Abstract: Indoor environments are considered an important contributor to external human exposure to halogenated flame retardants (HFRs) due to the large amounts of chemicals currently incorporated in indoor equipment and the time humans spend every day in indoor environments. In this chapter, the presence and use of novel brominated flame retardants (NBFRs), dechlorane plus (DPs), chlorinated organophosphorus flame retardants (Cl-PFRs) and chlorinated paraffins (CPs) in indoor dust, air and consumer products collected from different indoor microenvironments (homes, public indoor spaces, and vehicles) are discussed. While data on the concentrations of HFRs in indoor dust and air are widely available, figures are still scarce for consumer products, such as textiles and foams, furnishings, flooring, electric and electronic products and building materials. This knowledge gaps still represents the biggest obstacle in linking eventual sources of contamination to the presence and chemical patterns in indoor dust and air.

This allows him to be firmly identified as the painting's patron.

Abstract: Graphene, a new carbon material, is attracting presently an increasing research interest. It stems from the unique electrical and mechanical properties of graphene predicted by theory. Experimental studies of graphene are, however, severely curtailed by a lack of an appropriate technique for its preparation. Mechanical cleavage of graphite proved to be ineffective, since it yields only very small (a few microns in size) particles of monolayer graphene. The rapidly developing approach based on chemical exfoliation of graphite produces large-area coatings composed primarily of arbitrarily oriented multilayer graphene particles. We have developed a technique for preparation of monolayer graphene sheets involving liquid exfoliation of crystalline graphite, which includes synthesis of graphite oxide by deep oxidation as an intermediate stage. Electron diffraction traces, as well as the variation of diffracted intensities with local orientation of graphene sheets, AFM, and HRTEM images testify to a remarkably good monolayer structure of the graphite oxide particles obtained by our technique. These results open a way to setting up high-efficiency production of monolayer graphene sheets appropriate for electrical and optical measurements and fabrication of structures for use in the field of applications.

Abstract: The relationships between incommensurability, charge ordering and magnetotransport properties in Nd0.5Ca0.5Mn1-xCrxO3 manganites have been studied by electron diffraction and lattice imaging versus temperature with 0.02 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.07. All compositions show an incommensurate superstructure over the whole temperature domain, despite the fact that they are ferromagnetic and conductive below 140 K, The q-vector (1/2 – delta)a* decreases with increasing temperature for all compositions x. For a given temperature q also decreases with x. Lattice images obtained at low temperature give a clear view of the characteristics of the incommensurate structure. They also provide a better understanding of the charge ordering process. The low-temperature form of the Cr-doped manganites is not a perfectly doubled cell [[2a(p)root 2 x 2a(p) x a(p)root 2]], but defects inducing a tripled cell occur pseudo-periodically. Abstract: We use the Galerkin approach and the finite-element method to numerically solve the effective-mass Schrodinger equation. The accuracy of the solution is explored as it varies with the range of the numerical domain. The model potentials are those of interdiffused semiconductor quantum wells and axially symmetric quantum wires. Also, the model of a linear harmonic oscillator is considered for comparison reasons. It is demonstrated that the absolute error of the electron ground state energy level exhibits a minimum at a certain domain range, which is thus considered to be optimal. This range is found to depend on the number of mesh nodes N approximately as alpha(0) log(e)(alpha 1) (alpha N-2), where the values of the constants alpha(0), alpha(1), and alpha(2) are determined by fitting the numerical data. And the optimal range is found to be a weak function of the diffusion length. Moreover, it was demonstrated that a domain range adaptation to the optimal value leads to substantial improvement of accuracy of the solution of the Schrodinger equation.

Abstract: In this paper, we evaluate the potential of life cycle assessment (LCA) to support environmental decision making at commercial dairy farms. To achieve this, we follow a four-step method that allows converting environmental assessment results using LCA into case-specific advice for farmers. This is illustrated in a case-study involving 20 specialized Flemish dairy farms. Calculated LCA indicators are normalized into scores between 0 and 100, whereby a score of 100 is assumed optimal, to allow for a mutual comparison of indicators for different environmental impact categories. Next, major farm and management characteristics affecting environmental performance are identified using multiple regression and correlation analyses. Finally, comparing specific farm and management characteristics with those of best performing farms identifies farm-specific optimization strategies. We conclude that this approach complies with most of the identified critical success factors for the successful implementation of LCA as a decision support system for farmers. Key aspects herein are (i) the flexibility and accessibility of the model, (ii) the use of readily available farm data, (iii) farm advisors being intended model users, (iv) the identification of key farm and management characteristics affecting environmental performance and (v) the organization of discussion sessions involving farmers and farm advisors. However, attention should be paid (i) to provide sufficient training and guidance for farm advisors on the use of the applied LCA model and the interpretation of results, (ii) to evaluate the correctness of the used data and (iii) to keep the model up-to-date according to new scientific insights and knowledge concerning LCA methodology. Abstract: Crystalline superlattices consisting of alternating periods of Si layers and O-atomic layers are potential new channel materials for scaled CMOS devices. In this letter, we investigate Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD) for the controlled deposition of O-atoms with O-3 as precursor on Si(100) substrates and Si epitaxy on the O-layer. The O-3 reaction at 50 degrees C on the H-terminated Si results in the formation of Si-OH and/or Si-O-Si-H surface species with monolayer O-content. Defect-free epitaxial growth of Si on an O-layer containing 6.4E+14 O-atoms/cm(2) is achieved from SiH4 at 500 degrees C. (C) 2013 The Electrochemical Society. All rights reserved.

Abstract: This study presents first-principles results on the electronic functionalization of silicene and germanene monolayers by means of chemisorption of adatom species H, Li, F, Sc, Ti, V. Three general adatom-monolayer configurations are considered, each having its distinct effect on the electronic structure, yielding metallic or semiconducting dispersions depending on the adatom species and configuration. The induced bandgap is a (in)direct F gap ranging from 0.2 to 2.3 eV for both silicene and germanene. In general the alternating configuration was found to be the most energetically stable. The boatlike and chairlike conformers are degenerate with the former having anisotropic effective carrier masses. The top configuration leads to the planar monolayer and predominately to a gapped dispersion. The hollow configuration with V adatoms retains the Dirac cone, but with strong orbital planar hybridization at the Fermi level. We also observe a planar surface state the Fermi level for the latter systems. (C) 2013 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: In this paper, portable X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (PXRF) was employed as a screening tool for determining and comparing the pigment use in a large series of paintings by the Belgian artist James Ensor (1860-1949). Benefits and drawbacks of PXRF as a method, and the instrument employed, are discussed from a practical, conservation and instrumental perspective. Regardless of several restrictions due to the set-up and/or the analytical method, it appeared feasible to document the evolution with time in Ensor's use of inorganic pigments and to correlate this technical evolution with stylistic developments, Nevertheless, it became clear that a full identification of all materials present can only be done by means of the analysis of (cross-sectioned) samples.

Abstract: The conformational and configurational preferences of Me2PNSNPMe2 (3) and Me2PNSNAsMe2 (4) have been identified using quantum chemical calculations at the DFT/B3LYP/6-311+G* level of theory. An approach in which energetic, structural (geometries and bond orders), electronic (analysis of the electron density) and spectroscopic properties are combined leads to the conclusion that these sulfur-nitrogen-pnictogen chains share many of the properties of their chalcogen-nitrogen analogues but that the through-space intramolecular interactions favouring the Z,Z configuration are even weaker than in these latter compounds. The results of this analysis also lead to an unambiguous assignment of the variable-temperature 31P and 15N NMR spectra of these compounds and their structures both in solution and in the solid state.

Abstract: Colloidal copper(I) sulfide (Cu2-xS) nanocrystals (NCs) have attracted much attention for a wide range of applications because of their unique optoelectronic properties, driving scientists to explore the potential of using Cu2-xS NCs as seeds in the synthesis of heteronanocrystals to achieve new multifunctional materials. Herein, we developed a multistep synthesis strategy toward Cu2-xS/ZnS heteronanorods. The Janus-type Cu2-xS/ZnS heteronanorods are obtained by the injection of hexagonal high-chalcocite Cu2-xS seed NCs in a hot zinc oleate solution in the presence of suitable surfactants, 20 s after the injection of sulfur precursors. The Cu2-xS seed NCs undergo rapid aggregation and coalescence in the first few seconds after the injection, forming larger NCs that act as the effective seeds for heteronucleation and growth of ZnS. The ZnS heteronucleation occurs on a single (100) facet of the Cu2-xS seed NCs and is followed by fast anisotropic growth along a direction that is perpendicular to the c-axis, thus leading to Cu2-xS/ZnS Janus-type heteronanorods with a sharp heterointerface. Interestingly, the high-chalcocite crystal structure of the injected Cu2-xS seed NCs is preserved in the Cu2-xS segments of the heteronanorods because of the highthermodynamic stability of this Cu2-xS phase. The Cu2-xS/ZnS heteronanorods are subsequently converted into single-component Cu2-xS and CuInS2 nanorods by postsynthetic topotactic cation exchange. This work expands the possibilities for the rational synthesis of colloidal multicomponent heteronanorods by allowing the design principles of postsynthetic heteroepitaxial seeded growth and nanoscale cation exchange to be combined, yielding access to a plethora of multicomponent heteronanorods with diameters in the quantum confinement regime.

Abstract: Metal-based nanoparticles (MNPs) are promoted as effective compounds in the treatment of bacterial infections and as possible alternatives to antibiotics. These MNPs are known to affect a broad spectrum of microorganisms using a multitude of strategies, including the induction of reactive oxygen species and interaction with the inner structures of the bacterial cells. The aim of this review was to summarise the latest studies about the effect of metal-based nanoparticles on pathogenic bacterial biofilm formed in wounds, using the examples of Gram-positive bacterium Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-negative bacterium Pseudomonas aeruginosa, as well as provide an overview of possible clinical applications. Abstract: Silicene and germanene are the silicon and germanium counterparts of graphene, respectively. Recent experimental works have reported the growth of silicene on (1 1 1)Ag surfaces with different atomic configurations, depending on the growth temperature and surface coverage. We first theoretically study the structural and electronic properties of silicene on (1 1 1) Ag surfaces, focusing on the (4 x 4) silicene/Ag structure. Due to symmetry breaking in the silicene layer (nonequivalent number of top and bottom Si atoms), the corrugated silicene layer, with the Ag substrate removed, is predicted to be semiconducting, with a computed energy bandgap of about 0.3 eV. However, the hybridization between the Si 3p orbitals and the Ag 5s orbital in the silicene/(1 1 1)Ag slab model leads to an overall metallic system, with a distribution of local electronic density of states, which is related to the slightly disordered structure of the silicene layer on the (1 1 1)Ag surface. We next study the interaction of silicene and germanene with different hexagonal non-metallic substrates, namely ZnS and ZnSe. On reconstructed (0 0 0 1)ZnS or ZnSe surfaces, which should be more energetically stable for very thin layers, silicene and germanene are found to be semiconducting. Remarkably, the nature and magnitude of their energy bandgap can be controlled by an out-of-plane electric field, an important finding for the potential use of these materials in nanoelectronic devices. Abstract: The ground-state energy of three-particle systems consisting of electrons and holes as found in semiconducting quantum wells is studied. The degree of confinement is determined by the quantum-well width and we can vary the dimensionality of the system from two to three dimensions. The energy levels of the system can further be altered by the application of an external magnetic field which is directed perpendicular to the well.

Abstract: We theoretically investigate the effect of intercalation of third row transition metals (Co, Cr, Fe, Mn, Ti and V) in the layers of WSe2. Using density functional theory (DFT), we investigate the structural stability. We also compute the DFT energies of various magnetic spin configurations. Using these energies, we construct a Heisenberg Hamiltonian and perform a Monte Carlo study on each WSe2 + intercalant system to estimate the Curie or Neel temperature. We find ferromagnetic ground states for Ti and Cr intercalation, with Curie temperatures of 31K and 225K, respectively. In Fe-intercalated WSe2, we predict that antiferromagnetic ordering is present up to 564K. For V intercalation, we find that the system exhibits a double phase transition.

Abstract: Laser microprobe mass spectrometry is used to identify intrarenal microliths; they appear to consist of either oxalate, urate or phosphate. Crystalline and amorphous deposits in rat and human kidney are pin-pointed by the laser beam and their chemical composition determined by mass spectrometry. The method has the potential for wide application in the identification of single organic, inorganic or combination crystals in histological sections.
