Abstract: The energy distributions of ions produced in a spark source mass spectrometer were recorded for different trace element ions and for the total ion current. Both electrodes of pure doped graphite, and with 10% potassium salts added, were examined. The results show that the measured energy of an ion is mainly determined by the m/z ratio and that the energy of the total ion current depends on the sample composition. It was also clear that if the accelerating voltage is set to obtain maximum transmission of the total ion current, the fraction of the heavy elements that is discriminated at the β-slit depends on the matrix composition if the pass band of the instrument is narrow. These effects influence considerably the accuracy in the analysis of variable samples.

Abstract: Strained SiGe heterostructure-on-insulator (0 0 1) and (1 1 0) PMOSFETs are investigated including important aspects like CV characteristics, mobility, and ON current. The simulations are based on the self-consistent solution of 6 × 6 k · p Schrödinger Equation, multi subband Boltzmann Transport Equation and Poisson Equation, and capture size quantization, strain, crystallographic orientation, and SiGe alloy effects on a solid physical basis. The simulation results are validated by comparison with different experimental data sources. The simulation results show that the strained SiGe HOI PMOSFET with (1 1 0) surface orientation has a higher gate capacitance and a much higher mobility and ON current compared to a similar device with the traditional (0 0 1) surface orientation.

Abstract: Thin superconducting films can exhibit negative magnetoresistance when an in-plane external magnetic field is aligned parallel with the transport current. We explain this effect as due to appearance of parallel vortices in the plain of the film at the first critical magnetic field H-c1 which leads to an enhancement of the superconducting properties and impedes the motion of the current induced perpendicular vortices. Our theoretical results are based on a numerical solution of the time-dependent and stationary 3D Ginzburg-Landau equations.

Abstract: Methods used to strengthen metals generally also cause a pronounced decrease in ductility and electrical conductivity. In this work a bioinspired strategy is applied to surmount the dilemma. By assembling copper submicron flakes cladded with in-situ grown graphene, graphene/copper matrix composites with a nanolaminated architecture inspired by a natural nacre have been prepared. Owing to a combined effect-from the bioinspired nanolaminated architecture and improved interfacial bonding, a synergy has been achieved between mechanical strength and ductility as well as electrical conductivity in the graphene/copper matrix composites. With a low volume fraction of only 2.5% of graphene, the composite shows a yield strength and elastic modulus similar to 177% and similar to 25% higher than that of unreinforced copper matrix, respectively, while retains ductility and electrical conductivity comparable to that of pure copper. The bioinspired nanolaminated architecture enhances the efficiencies of two-dimensional (2D) graphene in mechanical strengthening and electrical conducting by aligning graphene to maximize performance for required loading and carrier transporting conditions, and toughens the composites by crack deflection. Meanwhile, in-situ growth of graphene is beneficial for improving interfacial bonding and structural quality of graphene. Abstract: In the present paper, the theory of the large bipolaron is reviewed and the possibility of bipolaron formation in the high-T(c) superconductors is indicated. Operator and path-integral formulations of the large bipolaron problem are compared. In the strong-coupling limit, the effect of non-optimal upper-bounds to the single-polaron groundstate energy is emphasized. The fact that the interaction with multiple phonon branches enhances the electron-phonon interaction and might result in a larger stability region for bipolaron formation is indicated. Experimental values for the static and high-frequency dielectric constants are used to discuss the relevance of bipolaron formation as a pair-forming mechanism in the high-T(c) superconductors.

Abstract: Epitaxially grown ultra-thin Si layers are often used to passivate Ge surfaces in the high-k gate module of (strained) Ge FinFET and Gate All Around devices. We use Si4H10 as Si precursor as it enables epitaxial Si growth at temperatures down to 330 degrees. C-V characteristics of blanket capacitors made on Ge virtual substrates point to the presence of an optimal Si thickness. In case of compressively strained Ge fin structures, the Si growth results in non-uniform and high strain levels in the strained Ge fin. These strain levels have been calculated for different shapes of the Ge fin and in function of the grown Si thickness. The high strain is the driving force for potential (unwanted) Ge surface reflow during Si deposition. The Ge surface reflow is strongly affected by the strength of the H-passivation during Si-capping and can be avoided by carefully selected process conditions. (C) The Author(s) 2018. Abstract: The cytoglobins of the Antarctic fish Chaenocephalus aceratus and Dissostichus mawsoni have many features in common with human cytoglobin. These cytoglobins are heme proteins in which the ferric and ferrous forms have a characteristic hexacoordination of the heme iron, i.e. axial ligation of two endogenous histidine residues, as confirmed by electron paramagnetic resonance, resonance Raman and optical absorption spectroscopy. The combined spectroscopic analysis revealed only small variations in the heme-pocket structure, in line with the small variations observed for the redox potential. Nevertheless, some striking differences were also discovered. Resonance Raman spectroscopy showed that the stabilization of an exogenous heme ligand, such as CO, occurs differently in human cytoglobin in comparison with Antarctic fish cytoglobins. Furthermore, while it has been extensively reported that human cytoglobin is essentially monomeric and can form an intramolecular disulfide bridge that can influence the ligand binding kinetics, 3D modeling of the Antarctic fish cytoglobins indicates that the cysteine residues are too far apart to form such an intramolecular bridge. Moreover, gel filtration and mass spectrometry reveal the occurrence of non-covalent multimers (up to pentamers) in the Antarctic fish cytoglobins that are formed at low concentrations. Stabilization of these oligomers by disulfide-bridge formation is possible, but not essential. If intermolecular disulfide bridges are formed, they influence the heme-pocket structure, as is shown by EPR measurements.

Abstract: The basics of the interpretation of high resolution images showing detail of the order of 0.1 nm are shortly explained here. The use of a field emission source, a CCD camera and an adapted reconstruction method for restoring the projected crystal potential (focus variation method) allows a quantitative interpretation of HREM images. Examples of partially disordered alloys and carbonate ordering in high Tc superconductors are presented.

Abstract: The use of non-invasive macroscopic imaging techniques is becoming more prevalent in the field of cultural heritage, especially to avoid invasive procedures that damage valuable artworks. For this purpose, an X-ray powder diffraction scanner (MA-XRPD) capable of visualising crystalline compounds in a highly specific manner was recently developed. Many inorganic pigments present in paintings fall into this category of materials. In this study, the 17th century oil painting Girl with a Pearl Earring (c. 1665) by Johannes Vermeer was analysed with a combination of transmission and reflection mode MA-XRPD. By employing this scanner in reflection mode, the relative sensitivity for compounds that are present at the paint surface could be increased, establishing it as a highly relevant technique for investigating the degradation processes that are ongoing at paint surfaces. Many of the original pigments employed by Vermeer could be identified, along with four secondary alteration products: gypsum (CaSO4 center dot 2H(2)O), anglesite (PbSO4), palmierite (K2Pb(SO4)(2)) and weddellite (CaC2O4 center dot 2H(2)O). The formation of gypsum was linked to the presence of chalk in the upper glaze layer while the formation of palmierite and weddellite is driven by the presence of lake pigments (and their substrates). In this manner, MA-XRPD can also be used to pinpoint locations relevant for sampling and synchrotron mu-XRPD analysis, which provides information on the microscopic make-up of the paint. A paint cross-section taken from an area rich in palmierite was analysed with synchrotron mu-XRPD, which confirmed the presence of this secondary compound at the interface of the upper paint layer with the ground layer as well as the presence of anglesite in the ground layer. The capacity of MA-XRPD to identify and chart secondary alteration products in a non-invasive manner has only very recently been demonstrated and makes it a highly relevant technique for the assessment of the chemical condition of works of art.

Abstract: Open waste dumps in Sri Lanka generate adverse environmental and socio-economic impacts due to inadequate maintenance. In this study, a concept of 'open waste dump mining' is suggested in order to minimise the environmental and socio-economic impacts, together with resource recovery. A model based on life cycle assessment and life cycle costing has been used to assess the environmental and economic feasibility of the suggested open waste dump mining concept. Two scenarios have been defined for a hypothetical case, dependent on the destination of the refuse derived fuel fraction. Scenario 1 comprises direct selling of refuse derived fuel as an alternative fuel to replace coal usage in the cement industry, while Scenario 2 consists of thermal treatment of refuse derived fuel with the objective of producing electricity. The study shows that both scenarios are beneficial from an environmental point of view, but not from an economic view point. However, economic profits can be obtained by adjusting waste transport distances and the price of electricity. The environmental analysis further reveals that the higher global warming potential of open waste dumps can be eliminated to a large extent by applying suggested mining and waste valorisation scenarios.
