“Enhancement of plasmon-photon coupling in grating coupled graphene inside a Fabry-Perot cavity”. Zhao CX, Xu W, Dong HM, Yu Y, Qin H, Peeters FM, Solid state communications 280, 45 (2018). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.SSC.2018.06.005
Abstract: We present a theoretical investigation of the plasmon-polariton modes in grating coupled graphene inside a Fabry-Perot cavity. The cavity or photon modes of the device are determined by the Finite Difference Time Domain (FDTD) simulations and the corresponding plasmon-polariton modes are obtained by applying a many-body self-consistent field theory. We find that in such a device structure, the electric field strength of the incident electromagnetic (EM) field can be significantly enhanced near the edges of the grating strips. Thus, the strong coupling between the EM field and the plasmons in graphene can be achieved and the features of the plasmon-polariton oscillations in the structure can be observed. It is found that the frequencies of the plasmon-polariton modes are in the terahertz (THz) bandwidth and depend sensitively on electron density which can be tuned by applying a gate voltage. Moreover, the coupling between the cavity photons and the plasmons in graphene can be further enhanced by increasing the filling factor of the device. This work can help us to gain an in-depth understanding of the THz plasmonic properties of graphene-based structures.

Abstract: The influence of superficial defects on the vortex configurations of a thin superconducting disk is investigated within the time dependent Ginzburg-Landau formalism. The free energy, magnetization, vorticity, and the Cooper pair density are calculated for both metastable and stable vortex configurations and different number of defects on its surface in the presence of an external magnetic field applied perpendicular to the disk area. We show that the competition between the confinement geometry and the geometric position of the defects leads to non-conventional vortex configurations which are not compatible with the symmetry of the sample geometry. Abstract: We observe the evolution of single self-assembled semiconductor quantum dots into quantum rings during AsBr3 in situ etching. The direct three-dimensional imaging of In(Ga)As nanostructures embedded in GaAs matrix is demonstrated by selective wet chemical etching combined with atomic force microscopy. Single neutral excitons confined in these quantum rings are studied by magneto-photoluminescence. Oscillations in the exciton radiative recombination energy and in the emission intensity are observed under an applied magnetic field. Further, we demonstrate that the period of the oscillations can be tuned by a gate potential that modifies the exciton confinement. The experimental results, combined with calculations, indicate that the exciton Aharonov-Bohm effect may account for the observed effects.

Abstract: The structural and melting properties of a quasi-one dimensional system of charged particles, interacting through a screened Coulomb potential are investigated. Depending on the density and the screening length, the system crystallizes in different lattice structures. The structural phase transitions between them are of first or second order. The melting of the system is studied through Monte Carlo simulations and reentrant behavior as a function of density is observed as well as evidence of anisotropic melting. Abstract: We study the effect of a hydrogen atom on the thermal stability of a trapped CH3 molecule on graphene using ReaxFF molecular dynamics simulations. Due to the hydrogen-molecule interaction, enhanced pinning of the CH3 molecule is observed when it is positioned adjacent to the graphene site with the hydrogen atom. We discuss the formation process of such a stable configuration, which originates from different adhesion and migration energies of the hydrogen atom and the CH3 molecule. We also studied the effect of the CH3-H configuration on the electronic transport properties of graphene nanoribbons using first principles density-functional calculations. We found that the formation of the CH3-H structure results in extra features in the transmission spectrum due to the formation of strongly localized states, which are absent when the CH3 molecule is trapped on pristine graphene. Our findings will be useful in exploiting gas sensing properties of graphene, especially for selective detection of individual molecules. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: Using density-functional theory in combination with the nonequilibrium Green's function formalism, we study the effect of the crystal lattice structure of organometallic perovskite CH3NH3PbI3 on its electronic transport properties. Both dispersive interactions and spin-orbit coupling are taken into account in describing structural and electronic properties of the system. We consider two different phases of the material, namely the orthorhombic and cubic lattice structures, which are energetically stable at low (< 160 K) and high (> 330 K) temperatures, respectively. The sizable geometrical differences between the two structures in term of lattice parameters, PbI6 octahedral tilts, rotation and deformations, have considerable impact on the transport properties of the material. For example, at zero bias and for all considered electron energies, the cubic phase has a larger transmission than the orthorhombic one, although both show similar electronic densities of states. Depending on the applied voltage, the current in the cubic system can be several orders of magnitude larger as compared to the one obtained for the orthorhombic sample. We attribute this enhancement in the transmission to the presence of extended states in the cubic phase due to the symmetrically shaped and ordered PbI6 octaherdra. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: Thin superconducting films can exhibit negative magnetoresistance when an in-plane external magnetic field is aligned parallel with the transport current. We explain this effect as due to appearance of parallel vortices in the plain of the film at the first critical magnetic field H-c1 which leads to an enhancement of the superconducting properties and impedes the motion of the current induced perpendicular vortices. Our theoretical results are based on a numerical solution of the time-dependent and stationary 3D Ginzburg-Landau equations.

Abstract: In the present paper, the theory of the large bipolaron is reviewed and the possibility of bipolaron formation in the high-T(c) superconductors is indicated. Operator and path-integral formulations of the large bipolaron problem are compared. In the strong-coupling limit, the effect of non-optimal upper-bounds to the single-polaron groundstate energy is emphasized. The fact that the interaction with multiple phonon branches enhances the electron-phonon interaction and might result in a larger stability region for bipolaron formation is indicated. Experimental values for the static and high-frequency dielectric constants are used to discuss the relevance of bipolaron formation as a pair-forming mechanism in the high-T(c) superconductors.

Abstract: Epitaxial graphene is grown on a non-polar n(+) 6H-SiC m-plane substrate and studied using atomic scale scanning tunneling microscopy. Multilayer graphene is found throughout the surface and exhibits rotational disorder. Moire patterns of different spatial periodicities are found, and we found that as the wavelength increases, so does the amplitude of the modulations. This relationship reveals information about the interplay between the energy required to bend graphene and the interaction energy, i.e. van der Waals energy, with the graphene layer below. Our experiments are supported by theoretical calculations which predict that the membrane topographical amplitude scales with the Moire pattern wavelength, L as L-1 + alpha L-2. Abstract: We revisit the theory of the pseudo magnetic field as induced by strain in graphene using the tight- binding approach. A systematic expansion of the hopping parameter and the deformation of the lattice vectors is presented from which we obtain an expression for the pseudo magnetic field for low energy electrons. We generalize and discuss previous results and propose a novel effective Hamiltonian. The contributions of the different terms to the pseudo field expression are investigated for a model triaxial strain profile and are compared with the full solution. Our work suggests that the previous proposed pseudo magnetic field expression is valid up to reasonably high strain (15%) and there is no K-dependent pseudo-magnetic field.

“Superconductivity in the quantum-size regime”. Shanenko AA, Croitoru MD, Peeters FM, , 79 (2008)
Abstract: Recent technological advances resulted in high-quality superconducting metallic nanofilms and nanowires. The physical properties of such nanostructures are governed by the size-quantization of the transverse electron spectrum. This has a substantial impact on the basic superconducting characteristics, e.g., the order parameter, the critical temperature and the critical magnetic field. In the present paper we give an overview of our theoretical results on this subject. Based on a numerical self-consistent solution of the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we investigate how the superconducting properties are modified in the quantum-size regime.

Abstract: We present a theoretical study on the optoelectronic properties of ABC-stacked trilayer graphene (TLG). The optical conductance and light transmittance are evaluated through using the energy-balance equation derived from the Boltzmann equation for an air/graphene/dielectric-wafer system in the presence of linearly polarized radiation field. The results obtained from two band structure models are examined and compared. For short wavelength radiation, the universal optical conductance sigma(0) = 3e(2)/(4h) can be obtained. Importantly, there exists an optical absorption window in the radiation wavelength range 10-200 mu m, which is induced by different transition energies required for inter- and intra-band optical absorption channels. As a result, we find that the position and width of this window depend sensitively on temperature and carrier density of the system, especially the lower frequency edge. There is a small characteristic absorption peak at about 82 mu m where the largest interband transition states exist in the ABC-stacked TLG model, in contrast to the relatively smooth curves in a simplified model. These theoretical results indicate that TLG has some interesting and important physical properties which can be utilized to realize infrared or THz optoelectronic devices.

Abstract: The ground-state energy of three-particle systems consisting of electrons and holes as found in semiconducting quantum wells is studied. The degree of confinement is determined by the quantum-well width and we can vary the dimensionality of the system from two to three dimensions. The energy levels of the system can further be altered by the application of an external magnetic field which is directed perpendicular to the well.

“On improving accuracy of finite-element solutions of the effective-mass Schrodinger equation for interdiffused quantum wells and quantum wires”. Topalovic DB, Arsoski VV, Pavlovic S, Cukaric NA, Tadic MZ, Peeters FM, Communications in theoretical physics 65, 105 (2016)
Abstract: We use the Galerkin approach and the finite-element method to numerically solve the effective-mass Schrodinger equation. The accuracy of the solution is explored as it varies with the range of the numerical domain. The model potentials are those of interdiffused semiconductor quantum wells and axially symmetric quantum wires. Also, the model of a linear harmonic oscillator is considered for comparison reasons. It is demonstrated that the absolute error of the electron ground state energy level exhibits a minimum at a certain domain range, which is thus considered to be optimal. This range is found to depend on the number of mesh nodes N approximately as alpha(0) log(e)(alpha 1) (alpha N-2), where the values of the constants alpha(0), alpha(1), and alpha(2) are determined by fitting the numerical data. And the optimal range is found to be a weak function of the diffusion length. Moreover, it was demonstrated that a domain range adaptation to the optimal value leads to substantial improvement of accuracy of the solution of the Schrodinger equation.

Abstract: We present full ab initio calculations of the phonon band structure of thin Si nanowires oriented along the [110] direction. Using these phonon dispersion relations, we investigate the structural stability of these wires. We found that all studied wires were stable also when doped with either B or P, if the unit cell was taken sufficiently large along the wire axis. The evolution of the phonon dispersion relations and of the sound velocities with respect to the wire diameters is discussed. Softening is observed for acoustic modes and hardening for optical phonon modes with increasing wire diameters.

Abstract: We performed a molecular dynamics study of vortex-antivortex motion in a superconducting disk with a magnetic dot on top, in the Corbino disk geometry. In this system, vortices and antivortices are forced to move in opposite azimuthal directions by a radially applied current. The dot is magnetized out of plane in order to stabilize composite vortex-antivortex configurations, with vortices closer to the center of the disk and antivortices near to the disk edge. We observe that the interplay between the spatially inhomogeneous current distribution, the screening currents induced by the dipole, and the attractive vortex-antivortex (v-av) interaction result in different dynamical phases. At low current values, antivortices which are distributed at outer rings – remain bounded to vortices at inner rings and the whole configuration rotates rigidly. Above a threshold current, vortices and antivortices unbind and move at different angular velocities in a highly correlated way. Finally, at very strong drive, vortex-antivortex attraction is overhelmed by the external current Lorentz force, causing them to move in opposite directions. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: The scattering of two-dimensional (2D) massless electrons as presented in graphene in the presence of a random array of circular magnetic flux tubes is investigated. The momentum relaxation time and the Hall factor are obtained using optical theorem techniques for scattering. Electrons with energy close to those of the Landau levels of the flux tubes exhibit resonant scattering and have a long life-time to reside inside the magnetic flux tube. These resonances appear as sharp structures in the Hall factor and the magneto-resistance.
