Abstract: The origin(s) and role(s) of metal soaps in paints are a worldwide concern today. These hybrid compounds, containing both fatty acid chains and metals associated with a carboxylate function, are increasingly identified in paints. As reviewed in the first part of this work, the presence of metal soaps in paints is differently interpreted in scientific publications: metal soaps are sometimes considered to play a positive role as anchor points, during paint drying processes; they can also be considered as responsible for many degradation processes (protrusions, efflorescences, darkening, etc.). Their origins are also interpreted in various ways. In some paintings (in particular from the twentieth century), they have sometimes introduced on purpose, as additives, to modify the physical properties of the painting materials. In older paintings, metal soaps are usually thought to result from an uncontrolled reaction of oil with lead-based pigments, in particular lead white, red lead, and lead tin yellow. In the second part of this work, the review of historical recipes of lead-based paint shows an important number of recipes based on controlled mixing of oil with lead driers. In the third part, the experimental reproduction of such traditional recipes using walnut oil and litharge (PbO) shows that lead soaps can be formed, both in about one hour at approximate to 100 degrees C, or in about one month at room temperature. It shows as well that after a few years, litharge is no longer detected in the paint medium, while different lead carbonates are. Finally, the micro-infrared spectroscopy and micro-X-ray diffraction re-analysis of protrusions from a nine-year model painting shows together with lead soaps, the presence of Pb-5(CO3)(3)(OH)(2)O ('synthetic plumbonacrite'), an unusual phase recently observed in a protrusion from a painting by Vincent Van Gogh. This work highlights (i) the multiple origins and roles of metal soaps in paints and (ii) the importance of combining the analysis of fragments from historical paintings with the analysis and reproduction of historical recipes. In particular, we show that the components detected today in historical paintings may severely differ from those originally used or prepared by the painter, complicating the assessment of the painter's intentions. More than the presence of metal soaps, the key questions to be tackled should be about their origins and (re)mobilization.

Abstract: A general standardization method is described for the determination of oxygen in solid samples via the 16O(n,p)16N reaction. Two systems of flux monitoring are considered: the sample versus standard comparator method and BF3 monitoring. The average flux in sample and standard, fast neutron shielding, fast neutron scattering, absorption of fast neutrons, absorption of 16N γ-rays and counting efficiency of sample and standard are considered. The influence of the target diameter on the obtained correction factors has also been studied. Total achievable accuracy is believed to be about 1%.

Abstract: Effective CO2-storage in the shallow solid Earth mainly occurs by the formation of carbonates. Although the possibility of transport and storage of carbonates to great depth is demonstrated experimentally, ultra-deep mantle carbonates have not been found before. Applying several in situ analytical techniques on inclusions in diamonds from Juina (Brazil) originating from the lower part of the transition zone (> 580 km) or even the lower mantle (> 670 km), reveal the existence of deep Earth carbonates. These finding unquestionably show that at least locally carbonates exist within the deep Earth and may indicate that the Earth's global CO2-cycle has an ultra-deep extension.

Abstract: We report on a wearable fingertip sensor for on-the-spot identification of cocaine and its cutting agents in street samples. Traditionally, on-site screening is performed by means of colour tests which are difficult to interpret and lack selectivity. By presenting the distinct voltammetric response of cocaine, cutting agents, binary mixtures of cocaine and street samples in solution and powder street samples, we were able to elucidate the electrochemical fingerprint of all these compounds. The new electrochemical concept holds considerable promise as an on-site screening method.

Abstract: RATIONALE: Compound-specific stable isotope analyses of carbon require relatively large amounts of sample for reliable analyses. Commonly applied injections of 1 μL may thus be inefficient for samples with low concentrations of pollutants (e.g. air particulate matter) or when the amount of a sample is limited. METHODS: A Large-Volume Injection (LVI) method for carbon stable isotope ratio analysis of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) was optimized in this study. Gas chromatography/combustion/isotope ratio mass spectrometry (GCCIRMS) and ion trap mass spectrometry (ITMS) were used for the determination of stable carbon isotope ratios and quantification of compounds, respectively. RESULTS: The optimized method resulted in very good reproducibility, even for the most volatile PAH, naphthalene, when a small amount of higher boiling co-solvent was used. No significant fractionation of isotope ratios could be seen and the recoveries of analytes were similar to or better than that of a splitless cold injection. CONCLUSIONS: Injection of 100 μL, instead of the commonly used 1 μL, increases the detection limit for PAHs significantly and/or simplifies the sample preparation step. Using our optimized method, stable carbon isotope ratios can be reliably measured in samples with concentrations of PAHs down to 0.050.1 ng μL1.

Abstract: An aqueous sodium dodecanoate solution has been used for the formation of a protective coating for lead. Three deposition methods have been compared: immobilization using cyclic voltammetry, immersion and amperometry. Apart from this, we tested a reduction pretreatment of the lead surface (−1.5 V during 600 s) in order to obtain a more reproducible coating, resulting in a better corrosion protection behavior. The corrosion inhibition properties were examined using potentiodynamic polarization curves and electrochemical impedance measurements in a standard corrosive environment.

Abstract: This study focuses on the water-soluble ion concentrations in the washing solution of leaves of different roadside tree species at three sites in Iran to estimate the ionic composition of the dry deposition of ambient air particulates. All considered water-soluble ion concentrations were significantly higher next to the roads with high traffic density compared to the reference site with low traffic density. The PCA results showed that Ca2+, Mg2+, and originated mainly from traffic activities and geological sources, and Na+, Cl-, K+ and F- from sea salts. In addition to sea salt, K+ and F- were also originated from anthropogenic sources i.e. industrial activities, biomass burning and fluorite mining. Moreover, the concentration of the water-soluble ions depended on species and site. C. lawsoniana had significantly higher ion concentrations in its leaf washing solution compared to L. japonicum and P. brutia which indicates C. lawsoniana is the most suitable species for accumulating of atmospheric dry deposition. From our results, it can be concluded that sites with similar traffic density can have different particle loads and water-soluble ion species, and that concentrations in leaf-washing solutions depend on site conditions and species-specific leaf surface characteristics.

Abstract: Electrochemical sensing for the semi-quantitative detection of biomarkers, drugs, environmental contaminants, food additives, etc. shows promising results in point-of-care diagnostics and on-site monitoring. More specifically, electrochemical fingerprint (EF)-based sensing strategies are considered an inviting approach for the on-site detection of low molecular weight molecules. The fast growth of electrochemical sensors requires defining the concept of direct electrochemical fingerprinting in sensing. The EF can be defined as the unique electrochemical signal or pattern, mostly recorded by voltammetric techniques, specific for a certain molecule that can be used for its quantitative or semi-quantitative identification in a given analytical context with specified circumstances. The performance of EF-based sensors can be enhanced by considering multiple features of the signal (i.e., oxidation or reduction patterns), in combination with statistical data analysis or sample pretreatments or by including electrode surface modifiers to enrich the EF. In this manuscript, some examples of EF-based sensors, strategies to improve their performances, and open challenges are discussed to unlock the full power of electrochemical fingerprinting for on-site sensing applications.

Abstract: This paper presents the results of X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysis of bricks sampled from historical places in Pernambuco, a state in the northeastern region of Brazil. In this study, twenty bricks found in historical sites were analyzed. Two bricks made in the 17th century, presumably used as ballast in ships coming from Holland, five locally manufactured bricks: one from 18th century, three from 19th century, and one from 20th century, and thirteen bricks collected from a recent Archeological investigation of Alto da Se, in the town of Olinda. Qualitative determination of the chemical elements present in the samples was undertaken using a self-assembled portable XRF system based on a compact X-ray tube and a thermoelectrically cooled Si-PIN photodiode system, both commercially available. X-ray diffraction analysis was also carried out to assess the crystalline mineral phases present in the bricks. The results showed that quartz (SiO2) is the major mineral content in all bricks. Although less expressive in the XRD patterns, mineral phases of illite, kaolinite, anorthite, and rutile are also identified. The trace element distribution patterns of the bricks, determined by the XRF technique, is dominated by Fe and, in decreasing order, by K, Ti, Ca, Mn, Zr, Rb, Sr, Cr, and Y with slight differences among them. Analyses of the chemical compositional features of the bricks, evaluated by principal component analysis of the XRF datasets, allowed the samples to be grouped into five clusters with similar chemical composition. These cluster groups were able to identify both age and manufacturing sites. Dutch bricks prepared with different geological clays compositions were defined.

Abstract: Laser Microprobe Mass Analysis (LAMMA) was used in a preliminary study to characterize aerosol particles from a beach and inland sites and from a heavily industrialized area. As many as six types of both positive and negative mass spectra with different inorganic and organic signals could be distinguished in the different particle size ranges. Information about the elemental composition and the speciation of S and N was obtained. With increasing distance from sea, progressive uptake of nitrate in seasalt particles was found. Complex particles, containing soot and organic ammonium sulfate, were also detected.

Abstract: A flow injection hydride generation graphite furnace atomic absorption spectrometric (FI-HG-GFAAS) method was applied to the determination of Se in Se-doped and undoped cereals and bakery products. For the purpose of doping, the soils used for the cultivation of the cereals were dosed with Se- doped foliar fertilizers. The samples were dissolved in a mixture of HNO(3) and H(2)O(2) solutions using micro-waveassisted digestion. The decomposition of H(2)Se generated from the sample solutions and the trapping of elemental Se were performed at a temperature of 300 degrees C on an Ir-pretreated integrated graphite platform of a transversally heated graphite atomizer(THGA). For release of the trapped Se within a fairly short atomization time (5s), an atomization temperature of 2200 degrees C was observed to be optimal. The overall efficiency of hydride generation, transport and trapping was similar to 86%. The upper limit of the linear dynamic range of calibration was 10 mu gL(-1), which corresponds to 0.5 mu g g(-1) for solid samples. Recovery of the samples spiked with Se(VI) solutions was found to be 93 +/- 6% on average. The relative standard deviation of the determinations was less than 8%. The limit of detection was found to be 0.06 mu gL(-1), corresponding to 3 ng g(-1) for solid samples. The accuracy of the method was verified with the use of IAEA-155 ( whey powder) certified reference material. End-capped THGA tubes resulted in an extension of the linear calibration range compared to that of standard THGAs. The Se content in bakery products made of undoped cereals ranged from 7.7 to 68 ng g(-1) ( wet weight) in 18 samples, whereas the Se content of the corresponding cereals was found to be below 100 ng g(-1) ( wet weight). The Se level of cereals grown on soils treated with Se- doped fertilizers ranged from 128 to 1046 ng g(-1) ( wet weight), and it depended linearly on the Se concentration of the corresponding foliar fertilizer.

Abstract: Two groundwater-fed river systems (Nete and Demer, Belgium) carry red suspended material that settles on the river bed forming red sediments. The local aquifer that feeds these river systems is a glauconite-rich sand, which provides most of the dissolved Fe to the rivers. The solid component of these systems, i.e., the red suspended material and sediments, has a simple mineralogy (predominantly ferrihydrite), but shows a complex geochemistry pointing out the different processes contributing to the river chemistry: (1) the red sediments have higher transition metal (excluding Cu) and detrital element (e.g., Si, Al, K, Rb, etc.) concentrations than the red suspended matter because of their longer residence time in the river and higher contribution of the background (aquifer) component, respectively; (2) the red suspended material and sediments have inherited their rare earth element (REE) patterns from the aquifer; (3) the origin of Sr present in the red suspended matter and red sediments is predominantly marine (i.e., Quaternary calcareous rocks), but a small amount is geogenic (i.e., from detrital rocks); (4) Pb in both solids originates mostly from anthropogenic and geogenic sources; (5) all of the anthropogenic Pb in the red suspended material and sediments is hosted by the ferrihydrite; (6) Nd budget of the red riverine samples is controlled by the geogenic source and shows little anthropogenic component; (7) the significant Fe- and Zn-isotope fractionations are in line with the previous studies. Their fractionation patterns do not correlate, suggesting that the processes controlling the isotope geochemistry of Fe and Zn are different: oxidation/reduction most likely governs the Fe-isotope fractionation, whereas adsorption/desorption or admixing of anthropogenic sources controls the isotope fractionation of Zn.

Abstract: Nowadays the electronic structure calculations allow the study of complex systems determining the hyperfine parameters measured at a probe atom, including the presence of crystalline defects. The hyperfine electric parameters have been measured by Mossbauer spectroscopy in silicon materials implanted with Mn-57 ->,Fe-57 ions, observing four main contributions to the spectra. Nevertheless, some ambiguities still remain in the Fe-57 Mossbauer spectra interpretation in this case, regarding the damage configurations and its evolution with annealing. In the present work several implantation environments are evaluated and the Fe-57 hyperfine parameters are calculated. The observed correlation among the studied local environments and the experimental observations is presented, and a tentative microscopic description of the behavior and thermal evolution of the characteristic defects local environments of the probe atoms concerning the location of vacancies and interstitial Si in the neighborhood of Fe-57 ions in substitutional and interstitial sites is proposed. Abstract: Several authors had estimated the displacements per atom cross sections under different approximations and models, including most of the main gamma- and electron-material interaction processes. These previous works used numerical approximation formulas which are applicable for limited energy ranges. We proposed the Monte Carlo assisted Classical Method (MCCM), which relates the established theories about atom displacements to the electron and positron secondary fluence distributions calculated from the Monte Carlo simulation. In this study the MCCM procedure is adapted in order to estimate the displacements per atom cross sections for gamma and electron irradiation. The results obtained through this procedure are compared with previous theoretical calculations. An improvement in about 10-90% for the gamma irradiation induced dpa cross section is observed in our results on regard to the previous evaluations for the studied incident energies. On the other hand, the dpa cross section values produced by irradiation with electrons are improved by our calculations in about 5-50% when compared with the theoretical approximations. When thin samples are irradiated with electrons, more precise results are obtained through the MCCM (in about 20-70%) with respect to the previous studies. (C) 2014 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Abstract: One of the most striking but unexplained phenomena in the natural degradation of glass is the transformation of an almost colorless, transparent and homogeneous glass into a colored, opaque and heterogeneous degradation layer. In many cases, the degradation layer consists of numerous lamellae with a thickness between 0.1 and 10 pm. However, both internal structure and formation proess of laminated degradation layers remain unclear. In this paper, a model is proposed where we assume that transformed (degraded) glass consists of a random packing of nano-sized silica particles while the lamellae are the result of different packing densities. The model is able to connect the texture of numerous lamellae observed by several types of microscopic techniques with the structure at molecular level determined by means of chemical analysis. In addition, the model is able to explain numerous properties such as the parameters responsible for the contrast between lamellae. This contrast can be caused by differences in color, density, elemental composition, or surface roughness. (C) 2016 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
