Abstract: Nanomaterialen kunnen uiterst interessante eigenschappen vertonen voor een verscheidenheid aan veelbelovende toepassingen, gaande van zonnecrème tot batterijen voor elektrische auto’s. Een nanometer is een miljard keer kleiner dan een meter. Op deze schaal kunnen de materiaaleigenschappen volledig verschillen van bulkmaterialen op grotere schaal. Bovendien hangen de eigenschappen van nanomaterialen sterk af van hun exacte grootte en vorm. Kleine verschillen in de posities van de atomen, in de grootte-orde van een picometer (nog eens duizend maal kleiner dan een nanometer), kunnen de fysische eigenschappen al drastisch beïnvloeden. Daarom is een betrouwbare kwantificering van de atomaire structuur van kritisch belang om de evolutie naar materiaalontwerp mogelijk te maken en inzicht te verwerven in de relatie tussen de fysische eigenschappen en de structuur van nanomaterialen. Daarnaast kan de atomaire structuur van nanomaterialen ook veranderen in de loop van de tijd ten gevolge van verschillende fysische processen. Het onderzoek dat in deze thesis gepresenteerd wordt, maakt het mogelijk om de dynamische structuurveranderingen van nanomaterialen betrouwbaar te kwantificeren op atomaire schaal door gebruik te maken van raster transmissie elektronenmicroscopie (STEM). Ik heb dit gerealiseerd door methodes te ontwikkelen waarmee ik het aantal atomen “achter elkaar” kan tellen in elke atoomkolom van een nanomateriaal, en dit op basis van beelden opgenomen met een elektronenmicroscoop. Een belangrijk verschil met telmethodes voor de analyse van een enkel beeld is het schatten van de kans dat een atoomkolom atomen zal verliezen of bijkrijgen van het ene naar het andere beeld in de tijdreeks. Deze kwantitatieve methode kan het ontrafelen van de tijdsafhankelijke structuur-eigenschappen relatie van een nanomateriaal mogelijk maken, wat uiteindelijk kan leiden tot efficiënter design en productie van nanomaterialen voor innovatieve toepassingen.

Abstract: Using state-of-the-art simulation methods, we optimized the performance of nanoscale superconducting scanning probe tips for advanced spatial imaging of magnetic fields. The systematic studies of the tips’ static properties as a function of the tilted magnetic field, geometric parameters, and material parameters were carried out. The sensitivity of different superconducting quantum interference devices (SQUIDs) to the magnetic field emanating from the magnetic nanoparticle, where the location of a magnetic nanoparticle is considered below the primary loop's center, was examined as a function of the primary and secondary loop dimensions. The main objective of the research was to characterize and optimize the performance of a nano-sized SQUID-on-tip (SOT) device. Optimal SOT sensitivity was sought, for different loop sizes, arm linewidth, and lead dimensions. Moreover, we revealed that a constriction in the loop arms of the SOT can substantially improve the sensitivity of the device. Finally, the properties of the theta-SOT device were examined in the presence of in-plane and out-of-plane magnetic field components, enabling nanoscale imaging of 3D distributions of the magnetic field. Altogether, the obtained results deliver an engineering solution for the optimum performance of the SOT device in desired conditions.

Abstract: In this thesis we investigate the emergence of new phenomena in multigap superconductors and multicomponent Ginzburg-Landau theories in the presence of intraband and cross-band pairing. The first part contains a review of emergent phenomena in superconductors with only intraband pairing, in particular the mechanism behind gap resonances which are accompanied by Higgs and Leggett modes. Then we study the gap resonances induced by two-dimensional quantum confinement and describe its spatial profile using the Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations. In the second part we describe the conditions where the cross-band pair formation is feasible. Using the formalism of Green functions we obtain the equations governing the interplay between intraband and cross-band pairing. Also, we derived the Ginzburg-Landau equations considering both intraband and cross-band pairing. Finally, we describe the crossover between the intraband-dominated and crossband-dominated regimes. These two are delimited by a tendency towards a gapless state. When a magnetic field is applied close to the gapless state, we found new arrangements of vortices like square lattices, stripes, labyrinths or of vortex clusters. The experimental signatures and consequences of crosspairing are discussed for MgB2 and Ba0.6K0.4Fe2As2.

Abstract: Four x-ray techniques: computed radiography, emission radiography, energy-resolved radiography and imaging x-ray fluorescence were compared using four mock-up panel paintings. The paintings have different stratigraphy and pigments and are representative for different historical periods. One of the paintings has a hidden underlying painting. The type of pigments used mainly influences the information obtained by both the emission and absorption measurements; high-Z white pigment and high-Z color pigments giving the best contrast. Each of the techniques revealed interesting aspects of the paintings, but none of them could reveal the hidden painting to a satisfactory level. Due to the statistical quality of the spectral data, x-ray fluorescence gives elemental images with high contrast. The radiographic images are better to reveal the internal structure. Imaging x-ray fluorescence and energy-resolved radiography measurements can be done simultaneously, and the combination has the highest potential for the study of complex multilayer paintings. Abstract: A study of the suitability of the Tertian algorithm using new accurate binary influence coefficients and a comparison standard for x-ray fluorescence analysis of geological materials prepared as borax glass beads was performed. The algorithm was found to give satisfactory results for the analysis of four major components in geological materials. Even in the worst case, when there is a factor of 20 difference in the concentration in the specimen and a comparison standard, the algorithm gives results which differ from the true results by a factor of about 2. This makes the algorithm attractive as a diagnostic tool in analyses of unknown specimens and in the identification of appropriate standards. The binary coefficients are easily calculated so that the algorithm can be implemented on a minicomputer.

Abstract: ​In this thesis, microalga Dunaliella salina is highlighted as a novel source of protein to sustain the human needs. As demonstrated in this thesis, the biochemical composition of D. salina is not fixed, and can be substantially influenced by internal and external conditions. In order to comply with the human requirement of protein, various important factors affecting the protein quantity and quality of D. salina have been evaluated in this thesis for an optimized production strategy. All tested parameters, namely salinity, pH, light regimes (continuous light and light/dark cycle), light intensity, nutrient levels and growth phases can contribute to significant variations of protein content and essential amino acid (EAA) level in D. salina. Ultimately, D. salina is capable of producing high amount of superior quality protein, complying with the FAO reference for human consumption. Even better, such protein of superior quality can be accompanied by unique β-carotene accumulation in D. salina, a pigment with anti-oxidant pro-vitamin A effect. In the end, according to the techno-economic analysis (TEA), it is economically feasible to produce D. salina biomass for human nutrition.
