Abstract |
The efficiency of light emission is a critical performance factor for monolayer transition metal dichalcogenides (1L-TMDs) for photonic applications. While various methods have been studied to compensate for lattice defects to improve the quantum yield (QY) of 1L-TMDs, exciton-exciton annihilation (EEA) is still a major nonradiative decay channel for excitons at high exciton densities. Here, we demonstrate that the combined use of a proximal Au plate and a negative electric gate bias (NEGB) for 1L-WS2 provides a dramatic enhancement of the exciton lifetime at high exciton densities with the corresponding QY enhanced by 30 times and the EEA rate constant decreased by 80 times. The suppression of EEA by NEGB is attributed to the reduction of the defect-assisted EEA process, which we also explain with our theoretical model. Our results provide a synergetic solution to cope with EEA to realize high-intensity 2D light emitters using TMDs. |

Abstract |
The perfect as well as the defect structure of several members of the superconducting family HgBa2Can-1CunO2n+2+delta have been studied in detail by electron diffraction and high-resolution electron microscopy Identification of the cation configuration is possible, even in the defect regions, with the help of computer simulations. The fine structure of several defects is analyzed in detail, the most common defect being the intergrowth of slabs corresponding to different n values in the title formula. In general, however, the crystals are of a high perfection, particularly for the lower n members. The occurrence of double (HgO)delta layers is seen occasionally, indicating the possible existence of a material with a double mercury layer. Some of these defects are possibly related to recently discovered anomalies at 250 K in these compounds. |

Abstract |
In the present work, the microstructure and structure of La(0.25)Ce(0.52)Nd(0.17)Pr(0.06)(OH)(3) and La(0.25)Ce(0.52)Nd(0.17)Pr(0.06)O(2) is obtained from transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction measurements. Space group P6(3)/m is assigned to the structure of La(0.25)Ce(0.52)Nd(0.17)Pr(0.06)(OH)(3). Lanthanides are assigned to Wyckoff positions 2c. Cell parameters are a=6.375(5) angstrom and c=3.753(5) angstrom. The thermal decomposition of this compound was studied by differential scanning calorimetry. The process is exothermal with an enthalpy change Delta H degrees value of -254 +/- 10 kJ mol(-1). The decomposition kinetics is complex and two global processes with E(a) values of 98 +/- 4 and 61 +/- 2 kJ mol 21 were observed. The product is a lanthanide dioxide. Space group Fm3m is assigned to the La(0.25)Ce(0.52)Nd(0.17)Pr(0.06)O(2). Lanthanides are distributed in Wyckoff positions 4a. The cell parameter is a=5.479(5) angstrom. Nanopores in the oxide surface are obtained using this method and characterised by STEM measurements. |

Abstract |
We report a totally CMOS-compatible fabrication technique to assemble horizontally suspended single-walled carbon nanotube (SWCNT) resonators. Individual SWCNTs are assembled in parallel at multiple sites by a technique called dielectrophoresis. The mechanical resonance frequencies of the suspended SWCNTs are in the range of 2035 MHz as determined from the piezoresistive response of the resonators during electrostatic actuation. The resistance of the suspended SWCNT either remains unchanged or increases or decreases significantly as a function of the actuation frequency. This can be explained by the effect the nanotube chirality has on the piezoresistive gauge factor. |

Abstract |
In this work, we study the abatement of dilute trichloroethylene (TCE) in air with a negative direct current corona discharge. A numerical model is used to theoretically investigate the underlying plasma chemistry for the removal of TCE, and a reaction pathway for the abatement of TCE is proposed. The Cl atom, mainly produced by dissociation of COCl, is one of the controlling species in the TCE destruction chemistry and contributes to the production of chlorine containing by-products. The effect of humidity on the removal efficiency is studied and a good agreement is found between experiments and the model for both dry (5 % relative humidity (RH)) and humid air (50 % RH). An increase of the relative humidity from 5 % to 50 % has a negative effect on the removal efficiency, decreasing by ±15 % in humid air. The main loss reactions for TCE are with ClO·, O· and CHCl2. Finally, the by-products and energy cost of TCE abatement are discussed. |

Abstract |
This paper discusses our recent results on plasma-based CO2 conversion, obtained by a combination of experiments and modeling, for a dielectric barrier discharge (DBD), a microwave plasma and a packed bed DBD reactor. The results illustrate that plasma technology is quite promising for CO2 conversion, but more research is needed to better understand the underlying mechanisms and to further improve the capabilities. |

Abstract |
The technique of imaging time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry (TOF-SIMS) and dual beam depth, profiling has been used to study the composition of the surface of tabular silver halide microcrystals. Analysis of individual microcrystals with a size well below 1 mum from a given emulsion is possible. The method is successfully applied for the characterization of silver halide microcrystals with subpercent global iodide concentrations confined in surface layers with a thickness below 5 nm. The developed TOF-SIMS analytical procedure is explicitly demonstrated for the molecular imaging of adsorbed thiocyanate layers (SCN) at crystal surfaces of individual crystals and for the differentiation of iodide conversion layers synthesized with KI and with AgI micrates (nanocrystals with a size between 10 and 50 nm). It can be concluded that TOF-SIMS as a microanalytical, surface-sensitive technique has some unique properties over other analytical techniques for the study of complex structured surface layers of silver halide microcrystals. This offers valuable information to support the synthesis of future photographic emulsions. |

Abstract |
We have calculated analytically the spatial distribution of the electric field and current density, and obtained the Joule heat generation rate in a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) subjected to a non-homogeneous magnetic field of a 'chess' configuration. The generation of the Joule heat from the 2DEG is mainly concentrated near the singular corners of each 'chess' field and tends to zero in other corners. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Abstract |
In this work we investigate quantum ballistic transport in ultrasmall junctionless and inversion mode semiconducting nanowire transistors within the framework of the self-consistent Schrödinger-Poisson problem. The quantum transmitting boundary method is used to generate open boundary conditions between the active region and the electron reservoirs. We adopt a subband decomposition approach to make the problem numerically tractable and make a comparison of four different numerical approaches to solve the self-consistent Schrödinger-Poisson problem. Finally we discuss the IV-characteristics for small (r≤5 nm) GaAs nanowire transistors. The novel junctionless pinch-off FET or junctionless nanowire transistor is extensively compared with the gate-all-around (GAA) nanowire MOSFET. |

Abstract |
We introduce a Bayesian genetic algorithm for reconstructing atomic models of monotype crystalline nanoparticles from a single projection using Z-contrast imaging. The number of atoms in a projected atomic column obtained from annular dark field scanning transmission electron microscopy images serves as an input for the initial three-dimensional model. The algorithm minimizes the energy of the structure while utilizing a priori information about the finite precision of the atom-counting results and neighbor-mass relations. The results show promising prospects for obtaining reliable reconstructions of beam-sensitive nanoparticles during dynamical processes from images acquired with sufficiently low incident electron doses. |

Abstract |
Latest trends in dental restorative ceramics involve the development of full-contour 3Y-TZP ceramics which can avoid chipping of veneering porcelains. Among the challenges are the low translucency and the hydrothermal stability of 3Y-TZP ceramics. In this work, different trivalent oxides (Al2O3, Sc2O3, Nd2O3 and La2O3) were selected to dope 3Y-TZP ceramics. Results show that dopant segregation was a key factor to design hydrothermally stable and high-translucent 3Y-TZP ceramics and the cation dopant radius could be used as a controlling parameter. A large trivalent dopant, oversized as compared to Zr4+, exhibiting strong segregation at the ZrO2 grain boundary was preferred. The introduction of 0.2 mol% La2O3 in conventional 0.10.25 wt.% Al2O3-doped 3Y-TZP resulted in an excellent combination of high translucency and superior hydrothermal stability, while retaining excellent mechanical properties. |

Abstract |
The 3D size, morphology and distribution of autocatalytic-grown Ni4Ti3 precipitates in a Ni51Ti49 single crystal were characterized via a FIB/SEM Slice-and-View procedure and phase-field simulation. Important parameters on size and shape of the precipitates were measured. The pair distribution function and the minimum distance between two precipitates from different variants were calculated to describe the 3D distribution of the autocatalytic-grown Ni4Ti3 precipitates in single crystal Ni-Ti, with a comparison to the polycrystalline Ni50.8Ti49.2 alloy. Phase-field simulation was conducted to study the nucleation behavior of precipitates in the single crystal Ni-Ti. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved. |

Abstract |
Surface photovoltage (SPV) measurements can contribute to a better understanding of electronic properties of photocatalysts under illumination. Direct linking of SPV data to the actual photocatalytic activity remains troublesome. This work aims to discuss SPV measurements from a photocatalytic point of view. By means of several application-based scenarios we illustrate that the trend between SPV and photocatalysis strongly depends on parameters such as the crystal structure, surface modifications, morphology and humidity. This makes the interpretation far from straightforward. |

Abstract |
Two-dimensional atomic crystals can radically change their properties in response to external influences, such as substrate orientation or strain, forming materials with novel electronic structure(1-5). An example is the creation of weakly dispersive, 'flat' bands in bilayer graphene for certain 'magic' angles of twist between the orientations of the two layers(6). The quenched kinetic energy in these flat bands promotes electron-electron interactions and facilitates the emergence of strongly correlated phases, such as superconductivity and correlated insulators. However, the very accurate fine-tuning required to obtain the magic angle in twisted-bilayer graphene poses challenges to fabrication and scalability. Here we present an alternative route to creating flat bands that does not involve fine-tuning. Using scanning tunnelling microscopy and spectroscopy, together with numerical simulations, we demonstrate that graphene monolayers placed on an atomically flat substrate can be forced to undergo a buckling transition(7-9), resulting in a periodically modulated pseudo-magnetic field(10-14), which in turn creates a 'post-graphene' material with flat electronic bands. When we introduce the Fermi level into these flat bands using electrostatic doping, we observe a pseudogap-like depletion in the density of states, which signals the emergence of a correlated state(15-17). This buckling of two-dimensional crystals offers a strategy for creating other superlattice systems and, in particular, for exploring interaction phenomena characteristic of flat bands. Buckled monolayer graphene superlattices are found to provide an alternative to twisted bilayer graphene for the study of flat bands and correlated states in a carbon-based material. |

Abstract |
The relative merits of eight procedures for preconcentrations of trace metal ions from natural water samples and synthetic solutions are evaluated. Spikes (100 μg l−1 ) of Mn, Co, Zn, Eu, Cs and Ba and the corresponding radioactive tracers were added to batches of drinking water, estuarine water, sea water, ground water, twice-distilled water and ahumic material solution. After equilibration for 25 months, the following techniques were applied: passage through columns of Dowex Al chelating resin and ofsilylated silica gel, filtration through laminate membrane filters and chelating diethylenetriamine cellulose filters, precipitation with sodium diethyldithiocarbamate and l-(2-pyridylazo)-2-naphthol, extraction with ammonium pyrrolidinedithiocarbamate, and chelation by 8-quinolinol (oxine) followed by adsorption on activated carbon. The quantitative characteristics of these techniques and the influence of the water matrix effects are discussed, as well as the applicability for x-ray fluorescence analysis. |
