Abstract: We report on magnetisation of individual superconducting particles with size down to 0.1 micron. The non-invasive access to properties of such small objects has become possible using submicron Hall probes which detect a local magnetic field and work effectively as micro-fluxmeters similar to, e.g., SQUIDs but with an effective detection loop of only about a square micron. We have found that the spatial confinement of superconductivity in a small volume gives rise to dramatic changes in thermodynamic properties of mesoscopic superconductors. Abstract: We consider an interface between two strong time-reversal invariant topological insulators having surface states with opposite spin chirality, or equivalently, opposite mirror Chern number. We show that such an interface supports gapless modes that are protected by mirror symmetry. The interface states are investigated with a continuum model for the Bi2Se3 class of topological insulators that takes into account terms up to third order in the crystal momentum, which ensures that the model has the correct symmetry. The model parameters are obtained from ab initio calculations. Finally, we consider the effect of rotational mismatch at the interface, which breaks the mirror symmetry and opens a gap in the interface spectrum.

Abstract: In this thesis we investigate the emergence of new phenomena in multigap superconductors and multicomponent Ginzburg-Landau theories in the presence of intraband and cross-band pairing. The first part contains a review of emergent phenomena in superconductors with only intraband pairing, in particular the mechanism behind gap resonances which are accompanied by Higgs and Leggett modes. Then we study the gap resonances induced by two-dimensional quantum confinement and describe its spatial profile using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. In the second part we describe the conditions where the cross-band pair formation is feasible. Using the formalism of Green functions we obtain the equations governing the interplay between intraband and cross-band pairing. Also, we derived the Ginzburg-Landau equations considering both intraband and cross-band pairing. Finally, we describe the crossover between the intraband-dominated and crossband-dominated regimes. These two are delimited by a tendency towards a gapless state. When a magnetic field is applied close to the gapless state, we found new arrangements of vortices like square lattices, stripes, labyrinths or of vortex clusters. The experimental signatures and consequences of crosspairing are discussed for MgB2 and Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2.

Abstract: We present a computational model to model the magnetic structure of two-dimensional (2D) dilute-magnetic-semiconductors (DMS) both the monolayers and multilayers using first-principles density functional theory (DFT), as well as their magnetic phase transition as a function of temperature using Monte-Carlo simulations. Using our method, we model the magnetic structure of bulk, bilayer, and monolayer MoS2 substitutionally doped with Fe atoms. We find that the out-of-plane interaction in bilayer MoS2 is weakly ferromagnetic, whereas in bulk MoS2 it is strongly anti-ferromagnetic. Finally, we show that the magnetic order is more robust in bilayer Fe-doped MoS2 compared to the monolayer and results in a room-temperature FM at an atomic substitution of 14-16%.

Abstract: We study the rectification of vortex motion in an asymmetric ring channel in a Corbino setup. With an applied ac current, the motion of vortices in the channel is rectified by the asymmetric potential and induces a dc net flow. The net flow in such a system strongly depends on vortex density, and we distinguish “single-vortex'' rectification regime (for low density, when each vortex is rectified individually) determined by the potential-energy landscape inside each cell of the channel and ”multi-vortex'', or "collective'', rectification (high density case) when the interaction between vortices becomes important. Abstract: We present a theoretical study on optical properties such as optical conductance and light transmission coefficient for mono- and multi-layer graphene systems with AB- and ABC-stacking. Considering an air/graphene/dielectric-water structure, the optical coefficients for those graphene systems are examined and compared. The universal optical conductance sigma(N)(0)=N pi e(2)/(2h) for N layer graphene systems in the visible region is verified. For N 3 layer graphene, the mini-gap induced absorption edges can be observed in odd layers AB-stacked multilayer graphene, where the number and position of the absorption edges are decided by the layers number N. Meanwhile, we can observe the optical absorption windows for those graphene systems in the infrared to terahertz bandwidth (0.2-150 THz). The absorption window is induced by different transition energies required for inter- and intra-band optical absorption channels. We find that the depth and width of the absorption window can be tuned not only via varying temperature and electron density but also by changing the number of graphene layers and the stacking order. These theoretical findings demonstrate that mono- and multi-layer graphene systems can be applied as frequency tunable optoelectronic devices working in infrared to terahertz bandwidth. Abstract: Transitions between different multivortex states and transitions between multivortex states and giant vortex states are observed in mesoscopic superconducting disks using the multiple-small-tunnel-junction method. These results are compared to theoretical calculations within the framework of the nonlinear Ginzburg-Landau theory. We find a good qualitative agreement between the theoretical and experimental results, when we assume that a small defect is present near the center of the experimental sample. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Abstract: Static and dynamic properties of superconducting vortices in a superconducting stripe with a periodic array of weakly-superconducting (or normal metal) regions are studied in the presence of external magnetic and electric fields. The time-dependent Ginzburg-Landau theory is used to describe the electronic transport, where the anisotropy is included through the spatially-dependent critical temperature T-c. Superconducting vortices penetrating into the weak-superconducting region with smaller T-c are more mobile than the ones in the strong superconducting regions. We observe periodic entrance and exit of vortices which reside in the weak link for some short interval. The mobility of the weakly-pinned vortices can be reduced by increasing the uniform applied magnetic field leading to distinct features in the voltage vs. magnetic field response of the system.

Abstract: Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) is the most frequent agent of acute lower respiratory diseases and creates a significant burden of disease in children under 5 years all over the world. RSV causes severe lower respiratory tract infections (LRTI) that require hospitalization, especially in children <= 2 years. The aim of this study was to determine the incidence of RSV in children <= 2 years of age hospitalized for LRTI. Children <= 2 years of age hospitalized for one year for LRTI in the three largest hospitals of Bursa City Center, Turkey were evaluated. These three hospitals comprise 67.5% of all child beds in central Bursa, so this study allows us to evaluate the total disease burden and hospitalization incidence in central Bursa. Nasal swabs of the children were evaluated with RSV RespiStrip (Coris Bioconcept Organization). A total of 671 children were hospitalized for LRTI, and 254 (37.9%) had at least one hospitalization that was positive for RSV. Of all patients with LRTI, 54.8% (368/671) were hospitalized for acute bronchiolitis, while 45.2% (303/671) were hospitalized for pneumonia. Of patients with acute bronchiolitis or pneumonia, 41% (151/368) and 34% (103/303) were RSV+, respectively. Of RSV+ hospitalized children, 59.5% (151/254) were diagnosed as acute bronchiolitis and 40.5% (103/254) as pneumonia. The annual incidences of hospitalization due to LRTI, acute bronchiolitis and pneumonia were 20.5/1000, 11.2/1000 and 9.3/1000, respectively, in children <= 2 years of age. The annual incidences of hospitalization due to RSV+ LRTI, acute bronchiolitis and pneumonia were found as 7.8/1000, 4.6/1000 and 3.2/1000, respectively, in children <= 2 years of age. More than one-third of all children hospitalized with LRTI (38.3%, n=257) were in the 0-3 months age group. Compared to other age groups, RSV positivity was highest in that age group for acute bronchiolitis (57%), pneumonia (39.5%) and also total children with LRTI (47.9%). RSV is a very important cause of lower respiratory infections in children <= 2 years of age and occurred most frequently in those 0-3 months of age in our study. Since there is no other study assessing the annual hospitalization incidence of RSV+ LRTIs in one city in Turkey, our study has unique importance for providing valuable statistical data about RSV+ LRTIs.

Abstract: We provide experimental evidence for the existence of ferromagnetism in bilayers of Pd/C-60 which is supported by theoretical calculations based on density functional theory (DFT). The observed ferromagnetism is surprising as C-60 and Pd films are both non-ferromagnetic in the non-interacting limit. Magnetization (M) versus applied field (H) data acquired at different temperatures (T) show magnetic hysteresis with typical coercive fields (H-c) on the order of 50 Oe. From the temperature-dependent magnetization M(T) we extract a Curie temperature (T-c >= 550 K) using Bloch-like power law extrapolations to high temperatures. Using DFT calculations we investigated all plausible scenarios for the interaction between the C-60 molecules and the Pd slabs, Pd single atoms and Pd clusters. DFT shows that while the C-60 molecules are nonmagnetic, Pd films have a degenerate ground state that subject to a weak perturbation, can become ferromagnetic. Calculations also show that the interaction of C-60 molecules with excess Pd atoms and with sharp edges of a Pd slab is the most likely configuration that render the system ferromagnetic Interestingly, the calculated charge transfer (0.016 e per surface Pd atom, 0.064 e per Pd for intimate contact region) between C-60 and Pd does not appear to play an important role.
