Abstract: Monolithic nickel/carbon (Ni/C) composites were prepared from coal tar pitch-impregnated compressed expanded graphite pre-decorated with NiO particles (EGNiO) by pyrolysis at 550 °C and subsequent steam activation at 800 °C. The microstructural arrangement of the Ni-comprising nanoparticles in the composites was investigated using transmission electron microscopy. The specific surface area and porosity of the composites were analyzed by nitrogen adsorption. The catalytic activity of the composites was compared with the material obtained by the conventional H2 treatment of EGNiO using hydrocracking of 2,2,3-trimethylpentane as a model reaction.

Abstract: The charge-coupled devices used in electron microscopy are coated with a scintillating crystal that gives rise to a severe modulation transfer function (MTF). Exact knowledge of the MTF is imperative for a good correspondence between image simulation and experiment. We present a practical method to measure the MTF above the Nyquist frequency from the beam blocker's shadow image. The image processing has been fully automated and the program is made public. The method is successfully tested on three cameras with various beam blocker shapes.

Abstract: The main barrier in the commercialization of phytoextraction as a sustainable alternative for remediating metal contaminated soils is its long time period, which can be countered by biomass valorization. From an environmental point of view, fast pyrolysis of the biomass is promising because its lower process temperature prevents metal volatilization. The remaining question is whether fast pyrolysis is also preferred from an economic point of view. Therefore, a techno-economic assessment of fast pyrolysis has been performed for a case study in the Campine region in Belgium. For this region, willow trees cultivated in short rotation have the right characteristics to serve as a phytoextracting crop. A techno-economic assessment requires by definition a multidisciplinary approach. The problem statement urges for a focus on the economic profitability from the viewpoint of an investor, including economic risk analysis. Fast pyrolysis seems more profitable than gasification. The profit is dependent on the scale of operation, the policy support (subsidies) and the oil yield. The economic risk can be reduced by increasing the scale of operation by means of complementing feedstocks, and by valorization of the char byproduct by subsequent processing to activated carbon. Abstract: Strain can strongly impact the performance of III-V tunnel field-effect transistors (TFETs). However, previous studies on homostructure TFETs have found an increase in ON-current to be accompanied with a degradation of subthreshold swing. We perform 30-band quantum mechanical simulations of staggered heterostructure p-n-i-n TFETs submitted to uniaxial and biaxial uniform stress and find the origin of the subthreshold degradation to be a reduction of the density of states in the strained case. We apply an alternative configuration including a lowly doped pocket in the source, which allows to take full benefit of the strain-induced increase in ON-current.

Abstract: The problem of the epitaxial growth of the high temperature superconducting R1+xBa2xCu3O7δ (R = Y or rare earth except Ce and Tb) films has been addressed. Using in situ ultra high vacuum Scanning Tunneling Microscopy (UHV-STM) we have studied the role of cationic substitution and substrate mismatch on the growth mode of stoichiometric and Nd-rich Nd1+xBa2xCu3O7δ thin films. The results are compared to the growth of Y1Ba2Cu3O7δ, Dy1Ba2Cu3O7δ and Gd1Ba2Cu3O7δ epitaxial films. Two main phenomena are investigated: a) the first stage of the direct nucleation on the substrate and b) the crossover between 2D and 3D growth upon increasing the film thickness. At the first stage of the growth, pseudo-cubic perovskite (Re,Ba)CuO3 nuclei are formed. While they disappear after the growth of a few nm in stoichiometric films, they persist on the surface of Nd-rich films of up to 110 nm thickness. Stoichiometric R1+xBa2xCu3O7δ films exhibit a rough morphology with increasing thickness due to island growth mode, whereas Nd-rich films remain smooth and continue to grow layer by layer. It is proposed that linear defects (like anti-phase boundaries), which are formed due to the misalignment of growth fronts, are the source of screw dislocations in stoichiometric films. In Nd-rich films, linear defects are eliminated through the insertion of (Nd,Ba)CuO3 extra layers without introduction of any screw dislocations.

Abstract: Polymerized KC60 undergoes a structural phase transition accompanied by a metal-insulator transition around 50 K. To explain the structural aspect, a mechanism involving small orientational deviations of the valence electron density on every C-60 monomer orientational charge density waves (OCDWs) – has already been proposed earlier. In the present work, we address the metal-insulator transition using the OCDW concept. We are inspired by the analogy between a polymer chain exhibiting an OCDW and a linear atomic chain undergoing a static lattice deformation doubling the unit cell: such a deformation implies a band gap at the zone boundary, yielding an insulating state (Peierls instability). Within our view, a similar mechanism occurs in polymerized KC60; the OCDW plays the role of the lattice deformation. We present tight-binding band structure calculations and conclude that the metal-insulator transition can indeed be explained using OCDWs, but that the threedimensionality of the crystal plays an unexpected key role.

Abstract: This paper presents the computational study of the metal-organic (MO) CVD of titanium dioxide (TiO2) films grown using titanium tetraisopropoxide (TTIP) as a precursor and nitrogen as a carrier gas. The TiO2 films are deposited under atmospheric pressure. The effects of the precursor concentration, the substrate temperature, and the hydrolysis reaction on the deposition process are investigated. It is found that hydrolysis of the TTIP decreases the onset temperature of the gas-phase thermal decomposition, and that the deposition rate increases with the precursor concentration and with the decrease of substrate temperature. Concerning the mechanism responsible for the film growth, the model shows that at the lowest precursor concentration, the direct adsorption of the precursor is dominant, while at higher precursor concentrations, the monomer deposition becomes more important.

Abstract: MXenes, a new family of functional two-dimensional (2D) materials, have shown great potential for an extensive variety of applications within the last decade. Atomic defects and functional groups in MXenes are known to have a tremendous influence on the functional properties. In this review, we focus on recent progress in the characterization of atomic defects and functional group chemistry in MXenes, and how to control them to directly influence various properties (e.g., electron transport, Li' adsorption, hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) activity, and magnetism) of 2D MXenes materials. Dynamic structural transformations such as oxidation and growth induced by atomic defects in MXenes are also discussed. The review thus provides perspectives on property optimization through atomic defect engineering, and bottom-up synthesis methods based on defect-assisted homoepitaxial growth of MXenes. Abstract: The time dependence of the resistance RAC of a La0.8Sr0.2MnO3 single crystal has been investigated in the vicinity of the metal-to-insulator transition temperature. We used local probe microscopy to show the existence, at room temperature, of coexisting clusters of micrometer size. Our analysis shows that relaxation effects can be described with a simple exponential contribution using a random resistor-network, based on phase separation between insulating and metallic domains. Our results clearly prove the existence of a percolation threshold over which no percolation path exists. Moreover, these results highlight the significant role of the remanent magnetization.

Abstract: High-rate activated sludge (HRAS) is an essential cornerstone of the pursuit towards energy positive sewage treatment through maximizing capture of organics. The capture efficiency heavily relies on the degree of solid separation achieved in the clarifiers. Limitations in the floc formation process commonly emerge in HRAS systems, with detrimental consequences for the capture of organics. This study pinpointed and overcame floc formation limitations present in full-scale HRAS reactors. Orthokinetic flocculation tests were performed with varying shear, sludge concentration, and coagulant or flocculant addition. These were analyzed with traditional and novel settling parameters and extracellular polymeric substances (EPS) measurements. HRAS was limited by insufficient collision efficiency and occurred because the solids retention time (SRT) was short and colloid loading was high. The limitation was predominantly caused by impaired flocculation rather than coagulation. In addition, the collision efficiency limitation was driven by EPS composition (low protein over polysaccharide ratio) instead of total EPS amount. Collision efficiency limitation was successfully overcome by bio-augmenting sludge from a biological nutrient removal reactor operating at long SRT which did not show any floc formation limitations. However, this action brought up a floc strength limitation. The latter was not correlated with EPS composition, but rather EPS amount and hindered settling parameters, which determined floc morphology. With this, an analysis toolkit was proposed that will enable design engineers and operators to tackle activated solid separation challenges found in HRAS systems and maximize the recovery potential of the process. Abstract: Titanium dioxide (TiO2) is a popular material as host matrix for enzymes. We now evidence that TiO2 can accumulate and retain reactive oxygen species after treatment by hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) and support redox cycling of a phenolic analyte between horseradish peroxidase (HRP) and an electrode. The proposed detection scheme is identical to that of second generation biosensors, but the measuring solution requires no dissolved H2O2. This significantly simplifies the analysis and overcomes issues related to H2O2 being present (or generated) in the solution. The modified electrodes showed rapid stabilization of the baseline, a low noise level, fast realization of a steady-state current response, and, in addition, improved sensitivity and limit of detection compared to the conventional approach, i.e. in the presence of H2O2 in the measuring solution. Hydroquinone, 4-aminophenol, and other phenolic compounds were successfully detected at sub-μM concentrations. Particularly, a linear response in the concentration range between 0.025 and 2 μM and LOD of 24 nM was demonstrated for 4-aminophenol. The proposed sensor design goes beyond the traditional concept with three sensors generations offering a new possibility for the development of enzymatic sensors based on peroxidases and the formation of ROS on titania after treatment with H2O2.
