Abstract: Polycrystalline samples of La3Ni2NbO9 and La3Ni2TaO9 have been characterised by X-ray and neutron diffraction, electron microscopy, magnetometry and muon spin relaxation (mu SR); the latter technique was also applied to La3Ni2SbO9. On the length scale of a neutron diffraction experiment, the six-coordinate sites of the monoclinic perovskite structure are occupied in a 1:1 ordered manner by Ni and a random 1/3Ni/2/3B' mixture. Electron microscopy demonstrated that this 1:1 ordering is maintained over microscopic distances, although diffuse scattering indicative of short-range ordering on the mixed site was observed. No magnetic Bragg scattering was observed in neutron diffraction patterns collected from La3Ni2B'O-9 (B' = Nb or Ta) at 5 K although in each case mu SR identified the presence of static spins below 30 K. Magnetometry showed that La3Ni2NbO9 behaves as a spin glass below 29 K but significant short-range interactions are present in La3Ni2NbO9 below 85 K. The contrasting properties of these compounds are discussed in terms of their microstructure.

Abstract: Hollow silica spheres were quickly synthesized by an octylamine (OA) templating method using tetraethyl orthosilicate (TEOS) as the silica source. N2-sorption results indicate that the hollow spheres have high surface areas and pore volumes. XRD and TEM measurements reveal that the structure of the hollow spheres depends on the amount of TEOS used in the synthesis. When low amount of TEOS is added, the template-containing precursor spheres depict an XRD pattern with two peaks, which can be indexed to a lamellar phase. After the removal of the template, the obtained hollow spheres show no diffraction peaks in the XRD pattern, suggesting that the nanopores in the silica shells are disordered. If increasing the amount of TEOS, either the uncalcined or the calcined sample gives an XRD pattern with a single diffraction peak. The mesostructure of these hollow silica spheres is typically as HMS materials. TGA analyses suggest that the interaction between the silica species and surfactant is stronger in the latter case.

Abstract: A study has been conducted on the leaching of two fungicides, tebuconazole and cymoxanil, in a soil amended with spent mushroom substrate (SMS), with an evaluation of how different factors influence this process.The objective was based on the potential use of SMS as a biosorbent for immobilizing pesticides in vulnerable soils, and the need to know how it could affect the subsequent transport of these retained compounds. Breakthrough curves (BTCs) for C-14-fungicides, non-incubated and incubated over 30 days, were obtained in columns packed with an unamended soil (S), and this soil amended with SMS at rates of 5% (S + SMS5) and 50% (S + SMS50) under saturated and saturated-unsaturated flows. The highest leaching of tebuconazole (> 50% of the total C-14 added) was found in S when a saturated water flow was applied to the column, but the percentage of leached fungidde decreased when a saturated-unsaturated flow was applied in both SMS-amended soils. Also a significant decrease in teaching was observed for tebuconazole after incubation in the column, especially in S + SMS50 when both flows were applied. Furthermore, cymoxanil leaching was complete in S and S + SMS when a saturated flow was applied, and maximum peak concentrations were reached at 1 pore volume (PV), although BTCs showed peaks with lower concentrations in S + SMS. The amounts of cymoxanil retained only increased in S + SMS when a saturated-unsaturated flow was applied. A more relevant effect of SMS for reducing the leaching of fungidde was observed when cymoxanil was previously incubated in the column, although mineralization was enhanced in this case. These results are of interest for extending SMS application on the control of the leaching of fungicides with different physicochemical characteristics after different ageing times in the soil and water flow conditions applied. Abstract: Perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) is a toxic compound that is absorbed and distributed throughout the body by noncovalent binding to serum proteins such as human serum albumin (hSA). Though the interaction between PFOA and hSA has been already assessed using various analytical techniques, a high resolution and detailed analysis of the binding mode is still lacking. We report here the crystal structure of hSA in complex with PFOA and a medium-chain saturated fatty acid (FA). A total of eight distinct binding sites, four occupied by PFOAs and four by FAs, have been identified. In solution binding studies confirmed the 4:1 PFOA-hSA stoichiometry and revealed the presence of one high and three low affinity binding sites. Competition experiments with known hSA-binding drugs allowed locating the high affinity binding site in sub-domain IIIA. The elucidation of the molecular basis of the interaction between PFOA and hSA might provide not only a better assessment of the absorption and elimination mechanisms of these compounds in vivo but also have implications for the development of novel molecular receptors for diagnostic and biotechnological applications.

Abstract: The influence of preparation techniques on the structure and luminescent properties of K5Eu(MoO4)(4) (KEMO) was investigated. KEMO phosphors were synthesized by three different techniques: solid state and sol-gel (sg) methods as well as the Czochralski (CZ) crystal growth technique. Laboratory powder X-ray diffraction (PXRD) studies revealed that all KEMO samples had a structure analogous to that of other high temperature alpha-K5R(MoO4)(4) palmierite-type phases (space group (SG) R3m). Contrary to laboratory PXRD data, electron diffraction revealed that the KEMO crystal grown by the CZ technique had a (3 + 1)D incommensurately modulated structure (super space group (SSG) C2/m(0 beta 0)00) with the modulation vector q = 0.689b*. A detailed analysis of electron diffraction patterns has shown formation of three twin domains rotated along the c axis of the R-subcell at 60 degrees with respect to each other. Synchrotron XRD patterns showed additional ultra-wide reflexes in addition to reflections of the R-subcell of the palmierite. However, the insufficient number of reflections, their low intensity and large width in the synchrotron X-ray diffraction patterns made it impossible to refine the structure as incommensurately modulated C2/m(0 beta 0)00. An average structure was refined in the C2/m space group with random distribution of K1 and Eu1 in [M1A(2)O(8)]-layers of the palmierite-type structure. The dependence of luminescent properties on utilized synthesis techniques was studied. The emission spectra of all samples exhibit intense red emission originating from the D-5(0) -> F-7(2) Eu3+ transition. The integrated intensity of the emission from the Eu3+ 5D0 term was found to be the highest in the crystal grown by the CZ technique. The quantum yield measured for KEMO crystals demonstrates a very high value of 66.5%. This fact confirms that KEMO crystals are exceptionally attractive for applications as a near-UV converting red phosphor for LEDs.

Abstract: Dislocation mediated plastic deformation decisively influences the friction coefficient and the microstructural changes at many metal sliding interfaces during tribological loading. This work explores the initiation of a tribologically induced microstructure in the vicinity of a copper twin boundary. Two distinct horizontal dislocation traces lines (DTL) are observed in their interaction with the twin boundary beneath the sliding interface. DTL formation seems unaffected by the presence of the twin boundary but the twin boundary acts as an indicator of the occurring deformation mechanisms. Three concurrent elementary processes can be identified: simple shear of the subsurface area in sliding direction, localized shear at the primary DTL and crystal rotation in the layers above and between the DTLs around axes parallel to the transverse direction. Crystal orientation analysis demonstrates a strong compatibility of these proposed processes. Quantitatively separating these different deformation mechanisms is crucial for future predictive modeling of tribological contacts.

Abstract: Co-adsorption of norfloxacin (Nor) and Cu(II) on montmorillonite at pH 4.5, 7.0 and 9.0 was studied by integrated batch adsorption experiments and extended X-ray absorption fine structure (EXAFS) spectroscopy. Under such pH conditions the dominant species of Nor are cation (Nor+), zwitterion (Nor±), and anion (Nor−), respectively. Results indicated that Nor sorption decreased with an increase of solution pH. The presence of Cu(II) slightly suppressed the Nor+ sorption at pH 4.5, while increased Nor± and Nor−sorption on montmorillonite at pH 7.0 and 9.0, respectively. In contrast, Nor increased Cu(II) adsorption at pH 4.5, but had little effect on the adsorption of Cu(II) on montmorillonite at pH 7.0 and 9.0. Spectroscopic results showed that, at pH 4.5, Nor+ was sorbed on montmorillonite by the formation of outer-sphere montmorilloniteNorCu(II) ternary surface complex. At pH 7.0, montmorilloniteNorCu(II) and montmorilloniteCu(II)Nor ternary surface complexes co-exist. At pH 9.0, montmorilloniteCu(II)Nor ternary surface complex was likely formed, which was different to Cu(II)(Nor)2 precipitate of the solution.

Abstract: The microstructure and phase transitions in the perovskite-based ferroelectric lead scandium tantalate, Pb(Sc0.5Ta0.5)O-3 have been investigated by transmission electron microscopy. The effects of ordering of Sc and Ta cations are apparent in reciprocal space as well as in direct space images. High-resolution observations allow direct structure imaging of the domain structure. The structure of the low temperature ferroelectric phase is studied by selected area electron diffraction (SAED) and electron microdiffraction. The relaxer behaviour of this paraelectric-ferroelectric transition is displayed by diffuse intensities in the SAED patterns at temperatures around the Curie point.

Abstract: The late antique/early medieval age in Central Italy is a well-suited context to verify the implications of the end of the natron glass supplies, and to explore the beginnings of the new plant-ash glass technology. We present the results of a LA-ICP-MS analysis campaign conducted on archaeological glass finds excavated at the Santa Maria della Scala hospital site in Siena and in Donoratico. This provided us with major, minor and trace element quantitative data for 49 glass samples belonging to drinking vessels and lamps, dated mainly between the 5th and the 8th century. On the basis of these data, we have sought to identify the working processes and possible glassware trade that are reflected in the glass composition. Major and minor element contents revealed that most samples, also at the later boundary of the explored timeframe, fit well within known late Roman glass classifications (e.g. HIMT, Levantine). Trace element analysis provided further information on the raw materials that were used in the glassmaking process, indicating the use of coastal sands as a silica source and allowing us to formulate different hypotheses on the materials used for the colouring process.
