with different pore sizes (10 and 20 nm, respectively), were evaluated. The non-steroidal anti-inflammatory lipophilic compound ibuprofen was incorporated via passive loading. The drug loaded carbon aerogels were systemically investigated by means of High-Resolution Transmission Electron Microscopy (HR-TEM), Nitrogen physisorption studies, X-ray diffraction (XRD), Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC), X-ray photon electron spectroscopy (XPS) and zeta-potential studies. In vitro release studies were performed in simulated intestinal fluids reflecting both fasted (FaSSIF) and fed (FeSSIF) state conditions. Cytotoxicity studies were conducted with human intestinal cells (Caco-2). Drug was in an amorphous state in the pores of the carbon carrier as shown from the physicochemical characterization studies. The results showed marked differences in the release profiles for ibuprofen from the two aerogels in the media tested whereas in vitro toxicity profiles appear to be compatible with potential therapeutic applications at low concentrations. Muys M (2019) Microbial protein as sustainable feed and food ingredient : production and nutritional quality of phototrophs and aerobic heterotrophs. 262 p

Zhang K (2023) Revealing the correlation between titania support properties and propylphosphonic acid modification by in-depth characterization. XVI, 262 p
Abstract: Grafting organophosphonic acids modification (PAs) on metal oxides has shown to be a flexible technology to tune the surface properties of metal oxides for various applications. Nevertheless, there are still puzzles that need to be addressed, such as the correlations between metal oxides properties (types of surface reactive sites) and the modification (modification degree), the correlations between metal oxides properties and the properties of modified surfaces. Moreover, the currently used liquid-phase method for the grafting has associated impeding effects of solvent on tailoring the modification degrees, and also causes the formation of metal phosphonate side products. The solid-phase method can induce the unwanted changes in crystal phase of supports. Based on these questions, the three titania supports with divergent surface properties were selected as the metal oxides supports investigated, propylphosphonic acid (3PA) modification was carried out under the same synthesis conditions: four different concentrations, two solvents (water or toluene), and one reaction time (4 h) and temperature (90 ). MeOH chemisorption was introduced to probe the surface (un)reactive sites for 3PA modification. On the other hand, MeOH chemisorption and inverse gas chromatography (IGC) were combined to characterize the changes in surface polarity and acidic properties induced by the modification. Next, a solid-phase method, manual grinding, was proposed to graft 3PA on titania, avoiding the impeding effects of solvent on improving modification degree and the formation of the titania phosphonate side products, as well as preserving the crystal phase. The results indicate that methanol chemisorption can qualitatively analyze the surface active sites that are consumed by 3PA modification, its chemisorption capacity shows the consistent trend with the maximum modification degree, hereby revealing the kinds of interactions that are important in controlling surface coverage. Titania supports is found to play an important role in changes in surface polarity and acidic properties by charactering the three modified titania samples at a similar modification degree using the methanol chemisorption coupled with in-situ infrared and thermogravimetric-mass spectrometer, and the IGC. Moreover, IGC provides additional information about the changes in binding modes. Furthermore, grafting 3PA modification on titania was achieved by manual grinding. Compared to the liquid-phase method, the maximum modification degree obtained by the manual grinding is 25 % higher while using 83.3 % or 75.0% lower amounts of expensive 3PA and limiting the formation of titania phosphonate side products. Compared to the reactive milling method, the proposed manual grinding method preserves the crystal phase(s) of titania.

Abstract: The (AO)(ABO3)n Ruddlesden-Popper structure is an archetypal complex oxide consisting of two distinct structural units, an (AO) rock salt layer separating an n-octahedra thick perovskite block. Conventional high-temperature oxide synthesis methods cannot access members with n > 3, but low-temperature layer-by-layer thin film methods allow the preparation of materials with thicker perovskite blocks, exploiting high surface mobility and lattice matching with the substrate. This paper describes the growth of an n = 6 member CaO[(CSMO)2(LCMO)2 (CSMO)2] in which the six unit cell perovskite block is sub-divided into two central La0.67Ca0.33MnO3 (LCMO) and two terminal Ca0.85Sm0.15MnO3 (CSMO) layers to allow stabilization of the rock salt layer and variation of the transition metal charge.

Abstract: The interaction between evaporated Pt and pristine or oxygen-plasma-treated multiwall carbon nanotubes (CNTs) is investigated. Pt is found to nucleate at defect sites, whether initially present or introduced by oxygen plasma treatment. The plasma treatment induces a uniform dispersion of Pt nanoparticles at the CNT surface. The absence of additional features in the C 1s core level spectrum indicates that no mixed PtC phase is formed. The formation of COPt bonds at the cluster-CNT interface is suggested to reduce the electronic interaction between Pt nanoparticles and the CNT surface.

Kummamuru NB (2024) Methane and hydrogen storage in clathrate hydrates. XXV, 260 p
Abstract: In a world increasingly reliant on alternative energy sources, the quest for efficient and secure storage solutions is paramount. This doctoral thesis explores the exciting potential of a familiar material – water – to act as a vault for next-generation energy sources like hydrogen (H2) and methane (CH4). Nature offers a solution in the form of clathrate hydrates, fascinating cage-like structures formed from water molecules that can trap these gas molecules within their framework. This research investigates on improving the formation kinetics and gas storage capabilities of clathrate hydrates utilizing porous materials and the interstitial space between non-porous materials to augment the contact between gas and water thereby catalysing the growth of hydrates and unlocking their full potential as efficient and secure energy storage reservoirs. A key outcome of this research is the formulation of an empirical correlation, offering predictive insights into CH4 hydrate phase equilibrium conditions. Innovative approaches utilizing thermally conductive beads have yielded substantial enhancements in CH4 uptake. Furthermore, the identification of optimal water content within porous materials showcases a pathway to maximize CH4 storage capacity and hydrate growth kinetics. In the domain of hydrogen storage, attention is also directed towards unstirred systems, where the integration of functionalized porous materials has demonstrated a significant improvement in the rate of hydrate formation and the overall H2 storage capacity. A noteworthy achievement of this research lies in the successful storage of H2 within confined CH4 hydrates through a gas exchange process and the preliminary results show the potential for safer and more sustainable method for H2 storage at mild thermodynamic conditions, offering promising prospects for future energy systems.

“A new way of synthesis and characterization of superconducting oxyfluoride Sr2Cu(O,F)4+\delta”. Ardashnikova EI, Lubarsky SV, Denisenko DI, Shpanchenko RV, Antipov EV, Van Tendeloo G, Physica: C : superconductivity 253, 259 (1995)
Abstract: Superconducting Cu mixed oxyfluoride, Sr,Cu(O, F)(4+delta), was Obtained via fluorination of Sr2CuO3 by XeF2 in the 100-250 degrees C temperature range in a closed Ni container. The prepared samples exhibited a lower T-c in comparison with earlier reported values. Different samples in the Sr-Cu-O-F system were prepared by a solid-state reaction at 220-400 degrees C, but no formation of the oxyfluoride was detected even with an addition of xenon difluoride. These data allow one to draw conclusions on the metastability of the oxyfluoride under the conditions used, Electron microscopy and X-ray powder diffraction studies revealed large amounts of badly crystallized SrF2; this could be a reason for the small superconducting volume fraction as well as for the inhomogeneous distribution of the anions.
