“The preparation and preliminary characterisation of eight geological MPI-DING reference glasses for in-site microanalysis”. Jochum KP, Dingwell DB, Rocholl A, Janssens K, Vincze L, et al, Geostandards newsletter 24, 87 (2000). http://doi.org/10.1111/J.1751-908X.2000.TB00590.X
Abstract: Eight silicate glasses were prepared by directly fusing and stirring 50-100 g each of basalt, andesite, komatiite, peridotite, rhyolite, and quartz-diorite. These are referred to as MPI-DING glasses and were made for the purpose of providing reference materials for geochemical, in-situ microanalytical work. Results from various analytical techniques indicate that individual glass fragments are well homogenised with respect to major and trace elements at the mu m to mm scale. Heterogeneities due to quench crystallisation of olivine have been observed in small and limited areas of the two komatiitic glasses. In order to obtain concentration values for as many elements as possible, the glasses were analysed by a variety of bulk and microanalytical methods in a number of laboratories. From the analytical data, preliminary reference values for more than sixty elements were calculated. The analytical uncertainties of most elements are estimated to be between 1% and 10%.

“Relation between structure, charge ordering and magnetotransport properties in Nd0.5Ca0.5Mn1-xCrxO3 manganites”. Schuddinck W, Van Tendeloo G, Barnabé, A, Hervieu M, Raveau B, Journal of magnetism and magnetic materials
T2 –, Symposium G Material Physics Issues and Applications of Magnetic Oxides, at the E-MRS Spring Meeting, JUN 01-04, 1999, Strasbourg, France 211, 105 (2000). http://doi.org/10.1016/S0304-8853(99)00720-9
Abstract: The relationships between incommensurability, charge ordering and magnetotransport properties in Nd0.5Ca0.5Mn1-xCrxO3 manganites have been studied by electron diffraction and lattice imaging versus temperature with 0.02 less than or equal to x less than or equal to 0.07. All compositions show an incommensurate superstructure over the whole temperature domain, despite the fact that they are ferromagnetic and conductive below 140 K, The q-vector (1/2 – delta)a* decreases with increasing temperature for all compositions x. For a given temperature q also decreases with x. Lattice images obtained at low temperature give a clear view of the characteristics of the incommensurate structure. They also provide a better understanding of the charge ordering process. The low-temperature form of the Cr-doped manganites is not a perfectly doubled cell [[2a(p)root 2 x 2a(p) x a(p)root 2]], but defects inducing a tripled cell occur pseudo-periodically. “Influence of the lattice symmetry on melting of the bilayer Wigner crystal”. Schweigert IV, Schweigert VA, Peeters FM, Journal de physique: 4
T2 –, International Conference on Strongly Coupled Coulomb Systems, SEP 04-10, 1999, ST MALO, FRANCE 10, 117 (2000). http://doi.org/10.1051/jp4:2000515
Abstract: The melting transition of the five different lattices of a bilayer crystal is studied using the Monte-Carlo (MC) technique. We found the surprising result that the square lattice has a substantial larger melting temperature as compared to the other lattice structures, which is a consequence of the specific topology of the temperature induced defects. A new melting criterion is formulated which we show to be universal for bilayers as well as for single layer crystals.

Abstract: Pure and Nb-doped TiO2 thick-films were prepared by screen-printing, starting from nanosized powders. Grain growth and crystalline phase modification occurred as consequence of firing at high temperature. It has been shown that niobium addition inhibits grain coarsening and hinders anatase-to-rutile phase transition. These semiconducting films exhibited n-type behavior, while Nb acted as donor-dopant. Gas measurements demonstrated that the films are suitable for CO or NO2 sensing. Microstructural characterization by electron microscopy and differential thermal analysis (DTA) highlights the dependence of gas-sensing behavior on film's properties. (C) 2000 Elsevier Science S.A. Abstract: We are reporting an unexpected metal insulator transition at the ferromagnetic phase-transition temperature for thin films of La0.9Sr0.1MnO3 (< 50 nm), grown on a (100) face of SrTiO3 substrate. For the thicker films (> 50 nm), similar to the single crystal, no such transition is observed below T-C. Additionally, we observe the suppression of the features associated with charge or orbital ordering in intentionally La-deficient thin films of La0.88Sr0.1MnO3 (< 75 nm). In thin films, transmission electron microscopy reveals a compressive strain due to the epitaxial growth, that is, lattice parameters adopt those of the cubic lattice of SrTiO3. As the film thickness increases, coherent microtwinning is observed in the films and the films relax to a orthorhombic structure. (C) 2000 American Institute of Physics. [S0003-6951(00)00402-2].

“Production of differently shaped multi-wall carbon nanotubes using various cobalt supported catalysts”. Piedigrosso P, Konya Z, Colomer J-F, Fonseca A, Van Tendeloo G, Nagy JB, Physical chemistry, chemical physics 2, 163 (2000). http://doi.org/10.1039/a905622j
Abstract: Catalytic synthesis and transmission electron microscopy (TEM) of multi-wall carbon nanotubes are presented. Silica, zeolite and alumina supported cobalt catalysts were prepared by different methods (impregnation and ion-adsorption precipitation) and were used to produce nanotubes. The synthesis was carried out in a fixed bed flow reactor and the process was optimized in order to produce carbon nanotubes on a gram scale. The influence of various parameters such as the method of catalyst preparation, the nature of the support, cobalt concentration and reaction conditions on the formation of nanotubes was investigated. The carbon deposits were measured and the quality of nanotubes was determined by low and high resolution TEM. Multi-wall straight and coiled nanotubes were found to be fairly regular with an average inner (outer) diameter of 4-7 nm (8-23 nm) and with lengths up to 0.1 mm.

“The influence of the precipitation method on defect formation in multishell AgBrI (111) tabular crystals”. Van Renterghem W, Karthauser S, Schryvers D, van Landuyt J, De Keyzer R, Van Roost C, , 167 (2000)
Abstract: Multishell tabular grains have a higher speed than pure AgBr tabular grains. Usually the shells differ in size and iodide content, but also the precipitation method for the iodide containing shells has an influence on the iodide incorporation. A TEM investigation was performed to determine the defect structure of multishell AgBr (111) tabular crystals containing a shell with a low iodide concentration and one with a high iodide concentration. The twins that induce tabular growth and stacking fault contrast in the region of the iodide shells have been observed, similar to previously studied AgBr/Ag(Br,I) coreshell crystals. Moreover in some of the crystals dislocations have been observed, sometimes even an entire network. The number of dislocations formed varies for the different methods of iodide addition. Also variations in average thickness between the different iodide addition methods have been observed. A higher number of dislocations and thicker crystals point towards a higher local concentration of iodide. These observations allow deciding which iodide incorporation method is most useful for a preferred dislocation pattern.

“Functioning of thiocyanate ions during sulphur and sulphur-plus-gold Sensitization”. Charlier E, Gijbels R, Van Doorselaer M, De Keyzer R, , 172 (2000)
Abstract: Not much about the effect of thiocyanate addition on the sulphur ripening is known, although it is used for many applications in photographic practice. Via a combination of tracer analysis and diffuse reflectance spectroscopy the effect of thiocyanate addition on the sulphur and sulphur-plus-gold ripening could be unveiled. When thiocyanate is added prior to the sulphur addition, it appears to rearrange the silver halide surface in such way that the sulphur deposition rate is enhanced, but the supply of interstitials is limited. Addition of thiocyanate after the sulphur reaction results in the formation of thiocyanate complexes with silver, from which a silver ion is more easily deposited in a surface cell of the silver sulphide clusters thus enhancing the sensitization rate. For sulphur-plus-gold sensitized emulsions it was observed that part of the gold ions could be removed out of the Ag2-xAuxS clusters by addition of thiocyanate ions and subsequent washing. Hence, it was concluded that two different types of gold ions are present in the silver sulphide clusters; 1. gold ions which are substitutional for silver (bound between sulphur and bromide ions) 2. gold ions which bridge two or three sulphur atoms. Incorporation of gold ions into silver sulphide clusters suppresses their optical absorption in diffuse reflectance spectroscopy. Since the optical absorption at 505 nm can completely be restored by addition of thiocyanate, it is assumed that the entity absorbing at this wavelength is a monomer of silver sulphide.
