“Analysis of lateritic material from Cerro impacto by instrumental neutron activation employing a low-energy photon semiconductor and a high-energy Ge(Li) detector”. LaBrecque JJ, Beusen JM, Van Grieken RE, Applied spectroscopy 40, 140 (1986). http://doi.org/10.1366/0003702864509600
Abstract: Nineteen elements were determined in four different grain size fractions of a bulk geological material from Cerro Impacto for a study of the physical (mechanical) concentration process of different elements based upon the hardness of the different minerals. The analysis was performed by excitation of the sample with a high, slow neutron flux followed by gamma-ray spectroscopy with both a conventional Ge(Li) high-energy detector and a low-energy photon detector (LEPD). The accuracy of this method was studied with the use of two standard reference materials, SY-2 and SY-3, which are similar to the real samples. The values determined were also compared with a secondary target x-ray fluorescence method for all the elements that were suitable to both methods. Actually, the x-ray fluorescence method was found to be more complementary than competitive.

“Comparison of x-ray absorption and emission techniques for the investigation of paintings”. Cabal A, Schalm O, Eyskens P, Willems P, Harth A, van Espen P, X-ray spectrometry 44, 141 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1002/XRS.2591
Abstract: Four x-ray techniques: computed radiography, emission radiography, energy-resolved radiography and imaging x-ray fluorescence were compared using four mock-up panel paintings. The paintings have different stratigraphy and pigments and are representative for different historical periods. One of the paintings has a hidden underlying painting. The type of pigments used mainly influences the information obtained by both the emission and absorption measurements; high-Z white pigment and high-Z color pigments giving the best contrast. Each of the techniques revealed interesting aspects of the paintings, but none of them could reveal the hidden painting to a satisfactory level. Due to the statistical quality of the spectral data, x-ray fluorescence gives elemental images with high contrast. The radiographic images are better to reveal the internal structure. Imaging x-ray fluorescence and energy-resolved radiography measurements can be done simultaneously, and the combination has the highest potential for the study of complex multilayer paintings. “Use of theoretical accurate binary influence coefficients with Tertian's equation in X-ray fluorescence analysis of silicate rocks in borax glass beads”. Muia LM, Van Grieken R, X-ray spectrometry 19, 141 (1990). http://doi.org/10.1002/XRS.1300190311
Abstract: A study of the suitability of the Tertian algorithm using new accurate binary influence coefficients and a comparison standard for x-ray fluorescence analysis of geological materials prepared as borax glass beads was performed. The algorithm was found to give satisfactory results for the analysis of four major components in geological materials. Even in the worst case, when there is a factor of 20 difference in the concentration in the specimen and a comparison standard, the algorithm gives results which differ from the true results by a factor of about 2. This makes the algorithm attractive as a diagnostic tool in analyses of unknown specimens and in the identification of appropriate standards. The binary coefficients are easily calculated so that the algorithm can be implemented on a minicomputer.

“Composition of aerosols in the marine boundary layer over the seas of the western Russian Arctic”. Shevchenko VP, Lisitzin AP, Kuptzov VM, Van Malderen H, Martin JM, Van Grieken R, Huang WW, Omnia therapeutica. supplemento 39, 142 (1999)
Abstract: During the SPASIBA expedition (Scientific Program on Arctic and Siberian Aquatorium) on board RV “Yakov Smirnitzky” to the Laptev Sea 10 samples of aerosols in the marine boundary layer have been collected by nylon meshes in August-September 1991. The composition of the samples was studied by a combined approach of different analytical techniques (single-particle analysis, instrumental neutron activation analysis, and atomic absorption spectrometry). The mass concentration of coarse (>1 mu m) insoluble fraction of aerosols was from 0.08 to 0.46 mu g/m(3). In all samples remains of land vegetation were found as the main component. The organic carbon content of the aerosols ranged from 23 to 49%. The inorganic part of the samples is represented mainly by alumosilicates and quartz, In all samples anthropogenic fly ash particles were detected, Temporal variations of the element concentrations are caused by various air masses transported to the study area.

“Bio(inspired) strategies for the electro-sensing of β-lactam antibiotics”. Bottari F, Blust R, De Wael K, Current opinion in electrochemistry 10, 143 (2018). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.COELEC.2018.05.016
Abstract: The dire previsions of the WHO on the so-called “post-antibiotic era” and the continuous and global rise of anti-microbial resistance, spurs our research community to find better ways to fight these threats. In light of this severe threat to human health many attempts have been made to develop efficient methods to detect antibiotic residues in different streams. The use of electrochemistry seems an inviting approach for on-site and fast monitoring. In this critical review, recent developments in the field of (bio) electro-sensing of 19-lactam antibiotics will be presented, with a focus on aptamers and molecularly imprinted polymers, the two main promises of a new generation of biosensors, yet to be fulfilled.

Abstract: Carboxylic acids and sodium carboxylates are used to protect metals against aqueous and atmospheric corrosion. In this paper, we describe the application of a layer of copper carboxylate on the surface of a copper electrode by means of cyclic voltammetry technique and tests which measure the corresponding resistance to aqueous corrosion. Unlike the soaking process, which also forms a film on the surface, the use of cyclic voltammetry allows one to follow the deposition process of the copper carboxylates onto the electrode. The modified electrodes have been characterised with infrared spectroscopy. In addition, the corrosion resistance of the film has been investigated using polarisation resistance and Tafel plot measurements.

“Elemental constituents of atmospheric aerosols in Recife, North-East Brazil”. Van Grieken R, Van 't dack L, Costa Dantas C, Moura de Amorim W, Maenhaut W, Environmental pollution: series B : chemical and physical 4, 143 (1982). http://doi.org/10.1016/0143-148X(82)90025-8
Abstract: Few data are available on the inorganic atmospheric pollution in the rapidly expanding cities of South America, like Recife, on the Atlantic Coast of North-east Brazil. Therefore, the elemental composition of atmospheric aerosols was investigated for nine sites in the Recife conurbation and a fairly remote site in the area. Total aerosol samples were collected on cellulose filters for analysis by energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence and cascade impactors were used to collect the aerosols as a function of particle size for subsequent analysis by proton-induced X-ray emission. Local soil aliquots were also analysed. About eighteen elements were quantified in all cases. The average total atmospheric concentrations appeared to be well above natural levels but usually lower than, or comparable with, those of North American and European cities. Dispersal of sea spray and of local soil (often contaminated with, for example, Cu, Zn and Pb from industrial sources) contributes predominantly to the total atmospheric load in Recife. However, the particle size fraction results also indicated strong excesses in the small particle mode for S, K, V, Mn, Ni, Cu, Zn, Br and Pb, mainly in the downtown area. Again, the corresponding enrichment factors were only moderate in comparison with other published urban data.

“Natural and artificial radioactivity measurements in Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey”. Celik N, Čevik U, Celik A, Koz B, Journal of hazardous materials 162, 146 (2009). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.JHAZMAT.2008.05.017
Abstract: In the present work, naturally occurring radionuclides of (226)Ra, (232)Th and (40)K were measured in soil samples collected from the Eastern Black Sea region of Turkey. It was found that the activity concentrations ranged from 12 to 120 Bq kg(-1) for (226)Ra, from 13 to 121 Bq kg(-1) for (232)Th and from 204 to 1295 Bq kg(-1) for (40)K. Besides naturally occurring radionuclides, (137)Cs activity concentration was measured in soil, lichen and moss samples and it was found that (137)Cs activity concentration ranged from 27 to 775 Bq kg(-1) with for soil, from 29 to 879 Bq kg(-1) for lichen and from 67 to 1396 Bq kg(-1) for moss samples. Annual effective doses due to the naturally occurring radionuclides and (137)CS were estimated. Ecological half-lives of (137)CS in lichen and moss species were estimated. The decrease of the activity concentrations in the present measurements (2007) relative to those in 1993 indicated ecological half-lives between 1.36 and 2.96 years for lichen and between 1.35 and 2.85 years for moss species. Abstract: Sampling, storing, sample pretreatment, and experimental conditions for selenium (Se) determination in human serum, plasma, and whole blood by X-ray emission spectrometric (XRS) methods are described. Concentration levels in these biological fluids, found by this technique, are discussed and compared to values found by other techniques for the same healthy population group in the same area. XRS analysis of blood from patients with various pathological conditions is reviewed, with special attention to the relation of Se with the concentration level of other essential or nonessential trace elements.

Abstract: A fast (10 min) non-destructive determination of copper in. steel and cast iron by 14-MeV neutron activation analysis is described. The 0.511-MeV annihilation radiation of62Cu (T1/2=9.8 min), induced by the reaction63Cu(n,2n)62Cu, is counted by two opposing NaI(Tl) detectors operating in coincidence. An oxygen flux monitor is used to normalise the irradiations. For high phosphorus contents, two measurements are made and the 9-min activity contribution is calculated. As the iron content of the samples is known, the use of pure iron samples allows correction for53Fe activity from the reaction54Fe(n,2n)53Fe(T1/2= 8.9 min). When the phosphorus and silicon activities are low, the procedure of counting and computing can be greatly simplified. Nuclear interferences of most common alloying and impurity elements were investigated. The precision is 23% for steels containing above 1% Cu, andCa. 10% for 0.1%Cu.

“The SALUT project : study of advanced laser techniques for the uncovering of polychromed works of art”. van der Snickt G, de Boeck A, Keutgens K, Anthierens D, 116, 151 (2007)
Abstract: In order to find out whether the existing laser systems can be employed to remove superimposed layers of paint on secco wall paintings in a selective way, laser tests were carried out on three types of prepared samples simulating three stratigraphies that are frequently encountered in practice. OM, EPMA, colorimetry, mu Raman, and FT-IR were used to evaluate the results. It was found that Q-switched Nd:YAG lasers emitting at 1,064 nm could be employed to remove unwanted layers of oil paint and limewash, but the treatment of large areas requires implementation of a computer-controlled X-Y-Z station in order to control the parameters. However, the applicability of this technique will remain limited as ablation at the established optimum parameters implied a discoloration of the pigments cinnabar, yellow ochre, and burnt sienna. Moreover, it was observed that no ablation took place when the limewash thickness exceeds 25 mu m. Unwanted layers of acrylic could be removed in an efficient way with an excimer laser emitting at 193 nm.

“Improvement in the coating homogeneity in electrosynthesized Rh structured catalysts for the partial oxidation of methane”. Benito P, Monti M, de Nolf W, Nuyts G, Janssens K, et al, Catalysis today 246, 154 (2015). http://doi.org/10.1016/J.CATTOD.2014.10.003
Abstract: The precipitation of Rh/Mg/Al and Rh/Al hydroxides on the surface of FeCrAlloy foams by a base electrogeneration method was investigated to improve the properties of the deposited film (homogeneity and composition) and therefore the performances of the structured catalysts, obtained by calcination, in the Catalytic Partial Oxidation of CH4 to syngas. The work focussed on decreasing current gradients within open-cell foam cylinders by increasing the number of electrical contacts from 1 to 3 points to promote a more homogeneous precipitation of the hydroxides. Electrochemical and catalytic tests as well as SEM/EDS and mu-XRFIXRD analyses allowed to correlate the effect of the number of electrical contact points with materials properties. Lastly, syntheses were performed on Pt plates to study the effect of the electrical behaviour and shape of the support on the composition of the film. A more homogeneous coating of the foam surface was achieved by adopting a configuration with 3 contact points since the reduction of nitrates and water molecules that generates the basic media in the vicinity of the support was enhanced. Layer thicknesses up to 5-15 mu m were deposited; however, the sequential precipitation of a film with composition closer to the expected one and a layer enriched in Al and Rh (outer layer) was not avoided. The improvement in the coating gave rise to enhanced performances for a sample prepared at -1.1 V for 3000 s. Contrarily, the low adherence of the outer layer in a sample prepared at -1.2 V for 2000 s during both calcination and catalytic tests may be responsible of the unexpected decrease in catalytic performances. The same sequential precipitation was observed by performing the syntheses on Pt plates, showing that the electrical nature the support did not play a key role on this phenomenon.
