Abstract: The obstructive sleep apnea-hypopnea syndrome (OSAHS) is a sleep related breathing disorder. A popular treatment is the use of a mandibular repositioning appliance (MRA) which advances the mandibula during the sleep and decreases the collapsibility of the upper airway. The success rate of such a device is, however, limited and very variable within a population of patients. Previous studies using computational fluid dynamics have shown that there is a decrease in upper airway resistance in patients who improve clinically due to an MRA. In this article, correlations between patient-specific anatomical and functional parameters are studied to examine how MRA induced biomechanical changes will have an impact on the upper airway resistance. Low-dose computed tomography (CT) scans are made from 143 patients suffering from OSAHS. A baseline scan and a scan after mandibular repositioning (MR) are performed in order to study variations in parameters. It is found that MR using a simulation bite is able to induce resistance changes by changing the pharyngeal lumen. The change in minimal cross-sectional area is the best parameter to predict the change in upper airway resistance. Looking at baseline values, the ideal patients for MR induced resistance decrease seem to be women with short airways, high initial resistance and no baseline occlusion.

Abstract: Submicron colloidal Ag particles and nano-sized filaments forming a statistical percolation network during ''in situ'' development of double structure tabular microcrystals of AgRr(I) emulsions have been studied by electron energy-loss spectroscopy and zero-loss electron spectroscopic imaging (EELS/ZLESI). Image analysis has shown that random quasi-fractal clusters were formed in the colloid. ZLESI has been applied to characterise the morphology and defect structure of aggregated particles and filaments. Their energy-loss spectra revealed plasmon excitations and interband 4d electron transitions between 4-32 eV energy-loss. To study the cluster structure and its relation to the physical properties, fractal analysis including estimations of cluster fractal dimensions and of density autocorrelation functions has been performed. Mechanisms of fractal aggregation based on known models of diffusion limited aggregation, cluster-cluster aggregation and percolation are discussed.

Abstract: Microstructural investigations with transmission electron microscopy were carried out on quenched Ni-Ti alloys with 52 and 54.5 at% Ni. For the Ni52Ti48 specimen long time exposed diffraction patterns of a single grain show besides the expected reflections of the B2-phase, two sets of extra reflections in different zones. The first type of spots is explained by lattice displacement waves, which are regarded as precursors of the martensitic Ni-Ti phases, B 19' and R-phase, respectively. The second set of reflection with more diffuse intensity than the other reflections is related to Ni4Ti3 precipitates in an early state of formation. For the Ni-richer Ni54.5Ti45.5 alloy only Ni4Ti3 precipitates in an early state of formation are found but no precursors of the B 19'- and R-phase.

Abstract: We studied the coupled impurity states in a freestanding semiconductor nanowire (NW), within the effective mass approximation and including the effect of the dielectric mismatch, by using finite element method. Bonding and anti-bonding states are found and their energies converge with increasing distance di between the two impurities. The dependence of the binding energy on the wire radius R and the distance di between the two impurities is investigated, and we compare it with the result of a freestanding NW that contains a single impurity.

Abstract: Control of the texture and the biaxial alignment of sputter deposited films has provoked a great deal of interest due to its technological importance. indeed, many physical properties of thin films are influenced by the biaxial alignment. In this context, extensive research has been established to understand the growth mechanism of biaxially aligned Yttria Stabilized Zirconia (YSZ) as a buffer layer for high temperature superconducting copper oxides. In this work, the growth mechanism in general and the mechanism responsible of the biaxial alignment in detail were investigated for thin films of YSZ and TiN deposited by unbalanced magnetron sputtering using non-aligned polycrystalline stainless steel substrates. The mechanism responsible for the preferential out-of-plane alignment has been investigated by performing depositions on a non-tilted substrate. However, to study the in-plane alignment a tilted substrate was used. The microstructure of the deposited layers was characterised by Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). The crystallographic alignment has been investigated by X-ray diffraction (XRD) (angular scans and pole figures) and by Selective Area Diffraction (SAD). It was observed that the deposited layers show a zone T or zone II structure and the layers with a zone T structure consist of faceted grains. There seems to be a correlation between the crystal habit of these faceted grains and the measured biaxial alignment. A model for the preferential out-of-plane orientation, the in-plane alignment and the correlation between the microstructure and the biaxial alignment is proposed.

Abstract: Dissemination programs of nontraditional cookstoves often fail. Nontraditional cookstoves aim to solve problems associated with biomass fuel usage in developing countries. Recent studies do not explain what drives user's cookstove choice. This study therefore builds a holistic framework that centralizes product-specific preferences or needs. The case study identifies product-specific factors that influence rural Senegalese inhabitants to switch to solar cooking, using best worst scaling. Looking at the preferences, the case study classified 126 respondents, in three distinct market segments with different solar cooking expectations. The paper identifies socio-demographic characteristics that explain these differences in the respondents' preferences. Finally, the respondent sample is divided in two groups: solar cooker owners and non-owners. When studied with regard to the same issue, solar cooker owners appear to value benefits of the solar cooker lower than non-owners. This is due to program factors (such as formations, after-sales network) and miscommunication (such as a wrong image of the solar cooker) that highly influenced the respondents' cookstove choice. As a conclusion, solar cookers and solar cooking programs are not always adapted to the needs and requirements of the end-users. Needs-oriented and end-user adopted strategies are necessary in order to successfully implement nontraditional cookstoves programs. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Abstract: The mobilization of arsenic (As) in aquatic environment (groundwater) can cause severe environmental and healthy issues. To develop remediation strategies, we proposed a comprehensive mathematical model to describe the As removal in a arsenite (As (III)) oxidizing and ferrous iron (Fe (II)) oxidizing denitrifying granular biofilm system. In the model framework, the growth-linked microbial oxidation of As (III) and Fe (II) was coupled to chemolithotrophic denitrification of one-step reduction of nitrate to nitrogen gas. Meanwhile, the precipitation of ferric iron (Fe (III)) and adsorption of arsenate (As (V)) onto the biogenic Fe (III) (hydr)oxides were also considered. The model was calibrated by comparing the model predictions against experimental data from batch experiments. The validity of the model was further demonstrated through testing against long-term experimental results from five independent bioreactors with different reactor configurations and operational conditions. Modeling results revealed that the granule size would exert a limited impact on arsenic and iron removal. Nevertheless, their removal efficiencies increased rapidly with the increase of hydraulic retention time (HRT) from 1 h to 12 h, but became independent of HRT as it further increased. The established model framework enables interpretation of a range of experimental observations on As and Fe removal and helps to identify the optimal conditions for enhanced arsenic remediation. Abstract: The Southwest Coastal people of Bangladesh have introduced Tidal River Management (TRM) as an environmentally acceptable water resource management practice based on their indigenous knowledge of water logging of low lying coastal land. TRM helps to address problems resulting from different anthropogenic and structural development activities, and it has been successful in helping coastal communities to adapt to climate change and rising sea level vulnerability by forming new land in Tidal Basins. Hence, it is essential to measure sustainability impacts of TRM from the environmental, socio-economic and institutional perspectives. Therefore, firstly, the study identifies sustainability indicators of TRM considering ecosystem services and secondly, develops an inclusive conceptual framework to understand the important impacts of each indicator at various spatial and temporal scales. The conceptual framework is followed by the construction of a Sustainability Index of Tidal River Management (SITRM). It has advantages over the Ramsar Convention framework (2007) and the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) framework (2012) to measure water sustainability as it includes a sustainable model to project future vulnerability of the community, river and Tidal Basin, emphasizing on climate change issues. It also involves trade-offs analysis, livelihood analysis and SWOT (Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats) analysis for a complete impact assessment to enable decision-makers to focus on those services most likely to be of risks and weaknesses or opportunities and strengths for the sustainability of TRM. Moreover, the framework is a useful guide for policymakers in identifying the sustainability impacts of TRM so that they can choose best coping strategies for coastal people to effectively deal with adverse effects of water-logging and undesired climatic events as well as environmental and socio-economic changes in coastal areas.
